Yes, you can. The BK-5 will mix the line-in signal into its own speakers, the headphone out and also into its line out, so you could connect a larger amp. If you use the build-in USB sound recorder, your synth will also be mixed in.
I had 4 years of music lessons on electronic keyboard as a teenager. I used a Yamaha PSR210. I did not play for a long time and for about a year I could not play at all because I had surgery on a finger. I am glad I can finally play again. I never played other instruments. Don't know when I will make the next video, the BK-5 is powerful, complex and takes time to master. I simply need to practice. But is is so much fun.
You can connect an external MP3 player to the BK-5 audio input. The signal will be mixed with whatever you play on the BK-5. In this case you can use backing band and if you use the sound recorder, it will also record the external signal. The "center cancel" feature which reduces the vocals can also be applied to the external signal. Don't know about BK-7m like modules by other manufactors.
IV BOUGHT THIS KEYBOARD ALREADY JUST RECENTLY AND HAVE USED IT LIVE. I FOUND NICE BEATS. IV UPLOADED MY VIDS. TNX 4 UR INFO, ROLAND SHOULD THANK U 4 MAKING ME BUY IT. ^^
I will do that sooner or later. But it will may take some time. But I can tell you there are very cool guitar sounds on the BK-5 ,esp. electric guitars. They have layered samples. That means they sound nice & clean if you play softly, but if you hit the keys harder they don't just get louder (like on a cheaper/older keyboard) but start to clang, overdrive or distort. Can be played very expressively. Lots of other sounds also have such layers, for eample pianos. Makes a huge difference IMHO.
Yes, you can do that. There is a "makeup tools" menu that lets you edit voice, mute and a lot of parameters like attack, decay, release, vibrato, chorus, reverb, eq settings, multi-dsp-effect for eacj track in the style. This creates a copy of the style that can be saved on the USB memory. You can also edit the patterns of the preset styles in the rythm composer (use them as a starting point for own creations).
The Nord is a synth that can simulate an electric organ (including the draw bars) , but also many other instruments, much more general purpose than the Hammond. You can modify sound much more than on BK-5, you can sample and create sounds from nothing. But the nord does not have "backing band" styles. So BK-5 is probably most "general purpose" of the 3, but what is "best" probably depends on what you want do. Only BK5 has internal speakers, Hammond SK1 & Nord 3 need external spk. + amplifier.
Hi Christian..just dropped by to say hello.... the 2012 Tour de France is getting a lot of TV coverage in the Amreica..and I know that you are into cycling. I even have a feeling that you took a vacation to see the actual tour de France races. Hope that you are enjoying your summer. tnx ed
Thank you. The BK-5 can record everything you play on it to a USB stick. This creates a 44.1KHz/16 Bit stereo WAV file. There is an option in the menu for the recording level. If this is to high, your recording may be badly distorted, so do test recordings to adjust. I put the WAV on an extra audio track in a video editor and muted the audio from the cam (which was much worse). It was not too difficult to get the WAV in sync with the video. I only used the cam audio for the voice comments.
Your review is good to understand the hardware/options vailable on BK-5.Easy to decide between Roland and Yamaha. BK-5 seems to be crispier in sound and clarity. Yamaha's S650/710/910 seems to lack this punch.
we hope that you will have another video clip to show more detail about how to making a song with multi- track recording & the communicate between RK-5 with Computer. Thanks
Christian...many thanks for your reply on Nord 3 and particularly the Guitar sounds on the BK-5.. very encouraging....cuz I do not to purchase the software for guitar sounds. Now, I have to put time on my piano accompaniment educ. and when I reach another level in 2 to 3 months, I will reward myself with Roland BK-5, Bk-7m... hoping that Roland will realize the confusion, and lower the price for BK-7m ... have a Happy Easter......... tnx again....ed
Thank you. This is "Coco Jumbo", it was a great hit during my youth when I learned to play. I had a cool music teacher who heard it, took an empty music sheet and just wrote it down for me.
Yes, but the names are different. I used to play on an old Yamaha and sometimes I had trouble to find suitable styles for songs I used to play with "standard" styles (8bt, 16bt, ballad, rock, disco) on the Yamaha. But in the end I always found something good. When looking for the right style it is worth the time to try all die 4 variations the styles have.
Thx! I have learned on PSR210 starting 1993. Later I had a Goldstar GS1000 (powerful, but electronics died). In 2003 I bought a Yamaha DGX200 (similar NPV-80 ?), but only played occasionally. After many years decided to get into music again so I checked out Yamaha PSR-S650 & Roland BK-5 in a store. Both have much better sounds & accomp than DGX200, I finally preferred BK-5 (feeling of keys, connections). Subjective feeling is much more important than specs on paper, always try b before you buy!
Sorry, it took some time to answer. Yes, you can restart a song. Just tried it with an mp3. You have to hold the intro / rewind button for 3 seconds and it will repeat the same song from the beginning.
But notice one spec: NPV-80 & DGX200 can play 32 notes at a time, sounds much, but it isn't. If you layer 2 sounds together and hit three keys and the last 3 keys are still fading out, that is 12 notes. That severely limits possibilities for acmp styles with drums and multiple instruments. The BK-5 has a polyphony of 128(!) notes, the same as a $5,000 Yamaha Tyros 4. So it can play dense acmp styles (built-in, user-loaded or user-created) that are simply not possible with more basic keyboards.
Christian you are very good player. You played and demonstrate very well. I really like Bk-5 sounds and styles just bcoz of your demonstration. Don't pay any attention to any unhealthy comments if someone doesn't like your performances or claim he is better than you. No body is perfect in music its a continuous learning process but one can achieve skills to master it. We all are learning music from the very first dive in musical ocean then we improve gradually as Learning phase never ends. 5***** for you demonstration and playing : )
The Juno DI is a synth. So probably more in depth sound editing, but no accomp. styles. The PSR S650 is comparable to the BK-5. There are some differences in specs (BK-5 has more connections while the Yamaha has a build-in sequencer). I tried both and liked the BK-5 a little bit more, but be sure to try both and check which has the sounds and styles you like, it is a matter of personal taste. Both are very good and comparable in quality IMHO.
Christian... could you play more 60s and 70s songs and using the guitar sounds? Nord Elec 3 has the 60s and 70s sounds and I like its sparkling piano sounds (a little more treble to it). I have a Roland CM-30 baby PA amp and I love it... the sound is so clean compared to the Roland Street cube. Rhe sales rep wanted me buy Street Cube, but I said let us play both speakers- and he agreed the CM-30 has a much cleaner sound. Can't wait for your other Bk-5 covers..... tnx ed
The BK-5 does not have a sequencer, so you need a computer to do such things. But it works with common music software both on Mac and Win easily via USB, I use a Mac with Logic Audio express. Keep in mind the USB PC connection will only transfer MIDI data, it is not an audio interface. Don't know when I can make new videos, because I was looking for new a job and a new apartment and I am going to relocate to Berlin in about two months.
Bravo Christian.... very nice first impression. Q1-you use the USB stick to import the song, did you cancel the vocal or lead so you can play your melody? Q2-how about the BK-5 backing band, do you need it when the USB song has its backing sounds? Another confusion in the U.S.... The BK-5 and BK-7m are priced the same by Roland below U$900. The BK-5 then is the first choice cuz you are getting a nice KB and backing band. My apppeal to Roland to please price the BK-7m below U$ 800. Tnx..Ed
You are a good KB player and very comfortable with the new BK-5 and you probably have another KB before BK-5... could you please share with us. For me, I have a farely new Yamaha NPV-80 (I am not happy with the auto accompaniment). This is the reason why I want a very good backing band KB. BK-5 is so new that the big chain stores are selling the pre orders and not have a unit as store demo. For U$900, I do not feel comfortable to get it without even smelling the paint. tnx....ed
Christian ... tnx for your in depth analysis... Before the BK-5 I have been looking at the Nord Elec 3 and Hammond SK1 (both around U$1,700 and 15 lbs..good for a 61 years old newbie KB player)... I play accompaniment for a very small choir and would also like to replay the 60s and 70s music. What do you think?...ed
AFAIK not. You can switch BK5 to local off mode in the MIDI menu. It will transmit MIDI data, it won't make any sound itself but still route the input. If your laptop crashes you can switch back to normal local on mode. I doubt you can do this quickly enough in a panic situation on stage. A more practical solution: Connect both BK5 and notebook to inputs of a mixer, maybe one of these cheap 2 channel DJ mixers. Can't use BK5 speakers of course, but I think they are too weak on stage anyway.
Christian... tnx for you BK-5 info.... please play some Shadows and Beatles music using the BK-5 features...... Also, I noticed that you like to walk your bass notes (like arppegio style).. I was wondering if you were a guitar player before the keyboard playing... tnx....ed
I have never played on EXR-3 so I cannot compare them. "On paper" Bk-5 has many more styles and each style has 4 variations (vs. 2 on EXR-3), more voices and a higher polyphony (128 vs. 64). But I don't know if the differences are enough to make an upgrade attractive.
What about selecting a patch and adjusting that patch so that there is no audio source being referenced? That way, I could just hit a button to select another patch in case of laptop crash. I'm just trying to have a simple setup with a reliable, quick back-up mode. Thanks!
Danke. Gruss Christian
very very informative tnx.... For hymns, I like to use the Organ-Strings, and you said the BK-5 backing band cannot be used also with MP3 playing.. then it limits my use. The auto acpm works with my Yamaha NPV-80 when playing organ-strings. However, it only plays midi not other music files. Do you know if Yamaha (or mftrs) make a backing band module like BK-7m?
Thank you. Q1: "Track mute" button during mp3/wav playback reduces the volume of the vocals, but not to zero. Also reduces quality (badly with some files). Maybe good to practice but not much more, I think. If you play a MIDI file you can mute each track you want. Q2: You don't have to use the backing at all. (piano / organ samples in my video have none). You cannot use backing while a mp3/wav is playing. Even more confusing, In Germany BK-7m is 899€ while BK-5 is 799€. Can't understand.
Thanks a lot for your video. I received recently the BK-5 and I would know if you can confirm that it's possible to download new sounds for the BK-5 (like 70's mellotron or 70's orgue) with the USB key. In this case, where can I find it on Internet ? (If you recommanded specifics websites). Thanks for any answer.
Is it possible to have external sound source coming through BK-5 without being controlled by the BK-5's volume? I would like to use it as a midi-controller while not hearing the BK-5 itself at times. That way, I can be doing a performance with my laptop-sourced sounds, routing them into the BK's 1/8" input jack and have it go through the BK-5, while BK-5 volume is set at zero. This way, when laptop crashes during a show, I can just quickly turn up BK volume to fill in.
Nice Tutorial, now, how do you get this clear audio from the BK-5?? Do you record directly to usb in audio or wav format?? Or is the audio coming from the Handycam?? Greetings from Brazil, Telmo.
Can you tell me if the USB player controls allow for restart of a song? I don't see it in the manual. I could see myself using backing tracks for learning and restarting a good amount. I only see stop/play but no restart/previous/forward buttons.
christian can you please tell me the name of that techno dance number you play, the one after fur elise. you play that killer and I need to play it like you. I think the bk 5 is a great buy for the money and has some killer sounds.
As far as I know you cannot load new sounds into the BK5. Several parameters can be edited and you can layer sounds, but you cannot use samples other than what is built-in.
kindly play some D-50 patches such as D-50 Fantasia, Fantasia 1,2, 3 and 4, Staccato Heaven, D50-Retour or any other D-50 patches. Also demonstrate Indian styles? Thanks in advance
Trigger Fingers... Since I started playing the keyboard and guitar, my two fingers are locking (particularly on the guitar). Sign of aging or too much computer also (carpal tunnel issue). I am wearing finger magnets to improve blood circulation and it helps reduce the swelling. It looks weird wearing 3 rings but if it works and let me play.... I will wear them.... I do not want surgery... maybe accupuncture if it gets worse..... what is the cure in Germany? tnx ed
Hm, very different instruments. Think of classic electromechanical "tonewheel" organs (Hammond B3 from1960s)? These had 9 "drawbars" (sliders to mix harmonic overtones). In theory you could mix millions of sounds, but only a few combinations were normally used. BK-5 has common hammond sounds as presets (I like them). The SK1 goes beyond that giving you actual drawbars like a real e-organ. Perfect for oran enthusiasts. But nothing else, not even a piano sound! No acmp styles...
Thanks a lot Christian for the detailed explanation. Our church has recently procured the BK-5. Some of the Organ sounds are really good. Just wanted to know if you have experimented with layering UP1,UP2 & LWR for creating complex organ tones ? also can we edit parameters to create Windchest panning effect ? thanks in advance!! :-)
Parece complexo.
Of course you can. It has 'classic' MIDI connectors and also USB. If you connect the USB to a mac it works as a MIDI controller and MIDI output. You don't need drivers. I have used this with logic express. I don't have an iPad, but I think it will work with one of those iPod to MIDI cables.
For controlling the touch go to Menu - Performance Edit - Tone Part View - and then if you will scroll down there is a option - Key Touch. Press it and you will get the settings of Touch Function in Roland BK-5.
Hi Christian. I am an Indian. You can call me Bee. I bought BK-5. I want to use Midi-Interface. Can you suggest me any software to use it in Windows. And Thankz for the Video...... You really play well bro.
+Bedanta Mookherjee Hi, can I mute instrument parts from an inbuilt style...for example want to play the drums and bass but mute the brass and strings??
+Tathagata Ghosh Yes, there are individual volume and mute settings for each track. (A simple mixer). You can also change the voice for each track (for example: replace guitars by pianos to create piano styles). You can use the built in style editor to make copies of the default styles with different settings or even edit the patterns.
I HAVE A DOUBT ON THIS MODEL ...FROM THE ACCOMP / LEFT HAND, THE "SINGLE FINGER" CHORD IS NOT OR FINGERED ONLY ? kindly answer to abrahamabey1@hotmail.com ...thanks
sorry but my E50 play same like this... drums still don't knock down... roland where do you go?! show something custom-made like yamaha psr s910 etc. this guy is... hahaha lol :D the last style is Countdown Rock. ideal for The Final Countdown, anything else
Roland shame on you..........why pleople like this has to make a sound review??? this guy Sucks playing.....come on make a Sound by sound review.and for the lady that ask yes the Yamaha sounds better but The PSR 750(710) or up models.
If you play better then me it is perfectly ok. But you are right. Roland did not publish any meaningfull demo videos on the net. It looks like they do not want to sell....
Not that i play better or not pal......you should Practice first then record..but thanks i dondt like the sounds......anyway.....and sorry is not personal .
Juan Roca Yes, the reference to his playing was very personal, and very unnecessary. By the way, you should also practice your English before posting comments on RUclips (if you must post anything at all).
Yes, you can. The BK-5 will mix the line-in signal into its own speakers, the headphone out and also into its line out, so you could connect a larger amp. If you use the build-in USB sound recorder, your synth will also be mixed in.

Do you think i can put my synthesizer to the BK-5's line-in so i can play both and listen both trough the speakers of the BK-5?
Thanks!
Thanks in advance
.,so bk 5 is very expensive here in dubai right now....psr s650 is more affordable than the bk 5 right now?.so should i go with the yamaha?
OK , it has mic input, can it process audio singing through any effects?
Not much info available on these instruments.
No acmp styles...
does this keyboard have sitll 8 beats 16beats and rock or ballad beats? tnx... nice playnig ..
Thanks a lot!
.,is it better than yamaha psr s650 and juno di?
Parece complexo.
can we use BK-5 as a MIDI controller (to control DAW on iPad or mac)?? Thank you
Of course you can. It has 'classic' MIDI connectors and also USB. If you connect the USB to a mac it works as a MIDI controller and MIDI output. You don't need drivers. I have used this with logic express. I don't have an iPad, but I think it will work with one of those iPod to MIDI cables.
Thx!
hi can you tell me if i dont want to play with touch response.what i have to do to make all key sound on same volume.
For controlling the touch go to Menu - Performance Edit - Tone Part View - and then if you will scroll down there is a option - Key Touch. Press it and you will get the settings of Touch Function in Roland BK-5.
It has a step sequencer 16 parts? Thanks good video
No, it does not have a sequencer. You will need a computer & software to do this.
Hi Christian. I am an Indian. You can call me Bee. I bought BK-5. I want to use Midi-Interface. Can you suggest me any software to use it in Windows. And Thankz for the Video...... You really play well bro.
Bedanta Mookherjee hi..i am from India too bro..How is the bk-5 and what do u use it for??
and how much did u get it for ?
+Bedanta Mookherjee Hi, can I mute instrument parts from an inbuilt style...for example want to play the drums and bass but mute the brass and strings??
+Tathagata Ghosh Yes, there are individual volume and mute settings for each track. (A simple mixer). You can also change the voice for each track (for example: replace guitars by pianos to create piano styles). You can use the built in style editor to make copies of the default styles with different settings or even edit the patterns.
+Christian Koehler thank you chris..cheers

Roland shame on you..........why pleople like this has to make a sound review??? this guy Sucks playing.....come on make a Sound by sound review.and for the lady that ask yes the Yamaha sounds better but The PSR 750(710) or up models.
If you play better then me it is perfectly ok. But you are right. Roland did not publish any meaningfull demo videos on the net. It looks like they do not want to sell....

***** Thank you. I don't care. It's just RUclips as we all know it...
Juan Roca Yes, the reference to his playing was very personal, and very unnecessary. By the way, you should also practice your English before posting comments on RUclips (if you must post anything at all).
ROFL. Btw that clear music book stands looks pretty neat
