I listened to Roger on public radio today. He made me realize that although we were raised in England Liverpool and I grew up in Birmingham also in the 80's. But unlike Roger my perception of America changed once living here. My original expectations of everything was possible came to a crashing end very quickly. I came in 2006 and stayed because my mother left England in the late 80's, she too wanted better weather and saw Florida as paradise. My experience was far from paradise. I found the system to be ruthless, racist structures, medical system unfair. Many people who looked like me, were working in low paying jobs with gruelling hours and almost no holiday's. My second job I saw a woman who appeared to be within days of giving birth, I was shocked and she told me her baby was due that week. I asked her why was she still at work, she told me because she wouldn't have any money for her rent if she didn't work up to the last day of giving birth. So as I listened to Roger, I felt a little jealous that he had such a great experience as opposed to ex Brits who are Black.

I was actually surprised (as I mentioned in the interview) that his experience was so "sunshine and rainbows."
Honestly, I find it kind of hard to believe that there was no culture shock at all, and that he found everything to be exactly as expected, but I suppose people are all different, and we experience things in different ways.
I'm sorry that you encountered the opposition that you did - unfortunately, your story is not found in isolation, but is what many people find when they come to our country. Hopefully the USA can become more like Roger Bennett's 1980's understanding of the USA. Truly a place for freedom and unity.

@@SchaeferFamilyAdventure I guess his race gave him an advantage over people like me. I have a few friends who had similar experience to mine and they too are Black. We all watched a sanitized view of America on the news, bolstered by un realistic soaps like Dynasty and Dallas. I thought racism was long gone. How wrong we were.😢
