This IS original packaging. The dome Tweeters and midranges come in a cardboard box with a foam plastic container with some 12 tweeters or maybe 6 or 8 midranges.
I’m really enjoying your videos and the commentary you provide . Your channel should have at least 100 x more subscribers than it has . Your channel is one of the best kept secrets on RUclips . Not a good thing lol
MDM-55's are packed 12 or 16 to a package (maybe even 24?), not individually. It's been 14 years since I ordered my MDM 55s in bulk so I forget exactly. They cut the tray for smaller orders, so you have original packing. Don't worry about the sticker, if you are put gaffers tape or duct tape around the whole can. Have fun, I have an active setup MDM55, MDT-39 and SEAS Excel 18cm. Digmoda DSP and 3886 based amplification. It takes very elite loudspeakers to better this system now almost 12 years old. Still making them for acquaintances who hear my brother's surround system. Great videos!
Jurmalafi Xo Thanks! I would have thought they would have individual packaging but wasnt sure. Also, I use a dealer account with Solen so thought maybe I didnt quite get the same treatment as a regular customer. In any case I appreciate the clarification. Good to hear the feedback on your positive experience with the Morel too.
I always wondered about that dome midrange. I kept thinking the same thing you did. At that price, the spec sheet really didn't interest me enough to ever spring for it. Thanks for the review. I look forward to seeing what you think of it when you put it in a final project.
You cant miss with Morel drivers. They are almost Dynaudio drivers coz Dynaudio is making some parts for Morel also (dome motors, hexacoils etc) :) Cheers
I am surprised you didnt work with Morel before. Morel is by far very simmilar to Dynaudio by characteristic and though they produce drivers in the house i think they still use Dynaudio motor assembly for some high cost drivers. I work mostly with Dynaudio drivers and even if there are "better" drivers out there i am real dynaudio fan :) and dont care for the rest. I am preparing three way closed box project based on Dynaudio 30w54 woffer, D52AF midrange and D28/2 tweeter. Cheers mate
Hi Ryan, tnx for the video. Dayton RS52 alu dome is another good looking dome mid, but has larger chassis diameter. However, most mid domes suffer from rocking modes and according to some sources they are detectable - ATC mid has special double suspension to prevent it, but $$$😰. MB Quart produced 1.5" titanium long time ago, but Fs was much higher if I memory serves me well - quite OK driver. I have large dip in my car around 550-750Hz, with midbass mounted in lower front part of the doors, hence my interest in some mid domes to do a 3way. Let see how it battles against the Scan - with it's limits of course. Keep us posted👍
That dip is probably from the reflected wave off the transmission tunnel cancelling out those frequencies. Had the same issue in my car and was thinking about going 3 way or using a full range in place of tweeter. Ended up using a DDRC24 and it fixed the phase issue and now there's no more dip.
Well it does do something remarkable... transient response, blows away anything in it's price class or even above it. That's a function of using a "dome" structure... same thing in non-reinforced cathedral roofs, strongest form for a given material.
wcg66 well they were on loan from a friend. I ordered them for his project and he let me try them in case I wanted to order myself a pair. I will use the Morel with a single Motus and the Fountek ribbon. Then I will do an ultimate project with the Viawave ribbons and two Motus woofers. Possibly the scan 15M or try another mid of some kind just for fun.
bought 2 and one was defective out of the box, found forums with them failing also. These are lottery speakers. What are the chances of having a bad unit really? There is something wrong with them. I am experienced and a comfortable crossover well within range. Returning
I thought the same thing when i saw them.. If you go to madisound.com they have all the morel speakers,,a really nice one is there titanium supreme,,,they are 500 organelle but are on sale now for 344,,it goes from 40 to 4000,,and another one goes from 40 to 12000 hz bad ass speakers.
Hmm, ya I might not have made a video but I did build a 3 way using a fountek ribbon tweeter and I think a Dayton RS180 woofer. They were pretty sweet speakers, but I only built test enclosures and when my house renovation started I basically disassembled them and moved on.
wonder if a a cap sim cud be configured to work by dragging your desired curves on the right side, and watch the left schematic populate with crossover parts.... cool idea.
I spent some time with DIY Morel and Audax projects. Audax aerogel wasn't my cup of tea (too soft). The Morel was much better, but not on par with Scan speak, SB acoustics or Seas.
I like very much your videos, well made my friend, very technical reviews, honest and understandable. nice videos. would you make a video about generic speakers, those from china without t/s parameters, and make something great (as usual) for us? from search and purchase, measuring tests and the final build (a 3 way speaker for ex.) i will appreciate that, it will be a VERY, very interesting video. thank you!
I also had Braun speakers from the 70s that had dome mids. I eventually noticed their diaphragm was touching the metal front grill and became stuck to it. The engineer somehow failed to leave enough space between baffle and grill for the midranges. Very crappy speakers if you ask me
Hello Ryan! Excellent video as usual. Bro I need a help with something I don't understand yet I sure you can explain very well. When I download the FRD archive - let's say for instance The dayton woofer ST210-, It has for types of FRD with a number that is different. For instance: ST210-8@0.frd them, it changees; ST210-8@15.frd, ST210-8@30.FRD and last one is @40.frd. When I load everyone of this to the xsim program, the curve changes affecting the values of the components. What exactly do they mean and what is the right choice? Thanks again Ryan and waiting with anxiety the 3-way video crossover design.
Joseph Anselmo im pretty sure that 0 15 30 and 40 degrees off axis. Use the 0 curve for your design. That is typically the listening axis. The other curves can be loaded to check that the off axis response is smooth and consistent.
Yes I have. I used a ribbon tweeter and an 8” woofer. Worked super well. Great speaker. But I never built a finished nice pair because I didn’t need them and my renovation had to start. So I sadly disassembled them. I have done some design for others but generally don’t bother. It’s a lot of work and rather design and build speakers that I like at my own pace.
cncgeneral I always give the drivers some time with a sine wave at a minimum, but that really isn’t all that much break in. For a small dome mid like this in a sealed chamber it’s unlikely to drop much of any. But I’ll check it now that it’s been run for a while.
Hi i have a question about the spectrum at 5:54. Do you mean that this is a very good performance ? do you have experience of midrange cone/dome with an even better performance ? i have the feeling that this is a very important test. I remember the old Infinity Emim drivers having a superb and amazingly clean spectrum. www.cieri.net/Documenti/Cataloghi/Infinity/Infinity%20-%20IRS%20Epsilon%20-%20Depliant.pdf (see on page 9 - they call it waterfall response shot) Could they have been some of the best midrange drivers ever made ? there is almost no ringing to speak of ... I am obsessed with midrange performances because i am looking for the best reproduction possible of human voice.
Could you give us a top 3 tweeters, and top 3 woofers video any why they are your personal faves? (Might have to make top 3 mid woofer and top 3 low woofer to really get the whole spectrum). Thanks!
Alawatakima i like that idea actually. I have a build Im working on right (video should be up later this weekend) but I'll try to do something like that.
NewClassic sorry I’m not sure I understand the question. If you’re wondering about the sound quality I do have another video of it being used in a 3 way that describes the sound a little more. I don’t think it has a thick or drenched sound but I’m not sure what those words mean in terms of sound quality.
charlie Turner I haven’t really used many Morel products at all. They all tend to do quite well, but the price matches the performance. So although high performing, value is only middle of the pack. If you like what they offer they will meet your expectations.
Thanks! Good answer, as in most all cases, you get what you pay for, but, what did you really want to start with. Figure out where you really want to go before choosing what the path is to get there. Oh, and by the way, how thick is your wallet. :D @@ImpulseAudioSpeakers
love your videos. im considering building a pair of speakers using a morel 2 inch dome and 1 inch tweeter that is mounted in a 5 inch round plate. I would like your recommendation for a woofer. High inductance usually = no copper shorting ring in the motor = higher distortion

3 decibels is half power? so 1db is quite a variance?
Well, audibly it’s not a huge difference, but it can be audible if it’s over a wide range. I wouldn’t worry about 1db most of the time.
As far as CAR audio, I've simply heard Hertz and CDT wallow all over morel too many times. Morel quality doesn't correlate to morel pricing.
