If you are paying less: you got a factory Blemish unit, which was upsold to you. I got the Unicorn for a hen's tooth, because nobody realized what it was at the time ... And the Godawful factory "Ranch" stock (truly, the worst Monte Carlo ever put on a rifle) may have hindered positive opinions. So, I got a straight stock, and suddenly it PRINTED. The old school shotgun-style stocks are NOT what you want on a rifle... Trust me. Found out by experience.
I've always wanted a mini14 but they're expensive. Over a grand here in Ohio. Unless you find a used one. The magazines are very expensive too. $50 per 30 round mag. Yikes!
First gun I ever "shot" too, I say that because I was maybe 3 and couldn't even hold it. I still remember pulling the trigger while my Dad held it. Got myself a mini-30 now.
It's a good gun. I would say it's a good starting gun. It was my first gun and I still own mine but I got mine with a heavy barrel to prevent the previous problem it had from the original model back in the 70's and 80's where after shooting many rounds through it, the barrel would become soft and cost accuracy. This was changed in the 2000's when ruger readressed this by leaving extra material on the barrel for models with serial 500 and later I believe.
Technically you can argue the mini-14s design is older though. Its just an evolution of a m1a or m14. Which is again an evolution of an m1 garand. The mini-14 is definitely a lot smaller then an M1 Garand and has a removable magazine instead of a clip but both are visibly and functionality similar. So the lineage goes back to atleast 1936 as a design. Technically the idea goes back to John Garand's M1919 design as it was the starting point. Meanwhile the AR family only goes back to 1955 with the prototype AR10. Even as a company you can only stretch the date to 1954. So that explains why the boomers are more comfortable with a mini-14. It looks like a normal rifle they grew up with even if the AR platform was around sense the 50's. Its stupid but people get set in there ways. I love my M1 Garand. But my AR-10 or AR-15s will be the rifle I grab if trouble came my way. Still the Garand is capable enough. Honestly a highly skilled guy with a Garand could defeat me with any modern rifle, which tells me I need to train more. Actually possibly even wit a solid bolt action. Really what matters is, is this individual rifle reliable, is it combat accurate in your hands. And do you have enough ammo to feed it for your purposes.
@@jacobmccandles1767 he's not a gun guy. He's 60 and set in his ways lol. Also not open to new information. Nah, it works cuz the Mini 14 was infinitely cheaper than the AR, and boomer Fudds loved it cuz it’s a Mini Garand. Not realizing it’s a vastly inferior rifle.
@@DocMitchell69 ar is cheaper. Wood stocks take twice as long to make and process than mild receivers. Also. The mini was more accurate. The big diff. Ars were know as handgernades because they were notorious for fouling and blowing up the gas port. That's why your so called inferior 14 had better range, reliability and accuracy. For a outdated design. That bolt is still used in modern sniper rifles.
@@Daniel-os9tb I’m talking back in the 70s and 80s. The Mini was farrrr cheaper than the AR. Talking like $400 for a Mini vs 1000 for the AR. Also, the Mini was never more accurate. Pre 580 series Mini’s are notorious for having mini of barn accuracy. Pencil thin barrels with over gassing and terrible stock to action fitment. Constant vertical stringing. And no one uses the M-14 or any variation for sniper rifles. Reason? The ones previously mentioned. You take apart a Match M-14, M21, etc and you’ll have to bed the action again and again. Plus, giant op rod slamming back and forth causes terrible barrel whip. Also also, shitty mounting options. There’s a reason why everyone’s switched to the AR and it’s variants for DMRs. Far better accuracy, allows for better mounting options for optics, free float barrels with no action bedding required, and vastly more reliable, not having a Grand Canyon size hole in the receiver and exposed locking lugs.
Minis are awesome. Love using them in 2 and 3 gun comps. Pisses off the spandex crew and tax return camandos. The ar is only more popular because its a more consumer friendly product.people like to buy stuff to stick on thier guns and that gets a bit tricky with a mini.
@@darrengarcia4937 i like the ar platform for some things, its a perfectly "viable" option, but the same can be said for just about any modern rifle. Personnally, i think the 5.56 round underutilizes what make the platform " superior" to any other.but that doesnt mean its a " bad" choice. Just that you dont really see any difference in results against any other rifle. But if you look at the ar 10, in 7.62... It all kind of makes sence. Claiming ANY gun is " better in every way" is just ignorant.we have reached an apex in firearms development most firearms are effectively the same. Creature comforts aside they all put rounds where they are pointed without much effort or expenditure of the user beyond basic fundamentals of marksmanship.
ARs have been around a lot longer than Mini 14s. I guess this guy must be a WW2 or Korean war vet if he's an AR guy. I'm just one of those young boomers who doesn't know any better and got the Ruger.
Back in 89 or 90 my dads best friend , who owned a gun shop, ordered 90 round magazines for these. I never saw my father smile and enjoy himself like I did when they were breaking those mags in.
I remember back in the 2009 days when AR’s were still kind of seen as futuristic (before you try to correct me how it’s an old platform I know. Stfu) and mini’s or M14 variants were all seen essentially in a tier of “holy crap you have a rifle that isn’t a bolt action!?” I’m glad the AR became a platform for all types even if some crazies have given em a bad name. Learning the rifle should be an essential.
Born in 1955, I am a Boomer... Bought in 1975, a 180 series Mini-14 was my first semi-auto centerfire rifle... Didn't get my first AR until about 1985. I though the mini was great and didn't really get the AR until I got the AR...
Having extensive experience with the AR platform via years in service, I can say for my personal taste I prefer the Mini 14 because it reminds me of my favorite rifle from my days as a Marine, the M14.
I have one and I can hit targets at 250 yards with iron sights and bought it back when prices were right so it's still a great rifle and yes I also have an AR-15
I got the mini 30 and its ok for a iron sight no frills firearm. Haven’t cleaned or oiled it ever! Had it for almost 30 years and it still fires and cycles like a champ when i shoot it occasionally
I got mine from Walmart for $700. I absolutely love it. My mags are only $25 for 20 rounds. I think its more maneuverable than a ar15. The only thing I dont like about it is it only likes ruger mags and gets hot after about 80 rounds.
If these weren’t so damn expensive, I’d have bought one years ago. I really like the M14-style of rifles, but .223 is a little more my speed than .308 for anything other than target shooting at stand-off range.
Started off with the Ruger 22 LR and as kids we learned to shoot before we were in kindergarten out in the Mohave desert. Lots of holes in them old rusted cans. Seems like the Mini-14 is practically the same size. I love that certain models like the Ranch Rifle can shoot both .223 and 5.56, only the Target model can’t. It would be great to complete the series with a stainless steel Mini-30. I am sure an AR-15 is probably more practical in a war situation but I am so used to using these Ruger rifles that they just feel like home. In CA you can’t purchase the tactical Mini-14 either, as most of us gun folks know that the gun laws don’t usually make a ton of sense. My concern is that eventually they might just make all guns that take a certain type of caliber of ammunition and make them all illegal or try to ban all guns across the board. The other irony to all of this is that you can purchase both black powder and high powered air rifles that are just as lethal as our modern firearms. In fact some of them even shoot full auto and some them can take down medium sized game such as large deer and hogs. What makes me wonder is where are these teenagers and you 20 something year olds getting the money for their assault rifles. It’s likely their parents out there giving them the money to purchase these expensive guns. I hold the shooters and their parents accountable for their actions. If your kid still lives with you and they do harm to others with a gun then you’re going to jail as well. Our first line of defense are the parents. I also believe that everyone beyond a certain age should learn how to safely shoot a rifle and hand gun. It’s a life skill that could become very important if and when we face another conflict on our soil. Based on human history it always does.
Talking to a Marine that served in Vietnam, right out of high school, he used a mini 14 through out his tour. He saw too many problems with the new plastic weapons.
I bought one of these in ranch rifle version in 1982 (yes I am a boomer) super reliable gun, I have fired hundreds of rounds through it with very few failures to feed. That being said I have never got it to shoot groups tighter that 3 inch’s @ 100 yards, I have tried almost every type of factory ammo and to many types of hand loads to count. I even tried bedding the action with no improvement. I have read we’re this common with the early models.
These would be fantastic, if they didnt raise the fucking price too the point that youre better off getting an AR of similar price

People really lucked out when Wal-Mart put those mini 14's on clearance. You could get them $300-$400. Of course, I weren't one of those lucky ones.
@@b.g.7381 that’s depressing. Wish I could’ve 😆
Great little video brother. Love my mini, had it since 2000
I love the mini! I've never had any issues. It is fully capable of hitting bowling pins at 100 yards 30 round mags. What more do you need?
The weapon of choice on "The A Team".
I used to want one of these solely because I thought it was cool. Could never justify the price, though...
Now, I bet you wish you picked one up back in the days when they cost $750 for a standard, or $865 for the Target Stainless model (which I bought 😋)
@@Karl_Kampfwagen im not paying 700 bucks for a ruger in the first place.
@@darrengarcia4937 Good luck on that Time Machine, bud
If you are paying less: you got a factory Blemish unit, which was upsold to you. I got the Unicorn for a hen's tooth, because nobody realized what it was at the time ... And the Godawful factory "Ranch" stock (truly, the worst Monte Carlo ever put on a rifle) may have hindered positive opinions. So, I got a straight stock, and suddenly it PRINTED. The old school shotgun-style stocks are NOT what you want on a rifle... Trust me. Found out by experience.
the hybrid of an AR15 and an M14 and is somehow NOT on Illinois weapon ban list.
Should have got one before their prices skyrocketed.
I've always wanted a mini14 but they're expensive. Over a grand here in Ohio. Unless you find a used one. The magazines are very expensive too. $50 per 30 round mag. Yikes!
JESUS... When did the price go up that much? I got mine in 2018 for about less than 600. Mags were 15 a box. In Dayton.
Yup, just bought on $960 after tax!
Mini 14 is a classic. Decent for open long range. The mini 30 up close in thick vegetation is like ray lewis on a untouched blitz.
I really want one but not for $1000
gun broker is your friend, just picked one up for 700 my buddy got one for 500
Yeah I would go for a used one in decent shape the new ones are really pricey. Which is weird because they used to be way cheaper than ARs
It's what the SKS is to the AK. If rails and ergonomics are not necessary, then you can enjoy this 5.56 in a nice American homegrown package.
Exactly
"Boomer"? Funny, since the AR-15 predated the Mini-14 by a decade or two.
Yeah, it did. But ask my dad which one he wants and which one he thinks is more reliable in adverse conditions......
@@Sheild_against_the_wicked556 it depends on if he's an actual gun guy, or just repeats old gun myths.
How old is he?
He the type of person that no one can tell anything to him, as he already knows it 🙄
Also doesn't not understand that the AR is more reliable due to being a closed off system. The M14 goes down really quick when it's dropped in the mud since the bolt is completely exposed.
FUD AR-15. Everyone who owns a mini 14 is obligated to buy a matching 1911
Or GP100 revolver

Lol! I Like it, it took something cool/scary, and made it kinda cute lmao. And we just love the garand and the PING!
Doesn’t work. The ar15 is almost ten years older. It’s technically the boomer gun. The mini14 should be the hippie gun. Call it the hippie boom stick.
No-one here knows what they are talking about.
@@DocMitchell69 yah, you didn't live in the 70s or 80s fud. Muchless serve.

Minis are awesome. Love using them in 2 and 3 gun comps. Pisses off the spandex crew and tax return camandos.
The ar is only more popular because its a more consumer friendly product.people like to buy stuff to stick on thier guns and that gets a bit tricky with a mini.
And its a better gun in every way but thats besides the point.
Using the word "boomer" is incredibly cringe
Especially because the vast majority of people online use it to describe people like 40-80 years old.
I finally was able purchase one 2 years ago love the gun .It is the perfect truck gun. Great video. 🇺🇸
Love that Gun ! Served my family well in the good ol 80s to 2014 here in the rag tag streets of Chicago .
Gen X who were young teens at the time of the A-team loved it. Me and all my friends bought Mini’s with our grass cutting money.
I prefer it. I like the paratrooper stock by ram line and a red dot , it's a beast. That's my apocalypse rifle
It’s loud as hell, but the action sound is so pleasing.
I love the mini-14 just as I do the SKS. They get to work without a lot of complications!
And when they get hot.... that barrel whip is INSANE
ARs have been around a lot longer than Mini 14s. I guess this guy must be a WW2 or Korean war vet if he's an AR guy. I'm just one of those young boomers who doesn't know any better and got the Ruger.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I’m 29 and I pick this up over my standard AR. It’s rugged, tough and reliable.
The mini 14 enjoys the same pleasures as their 10/22, you can do all sorts of stock swaps and modifications, and so many after market parts too.
Fun fact: the m1 garand is the precursor to the ak, Kalashnikov actually mentioned how he refrenced the m1 garands operation.
Beautiful weapon, glad you're comfortable laying it on bare flagstone.
Bro the corrections joke was amazing. I did corrections for 8 years.
Back in 89 or 90 my dads best friend , who owned a gun shop, ordered 90 round magazines for these. I never saw my father smile and enjoy himself like I did when they were breaking those mags in.
Thanks for making the video. Ah, the memories ...🇺🇸
.
👍
My Dad used to have one, except his had a Stainless Steel barrel.
I fired it many times, Great Rifle
Very accurate and reliable.
Mini 14 with the folding stock is no joke ! Great rifles
That's absolutely beautiful
This millennial loves the mini-14! My first 5.56 rifle I bought was a 187-series mini with the "paratrooper stock" like they used on the A-Team
Have owned one for my years. Have AR15 and like it also. The mini14 is my favorite.
First gun I bought when I turned 18, they're phenomenal rifles.
I had one when I was a teenager. Was good around the farm we had at the time.
They are also very reliable will run 223 & 556 without drama
I have a Marlin Camp 9 similar to this. Pretty awesome, underrated, under the radar firearm.
Looks like the 580 series, where they retooled their machines to make them and thickened the barrels. Love mine!
I own an old folding stock mini, LOVE IT (probably more than my AR)
Has the old thin barrel and only takes 223 as most old minis did.
I have one and I can hit targets at 250 yards with iron sights and bought it back when prices were right so it's still a great rifle and yes I also have an AR-15
The noise the bolt makes ❤
"reliable"...I think we all have different standards of what constitutes reliable. 🤣
Thank you Austin of the Vintage Warfare Channel!
I got the mini 30 and its ok for a iron sight no frills firearm.
Haven’t cleaned or oiled it ever! Had it for almost 30 years and it still fires and cycles like a champ when i shoot it occasionally
The Ruger mini-14 is a great platform rifle. Performs great as a ranch hand gun, home defense and for the zombie apocalypse.
I got mine from Walmart for $700. I absolutely love it. My mags are only $25 for 20 rounds. I think its more maneuverable than a ar15. The only thing I dont like about it is it only likes ruger mags and gets hot after about 80 rounds.
Just something about a Mini 14 that brings a plan together
You earned the like with the corrections joke 😂🤣
Yep! South Carolina still uses them in corrections. As well as the 38 specials...
Have one for the last 35 years. Will never get rid of it!
