I just ordered the amazon battery for cheap since the Ryobi batteries have been failing and not the knock offs for me. I keep them in air conditioned space to keep the batteries healthy.

Glad that you pointed out the Safety factor. This is No Joke when dealing with Lithium batteries !!! ⚠️ ☝️🤨
Would also point out that the Ryobi HP batteries have optimized construction and diagnostic, and feedback circuitry for longer duty cycle, higher performance, life span, and overall Reliability ! 😃👍
I think most folks would agree that your "HOUSE" is more reliable when it doesn't burn to the ground... 😒

The knock off has a bms and is perfectly safe, the difference is in the cells that are used and where they come from. The knock offs i have bought have all lasted just as long as genuine batteries, the main thing is to take the batteries off the charger when charged, leave them a little discharged when not using and store them indoors if possible. These are all the basics of lithium and the bms does protect them from over charge/discharge, but the charger will keep cycling b/c there is no relay built in to cut the connection from charger to battery. This can be seen in the winter when battery loses some capacity to colder weather and charger will try to keep topping it off, constantly charger a little for a long time until you go to use the tool and the battery is dead. Just pull it off charger and store inside when not in use;).

I bought a knock off 40 volt 6ah from Amazon 2 months ago for about $72
I use it In my ryobi lawnmower.now it doesn't last as long as my ryobi battery
    But I'm happy with it.
It's basically you get what you pay for!

Can anyone tell me if the knock off battery charges in the most recent Ryobi chargers well? I have an OP406 charger that came with my 21" self-propelled Brushless mower. So many options online and I just can't quite find the right review to give me the answer I'm looking for.

The test is far from represent all aspects of requirements from battery.you should have tested it under large amount of current demand for a long time, like a lawn mower motor under load, to see that the batteries can provide that amount of current and check how it handles the heat.
But from your results I see that the real Ryobi battery have only 13% more capacity than the cheap one, but Ryobi battery cost 333% more than the cheap !
The cheap battery is MUCH MORE COST EFFECTIVE !

Have you run the cheapo version in your lawn mower and trekked it? The reason it’s interesting is it might actually fit in the gen one mower which has the side by side battery caddy.

As of 9/22 there are at least 6 knock-off brands on Amazon. Could you, or somebody here note what brand of Battery you tested. (seems basic).

There are many companies making these knock off batteries. You can buy the shell, circuit board and build one yourself if you want. Some of the very lower tier are built from very old cells that still hold a charge for now and the wiring and solder joints is bare minimum to make it work. If you go for a upper tier of these you get thicker wiring, better solder joints and although not name brand cells they are new. I've had both a Ryobi and a Knock off get somewhat discharged and would not work with a charger and both revived fine with a little coaxing. If I decide to get one I get it from this one outfit that has made laptop replacement batteries for decades.

Mate, they all have the same protections built in, its not like a Chinese factory is not going to put similar BMS on them. BMS are cheap (just look at the ali express). The difference in size is due to the fact that the larger HP battery from Ryobi uses more cells, there is an extra layer of these. The smaller 6AH will use 3000mAh cells, these may not be as high quality as the LG or Samsung, and hence the real battery capacity is probably around 5AH. Hence why you are seeing the difference in run times.

im sure the knock off has a bms. you can open it and find out. also you can charge it. if a bms was not inside the charger it should keep charging the battery even at 100% the off brands save money on battery quality and circuit board components and no warranty. the ryobi cost more because of components and a 3 year warranty.

How old is your original Ryobi battery? They do lose capacity over time of course so that Ryobi could be way lower than 100% depending on age and use.

Grabbed the power station and a 300w inverter with 5, 6ah batteries. I was looking at these knockoffs on Amazon for the price, but was worried about it having any kind of protections built in. Anybody had luck (or been unlucky) with these knockoffs?

I bought the knock-offs for my Ryobi lawnmower thinking they would do the same job ...they don't. They're performance sucked and died in the high grass. They might be OK for tools with lower power requirements but when it comes to lawnmowers, I've learned you can't be cheap.

I'll vouch for that I have the battery on the right. There is no safeties. It ran all the way dead on the first use. I think there's a thermistor in it because of the plus-minus terminal 4 if it overheats

ryobi owes you a left nut. anyway, stocks of ryobi 40v batteries are scarce as of this writing plus overpriced. EGO and others have better pricing. Makita tools such as handheld blowers are nicer and the dual battery 36v tools feel like a corvette vs. an ox cart. i have plenty ryobi and other brands and thanks to ryobi as I give my unskilled workers the ryobi tools to break vs more expensive brands. Thanks for the vid! Typically if AH is claimed the same, the oem batteries out perform the knock offs every time in any brand. What I do see is that the aftermarket will sometimes offer 9ah, or even 12ah batteries which oem's dont always have and then the aftermarket outperform solely out of having larger battery packs. I wish we could get the 12ah ryobi 40V batteries they have been unavailable for months.

I do not recommend those non OEM battery for high power tools like lawn mower.
Those cells in the non-OEM battery have much less maximum discharge current rating and could cause fire.
If you are looking for cheaper alternatives then try used OEM ones on eBay. I bought 2 of them for less than $70.

Now compare 4 of the knock off for the price of 1 ryobi, it'll run 4x as long for the same price as 1 ryobi battery after taxes.

Just want to say, the ryobi oem batteries are garbage. If I have to throw the knock off batteries, I expect that. I have had an very high failure rate on the OEM batteries and chargers. Ryobi won't do anything about it so I buy the knock offs. It works out better money wise for me.

@@livefreeandtoolon I think maybe the issue is they make so many different batteries that even the guy I talk to at home depot who uses these products wasn't really able to tell me the difference between them, except for their size. maybe that's something that can be added to your videos? The whole subject is difficult there are many different manufacturers of generic batteries. Almost all the videos that I've seen so far showed the generics to work really well, but maybe that's not the same one as yours. it's not an easy thing. I've seen them disassembled and the generic was definitely cheaper than the factory one. I think the real issue is how many cycles they can go go through? I don't know how you test that without spending hours and hours and days? I liked your video it seemed very genuine. One last issue is it for me, the guy who does a project here and there or are you a professional who's using it all the time. another issue that's hard to say? I guess I'd really be interested in a more indepth video. Something that drills down into the actual battery and its life, not an easy thing!
