My mother is Puerto Rican and made the best rice and beans. I have been caring for her since she got sick and I've been having to learn to cook. This is something I really want to learn to make for her.
Hey Carl! This recipe is delicious and simple, hope your mom enjoys it!
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen I made a couple weeks ago. Will admit I added a few things to it. Just to make it my own. She loved it so much she had 2 plates. Now she wants me to make it for Thanksgiving.
Looks delicious! For me, rice and beans are a comfort food. Thanks for the recipe.😊
I made this last night. It was fantastic. My wife is Puerto Rican and it reminded her of hers mothers rice and beans. Thank you!

La deliciosa comida de abuela, nada mejor que un buen plato de arroz con habichuelas
Exactamente!! Triste cuando abuela ya no está
This is great! I had no idea there was squash and other ingredients in beans until now. Would love to see a video about mofongo or arroz con pollo...two of my favorites!
Thanks! So glad that you found this helpful. Great ideas for next videos! Mofongo is actually coming very soon!!
my mother makes it with pumpkin instead of squash. Give it a try! tastes amazing
Looks AMAZING! Thank you for making these videos. I'm very interested in more vegetarian Puerto Rican recipes!
So glad you like this! We'll definitely keep your request in mind and work on some vegetarian recipes. (Spoiler alert) We are doing bistec this coming week, but I know alot of people who adopt the same recipe we'll be making and make it with vegetarian meat. I also know that the company Beyond Meat is making some really awesome products, so maybe we'll try making it with that sometime!
Hey Anneke, just wanted to follow up on your suggestion and let you know that we put out a new vegetarian video (ruclips.net/video/bbl-Vffqmus/видео.html) using Beyond Beef to make pastelon de maduro. Hope you enjoy!
I have never seen rice made this way 😳 wow! Increíble
And im a native 🤪. Pretty intriguing
Yea! Give it a try! I know that all of our families have their own recipes but this is our go to!!
Great recipe for both the rice and the beans.
Thanks for sharing.
BTW I love rice and butter.🤗
Thank you for watching!!
So enjoying you channel. I can't wait to try some of these recipes.
Yay! Glad you enjoyed 🤗 And just let us know if you have any recipes in particular that you are looking for.
You guys are making me hungry 😆
I like to see a video how to make Arroz con pollo. I never know how to add the pollo for a flavorful rice combination. Got any videos?
We do: ruclips.net/video/TqDTBGLeoDI/видео.html. It's a little different than alot of people's arroz con pollo, since we leave alot of the chicken intact, but we think it's delicious this way! 😊
I plate the beans in bottom and rice on top. It prevents the rice from being soggy and the beans from drying out, win win.
I love to add pigs feet and smoked ham or smoked bacon, thick cut from the Hispanic butcher♡♡
I boil NY pigs feet 2 times to really clean them, boiling in clean, fresh water each time. I also saute the smoked bacon and then add this to my pot of beans so that the pigs feet absorb the flavors from the bean stock:))
Wow!! That is so traditional too!! Jo doesn’t eat pork but you are keeping it 💯 real!!
Liked l love rice and beans with
Amarillo's god bless
Oh yum!! Maduritos por el lado it’s the best!!
WOW! Tastes just like Mom's!
That’s the best compliment ever!!
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen I took some to Mom, (she is at an assisted living home) and she raved how delicious it was!

Thanks for the channel!
You're welcome 🤗🤗
Yummy! Great video. Puerto Rican rice and beans are one of my favorites. Sometimes if I don't have squash I will add potatoes instead.
Thank you!! That’s a great point about the potatoes, we have done that as well!
I would love to learn how to do arroz con pollo!
Awesome! Arroz con pollo is a favorite of ours! We will get working on that!!
My family makes exactly the same food with same ingredients and interpretation and they not all from the island. Titi and Tio learned on their own as well my mom and pops. We didn't learn from Abuela. Beautiful food!! Ay tiene Hambre
Awesome
Hear the kid favorite lol brought me back my niece and nephews love rice with butter or rice with ketchup
Lol! Yes!
Love PR. And P R ‘s.
Thx.
Thanks!! Puerto Rico 🇵🇷!!!
My dad taught me how to make rice AND to make it with pegaito. You didn't mention pegao. The little cul-de-sac where my abuelita lived in Mayagüez, her 6 neighbors would exchange dinner among each other and the pride of each was who could make the deepest pegao without burning it. Boy, did I love that part. My abuelita could make her pegao about 1" thick. 🙂
Oh yes, the pegao is the best! What was your family's trick for getting the pegao to work?
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen My dad told me that you should put more oil than necessary and once you let the water evaporate a bit then, with the flame higher than low but not medium, without turning the rice, you let it cook for 20 minutes. Afterwards, you can turn the rice without reaching the bottom. You're allowed to add a bit of water if rice needs to cook a bit longer. I have only been able to get about 1/4" of pegao. 🙂
Everything looks good. What type of appliance was used to cook both
Just a pot - nothing special.
Thank you for sharing..
I'm Puerto Rican
I make my beans, without olives, my family don't like olives in their food, also no bay leaf. I do put in my beans ham or Italian sausage.
We also prefer to cook the dry beans first.
Great insights!
Great video... I miss the Island a bunch. I was stationed at Ft Buchanan for 4 years and then I got out of the Army and stayed there for another year. I loved it and has so many great friends. And I loved Rice and Beans with Platinos
Where are you at now? Lots of grocery stores have them
Thank you…
Great video, Jeff and Jo! Love your content. I have a question, how do you best reheat left over rice if you don’t have a microwave? Is there a trick to reheating on the stove that we should know?
Great question! My mom loves to reheat on the stove. She uses a frying pan and adds a bit of water at the bottom. Low heat and you can cover it.
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen thank you so much. I will try that.
After moving from PR, I stopped adding pumpkin to the beans because I can't find the same one here ... never thought of using sqaush! I'm adding it to the grocery list to try it next time :)
Yes!! It has worked really well for us! Let us know how you like the new addition.
❤❤❤❤❤from Chicago thanks u 2 .......
How are things going in Chicago??
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen Chicago is doing okay..i just thank the Lord for each day and my little 9yr old daughter. 🤗 i also look forward 2 ur cooking videos so much we have been in quarantin or having 2 stay at home by our governor and mayor. So basically u2 have become a fun learning little class honestly we truly enjoy u 2. My just waiting to see make the fried plantain lasagna...❤❤
@@justicelachicanaricana4407 Stay safe and healthy! And say Hi!! to your little one. Does she have any favorite recipes that she would like us to make here?
@@justicelachicanaricana4407 oh also! Here's the recipe for pastelon (which is how we call the plantain lasagna, I know people have different names for it). The one thing is that we use vegetarian meat in the recipe but you can just substitute the same amount with ground beef which is the most traditional. ruclips.net/video/bbl-Vffqmus/видео.html
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen awesome MY Daughter and I can do the vegan .... 🥰 my mom made me this once i will never forget the smell or taste or all the love she made it with i almost ate the entire thing every time i would pass by it i would sneak a taste 🤣🤣🤣 its was mind blowing 2 Me how wonderful it was i have had others but that one was my Favorite!!!!!
Cool
Hun you fluff rice with a fork, just try it one day to see the difference😜 I love this channel, you guys are so cute together 🥰
Thanks for the tip! Thank you!!
Love this!!! What rice do you use?
Thanks Rubi!! We used medium grain rice in this video. We've used different brands from time to time, including Goya and Catalina. The rice may vary a little bit in how much water it needs (some small amount like 5%) but I think that has as much to do with the humidity as it does with the brand.
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen Thanks! I always loved your cooking in Boston. I'm excited you guys started this RUclips channel!
@@rubiruiz-bruzos8558 Yay!! Thanks so much :) Hope you enjoy the videos going forward and let us know if there's anything in particular that you'd be interested in seeing!
Can I use potato instead of squash?
Yes!! That’s what I do when we don’t have squash.
Can you use a ride cooker
You can. I would leave it without the top for those first 6 minutes on high and then put the top on and let it cook.
what type of beans do you use?
We use red beans or pink beans or pinto beans or white beans. Hahaha! Any beans!
Yumm! Will definitely try this sometime :)
Please do so and let us now how it turns out!!
For the rice. The 2 Lbs is equal to how many cups of rice ?
Hi Lauren! It’s about 4 3/4 cups of rice. Happy new year!
Love it!
Thank you!
What kind of beans were used?
We used red kidney beans
Hallo I enjoyed your Videos and would like to know what is the songs name that is playing in the background
The song is Bomba Pa Siempre by Jimmy Fontánez
is there a substitute for the olive oil and squash?
You should be able to switch the olive oil for just about any other fat (corn oil, canola oi, etc). For the squash, if you don't like it totally fine to leave it out. Jo's family is really big into it, so we always add it. But I also know a lot of people who leave it out.
My mother made that a lot
What did she usually put in her beans? It's always so interesting how everyone does it a little bit different.
Any particular kind of squash
We most commonly use kabocha squash.
oye pero cuando vas a poner un video como hacer bacalaitos
Si claro! Pero nos tienes que traer unos bacalaos frescos cuando vayas a pescar!
Sunset park Brooklyn 🇵🇷
What part of the island you guys from :0)
joshjaydah hi there! Yomarie (Jo) is from Humacao and Jeff is from Mayaguez. Where are you from??
Jeff and Jo's Puerto Rican Kitchen i was born in rio piedras caimito. Came to the states when I was a baby. I would spend the summers there my whole life. I’m wondering how well
You guys speak English did you guys go to a private school? I know many people speak English in PR but you guys barely have an accent 😊.I really appreciate the rice 🍚 video experiment you did. It addressed many of the questions I had growing up. My mom was blown away when you opened the lid lol 😆 she was like “nooo😂
Great question! Jo went to private school and then moved to the US for college and then Jeff moved to the US when he was 13
Jeff and Jo's Puerto Rican Kitchen thats awesome thanks for sharing I really love your Chanel ❤️ many blessings
This is my favorite meal. I don't really like I know arroz Amarillo
No shame! There's something about white rice and beans that's so comforting!!
They showed me that you place the lid on the rice once the water evaporates. Then you lower the heat and cover for 25 minutes. And my rice is 🔥. But pretty interesting
Your method sounds very close to some of my friends so I’m sure your rice is 🔥🔥
What kind of bean in this video? I once had kidney with it. Are canned beans better? Or pre soaked beans?
Can u do a fried chicken and pork chop video ......
Yum!!! Sure!
Cooking the rice for two, I cut the ingredients in half. So 1lb rice, 1/8 oil, 1 tsp salt and 2 1/2 - 3 cups water. Should I also cut the cook times in half? So for the initial boil, do 3 minutes instead of six? Then after that cook on low for 10?
No, same cooking time.
@@yomariehabenicht2292 thank you!
How did it turn out??
We never do rice like that!!!!
The Puerto Rican beans I had never had squash
My moms always did 🤷🏻♀️
Te faltó papas y el jamón
Carmen Fonseca si!! Hay tantas maneras diferentes de hacerlo. Gracias!
If you cut me I bleed rice... Lol
Lol!!
.....
Shes right it is easy to make Sofreto LOL dont know how to spell it
It is easy to make sofrito!! We actually have two videos on it: ruclips.net/video/8sHPb6heV-0/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/GU0BR4hhdkA/видео.html Check them out!
Not sure what happened but I followed the rice instructions exactly and ended up with a rice consistency of mashed potatoes. It was basically a paste. 🤮
I'm sorry but that's not the way puertorrican make white rice, I'm 63 years old born and raise in p.r and that's the way you make arroz con dulce
Thanks for watching! I understand that's not how you make white rice, but this recipe makes delicious rice. Give it a try!
There are many roads to Rome. We all make the same only a little different. I make rice but not like this and long grain. I’m 73
Way too much talking, need more direction then your life stories. But thanks for the rest of the video.
He really doesn’t look puertorrican
But neither do i so what the fuck
Hahaha! He gets that a lot!
Clearly you do not know about puertorrican cook.
Nor the rice nor the beans are the way are made in Puerto Rico
Interesting. We both grew up on the island and that's how we learned how to do it. How do you do it?
Heavenisthelimit, clearly, surely you dont know such versatile ways to cook rice and beans. As long as you use sofrito, sazon, tomato sauce as the base, you can add any color beans, punkin, ham, potatoes, salami, etc. These young kids are doing great so far. I was born in PR, grew up there, I KNOW PUERTORICAN FOOD. I KNOW HOW TO COOK IT TOO. Clearly you may have a different way to cook Puerto Rican food, and clearly if it is close to Jo's it's going to be...clearly, good. Be blessed.
@@merysnow4938 sorry its took to your heart my coment .
You can check, I am not the only one that think the same.
Anyway, I stand in what I said.
I Cook since I was 9 (65 now) AMD I have been developing my own style thru the years.
Even for a sofrito I have my own formula, no preservatives. Ají I use is not the common one.
Cooking is a big universe.
Just ask me what to Cook and I'll be ready.
Good look to these young huy. Evolve.
@@heavenisthelimit1 your comment was harsh. These kids are young, they need to be lifting up, not putdowns. Yes, I could change the step when the oil was mixed with the rice, but, it did not harmed the finished product. I agree that ajices dulces,(Culantro,a long flat green leave to use in sofrito) maybe pimienta negra, might have helped...but not by much. I also have cooked for longer than these kids been living, and that is the only reason why I know they are doing very good. I am sure that you are a great cook. Be blessed.
Everybody cooks different. That's is why we are here to learn different techniques. I like to re-fry the rice and then I add the water. But I will try your method also.
