  • My second attempt at making a cross drilling attachment for my vintage Karger lathe. I really need this to work so I can continue with the collet chuck backing plate video.
    I am trying to make a little money for my youtube hobby, through the Banggood affiliates program. Follow the link below, buy something you NEED and I'll earn some commission. Doesn’t cost you anything extra, and you're basically saving money out of Banggood's hands :)

    I enjoy a good 'state of the channel address' such as you give. The thing that makes a channel worth watching (at least to me), and the channels that I feel are most beloved is when/where people are simply themselves. You are the best and only person I have ever seen be you.. and I think it's working. So onward into the new year! :)

    Keep on posting you inspire me to try things I have needed to do for years. I've had my little Atlas lathe for about 50 years and it has served me well. Now with the internet and especially all these YT channels I've gotten a little more educated on procedures. My Dad was a machinist for a large Oil Well tool company for 43 years and he taught me the basics, but times have really changed since then. I don't have much material to work with but I see now that it is possible to do some useful things with my scrap collection.

    Try to use Bronze , make Bronze bushing on both sides and that should solve you issue , with a little bigger tolerance . When it will be turning , will grow a little and will be tight . Bronze will keep it running . :)

      I don't have any bronze. I've got plenty of brass but apparently that's no good.
      But I'm planning to install some needle bearings. Those are small and will fit the same holder.

    Keep on turning buddy. Lessons learned for all of us. Metal on metal tends to gall and any imperfections between like metals will cause ceasing. Try a softer metal for bushing or bearings. Problem solved. The other issue I notices what not going all the way through with your reamer. Can sometimes leave a slight taper if you don't go at least over the halfway point of the reamer on the way in and out.

    I agree bronze bushings would be a good idea, you should add small oiler holes and oilers to keep the bronze or oilite bushings lubricated, good tools take time to make so take your time it looks something like a watchmakers drilling attachment with a small pulley on one end. Making the spindle from tool steel hardening and tempering it afterwards would probably me a good idea. I think your spindle housing is a good solid design you have a good tool in mind and I will certainly make one for myself one day , look forward to more videos Bravo!.

    I don't know what you ordered for bearings. I do know that the time for delivery can be a huge problem for spontaneity. I have waited for months for many and forgot why I ordered...the project already dead or stored away in a half assed state (DIY electronics and such)
    Wishing you the best for the coming year!

      I've bought some cam shaft needle bearings from Banggood. They are tiny and will fit the same holder.
      But you are right, it will take a lot of time before they get here, I might have moved on to other projects by then :)

  • @theThinkerator

    I like DIY
    I wonder if you would have had better success if you used the cross slide to advance the drill
    this way, you could polish up the bar/holder and you would have a better chance at mating them.
    a single bearing surface I think works better than a sliding surface, as you have far more torque etc to cause friction
    polish the bar and the holder just where they mesh, and put stop collars on the bar so it can't move.
    you'll use less oil for lube and retain the surface of the bearing area

      You're right I did learn a few things, and I can still salvage the part by putting in some bearings.

  • @johnnywayne7654

    I could hear the drills screaming, 'gimme a drink, dad!' ..... Or wait, maybe that was my 4 year old, or maybe both...
    Really a big bummer on the cross drilling attachment. If you asked my opinion I'd recommend some bearing bronze (660 brass) sleeves/bushings in the clamped piece. Most seen to insist 'oilite' (SAE 841) in that circumstance, but it's lubricity is comparable to bearing bronze and cost so much more. Also seems a bush or sleeve would work alot better as galling is extremely easy when using similar metals and or steel aluminum. Just my opinion, take it or leave it.
    Glad to hear the new year will be coming without much change, love your channel, projects, commentary and all that good stuff. Thanks for sharing with us mate!

    • @Rolingmetal
      @Rolingmetal  5 лет назад

      I think it must be the material cause I used quite a bit of oil.
      I've ordered some needle bearing and I'm hoping those will save the project.
      But I probably need to make some sort of thrust bearing out of some yellow metal.
      Hopefully brass will work because I don't think I have any bronze.

    Another try and something learnt I hope. Mate I hope for your sake they turn up before you have another go but what I can’t understand is (unless you edited it out) how did the shaft expand so early, it only turned for 5 seconds, with oil I wouldn’t have expected the shaft to expand that quick. Thanks for your talk at the end your advertising dollar kicked in exactly as you said it, can you time it? All the best for 2019. Peter

    • @Rolingmetal
      @Rolingmetal  5 лет назад

      Nothing was edited out It was over in a matter of seconds. Very surprising considering it was well oiled and not running at extremely high RPM. Electric drills don't go very fast at full speed.
      Yes it's possible to exactly time the advertising slot. But a lot of the time google won't show an ad.

      @Rolingmetal  5 лет назад

      I've checked on my work computer that has a 24" 16:10 screen. It also displays 1600x901 images. That is still pretty far of the original image size but a lot better then 640x360. I guess at some point I have to start thinking about a upgrade.

      I wonder if people think it's safe to work with a complete loss of dexterity due to the cold.
      Besides that, a lathe isn't a bench grinder. If you're incautiously putting your hands close enough to be caught by anything, you're already doing something wrong.
      If you're not willing to accept that remote risk, you might want to consider removing the rest of your clothes as well. Surely that will eliminate all possibility of injury. Better safe than sorry; after all, you can't be hurt by something that's not mentioned in the shop safety rules you had to memorize in high school.

    Bummer about the VFD and the latest attempt with the cross drilling attachment. Not really a surprise that aluminium - aluminium does not work well.
    You mentioned ordering bearings but did not mention if ball bearing or sintered bronze. I think for this application sintered bronze would work well and be inexpensive. A link to illustrate.

      A couple of plain bearings made from a bit of brass rod would have done the trick but roller bearings will be interesting :)
      Cast Iron for a bearing material would have also been OK. Obviously bronze is great too.
      One guy here was talking about modern lathe beds being steel on steel but in fact one of them is probably cast iron and the steel side is probably hardened.

    • @EddieTheGrouch
      @EddieTheGrouch 5 лет назад

      No smell could be a good thing. A full diaper can be nasty. As for the controller, the drivers can fail quietly. I'm assuming the lack of cooling was the issue so the parts needing cooling are the likely culprit. If you are adventurous, broke, or just a tightwad like me and have a test meter and a soldering iron I'm willing to help. Maybe do some troubleshooting via a video call or something. I keep a small box of replacement drivers because some days the Gods just don't like me. One week I had 4 controllers fry repeatedly. I must have replaced 20 parts and then the sun spots or whatever faded and no more trouble (so far).
