Did he ever go on to do anything else significant after the Edgar Winter Group broke up? You always hear about Edgar, Dan Hartman, Rick Derringer and Ronnie Montrose’s post EWG endeavors, but you never hear about Chuck.
This can’t be quantified as Rock!? This is Rock, Funk, Jazz and Fusion mixed in a bowl and you get “Frankenstein!” Both Winter brothers are so underrated yet killer musicians!
You guys were loose and having fun with Frankenstein - and it was a pleasure to watch, with so many of us knowing one surprise after another was yet to come. I don’t know anout being “the Black Edgar”though as Edgar and Johnny are both albinos (notice one of their albums was called “They Only Come Out at Night). Maybe Edgar is the White You. 😂 The guitar player (dressed in white) is Rick Derringer who had a terrific career of his own, starting at age 16 with his first hit “Hang On Sloopy,” which he wrote in 1965 at age 16. He is a highly respected guitarist. I saw Rick as a solo act anout 5 times from the mid ‘70s to early ‘80s, and twice more with Edgar Winter as shown in this video. Such great times! At age 63 now, I’d like to go back to the 70s a couple days a week if it were possible. Hangin’ with you guys is pretty close! Thank you kindly for taking us along on your journey, fellas.
One of the most iconic songs from the 70's. I remember blasting this from Dad's Hi Fi system back in the day. Yes, that is Edgar Winter, Johnnie Winter's brother. He formed The Edgar Winter group. That is Rick Derriger on guitar. Cheers
yes, this is a "live" performance... I think it was "The Midnight Special", so a studio audience, but it was definitely live. With Rick Derringer (Rock'n'Roll Whoo-chi-koo sp?) on guitar.
Oh man, I was wondering when you guys would get here 🙂. This performance is just flat-out epic, there's no other word for it. Edgar Winter is a bad man with any instrument you put in front of him - add Rick Derringer on guitar and a killer rhythm section and you've got musical genius. Making my morning once again - peace and love from Canada! ** This was a live performance for a BBC show, no audience in the studio, but killer stuff all the way.
That's an ARP2600 synthesizer. "The box" is the instrument, the keyboard Edgar is wearing around his neck is only the "controler unit" - so an extension sending signals to the ARP. But you could create a continuous envelope signal directly on the ARP, and then manipulate it through volume and color, or change the wave form. Creating those moments on stage in 1972 was a bit tricky, because analog sound design doesn't always allow an exact repetition of events. So each night on stage you never really knew how it will turn out.
That's why the guys back then are now called the pioneers, because they all had to do it the hard way, simply because technology today was nothing like them . But of course we had some of the best musicians then too who all paved the way 👍
TRUST ME My Music Lovin' Brothers On This Legendary & Iconic Group That Often Toured With Santana,, WAR "Low Rider",, The Cisco Kid",, "The World Is A Ghetto",, "Slippin' Into Darkness",, "All Day Music",, Four Cornred Room",, "Gypsy Man",, "Me And Baby Brother",, "Why Can't We Be Friends" &"Summer"..Etc..Etc.
This is an iconic instrumental in rock history. The shortened radio version was a huge hit. Your faces were just FAF when Edgar kept switching instruments and killing those keys and synth, sax and timbales. Loved your reaction to this classic. 😂❤
Oh please listen to the studio version of this song. Well worth your time! I saw him when he was Edgar Winter's White Trash around 1970 before this ever came out. Dr.John opened for them and it was a great concert to see before they were world famous.
The black Edgar Winter...that's hilarious LMFAO. Loved your reaction, boys. BTW, that is an ARP 2600 Edgar was playing. He was the 1st to ever strap a huge keyboard controller around his neck, so he could have mobility on the stage while playing his synthesizer. Phenomenal and genius. Some say Edgar is the father of the keytar. He is also a phenomenal blues singer. Johnny passed a few years back but Edgar is still with us.
I had a huge ARP 2600 poster in my dorm room. Wish I still had it…. You’re right, these guys’ reaction to what was going down way back in 1973 is priceless!
One of the most supremely talented muscians on the planet. He excels at guitar, keyboards, sax, drums...and anything he picks up. I've seen him live many times, and he is beyond gifted.
Beyond amazing! Wow! Yes Johnny is his brother.. All of these players are phenomenal 🔥. I truly enjoyed and appreciate your reaction! Thank you for sharing!
The great Rick Derringer is playing guitar here. You should check out his hit "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" There is a good chance you have heard, but it still worth a listen. It was a staple on rock radio back in the day.
This is a true LIVE version which is like the album version but boosted 1000%. You should check out the album version then come back to this version. Such an awesome tune
This was a MONSTER Mammoth Hit on Every radio station for over a year when released and still played on Classic Rock radio stations around the country everyday !!! A true Classic Rock Classic !!! 👍🎶🎹🎷🥁🎼
The bass man Dan Hartman had hits of his own later in his career. I Can Dream About You and Instant Replay are 2 I recall. Guitarist Rick Derringer had an early hit with his group The McCoys - Hang On Sloopy, Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo later. Chuck Ruf was a great drummer also.
This was a live performance from The Old Grey Whistle Test, a 1970’s U.K. t.v. Show on BBC television which showcased cutting edge music. It was essential weekly viewing for lovers of serious music.
The little guy in white playing guitar is Rick Derringer. He was a producer on this album. He was also in a band called The McCoy's who had a hit in the sixties wuth the song "Hang On Sloopy". He went on into the seventies as a solo act and had a hit called "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo". He opened for Heart when I saw then in 1977. Both he and Edgar haved played in Ringo Starrs All Star Band.
This reaction reminds me that you enjoyed Humble Pie's "Black Coffee," but you haven't seen the live version, which is as much fun as this fantastic jam. Steve Marriott is an amazing singer and this classic tune, written by Ike Turner specifically for Steve's vocals, from the English TV show Old Grey Whistle Test is one of my favorite performances. Thanks!
Humble Pie: Up Your Sleeves live off Eat It, I Believe to My Soul from Live at Winterland 1973 or I Don't Need No Doctor Live at the Filmore. The magnificent Humble Pie!
The night I saw Edgar Winter He had a TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW, LYNYRD SKYNYRD OPENED FOR HIM three nights after the Famous Knebworth England show where LS SMOKED THE ROLLING STONES!! EDGAR DID A AWESOME SHOW IM GLAD I SAW HIM!!🐐🎹🎷🥁!!😍😁
That’s Rick Derringer on guitar. Rick is a great guitarist. His first hit, he was 16 in a group called the McCoys. The song was a pop hit called Sloopy Hang On in 1967. His biggest hit was Rock and Roll Hootchie-Coo!!! He’s still performing I think.
Yes turning on the radio and hearing Frankenstein was a normal day in the life. This song and Billy Preston’s Outa Space were the instrumentals that cracked through the Top 40 way back when
Imagine if you will it is the early 70s. You are 19 or 20. You are at a friends house that owns a huge powerful stereo. He passes you a joint and you hear this for the first time. I don’t have to imagine.
Had the good fortune to see Mr. Edgar Winter twice, once when he opened for The Allman Brothers Band of all people, and once with his brother Johnny on the "Hey, Where's Your Brother? Tour". He is a VERY talented musician and singer, and he is still active. The guitarist in this video is Rick Derringer, who had his own hit with "Rock and Roll Hoochie-Koo", back in the 1970's.
The Edgar Winters band is absolutely one of the best! They are a very talented group. They can play almost every musical instrument that exist! The synthesizer adds to this really cool song. I love it! ❤️
Yeah, you should have been there with us in 1973. This was very popular, unique and brand new. Edgar Winter was rock - like this, and his brother Johnny was playing the blues. Great reaction as always, guys!
Sadly we may never see this level of musicianship again. Not too many people around today who will put the time and effort in to become as accomplished as Edgar!
AND THIS WAS LIVE!!!! I've always loved this song even though I was not even a teenager yet in 73. Thankfully my Dad loved all kinds of music and I grew up listening to everything. Great review glad you enjoyed it as much as the rest of us here 🙂
I was born 1960, so I was exposed to all kinds of music I loved it all rock pop soul jazz you name it I heard it music was everything to me then, and it still is ❤
Edgar was an incredible musician he could play anything you put in front. Incredible curb and they didn't stay together long but they made their Mark in music. Best Rick Derringer on the lead guitar by the
Edgar Winter, another great musician (...from Texas). First musician to actually take a full size keyboard synthesizer and put straps on it...the evolution of the keytar.
Edgar is now playing with Ringo Starr's All Star Band. Edgar is still amazing! I had the privilege of seeing Johnny Winter live at Summerfest, Milwaukee, Wisconsin around 1980 at the Old Style Stage and was blown away!🎸
Saw them in concert in 1977 with the Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynryd at Legion Field in Birmingham, AL where Alabama play Auburn. It was incredible. At the end, when Skynryd was playing Freebird the city cut the power and there was a riot. Unreal.
Saw the Edgar Winter Group on this album tour - at my High School. I've been a Winters Brothers fan ever since. (Thanks for Tobacco Road, btw. A long time jam favorite)
Edgar played music in his own Space & Time. You should give his brother Johnny Winter a listen - tunes like "Highway 61 Revisited', 'Be Careful With A Fool' (Great Song), 'Memory Pain,' Hustle Down in Texas' and his cover of Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode.' Albums like "Johnny Winter (1969)", The Progressive Blues Experiment (1968), Let Me In (1991), Live Johnny Winter Ang (1971), Guitar Slinger (1984) and Second Winter (1969). He was a Blues/Rock Icon; RIP, Johnny.
"Tobacco Road" was Edgar sitting in with brother Johnny's band (which included Stevie Ray Vaughan's future bassist Tommy Shannon). This was Edgar's band.
I'm old and I originally heard this in 1973 and I loved it. The days of live music on weekly television. This was recorded at the BBC for their show entitled The Old Grey Whistle Test. It always showcased up and coming bands from the time and you can find some real gems on there. All the studio work was totally live with no audience. .
Thank you thank you thank you! Edgar Winter is a rare talent…this was 1971…precursor to heavy metal, prog, and blues/rock fusion. the “White Trash” album is full of gems. give a listen to “Save the Planet”, “I’ve Got News for you” and “ Dying to Live” from the White Trash studio album…
You have been Frakenschteeened ..The guy Dan Hartman playing the bass wrote the song Living in America that James Brown made into a huge hit ..If you remember a hit called Instant Replay and I Can Dream about You ,that is the guy .. Edgar had a 1st album solo called Entrance and then he had the White Trash Band, one studio and a live album ,that is all ,they were awesome and then this band The Edgar Winter Group and then Edgar went solo again by 1975 .. Band connections was very short lived but really great and his song Dying To Live has been sampled by Eminem and Tupac .
He should, is right! love how these '70s TV versions sound, they are killer! you guys rock! grew up a Sox, Cicero, our new black Edgar, bass sounds killer!
Edgar was Johnny's younger brother and the two were a Texas duo since they were kids and went their own ways in the 70's and hooked up for a few tours and albums. Johnny went more Blues. Johnny passed a couple of years ago and Edgar did a tribute album with guests last year which won a grammy. Still going strong.
I was a 12 black boy when the studio version hit the radio, and MAAAAAAAAANNNN!!!? This is the one that hooked me on rock & roll and drums!! I would crank this up as loud as my grandmother would tolerate and play the air drums and air guitar LOL!! Back then, there were few radio stations so they played everything so you got a real good education in musicality in probably the greatest era of musical innovation!! So many groups had a fusion of rock, jazz, folk, blues, soul and gospel. But yeah, the shorter studio version is that FIRE!!
This song was actually performed three years previously with his older brother Johnny Winter at the Royal Albert Hall in 1970. This rare recording was released in 2004 as one of several live bonus tracks. Which is on Johnny Winter's Second Winter album. (Loved what ya'll said "Che is the new Black Edgar Winter)🤣This was fun thanx for sharing guys
I bought the record and played this on my portable record player as a 13 yr old in 1973, over & over again. This was the bomb back then, still is. Man, tripping me out on the memories guys! Nice 💜
Yes, Edgar and Johnny Winter are brothers. Two albino brothers from Texas with crazy musical talent. Please also check out Johnny Winter's performance at Woodstock.
I saw Johnny and Edgar together in 71 or 72. Saw Edgar with Rick Derringer later in the late 70s in Albany Ga. Atlanta Rythm Section opened for his band. Saw Johnny later in the 90s in BHM at a music festival. Always kicked ass. Great reaction to this performance. Black Edgar had me LMAO 🤣
"that machine" is an ARP synthesizer. he has the big modular one with the keyboard controller. Most of those lived in studios and didn't tour, but Edgar took his out and they made each other famous. ARP also made the full keyboard size with the synthesizer circuits above the keys, as made famous by Stevie Wonder, Bernie Worrell of P-Funk, and Junie Morrison of the Ohio Players..... Junie's ARP is the Funky Worm sound effect still used in hiphop today! I am lucky enough to own a rare ARP that was played by Bernie Worrell in 2010. It's the last model they made as they went out of business in 1983, only 10 short years after this video. Business is hard.
You know Edgar. The guitarist on this is Rick Derringer who also produced a lot for Edgar and Edgar's brother, Johnny. Johnny Winter is one of the best rock/blues guitarist's who has ever lived. Everything from Chicago to Delta blues to rock. His album Still Alive And Well is one of the best blues/rock albums ever made. From Rock Me Baby to a great cover of the Stone's Let It Bleed, you would be doing yourselves a favor to hit that album.
I remember being six years old and staying awake till around 12am when I watched this performance. I remember trippin’ off the modulator instrument for years beyond that.
Chuck Ruff is one HELL of a drummer!

Yeah ARP 2600 was definitely normally used as a studio piece, only a few musicians were this good at using it as an actual live performance device
Way before MIDI...
Fun fact: While performing this song, Edgar also served hamburgers at the commissary and did a bit of drywall spackling. Honest.

seen him and his brother in concerts a few times ...they are legendary in rock n roll
He should, is right! love how these '70s TV versions sound, they are killer! you guys rock! grew up a Sox, Cicero, our new black Edgar, bass sounds killer!
Another song similar to this one is Hocus Pocus by the band Focus. If you do check this out, you absolutely need to do the live version! God Bless!
I was lucky enough to see them do this live several years back, when the opened up for Alice Cooper and Deep Purple. It was a great show.
He is still going. I saw him with Ringo Starr and the All-Stars the summer before last. Magnificent of course.
It was called Frankenstein because they stitched together three different previous song ideas into one overall piece.
We gotta check that out. Thanks for rocking with us!!
My Brother in Law grew up in Beaumont Tx and went to high school with Edgar’s brother Johnny, who was an excellent guitarist in his own right.
I bought the record and played this on my portable record player as a 13 yr old in 1973, over & over again. This was the bomb back then, still is. Man, tripping me out on the memories guys! Nice 💜
In the summer of '73, this played at the local swimming hole at least once an hour all summer long. It forever altered by 12 year old mind.
Yes, Edgar and Johnny Winter are brothers. Two albino brothers from Texas with crazy musical talent. Please also check out Johnny Winter's performance at Woodstock.
Damn I had no idea that was Rick Derringer! And unbelievable guitar player on his own wow
I listen to this band when I was a teenager loves their instrumental
Dan Hartman, the bass player, later on in 1985, co-wrote and produced "Living in the USA" for James Brown. It was a hit!!!
Saw Edgar in 1987 and he was unbelievable!
I've see Edgar live in Detroit .. always a great performancer.
What a pleasure to see others enjoying the Master Wizard of Electronic Wizardry and his band of leaping gnomes.
I saw jonnywinter live in person
Up close ...it changed my life.
Leland, MS boys....alot of wonderful musicians from the Mississippi Delta.
I remember being six years old and staying awake till around 12am when I watched this performance.
I remember trippin’ off the modulator instrument for years beyond that.
