- How to make a leather messenger bag. In this video I show the process of how I made this 13" black leather messenger bag and documented it from start to finish. Made from black Premium Harvest chrome-tan leather and designed to hold a 12.9" iPad Pro or any other large tablet/small laptop. Features an inside zipper storage pocket, dividing partition, adjustable shoulder strap, convenient grab handle and a twist lock closure. Very cool video. It reminds me of when folks ask what's the hardest part of leatherworking. I always tell them it is making the first cut. Knowing where to begin so you don't waste is a real skill. You displayed that nicely.

I can imagine (yes, I CAN imagine) how long this takes. I make simple wallets and pouches, and maybe because I'm not quite as skilled, they often take me days to complete (I work on and off). I'm guessing this bag took at least half a day. So 12hrs x 15/hr = $180, plus parts makes it probably around $200 if you're paying yourself minimum wage. And then people scoff at the price of handmade goods!
Well probably because the minimum wage in 2021 for Beijing China is about $3.90 an hour, so they can afford to sell their handmade goods very cheap, and often make them from inferior materials. And I think that's why there will always be a market for real handmade goods like yours. Keep up the great work!
If you find someone who appreciates what you make, and all the time, skill & materials it takes to make it, then you’ll have a happy customer who will be willing to pay extra because they understand that they are buying something that is in fact “extra”.

Great job. Excellent craftsmanship & bag. Have you ever put the rivets with the head out? I use the rivets head out on saddles & tack & use a Domer to round the head, so it looks like a round rivet head when looking at it. Either way works fine. It just gives a different eye appeal to the rivets.
