This can’t be quantified as Rock!? This is Rock, Funk, Jazz and Fusion mixed in a bowl and you get “Frankenstein!” Both Winter brothers are so underrated yet killer musicians!
No..Nobody with a brain under-rates Johnny or Edgar Winter...
I saw Johnny when I was 17 & Edgar at some point in the 90s
@@t.j.payeur5331 AGREED! Only Underrated if unknown to people.✌🏼
You guys were loose and having fun with Frankenstein - and it was a pleasure to watch, with so many of us knowing one surprise after another was yet to come. I don’t know anout being “the Black Edgar”though as Edgar and Johnny are both albinos (notice one of their albums was called “They Only Come Out at Night). Maybe Edgar is the White You. 😂
The guitar player (dressed in white) is Rick Derringer who had a terrific career of his own, starting at age 16 with his first hit “Hang On Sloopy,” which he wrote in 1965 at age 16. He is a highly respected guitarist. I saw Rick as a solo act anout 5 times from the mid ‘70s to early ‘80s, and twice more with Edgar Winter as shown in this video. Such great times! At age 63 now, I’d like to go back to the 70s a couple days a week if it were possible. Hangin’ with you guys is pretty close!
Thank you kindly for taking us along on your journey, fellas.
Genre boundaries in the early 70s were fluid
Chuck Ruff is one HELL of a drummer!
Did he ever go on to do anything else significant after the Edgar Winter Group broke up? You always hear about Edgar, Dan Hartman, Rick Derringer and Ronnie Montrose’s post EWG endeavors, but you never hear about Chuck.
Unfortunately he has passed on, RIP.
@@crescentfreshbret he worked with Sammy Hagar on his 4th and 5th albums, other than that I can't see anything notable, and he sadly passed in 2011
This is a true LIVE version which is like the album version but boosted 1000%. You should check out the album version then come back to this version. Such an awesome tune
Rick Derringer playing all those incredible harmonies on lead guitar must be acknowledged.
It’s Ronnie Montrose.
@@KennyCamaro2364 On the album, but not here, Kenny. That is Rick.
@@KennyCamaro2364.. It's Rick Derringer on guitar and Dan "I Can Dream About You" Hartman on the bassline..
@@KennyCamaro2364 it's Derringer.
Rocknroll hootchie coo
In England we are very respect... Edgar Winter... First class ! Bros
This was actually a radio hit back then. Shorter version tho.
I'm so blown away at all these rappers /musicians that have never heard all the greats from the 60s and 70s.
Our parents never played this stuff in the house
The night I saw Edgar Winter He had a TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW, LYNYRD SKYNYRD OPENED FOR HIM three nights after the Famous Knebworth England show where LS SMOKED THE ROLLING STONES!! EDGAR DID A AWESOME SHOW IM GLAD I SAW HIM!!🐐🎹🎷🥁!!😍😁
Dan Hartman is the bass player.. he went on to have a lot of success after he left the band
Fun fact: While performing this song, Edgar also served hamburgers at the commissary and did a bit of drywall spackling. Honest.
I've see Edgar live in Detroit .. always a great performancer.
I listen to this band when I was a teenager loves their instrumental
Every reaction to this version is the same: everybody just shakes their head. Yeah, massive talent on that stage. Check out the song "Free Ride."
Yes. Johnny and Edgar both played together and had solo careers. We played this song in mid 1970s on our stereo during parties.
Never gets old.
All that musicianship and it was live.
One of the most iconic songs from the 70's. I remember blasting this from Dad's Hi Fi system back in the day. Yes, that is Edgar Winter, Johnnie Winter's brother. He formed The Edgar Winter group. That is Rick Derriger on guitar.
Cheers
and Dan Hartman on bass
And the phenomenal Chuck Ruff on drums.
The guitarist, Rick Derringer , has a great song Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo
Oh man, I was wondering when you guys would get here 🙂. This performance is just flat-out epic, there's no other word for it. Edgar Winter is a bad man with any instrument you put in front of him - add Rick Derringer on guitar and a killer rhythm section and you've got musical genius. Making my morning once again - peace and love from Canada!
** This was a live performance for a BBC show, no audience in the studio, but killer stuff all the way.
Wouldn’t it be cool to see a cover
WOW can you imagine the carnage
Famous Dan Hartman__Playin' The Bass
E & J...Two Texas Albino brothers growing up who had to stay out of the Sun, and so became phenomenal musicians instead. Edgar is the true INVENTOR of the Strap on KEYTAUR!
He is still going. I saw him with Ringo Starr and the All-Stars the summer before last. Magnificent of course.
You forgot the hand grenade.
Yeah, he brought that, too!😅😅
One of the greatest live performances ever.
Genius.
Thanks y'all!!
Rick Derringer on guitar. Dan hartman on bass. Never knew the drummer but he's a king.
No, came to a fist fight with a nuclear bomb.
Oh Yes he did😂
The black Edgar Winter...that's hilarious LMFAO. Loved your reaction, boys. BTW, that is an ARP 2600 Edgar was playing. He was the 1st to ever strap a huge keyboard controller around his neck, so he could have mobility on the stage while playing his synthesizer. Phenomenal and genius. Some say Edgar is the father of the keytar. He is also a phenomenal blues singer. Johnny passed a few years back but Edgar is still with us.
I had a huge ARP 2600 poster in my dorm room. Wish I still had it…. You’re right, these guys’ reaction to what was going down way back in 1973 is priceless!
ARP 2600's are so cool. Everything from Frankenstein to PYT
Waiting for the show
Number one record in 1973! It went to the one!
Yes that was a huge hit on fm radio
This is an iconic instrumental in rock history. The shortened radio version was a huge hit. Your faces were just FAF when Edgar kept switching instruments and killing those keys and synth, sax and timbales. Loved your reaction to this classic. 😂❤
Edgar sang, played keys & sax 🎷 on Tobacco Road.... This is his "solo" band ... ✌️😎
Beyond amazing! Wow! Yes Johnny is his brother.. All of these players are phenomenal 🔥. I truly enjoyed and appreciate your reaction! Thank you for sharing!
Yes. brother of Johnny.
"You're the Black Edgar!" I died. BRAND IT NAO!!!
The great Rick Derringer is playing guitar here. You should check out his hit "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" There is a good chance you have heard, but it still worth a listen. It was a staple on rock radio back in the day.
This is another great performance from the 1970s, when bands were more important than singers and virtuoso musicianship was fueled by competition between bands to make that period the best for concert experiences. Concerts today seem to be all about the spectacle and less about the music. When I see a current popular artist on TV, I can't help but think "This athletic dance troupe also has a good singer." The albino twins Edgar and Johnny Winter were both incredible artists and talented musicians. Thanks for playing this live version, which we would have seen once when it was on TV, then never again, until RUclips brought these performances back to the fans. I'm just as happy for you guys that you can discover music from the 60s and 70s through your channel.
You just gotta be prepared for Edgar Winter... Throw in his brother Johnny and what you get is almost undescribable...
Edgar, his brother Johnny, Neil Sedaka and Ted Nugget are some of the biggest RnR HOF omissions.
You’ve now done the best two videos on RUclips of Edgar. Time to dive into JOHNNY! A much deeper, soulful, and LEGENDARY catalog! Every one on RUclips sees Edgar and goes nuts (deservedly) BUT JOHNNY had a much more influential career. JOHNNY IS THE MAN!
Saw them several times in Sactown. Guitarist on this video was Ronnie Montrose, a great guitarist who played with Sammy Hagar, Gamma, Van Morrison and did his own stuff. He was one of the few musicians who worked with Van who couldn’t read music.
No one ever talks about how good the drummer is in this video. I guess he's overshadowed by Edgar's performance....
I went back and watched and the drummer is killing it back there but yes, Edgar stole the show my first time watching.
Imagine if you will it is the early 70s. You are 19 or 20. You are at a friends house that owns a huge powerful stereo. He passes you a joint and you hear this for the first time. I don’t have to imagine.
Mind blowing
Lol @ "He should have a cape on!" Played this 45 to death, took it from my older brother. I remember it was an orange label.
This was a live performance in England at the old grey Whistle Stop Edgar Winter invented the keyboards held by straps he and Johnny Winter had two separate groups fight together just once in awhile
That's an ARP2600 synthesizer. "The box" is the instrument, the keyboard Edgar is wearing around his neck is only the "controler unit" - so an extension sending signals to the ARP. But you could create a continuous envelope signal directly on the ARP, and then manipulate it through volume and color, or change the wave form. Creating those moments on stage in 1972 was a bit tricky, because analog sound design doesn't always allow an exact repetition of events. So each night on stage you never really knew how it will turn out.
That's why the guys back then are now called the pioneers, because they all had to do it the hard way, simply because technology today was nothing like them . But of course we had some of the best musicians then too who all paved the way 👍
Yeah ARP 2600 was definitely normally used as a studio piece, only a few musicians were this good at using it as an actual live performance device
Way before MIDI...
The Edgar Winter Group "Free Ride"...Nuff Said.
u got That rite
The "black Edgar"! I love it.... this is truly a phenomenal performance.
yes, this is a "live" performance... I think it was "The Midnight Special", so a studio audience, but it was definitely live. With Rick Derringer (Rock'n'Roll Whoo-chi-koo sp?) on guitar.
Edgar won best contemporary blue's album in 2023. "Blue's for Johnny". Does that surprise anyone?
Rick Derringer on guitar- “ Rock and Roll Hootchi Koo” and Tommy Shannon on bass- who would later play for Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Whenever I hear this I think of Sanford and Son!
You should listen to him and his brother sing together. Tobacco road is pretty good.
My band opened for these guys in the mid '90s in Charlottesville, VA and they totally blew the roof off the place!!!
Man this song was soooo awesome back in the 70s my dad came home with our 74 custom Dodge Van and he had a 8 track in it with quadrapfonic sound where the music would jump around the speakers it was frickin awesome every time I hear this song.....Egar Winters they only com out at night👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yes...
Heard the song a million times but seeing that performance blew me away dude lit used that machine to blow up the song at the end
Amazing talent. 😎
The Edgar Winter Group album called They Only Come out at Night would be a killer record for ya'll to react to every song on. 10 songs and all are different styles.
The bass man Dan Hartman had hits of his own later in his career. I Can Dream About You and Instant Replay are 2 I recall. Guitarist Rick Derringer had an early hit with his group The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy, Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo later. Chuck Ruf was a great drummer also.
The guy playing bass in this clip, is Dan Hartman, who had a hit with I Can Dream About You.
and when you listen, remember the name of the song, Frankenstein...and the music fit...lol I always felt Edgar was Dr Frankenstein, they way he jumped around to diff instruments and back, was like he was adding parts to make a monster of a song...lol....but is true! I always felt bad for Frankie....once again, Outstanding react
He was widely regarded as one of the greatest alto sax players in the world
Frankenstein was built from a bunch of different parts .....right?
OK, this means you must hear his brother Johnny Winter (R.I.P.) "BE CAREFUL WITH A FOOL"
Listen to Johnny Winters ( mean town blues) 1971 cph, one of the best guitar players you will ever hear!!!
Great reaction guys as usual. Edgar was a virtuoso musician on any instrument he touched. He didn't invent the strapped keyboard but pioneered it along with the keyboard with a guitar neck as well. Check out Free Ride which was another EWG hit.
saw this played live myself ; amazing
I first heard Edgar Winter with the song "Tobacco Road" and I was flashed. After that I bought several albums and whas fascinated. He played several different instruments on every album and that was sensational at the time. What a great musician - thanks for sharing. Best regards @all from hamburg (germany)
Rick Derringer was playing lead guitar on this - and produced this, as well.
Yeah studio version
I grew up with mono speakers. There wasn't stereo. I had a 1976 Cobra II, black and gold - google it. The part near the end that starts low and sounds like ju ju ju ju was the first stereo affect I had heard, and the sound MOVED ARCROSS MY DASH. I was blown away.
Check out the live version of Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo from the album Roadwork by Edgar Winter's White Trash with Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer on guitars. Best version by far.
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, I was driving south on 880 in Oakland and was at the Oakland Coliseum Complex. In the lane to my left was a limo and standing up through the moon roof was an Albino with long hair! I knew it was one of two people and I am not sure till this day which. BUT Johnny was on the Marquee.
He was playing the feedback off his keyboards that's why he was so close to his amp
Johnny and Edgar both musical geniuses. I believe that’s Rick Derringer on the guitar.
Oh please listen to the studio version of this song. Well worth your time! I saw him when he was Edgar Winter's White Trash around 1970 before this ever came out. Dr.John opened for them and it was a great concert to see before they were world famous.
seen him and his brother in concerts a few times ...they are legendary in rock n roll
Edgar brought a rocket propelled grenade ‘rpg’, a bazooka, and an Apache helicopter to a fist fight…and called it “Frankenstein”….✌️😎😵💫😂🎤💪👽
The little guy in white playing guitar is Rick Derringer. He was a producer on this album.
He was also in a band called The McCoy's who had a hit in the sixties wuth the song "Hang On Sloopy". He went on into the seventies as a solo act and had a hit called "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo".
He opened for Heart when I saw then in 1977.
Both he and Edgar haved played in Ringo Starrs All Star Band.
Johnny and Edgar both had their own separate bands, but they did plenty of collaborations with each other as well. Johnny was a hardcore blues fanatic for the most part. Edgar mixed it up a bit more with different styles of music. Both insane talents though.
Once again, the soundtrack of our lives….we just figured it was normal, being so creative! Thanks for bringing it back to us! Killer all the way!
Sound track of our lives ! You nailed it !
And we got the best sound track EEEVVVAAAAAAA
Yes turning on the radio and hearing Frankenstein was a normal day in the life. This song and Billy Preston’s Outa Space were the instrumentals that cracked through the Top 40 way back when
AND THIS WAS LIVE!!!! I've always loved this song even though I was not even a teenager yet in 73. Thankfully my Dad loved all kinds of music and I grew up listening to everything. Great review glad you enjoyed it as much as the rest of us here 🙂
I was eighteen here and I taught MY Dad!
I grew up listening to everything as well; was born in 67 to very young parents, so I was exposed to all the greats!! Forever grateful ❤
I was born 1960, so I was exposed to all kinds of music I loved it all rock pop soul jazz you name it I heard it music was everything to me then, and it still is ❤
Theremin effect, innit? Popular in the ‘70’s. Notably: had been used by bands such as Zeppelin - e.g. - middle section is Whole Lotta Love
Hey guys identify yourself for us sox hat eyes almost popped out love your reviews guys
A tour de force!!! Love you two!!! If you ever need an extra grandma hit me up. ☮️❤️
The studio version is worth a listen. Classic jam. :)
Edgar was an incredible musician he could play anything you put in front. Incredible curb and they didn't stay together long but they made their Mark in music. Best Rick Derringer on the lead guitar by the
That’s Rick Derringer on guitar. Rick is a great guitarist. His first hit, he was 16 in a group called the McCoys. The song was a pop hit called Sloopy Hang On in 1967. His biggest hit was Rock and Roll Hootchie-Coo!!! He’s still performing I think.
The genius that is Edgar. What a band!!! Amazing & FANTASTIC! Is that the best live performance by a musician ever? I'm casting my vote!
You are both intelligent and inquisitive. Really enjoy your interaction with each other...
Yeah, you should have been there with us in 1973. This was very popular, unique and brand new. Edgar Winter was rock - like this, and his brother Johnny was playing the blues. Great reaction as always, guys!
That's when it was cool to play a musical instrument. And master it!
Yes, hours, weeks, months and years of dedication to learn your craft.
The Black Edgar,I just shot coffee through my Nose!
😂
Johnny and Edgar Winter are both incredible. I'd suggest checking out Edgar Winter's White Trash, the band he formed before this band. They are a funky Texas blues band with an incredible horn section. Edgar's genius!
Yes Edgar was Johnny's brother. They were both albino. Having two albino siblings is really rare. Frankenstein was like Tush by ZZ Top. They were both composed during a sound check. Some people just stumble over good fortune. This was a good version, but I prefer the album version. I've found that the live version of a song is "iffy" on youtube. I know you are reacting the first time experiencing a song. I am enjoying your videos. Greg in TN 😀
Riding with the brothers to an all time classic instrumental. This song blows doors off hinges!!! Tremendous!!! Edgar Winter!!!
Ball Hair!
@Dick C Normis what we need is a strike hair!!! You ladies working? They call me Charloots!!!
Edgar played music in his own Space & Time. You should give his brother Johnny Winter a listen - tunes like "Highway 61 Revisited',
'Be Careful With A Fool' (Great Song), 'Memory Pain,' Hustle Down in Texas' and his cover of Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode.'
Albums like "Johnny Winter (1969)", The Progressive Blues Experiment (1968), Let Me In (1991), Live Johnny Winter Ang (1971),
Guitar Slinger (1984) and Second Winter (1969). He was a Blues/Rock Icon; RIP, Johnny.
My dad threatened to throw out my record player if I didn't stop playing this LP😂 Could only play when he was away ❤
"Tobacco Road" was Edgar sitting in with brother Johnny's band (which included Stevie Ray Vaughan's future bassist Tommy Shannon). This was Edgar's band.
The studio version is allot more concise and polished but this is always fun to see. The ending is a not as long in the studio version.
Agree 100%
Loved it when this came on the radio back in the day! :) Loved your reactions!!
