Part two will look at the ways in which alchemical symbolism arose, the influences upon it and the sources from which it drew.
The third part will show how alchemical imagery has now become embedded, subsumed, almost swallowed up, by various extraneous cultural traditions of our time.

You’re quite a generous man to offer up your knowledge freely; I appreciate your willingness to educate others properly. Misinformation is a deviously common thing.
I am also a Scot with an interest in Alchemy. I have never heard of Adam McLean until now, August 2021, and am so glad I have. He seems like a kindred spirit. A thirst for knowledge and a good Scottish, pragmatic approach, along with the hard work and years of research. I'm looking forward to watching all three videos. Good work pal! 🤓👍🏴
As amazing as the content of this video is, I also appreciate that he doesn’t try to talk at a million miles an hour like most people on RUclips or in our culture in general do. He understands the speed at which the human brain absorbs information.
These symbols and images are fascinating but they are useless without a foundation to understand them. It is interesting to revisit them after years of absence and studying gnostic and alchemical works elsewhere and trying to fit in what you believe to know with what you believe they were trying to relay to you. In most cases the core truth to these bizarre and sometimes complex images is astonishingly simple. But you might never have come up with it on your own.

I have always avoided making any serious efforts into studying alchemy, partly due to how flooded it is with modern, wildly differing texts or somewhat muddled attempts to make it accessible. I have the impression that it is really focused on transmutation of ourselves, with the aim to transcend our human limitations. Having said that, this may well be due to influence from eighteenth and nineteenth century authors that simply didn't know what alchemy was really about. I appreciate you making videos like this available.

I’ve studied psychology for a while now... I’m now taking an interest in Alchemy and I must admit that this is a vastly different beast to wrestle with.

As a very young and novice student of the work, I had the immense pleasure and honor to have met Hans Nintzel through some friends.
A wonderful man. If only I had known to what extent I had been honored to have gone to a lecture at his home in Richardson.
I understood (correct or not), he required eggs gathered on the easter equinox. I had a friend with chickens was was excited to take
some to help Mr. Nintzel with supplies for his Oil of Egg. Mr. Nintzel graciously invited me in. We spoke for a bit. Being a bit in awe of
him, I didnt want to take up to much of his time.
I do so wish he were alive now. This was over 30 years ago. I missed such an opportunity living so close to him.
Mr. McLean, I'm studying your work not only to improve myself and further my studies but (in a small way) to honor him.

Hans helped me greatly when I first set up my Hermetic Journal. We often exchanged information about alchemical books and manuscripts - in those days by old-fashioned letter, this was decades before email became available.
@@AdamMcLean its been about 35 years. I was 19 lol. For the longest, i thought this art something inaccessible but to those i read of in books. I passed through an event that opened my eyes as it were. Now im seeing it everywhere. I can imagine Mr Nintzel laughing happliy at my foolishness lol. He told me one story where (due to regulations), the local police would routinely check in on him. A new cop picked up a jar of white lead and started to "taste test". Mr N yelled at him. Said you can test it all you want BUT NOT LIKE THAT IF YOUR HEALTH IS IMPORTANT! TtHATS WHITE LEAD!
The cop sheepishly put it back lol.

I feel that although the modern alchemy may not be the same as historical; I have found that it has helped me use both together to help in my enlightenment of the subject.

Help me understand this better, is/was alchemy the literal mixing of metals and minerals or is it symbolic in the sense that turning lead into gold is more to do with self enlightenment and alchemy overall being more about how to manipulate people?
Alchemy is using herbs, metals, chemicals and other, if you want to manipulate people for no good reasoning then clearly you are black magician. Alchemy; If you want to try this yourself as I do, I am going to purchase a book called; The Book of Alchemy, learn the secrets of the alchemists by Francis Melville, apparently has instructions to make simple herb potions, good luck on your path.
If I understand correctly there is chemical alchemy and spiritual alchemy. Each with it's own goals but similar symbolism.
In the video, there is a drawing which features snakes getting out of 2 mouths, on 2 sides of a triangle. What does it mean?
Adam, have you ever looked into the Voinich Manuscript? Do you have an opinion about it?
It is a puzzling manuscript, but I find no alchemical content in its images.
I am starting my studies into symbolism. I'm working with C.G. Jung materials and without this knowledge there is no understanding. I must confess that I am at ground zero and could use some suggestions. Please reply. Michael
I am not sure that Jung is the source for understanding alchemy. He is the source for understanding Jungian Psychology. The source for understanding alchemy must be the writings of the original alchemists. Basing your understanding on anything else will not lead you to an understanding of alchemy.
