Tofu is legit amazing when prepared well (like anything). Freezing it in the package then thawing it (and then freezing it again) results in a chewier/"meatier" texture, and now I'm hooked. I like to squeeze the tofu between two plates over the sink. Also, you can bake these strips at 400*F for 25 minutes, flipping half way through for an equally crispy outside. No oil needed.
Thanks for the information, I've just recently started using tofu and my body loves it, I was frying it in coconut oil, but I can put it in the oven and that'll make it crisp also? I've gotta try that. Thanks
I made a contraption from two bamboo cutting boards, 4 long bolts, 4 wing nuts and 8 washers. Drill four holes in each cutting board so that they line up. Put a washer on the bolt, put bolt through both boards, add another washer and the wing nut. Super easy. Then all you do is put the tofu between the two boards, screw the wing nuts down and the water just gushes out. Gotta be careful not to screw them down in an uneven way. Or screw it down to far that you crush it.
I used to press out the water, but now I don’t bother after watching korean & chinese youtubers using it without the excess pressing. Only time I squeeze is when I put in the freezer. I used to absolutely hate the texture of tofu, but now I enjoy the texture of it both cooked & cooked after freezing.
Just made this with my partner for our Valentine’s day dinner and it turned out SO well. And it’s pretty easy to make! So glad I found this recipe, the corn starch trick made it super crispy. So satisfying! Thank you for posting this :)
This looks delicious! We didn't have teriyaki sauce so we used soy sauce, mushroom sauce (can also use vegeterian oyster sauce) and a bit if sugar. We let it reduce over medium heat. Tasted really good.
This looks yummy. Today I'll try tofu for the first time. I previously saw a recipe where the chef baked it. I might have to try it this way as well. Thanks for sharing.
Good afternoon, Terada-san! Thank you for another great recipe! My whole life I ate fried tofu with soy sauce, scallions and a bit of hot sauce and I can see now what I've been missing all that time! Thank you!
I've been eating Tofu for 40 years. I like it silk'n and any possible way even though it has no taste. This recipe is extraordinary. I like to dip it in rice flour again and fry it twice. Just experimental. Well done
I've been searching for the best Tofu recipe and after watching about 10 other recipes, I think this one is the best.. I'd definitely try this..looks so yummy & presentation wise looks great too!
I made this today, I made Teriyaki sauce from scratch because I did not have any on hand. I also didn't have saki so I substituted white wine & it still came out spectacular. Thank You Chef this will be a regular in my home.!!!!
Yeah...I just made this and it is INCREDIBLE. I added a bit of sriracha mayo on top and it was like the best deep fried sushi, but tofu. So so so good. Make it, you won't regret it.
I love how you added words to the video for the ingredients! TY!!! Will we ever get to see the camera guy?!?!? It would be so fun to watch him make a sushi roll!
Ah! Tofu the top favourite dish in my list. Eating is a necessity but cooking is an art. Nothing brings people like good food. No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing. Today, I have seen how good food is made and am blessed by it. Thank you for sharing your secret ingredient in one heaping teaspoon of generosity. To me a meal without Tofu is not a meal! A healthy outside starts from the inside. Love the easy to cook recipe and simply delicious...ichiban! 👍Thank you to my sweet angel for uploading !
OMG, I'm dying here! Tofu is my favorite food in the world, no joke here. Sooooo making this tonight, thank you so much for sharing this preciousness!😋❤️
Vandie Kosik hello there! Yes, as chef Hiro was saying tofu tastes pretty neutral like, you can’t have a bite on a chinchilla of tofu cuz it tastes pretty blend but... it will absorb any flavors very easily, I use tofu instead of meats and it works very well every time! Cheers! ✌🏼🌱
Thank you for responding. I bought some tofu yesterday along with the other ingredients and I will be making this. Maybe tofu will become my new addiction. 😁
Thank you! I've tried doing deep fried tofu dishes before but they're always slightly below par. This was actually perfect, lively and crispy with a great sauce, I've saved your video to my vegan cooking favourites and it was stonking! (British slang for absolutely fantastic). I will check out your other videos when I recover from my delicious food coma 🙂
I don't have the cooking experience nor the life experience as this chef. Much respect is given to him that's for sure. I've found recently that if you press the tofu as much as you can, then let it sit in a container in the fridge on paper towels for 48-72 hours... it's a GAME CHANGER for tofu. It's dried out some and even when you rehydrate it I've found it just retains the marinade really well and is super chewy like chicken... if that's your thing. Trust me... you're gonna love it.
it looks tasty that's for sure! Hiro-san you inspire me every time I watch your videos to become a better cook and try more Asian cuisine thank you, and thank you cameraman you are very good at presenting his food and techniques.
I've made a similar version of this. Deep fry'd the tofu but did not pour sauce over it, because then it made it not crunchy anymore... but put a dipping sauce for each person. But Hiro you are awesome. Watch you all the time and have gotten many new recipes from you. Keep it up Bro.

Also tofu soaks up most of the taste making it (unless you soak it in another soup sauce etc.) a almost tasteless piece, well not tasteless but you don't notice a flavour difference
I make tofu for dinner once or twice a week - this is a welcome addition to my list of tofu recipes! But can you tell me what's in your homemade teriyaki sauce? Thanks!
My default "teriyaki sauce" is soy sauce, brown sugar, a little lemon or lime juice, some mirin, a lot of ginger, hot pepper, and a little sesame oil. I still want to know Hiro's recipe!
I made this for meal prepping this week. It came out wonderfully! I keep asking people to try it and then tell them it's tofu and their reaction is great. I fried the breaded tofu in a thin layer of oil rather than deep frying so the breading got stuck and came off in a lot of cases. Delicious meal I will definitely make in the future.
Tofu is great. It has so many variation of incorporating as an ingredients or just by itself, ranging from kimchi soondubu jjigae (Soft Tofu Stew) from Korea, mapo tofu from Sichuan province, China, tofu with scramble eggs, tofu and mushroom miso soup, tofu lentil salad, garlic-chilli tofu burger, and hundreds of more. I personally love it. And soybean product in general has high protein with antioxidant.
Frank Valentine Do you mean you are omnivore? Eating animals doesn't mean you can't eat plants. I don't understand what does that has to do with anything.

Made this tofu-dish at home, turned out amazing. Everyone loved it! Thank you, Mr. Terada.
Fred Spencer how u make the sambal?

Corn starch is best for crispy tofu. Potato starch just goes soggy in a minute or two.
I agree.
Hmmm interesting thanks for that info
Try to mix corn starch and all purpose flour
I prefer cornstarch only

I think Hiro's hands forged the volcano.
King yes, Mount Fuji.
SilentOne Mt. Fuji is a mountain, not a volcano. As far as I know but I could be mistaken
Actually, Fuji *is* a volcano - look it up in Wikipedia :-)
Wikipedia isn't a reliable source- anyone can change things in those passages. That's why a lot of schools ask students not to use it

Mike West Usually you'd use "raw" tofu in soup.
I had it several times in a restaurant I frequent so I don't know if it was raw or not. I have not made any tofu dishes myself yet.
Also tofu soaks up most of the taste making it (unless you soak it in another soup sauce etc.) a almost tasteless piece, well not tasteless but you don't notice a flavour difference
Mike West It's likely that you don't really like or have the pallet for tofu. Tofu is not for everyone.
Guess I'll find out when I try it.
