I feel like the griefing done by human players in the poachers clan should have been mentioned in this video. Without that, putting rhinos in D tier is unwarrented. Rhinos being vulnerable to intimidation is not nearly enough of a weakness to justify their placement, as being scared off does little to negatively impact their playthrough, as they are herbivores. In fact, it prevents them from taking even more unnecessary risks than they already do.
Agreed. In comparison to human players, all animals are pretty dumb. Sure, rhinos are dumb, but compared to other animals, not so much as to justify putting them in D tier. Despite all their weaknesses, rhinos are still hard to go up against.
How about F tier because all that tank and muscle means nothing when you’re so blind and stupid, anybody can walk up and pounce on your one and only fatal weakness.
Right? It's so impressive. Whether that elephant learned that trick from it's momma, or figured it out itself. Either option shows a super high level of intelligence. One of many reasons elephants are my favorite animals. Don't get me wrong though, I love rhinos too! Also, nice pfp
Yeah, because they're so enormous and obviously physically powerful, it's easy to underestimate the intelligence of elephants. I bet that elephant knew full well that the stick can't possibly hurt the rhino really, but it would freak the rhino out enough to run away.

@@jeffreygao3956 D Is Still Kinda Low If We Ignore The Disadvantage And Other Stuff Because No Animal Will Mess With A Rhino excluding A Male Elephant In The Season. We can defend the fact its not close to top tier but it doesn't mean it sucks
I feel D tier is a bit harsh. While they definitely have their weaknesses, the fact that they are almost untouchable in the Africa and Asia servers(hard mode) is extremely impressive. The only bad matchups they have are humans and elephants, which could honestly be said for pretty much every species. I think high "C" or low "B" tier would be a more fair placement.
I’d argue for a solid middle C. If you play as a rhino, you ain’t gonna have a good time, but you ain’t gonna have a bad time; you’ll be easily spooked but you also prolly won’t die. Middle of the road feels fair to me
Intelligence is a critical stat is today's meta. don't think you can get above C tier without at least slightly below average int stat. Sadly the rhino only beats the rock in the int stat. The video actually puts it higher that it really is.
This guy doesnt know what hes talking about lmao. He commonly puts animals at an unnecessary position they dont deserve. Hes called salmon a bad species because individuals commonly die in migrations, despite their species being benefited as a whole. Hes also said things like how trike can be taken out by a lion via suffocation (Which I have screenshots of lol) Hes also said leapords could climb trees to kill sauropods lmao. Other examples of misinformation include saying seals evolved from bears, He also loves to base how successful an animal is off of "pvp" skills. So you get wildly successful animals at F tier lmao.
@@Paradigmension They're only endangered because of humans so no, they don't need a buff. If you rate every creature by its lack of ability to deal with humans then virtually every creature would need a buff according to your logic.
I’m a little mixed on this one. On one hand, I agree completely that rhino weaknesses are easily exploitable, and that friendly fire is a huge issue with their strategy. However, having a one sided fight against lions, and holding their own against elephants, hippos, and crocodiles has to be worth something. If the human player base didn’t grief them so hard, maybe rhinos could have a more dominant spot in the meta, but the human player base loves being toxic for the sake of it, while also getting more premium currency out of it.
Strong agree, not to mention players in online communities love to poke fun at the rhino and undervalue its potential, coming from someone who loves the elephant class.
I was also thinking C tier. D-tier feels a little low for a build that has next to no enemies that can damage it. Especially considering how the enemies that can damage it, are like the 2-3 highest tier opponents in the continent and possibly the world (elephants, humans, hippos).
Too bad they keep team killing one another due to how stupid they are, especially considering their respawn times and the fights they just choose to lose because they can’t comprehend that they are strong enough to defeat most of this enemies. Absolutely deserves D tier, garbage build for idiots, but is a cute animal in domestic setting surprisingly.
imo it should be even lower, the fact it has extremely low intelligence means it will always be competing for food and its young are extremely vulnerable even if its extremely hard to kill an adult. It also means it cant effectively group up as a team. This isnt helped by the fact it reproduces slowly. It seems like a build which is optimised around either making it to be either an alpha male or bust, or female and accept massive childbirth risk for life. Just is not ever going to be viable, similar to how pandas are dying out because they just dont wanna bang.
The rhino's bad eyesight and low intelligence often offsets the advantages that its tanky build would have otherwise brought: - You're so bulky that you should be able to win fights and control territory right? Well too bad, you're so blind that you fail to recognize your surroundings to the point where you attack trees and rocks, or you lose resolve too easily in otherwise favourable interactions and get chased off. - You're so tanky that you should have little trouble with escort missions right? Nope, your poor eyesight and intelligence means you cannot party up with other players to ease your burden, it means you cannot effectively control a defensive zone around yourself, and worst of all, it means you are so easily baited away from the escort or even get baited into teamkilling it yourself.
You're really only judging combat when you're using OoC hacks. Try a run-through without a second screen, and without using your previous run-through experience, and rhinos will not give you a fun game even half the time. Between grazing, constantly managing your sensory debuffs and chat aggroing you, and dealing with everything including humans? Rhinos aren't even mid tier, and that's without including the lack of a rear attack option.
Im surprised that he didnt mention one of the most important parts of the Rhino: a Rhinos horn is made out of keratin, which is what makes up our hair and fingernails, although a rhinos horn is extremely extremely tough, it can actually BREAK because its not a skull mounted weapon like say an ibex or wildebeest. Fun fact this why sometimes you see a rhino with a hairy horn 😅
@@spindash64yes, i think thats a bonus point for using as a material for the horn. Although I don't think it's a good one considering regeneration of the horn takes way longer time than them breaking their horns by randomly attacking other classes
Thankfully their hp and mass stat still makes em quite formidable without their horn. I dont want to be the poor lioness player that messes up and gets trampled by an angry rhino player.
Their biggest problem is that the poor eyesight and hyper aggression get them into pointless fights. There's no advantage to be gained in attacking other large herbivores (unless it's two male rhinos fighting over the right to pass on genes.) But they're gonna do it anyway.
@@Jabroniville PVP is only an option if you have a solid and quick re-spawn. Rhinos just take too long to re-spawn and the points are waaay to limited to risk your chara. Also, a just re-spawn rhino will have it hard to make it to its best.
Probably not the fault of the rhino players, Being aggressive as a large herbivore build is a really good strategy, but the downside of both lower intelligence [though not stupid] and poor eyesight means that they fail to make a correct perception check before a potential engagement. The rhino playerbases biggest problem is mostly thanks to some of the human playerbase.
I still think they deserve c tier. I think d and f should be reserved for organisms that legitimately either have issues surviving in the setting of the current meta, or ones that have strategies so specialized or inefficient that it’s perplexing how they made it this far. Rhinos really only have bad matchups against humans and elephants. And if it weren’t for the immense amount human players poaching them, they would be fine in the current meta.
@@gregoryfenn1462 that means elephants are low tier cause of their ivory tusks. which is not a useful ranking cause elephants are actually very adaptable animals with lots of useful tools. its just that humans choose which animal is bad in the meta.
Human griefers shouldn’t be counted as the meta. Humans can counter any play possible with enough preparation and they decided to pick out rhinos for their drops, not their weaknesses. Besides, just try to find a non-human large animal build that can counter cars and guns.
@@johnmarkson1990elephants have about 10x the population of rhinos because they are able to overcome their somewhat bad matchup with humans. Also living in herds, elephants are able to overcome the biggest weakness, defending respawns. Rhinos so easily losing their young and taking so long to respawn automatically puts them in D tier.
I mean, it makes sense. That's a lotta shit to handle in your periphery when you're already focused in on the thing that's twice your size with twice your reach, possibly multiple of them unless it's a bull in musth, in which case the rhino is fucked either way.

I've yet to play on the Africa server myself, let alone as a build that interacts with oxpeckers, but I could have sworn I'd heard about having oxpeckers on you being a mixed blessing--or even a problem. While they can certainly serve as a lookout, I've heard claims that oxpecker players tend to prioritize eating engorged ticks (i.e. ticks that have already done as much damage as possible to their hosts) in order to maximize the experience they gain from each tick they eat. I've even heard some claims that oxpecker players will peck at open wounds on their "perches," slowing the rate at which they recover from said wounds.
Hey TierZoo, a fantastic tutorial guide as always! I have a suggestion to make- The axolotl. I had seen a few videos on them a few years ago and they absolutely blew my mind.
Elephants are capable of painting with their trunk, however, most of the tests and showcases that you see in videos or zafaris are because the people make money and they demand and train the animals to do that. It is sad but at the same time it shows that elephants have the dexterity to do it.
This channel is the best example of something being fun and educational. Lots of people have tried making education fun, but it always feels a little forced, or they sacrifice details in the name of fun. This channel is so fun and so educational I don’t even realize I’m learning. I look forward to every upload on this channel, it’s great.
Can we get a video grading various companion animals in the game? Not just pets that humans keep, but other animals that keep smaller animals to help survive (the spider that keeps frogs to help kill bugs that eats their eggs comes to mind)
Would like to see a video about if hyenas OP. even though he explained it in the underrated video, i would like to see a more indepth video about the traits, advantages, disadvantages, and where they place in the meta currently
He's been on a tear of African mammal videos lately and the hyena has kind of lingered over the proceedings the whole time. Definitely seems like a thing to discuss sooner rather than later.
They're quite a good build, especially with pack hunting. The only unfortunate thing is most hyena players are incels, and blood hunt other creatures. EG, munch crunching on DEEZ NU-
Let us not forget that their horn can actually puncture a female during mating. I learned that in the zoo. By the zookeeper. It happened before. So before they put the 2 together for some chunky loving, then they had to reduce the length of his horn. Else she might suffer death. That is also a very very bad weakness, death by snu snu.
There is so much effort that goes into these. it really is amazing. Me and my friends will passionately argue about this type of thing. Then we'll watch these videos and think we're idiots. Oh shit didn't think of that. Genius, no body does this like you
The Rhino's biggest weakness is that it took the "Valuable Drop" flaw. The Devs were actually going to give Rhinos a buff by making humans farm them but the idea didn't catch on.
Hey Tier Zoo, long time subscriber over here, thanks again for the amazing content. I wanted to comment because I really liked your energy this episode, I don't know if it's just me but it seems you went for a way more fast paced and emotion packed narration, making the video a bunch more engaging! I think it depends on the amount of intelligence. Too intelligent, they might all just blast with laser beams at each other. Too dumb and they will just all randomly trample and stumble over each other until the heaviest has won.
This video just randomly popped up on my feed, and I have to say, I LOVE the style you went with. Talking about an animal like it's a character build in a game is the perfect way to present a nature video XD Also makes me think of all the ridiculous "Best build" videos that people make as if it's the only way to play.
Have you explored the rest of TierZoo's channel? They have made a lot of "Are (build) OP?", and for anyone serious about The Outside, its definitely worth checking out
The game, outside incase you didn’t know is pretty good I do think human build is a little op however there intelligence stat is so op it can buff all there other stats
The issue is, some of the content mentioned in this video are proven to be untrue or flat out misinformation Examples: - Rhinos are not as blind as assumed, they have an average of 200m range of vision and are on par with cat vision, while being better than a rabbit's. 200m vision range is also alot better than a majority of humans today (which wear spectacles). - Low intelligence is not proven at all, and the rhino has been doing fine for millions of years charging at things to make sure they don't get near it. Predators distracting animals to get at their babies is a common strategy used against elephants, wildebeest, deer, antelopes, etc. - Rhinos are not "exceptionally suited" to cold climates, the wooly rhino is the same size as an average white rhino and it did not encounter any short-faced bears. This can be easily googled or read from Wikipedia, but TZ still got it wrong. - The Ice Age was also not more dangerous than modern day, most of the Ice Age animals are an extension of modern Africa's animals but with more biodiversity. - Rhinos didn't evolve into Paraceratherium, Paraceratherium comes from a way earlier diverging branch called Rhinocerotoidea. Early ancestors of Paraceratherium resemble horses superficially more than resembling today's rhinos. This is not a good outlook when you have a large viewerbase and can easily affect scicomm, when information easily found on Wikipedia is also gotten wrong.
Ngl, rhinos should probably dump their stealth in favor of intelligence, I mean, why hide when you can essentially be a bulldozer that smart enough to not get baited
Whist I agree that they are a bit lower on the tier list just 2 quick things and that we’re worth mentioning. Rhinos have an excellent sense of both hearing and smell, with evidence to suggest that can can distinguish between others of there own kind and other predator species. While not enough to set off bad eyesight and low intelligence I do believe it mitigates that disadvantage somewhat. This along with the fact that there only bad matchup is with the largest land animal in the game and humans makes me believe rhinos at least deserve high C tier. Overall great video, very informative and entertaining. Good job my friend
Just visited local zoo today. Out local Rhino is the one me and my kid always look forward to seeing the most. No matter the season and the weather, rhino is always chill, there is something very comforting in observing him.

It also usually lives in another biome, so I hope you will have a follow up informational video about them, maybe around end of March or start of April would be good.
Honestly a unicorn sounds like a truly OP rhino. It would have the kicks to protect the rear, still have the advantages of the horn on the front and the armor and hopefully better eyesight. I'm imagining something approximately like the cross between a Clydesdale or Shire and an Indian Rhino. Now that would be a terrifyingly majestic creature

We can defend the fact its not close to top tier but it doesn't mean it sucks
Don't forget about the awesome horn though.
@@jeffreygao3956you sound awfully like a rhino player rn
It's basically the Bastiodon Theorem in action.

@@Paradigmension
They're only endangered because of humans so no, they don't need a buff.
Yeah the human player base is their toughest matchup. So many (sub)species are endangered due to poaching and habitat loss...
Strong agree, not to mention players in online communities love to poke fun at the rhino and undervalue its potential, coming from someone who loves the elephant class.
Man its so refreshing to see those sub numbers up in the millions now, these videos have always been top-tier and creative af
And incredibly entertaining, even if you don't care about gaming
The rhino's bad eyesight and low intelligence often offsets the advantages that its tanky build would have otherwise brought:
- You're so bulky that you should be able to win fights and control territory right?
Hairy horn?🌚🌚
Id argue that’s a benefit to the Rhino rather than a flaw, as it means their main form of defense is able to be repaired if damaged
You're talking about a hairy horner?
Not to be confused with Harry Horner.
Years later and yet the quality is the same if not better. Hats off for the dedication and storytelling.
Their biggest problem is that the poor eyesight and hyper aggression get them into pointless fights. There's no advantage to be gained in attacking other large herbivores (unless it's two male rhinos fighting over the right to pass on genes.) But they're gonna do it anyway.
If you had one of the most powerful builds in the game, wouldn't you do the same?
@@galerinha Yeah there's no crime in just loving PVP.
small and agile rather than big tank and slow
But that's the point, humans are a major part of the current meta and rhinos are a terrible player choice in this meta.
I'd argue D because their respawn rates are still a problem.

This is a genuinely amazing channel. It gives off information and entertainment in high quality videos. Huge respect towards this guy for making this type of content.
Kinda wish this one was better researched though. The argument on bulk makes no sense, for instance. The bulk of modern rhino's still keeps them save from predators, so its still useful. Not to mention the short-faced bear and woolly rhino didn't even overlap. Plus, he mentioned the whole thing about eyesight. But rhino's having bad eyes was already debunked in 2008.
@@megadracosaurus Rhinoceroses have a pretty mediocre eyesight at most. Which of course doesn't mean their vision is horrible you're right don't get me wrong. But the bulk isn't really that useful because of their already tough and thick skin. It still isn't as useless as he made it seem but you get the idea. The short faced bear and Woolley rhino indeed never crossed paths with each other you are 100% correct on that one. I mostly agree with your comment but keep in mind most people including myself aren't going to fully trust a RUclips video. I still do research myself but this man's content is very informative even if not 100% factually correct.

You should change the “respawn” to “spawn” as respawn is the same individual that comes back to life and that doesn’t happen. Spawning would be a better fit as you can use it when a player is spawning into the game.
rhino builds also suffered from a forum post a while back that erroneously claimed that rhino horn was some sweet lot and could be used as a potion buffer.

I didn't know what size a Rhino was but it's attitude really makes itself seem bigger than it is

Elephants are capable of painting with their trunk, however, most of the tests and showcases that you see in videos or zafaris are because the people make money and they demand and train the animals to do that. It is sad but at the same time it shows that elephants have the dexterity to do it.

Love how the rhino had pretty much the same moveset a Rhyhorn could learn (even if it was completely not optimal). Thats awesome

The Rhino's biggest weakness is that it took the "Valuable Drop" flaw. The Devs were actually going to give Rhinos a buff by making humans farm them but the idea didn't catch on.
Because the environmental activists won't allow it!

The issue is, some of the content mentioned in this video are proven to be untrue or flat out misinformation
Examples:
- Rhinos are not as blind as assumed, they have an average of 200m range of vision and are on par with cat vision, while being better than a rabbit's.

Honestly a unicorn sounds like a truly OP rhino. It would have the kicks to protect the rear, still have the advantages of the horn on the front and the armor and hopefully better eyesight.
