If you’ve gotten past your Dio phobia you should think of doing the Last In Line. Easily Dio’s best and my favorite from him! - or/and Heaven and Hell. Does that count as Dio?
My all time Dio solo song is "Don't Talk To Strangers" I performed several of Dio's songs including his Rainbow work throughout my career and Don't Talk To Strangers and Gates of Babylon were the two of all, which always got a huge response, everybody always loved those two songs particularly. I never heard of any other band doing those songs live, so a lot of Dio/Rainbow fans followed us around and they just went retarded when we performed those two in particular. We also got great responses from Heaven & Hell, Nob Rules and Neon Knights. Those were my absolute favorite songs to perform, even though they could be vocal chord killers! Any lead vox here - Here's a tip that worked great for me - I always had a glass of warm, almost hot, water and another glass of ice water at the side of the stage. I drank the cold, then right away drank the warm water and my theory to start trying that was looking at vocal chords as a type of muscle, and muscles can be strengthened through workouts. So the cold water would tighten the chords, then the shock of warm/hot water immediately following the cold loosened the chords and relaxed them. It always worked for me, especially after doing several performances over a short period of time, which singing those kind of rigorous songs can be very hard on vocal chords. Of course proper breathing techniques is essential, if you don't know how to breath properly, just imagine your stomach is a tube of toothpaste - take in a good breath of air and as you're singing, start rolling up the tube from your stomach up and through the top of your head. Never sing with your throat, power comes from your belly, with a controlled flow being squeezed upward. One of my best friends was our guitar player and he was Japanese. His father was a doctor in Japan, and he suggested sea weed to strengthen vocal chords, and so I started buying fresh sea weed and making soup from it, or tea. Ya, it's not the best tasting tea I've ever had but it made a noticeable difference, as did green tea with honey and ginseng. The other thing I highly recommend is pure, natural honey, that stuff is an absolute magical substance! Not only for vocal chord health, but it strengthens your immune system so I haven't had any flue or cold for over thirty plus years not once! If I drank any alcohol either before or during a performance my throat would get dry and start to hurt. I always brought Chloraceptic throat spray which you can buy at any drug store. That stuff numbs your throat and stop the pain instantly. You have to be cautious when you use that because if you're not careful you might tend to push your vocals too hard, where you can damage yourself because you can't feel your vocal chords from the numbing effect of the spray and so if you have to use it, do so sparingly and be aware about pushing too hard. If you can only do one of the above, I would take the hot/cold water above the rest on the night of a performance. For preventative and throat health I would go with the green tea/ginseng/honey over the seaweed or honey. Now get out there and belt out some Gates of Babylon ROCK MONSTERS!! WOOOO! Jack Von Bronzesnake ~'()'~ Canada
Bronzesnake Whoa what an awesome post! I love all those songs dearly. Never heard Gates of Babylon tho. I’m excited to hear it! Thanks for such an informative reply!!
I agree. But you should check out Craig Goldy's playing on the Dream Evil album released in 1987. Still some killer riffs and songs if you care to investigate.
I met Vivian Campbell when I was 14 back in the 1980's, he used to stay at his fathers holiday home in Donegal Ireland. Me and a couple of guys skipped school to see him......brings back great memories!!!!
This is one of the songs I have been wanting to learn for so long. Vivian is just a beast on this Dio tune, and it really helps me and many get past this time of quarantine! Cheers man!
Thank You Carl, as ALWAYS You are AWESOME. To the Asshole’s who put a thumbs down; sell your guitar, go read a book, preferably one with pictures so you can understand it and leave learning the guitar/songs to those that really want to.
Carl thank you so much for helping myself and many other to keep pushing through guitar, you are one of the pioneers of RUclips lessons, thank you so much for all your hard work! You’re a true kick ass dude!! Much love from Wales UK
Carl, you are incredible. Of all the lessons I've found on RUclips, yours are always the best. I've been watching your stuff for years, and it's helped me monumentally.
For me it's the drumming. Modern metal drumming is just over the top. Too much showing off. The detuned guitars too. Everything has to be extreme or it's not "heavy".
I feel like they almost all sound too similar to each other and the songs are almost predictable. Not as unique as the old bands. Don't get me wrong they're very talented still.
That one, 'Rock You Like a Hurricane" ( Mathias Jabbs), ""Bark at the Moon" (Jake E Lee) " Hall of the Mountain King" ( Cris Oliva), "Big Trouble" ( Steve Vai), Mr. Scary ( George Lynch), and " Power Slave" ( Dave Murray and Adrian Smith) are in my opinion some of the best solos of that 80's Hard Rock/Metal-Era.
I'm glad you said that with the fills. Sure, playing covers is fun. But with fills and solos, you have a chance of putting your touch on songs. Too.many times people want to play exact, never becoming their own player. I wouldn't even worry hitting note for note on the solos. Just key parts. Make them your own. Grow as a player
Hey Carl I'm 16 and really enjoy your videos. I love playing guitar and love 80s hair metal. I have a few requests for you while in these harsh times: Another Rainy Night by Queensryche, House of Broken Love by Great White, and why not a little White Lion. Thank you and keep up the great work.
If you do another DIO solo album track, please consider the title track to the last in line album! Such a great song and such a great solo! Thanks for this lesson Carl.
thx carl, your the best teacher on youtube. guitar is more inportant to learn instead of the crap they teach at school. just wondering if you could do last in line
Dude absolutely nailing it with these song choices lately making my quarantine actually bearable. You should also teach “you really got me” or “Atomic punk” by Van Halen. But thanks for the lessons keep it up
Thanks man my dad has been requesting me learn this song for about a month an three just hasn’t been and good videos on the Van Halen version. But thanks for listening and keep up the good work
Love the videos man, I prefer tabs at this point but there's one song in particular that I've been wanting to learn for monts but I can't find any tabs or videos anywhere. Could you please do a video of "Heaven's hung in black" by W.A.S.P.!
Can you please do a tutorial on Killer Clowns - The Dickies? It's a theme I would love to learn. Your videos mean a lot towards my growth in guitar too!
Great job, Carl!!! Fun song! You must a get little bored though with these metal songs, , aside from the lead and the shredding, the fills, etc... , it’s very easy stuff .. FUN though

Hell yeah. The *real* Dio era. Vivian was a beast.
@Rebel Coolidge all hail the Viv Campbell era of Dio!! So good!!
I agree. But you should check out Craig Goldy's playing on the Dream Evil album released in 1987. Still some killer riffs and songs if you care to investigate.
Ronnie absolutely hated Vivian
@@dylanshepherd7111 lmao he’s w great guitarist though. It’s crazy he played on this album when he was 20 years old.
@@rigbone0260 he definitely was
Carl’s memory is INSANE... All these songs, the solos, fills... INCREDIBLE
Obviously he doesn’t remember all of them

Man what a coincidence. Wanted to learn that song... And what happens you have just released a new tutorial. Very much appreciated!
Carl, you are incredible. Of all the lessons I've found on RUclips, yours are always the best. I've been watching your stuff for years, and it's helped me monumentally.
I miss old metal. Modern metal is very cool, but there is something lacking. Probably the reason I started getting into progressive rock and AOR.
For me it's the drumming. Modern metal drumming is just over the top. Too much showing off. The detuned guitars too. Everything has to be extreme or it's not "heavy".
I get you im 34 so i should be listening to new stuff but I don’t I love the old stuff
Guitar solos definetly
I feel like they almost all sound too similar to each other and the songs are almost predictable. Not as unique as the old bands. Don't get me wrong they're very talented still.

Could you please do Trademark by Eric Johnson, Please?
My enthusiasm for playing this song kind of sinks and I feel horrendously inadequate as a guitarist at "common blues lick but played really fast".
