I remember the 1982 package being a real shock to the system when it launched, it was SO different to anything that had come before. We were all talking about it at school, and I really missed the 1976 traffic news jingle (particularly as the original mix of the 1982 version was somewhat insipid). However, with the benefit of hindsight, the 1982 package was absolutely right for the time, and now is one of my favourites. Thanks for posting this.
Wow. I can't believe I have found this again. I used to listen to the Friday Rock Show with Tommy Vance 35 years ago. I would fall asleep listening to it and my radio would be still on overnight. This opening music would kick in the following morning and wake me up. Fantastic that I have found it again.
You would have heard the midnight news summary, the first jingle in this package, then an off air test tone followed by transmitter power reduction and switch off with interference all night till the 1053kHz / 1089kHz transmitters come back on around 5.40am with reduced power with the 440 Hz test tone then full power at 5.45am and from 5.50am test tone beeps and silence up to the Radio 1 jingle montage at 5.55am
This is great. This was a very inspiring thing to do....Who would have guessed this would be RUclips gold to listen to 37 years later. Thanks for uploading. I have a few Radio 1 recordings myself. Madonna blonde ambition tour live from Wembley Stadium 21-7-1990 broadcast by R1 (when she swore like a trooper) Madonna interviewed by the delightful Jackie Brambles...Simon Bates, May bank holiday monday 1990 Non Stop No 1s/31 days in May ( when the little girl who won Madonna's bustier actually should not have won it, as a previous caller got all the answers correct). And the 1000th edition of TOTP broadcast in stereo, from R1 on the 5/5/1983 seamingly a rare one to have.
That first jingle in the start-up sequence 'Radio 1 National Radio' was used before closedown and transmitter switch off after the midnight news summary had ended.
I remember waking up at 5.50am on a Saturday morning to record this. I wish I still had the tape. Wonderful jingles and a great station I loved in my teens. 😀
Can’t believe that the BBC had the nerve to not give their pop music network nationwide FM coverage - they recorded all those jingles in stereo and play them out on an appalling AM distribution system which, as one-time programme controller Johnny Beerling said in an interview, didn’t do justice to today’s music!
My 1983 alarm call - how that has just taken me back 41 years❤❤

Always loved that instrumental track that comes straight after the opening jingle!!
Me too Lance. I remember it from 35 years ago. I am so happy to hear it again.

I've been waiting thirty two years to hear this again :o) The later ones just didn't do it for me.

At 5.50 you would've heard test tone beeps, at 5.55 this started.
@@anthonyperkins7556 Exactly remember the beeps beforehand waiting until it started so I could record it.
I've heard the bed at 1'48" used in the Steve Wright Show on occasions, but a much longer version which he would talk over.

That one at 2:46 sounds like the Doobie Brothers What a fool believes
Who wrote that opening piece of music? Just curious.
JAM Creative Productions, Incorporated Who else?!
Most of the jingles are from the Music Now package which was done by JAM Creative.
