    EDIT: The animator has now been released:
    ruclips.net/video/5aHhmRiVpZI/видео.html
    There's a lot of comments about this, so I'll pin it here:
    *Yes, I'm planning to put this Animator on the Asset Store (for free).*
    Just need a little more time.
    NOTE: I've picked this video's title as a joke. My ego is way too small for me to unironically state that I've changed an entire industry with something so insignificant. Usually, I'm an extraordinarily humble and handsome individual.

      The animator would actually be a great addition to the asset store. A lot of pixel art based games could probably use it. It's one of those things that fixes something that game developers often notice but nobody went through the effort to fix it. Awesome!

      Oh we notice. Us players might not outright praise you but trust me, when others don't follow suit, we rage in our silent corners. Plus while some of us aren't aware of it subconsciously when we see other games don't do it, it looks off and sometimes attrocious for some reason. @@MidnightSt Animancer was the most valueable asset I've ever bought. I highly recommend it, it was written to fix everything that's wrong with the default unity animator (mecanim) and it does it's job really well. Of course it's a tool and you have to learn how things are namend and how you setup things correctly such as events and clipTransitions - but once you figure this out, everything is possible and it works so damn well.

    • @supercyclone8342
      @supercyclone8342 Год назад +2

      Yeah, I think every developer using key frame animation needs to be told to ditch the default animator. I haven't taken the plunge into making/downloading a custom animator, but I did follow and expand upon the Lost Relic Games animator "fix" tutorial and that pretty much saved my metroidvania! (I have coded a simple animator for game engine test project, but it's not good enough to replace Unity's animator)
      My custom animator script still needs the unity animator's Play method to actually play the animation, but it avoids Unity's clunky graph and is fairly dynamic.

    This looks fantastic, but I really think you should reconsider having jumping in your game. It's just such a fundamental movement option that it's very likely to feel claustrophobic in a sense, or in some way uncomfortable if it isn't there.
    What you could do to achieve this, since you mentioned you ran out of buttons is either:
    A) Move Distort Gravity to "F", jump on Spacebar.
    B) Make the action contextual, such as if you are grounded you jump and if you are in the air you distort gravity. Keep both on Space bar.
    C) "W" could be jump when grounded.
    You have a very great attention to detail, and frankly this gravity distortion feature is very beautiful in its simplicity. The art you've made, particularly for your character is amazing as well. I think it's really clever how you picked one leg to be like a robotic spring-leg, making the whole animation read really well from afar.
    Keep at it, man!

    Trust me... I notice the care.
    And I love you for it, you mad lad, you.
    The Animation controller is probably the number 1 feature that got me like "yo, why am I using Unity again to make a 2D game?"
    Which exactly why I'm stuck getting slopes to work in the much different Game maker Studio 2, since it's community is more dead than the prince of persia franchise and Overwatch combined.
    Woo... Odd reference aside. I dunno what to do here.
    Every tutorial I could find would stop exactly at the heart of the problem that really keeps me from moving on, already setting me back weeks in dev time of what was supposed to be a half year project at max.
    And I can't just cut slopes (ceiling slopes to be exact) out of the game since I really prefer the aesthetics and it's integral for the player and enemies to interact with the ceiling in my game as well...
    Maybe I'm a lost cause and should just stick to making the artwork for other peoples games...

      @@aarthificial Oh no worries. I am still contemplating about moving back to Unity after seeing how elegantly you solved one of my core problems.
      Besides that, it seems like the community for the engine (Game Maker S 2) is absolutely dead.
      Almost all videos are from 3 years ago, outdated and where probably badly executed, even at their respective time.
      With nobody (and I mean, absolutely nobody, I tried everywhere.) to ask such simple things (as basic slope movement), it seems like I'm on my own in the wilderness with a wet match and a dull survival blade.
      I have a little bit of experience with scriptable objects in Unity.
      I would *love* to know a basic structure of how you integrated this. It seems like the objects themselves are not too difficult to set up, once I get to know how they are treated in code.

    I just watched all of your devlogs and I'm absolutely fascinated with the game!
    In episode 11 you demonstrated the tutorial and I get that it's all still in an early stage but I want to make a suggestion.
    I heard that in filmmaking "it's always better to show than to tell" and I think the same is true for games. Letting the player learn the controls for themselves through level design could be much more satisfying. I'd love to hear your opinion on this!

    • @aarthificial
      @aarthificial  3 года назад +1

      Thanks!
      Totally agree with the "show not tell".
      The design of this tutorial was actually inspired by the first mario level (I know, oldest example in the book).
      There's a pit that you can't cross. Everything around is grey except for the anchor which really stands out. It should naturally make you wanna hover your mouse over it. When you do so, the anchor's marker changes to indicate that it is, in fact, interactive. Next logical step would be to click on it which chages the marker furthermore. But this is when things get difficult. I don't really know how to persuade the player to also press space. None of my friends could figure this out on their own, that's why I decided to go with the architect.
      The idea is that he should serve as more of a tip when you're stuck, rather than an obligatory tutorial. Perhaps I should change the prompt from "talk to" to "ask for help" to better convey that this interaction is optional.
      This is however the only place where I "play it safe". There are three additional tutorial levels, each of them shows the player how they can utilize AST-1 in different ways. And it's done purely by showing. The architect is there only to provide some story/lore.
      But as you said, it's still an early stage and I believe that reiteration is crucial in game design so stuff will probably change a lot.
      I can't wait to realease the demo and see what people think about this. Maybe the whole control scheme is just unintuitive? Who knows.
      Thanks again!

    The algorithm strikes again, but it's actually good content!! I just watched all the playlist untill I got here again, I'm going to continue to watch the devlog, but I just wanted to say how much I like the art style of the game and the videos in general it's all great!
    At last I would like to throw an idea for the ability to jump if in the future you change idea on adding it, since the space bar is already used to change the gravity my idea would be to be able to jump only if detached by anchors, so that both jumping and messing with gravity would use the space bar.
    I'm gonna apologize in advance for any mistake, English is not my first language and keep up the good work!

    Just finished binging your videos. Really great quality work it's fantastic.
    I can see good potential for speed running with these game mechanics and I'm really excited to follow your project's progress.
    I'm really interested to know what's your background in programming and how did you learn what you know about gamedev.

    • @aarthificial
      @aarthificial  3 года назад

      Thank you so much!
      My background in programming is all over the place, but it's roughly something like this:
      20XX - The Games Factory 2
      2013 - Autodesk Maya (MEL)
      2014 - Unity (C#)
      2015 - Unreal (C++)
      2016 - Android (Java)
      2017 - Angular (JavaScript)
      2018 - React (TypeScript)
      For the past two years, I've been lucky enough to work as a junior programmer with some really experienced developers. They have taught me almost everything I know about proper programming (There's still a lot of things that I need to learn, though).
      When it comes to "how did I learn game dev," this is an answer that I gave on Reddit some time ago:
      "This is probably the least satisfying answer ever, but I have no idea. Most of the things I know come from youtube. But not from a specific channel or anything. There are many people out there who show their creative process and give out many useful tips and tricks. I love to watch them, try to replicate what they are doing, and experiment with stuff that I have learned to create something new."
      I hope it's a satisfying answer. I usually don't think too much about how I got where I am, so it's difficult for me to talk about this.

    • @bilel114
      @bilel114 3 года назад +1

      @@aarthificial I completely get that, I might be going through the same process.

    That animator component script look amazing. I wouldn't have appreciated that a while ago but after learning about procedural animation I think that stuff really has an impact. The left vs right leg is so nice for convincing non twitch movement.

    I love that attention to detail where the inside/outside leg is represented between states. I'm guessing you have a left facing and right facing frame and then horizontally flip it depending on which leg is on the outside.

    • @aarthificial
      @aarthificial  3 года назад +1

      Thank you!
      You're close but the main character is missing her right leg meaning that I can't really flip these sprites (cuz then her left leg would be missing)
      I just made four idle animations

    • @oblivion_2852
      @oblivion_2852 3 года назад +1

      @@aarthificial I'm not sure if you understood what I meant so I drew an explaination imgur.com/a/MSyn32N
      Just wanted to propose a way to halve your sprite work. This way you only need a view of each side (left stride/idle, right stride/idle)

    • @aarthificial
      @aarthificial  3 года назад +1

      @@oblivion_2852 Thank you again for taking your time!
      I do understand what you're suggesting. What I mean is that it only works for symmetric characters. Notice how in your example, red leg is on the left side of the character but after the flip it ends up on the right side.
      If you were to put something in their right hand, after the flip they would hold it in their left.
      That's because after flipping the sprite you end up with its mirrored version.
      It's a really small detail tho

    I can answer that question: these small details are super satisfactory for the developer to achieve and gives us a reason to procrastinate.
    "Oh, that thing in the background that took me a month to create, yeah, that's only in the game for 2 minutes..."
