Long hair is usually seen as an indicator of individuality, because it's not accepted in lots of places like banking or the military where people are supposed to conform. Personally, I felt like the main character was supposed to have been depressed, and was being brought to this weird, 50's era type sanitarium. All the weird things being done to him are supposed to represent how it can feel like doctors just try everything even when none of it works. By the end, the doctors are frustrated and do something drastic: cut off his head. This could represent upping the dosage of anti-depressants instead of looking for a particular one that works for the patient, or more literally could represent the practice of lobotomies which in turn represents the struggle and mistreatment of mentally ill people when being treated.

@@zucchinibyday Right now i really like dead inside by younger hunger, lotion by greenkeepers, and purple yellow red and blue by portugal the man. Not carbon copies but the vibes youre looking for.
It's because they are more alternative. They are great but for my household growing up there was a lot of country, and Nickelback. It's not surprising it's gonna be passed down to the next generation with them instead being recognized.
Matt looked EXACTLY like Mick Jagger when he performed in San Diego this June. I think he's harnessing his energy. Everything from his outfit to his dance moves were JUST like Jagger.
This song would have made it in the repertoire of any mid 60s garage band. I'm probably not the age demographic these guys are aiming for but I feel like I've gone back in time when I hear this on the radio.
Good music has no age limit! I listen to a lot of new stuff that's more than likely targeted towards a younger demographic. I wouldn't hesitate to show up at a concert if I had the opportunity. When I saw the Rolling Stones in Atlanta on their Bridges to Babylon tour 1997, there were people of all ages from Toddlers to the elderly not to mention people with alternative lifestyles. I saw an old couple and the very short old man (who looked like the old woman from Poltergeist) was being lead by the woman with a leash. LOL! It was all quite a sight to behold.
This reminds me of the Animals and such band, even though I don't. Know their names I recognized the sounds. Cool thing about liking alternative rock is that you get to be exposed to many different genres and times.
I love this song and think the video is very symbolic. The coldness in his chest represents depression (the first few lines also reflect this). Society views negative emotions as a problem to be treated, and so they force him to be "fixed" by the doctor. They try a variety of methods, including physiological analysis, women and the pursuit of love, and drugs, which are all real-world treatments. In the end, they behead him and pull out his blackened heart, symbolizing, in my opinion, the forcible end of his depressed appearance. They cover him up with a mask, and he becomes another faceless part of the society that has been watching him. This is only a facade though. The last few lines repeat that he is still cold inside, he doesn't feel right. The change is superficial; he is the same, but has now been forced to hide his emotions behind a literal mask. Additionally, the world is void of color until the women first appear. And the line "My life before me like a flash in the night" (3:53) appears just before the beheading. Your life supposedly flashes before your eyes as you die. So being "cured" actually is the end of life. They kill him, take out what they don't want, and then put back together the empty pieces. Also, note how none of the masked people act as individuals. They are a singular entity with no acceptance for what is deemed undesirable behavior.
me encanta tanto la manera en que toca Cage The Elephant, su música es tan distinta a la de otros grupos, que es como si estuvieras escuchando una banda de los 80's
As an old fan this sounds like it could be the Animals, I attended their show this summer and they certainly did not disappoint. A truly great act, catch them if you get a chance.

Absolutely agree! Both of your comments are right on the money. I think these guys knew exactly what they were doing, too. The whole video is 60's garage from the '64 Ford Falcon to the high water bell bottoms the lead singer is wearing to the black and white presentation. Yeah...I'll bet if you asked them they would say this was a tribute to their musical influences or else they just like the garage band sound. It sticks out as quite different from the rest of their music. (BTW...just checked out your channel and subscribed. The music you are posting is awesome!)
Yeah, I'm not a music expert, but I dig these guys and they did remind me of The Animals before I saw the video. Is it because I know nothing about actual musical arrangement? Yeah Probably.
I’m 36 and absolutely LOVE the retro feel of this song! I feel this way with a lot of songs that are retro. They feel nostalgic for me and I don’t know why. I can feel the lyrics on this one. I saw them as an opener once and their performance was better than the actual group I came to see.

I think the music video critiques the consequences of antidepression medication. On the one hand, the individual seeks a 'cure' from their suffering. But on other, the treatment takes away the life force that gives them a unique identity, leaving them numb. Now part of the collective, the individual no longer faces pain at the expense of feeling anything at all.

Doctor the problem's in my chest
My heart feels cold as ice but it's anybody's guess
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast before I change my mind
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast before I change my mind
Well it's cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Darker in the day than the dead of night
Cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Doctor can you help me cause something don't feel right
Something don't feel right
Sweet nurse don't look at me that way
I've seen those eyes before I can tell you want to play
Counselor give me some advice
Tell me how hard will I fall if I live a double life
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast before I change my mind
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast because there ain't much time
Well it's cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Darker in the day than the dead of night
Cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Doctor can you help me cause something don't feel right
Something don't feel right, something just ain't right
And as the darkness falls it fills up both my eyes
My life before me like a flash in the night
With my arms open wide
Well it's cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Cold, cold, cold, cold inside

cage the elephant is literally the best band u could ever imagine. just- listen.....
Something straight out of the late 60's!! This is what we need!!!
i legit thought this was the animals or the zombies at first when it came up on pandora last night
Can you suggest some songs like this? I love this song but don't know where to start :(
@@zucchinibyday Right now i really like dead inside by younger hunger, lotion by greenkeepers, and purple yellow red and blue by portugal the man. Not carbon copies but the vibes youre looking for.

I don’t understand how these guys are so amazing and not really a household name
It's because they are more alternative. They are great but for my household growing up there was a lot of country, and Nickelback. It's not surprising it's gonna be passed down to the next generation with them instead being recognized.
This has a Rolling Stones sound to it
YoursTruly Ikr 🙊
has a little doors touch as well
Matt looked EXACTLY like Mick Jagger when he performed in San Diego this June. I think he's harnessing his energy. Everything from his outfit to his dance moves were JUST like Jagger.
Finally someone who sees that! The whole album has some Rolling Stones spirit
Checkout the Love Me Nots.
I'm here because P!ATD lost a Grammy to these guys and I wanted to check them out. Safe to say I'll be staying here for a while!
Renee is trash Same
i like both :D next year P!ATD
i actually love both of them and honestly same
^this guys opinion overpowers everyone else"s because he has superior taste in absolutely everything, there is no way you can stump this man.
Should see them live... amazing!
Yup, I hear the Seeds in them.
This song reminds me of the Animals 60s band.
Arrr matey! This is a good song
This reminds me of the Animals and such band, even though I don't. Know their names I recognized the sounds. Cool thing about liking alternative rock is that you get to be exposed to many different genres and times.
I love you so much Cage the Elephant, you deserve more....Its better to have a loyal fandom instead of just have numbers without a meaning.

To me, this song has a very 60's garage rock vibe...early British invasion ala Kinks, Animals, or Troggs. I love it!
Look up The Association's song "Windy"
OnPS4 OMG I see it

CAGE THE ELEPHANT IS LIFE
This will always be my favorite cage the elephant song, hands down
congratss for the grammy guys!!! you really deserve it
Yes
blown away. these guys sound nothing like stones animals or doors. people should listen to 60s garage and discover how awesome it is. don't know anything about this band but heard it on the radio and they brought back the sound of the seeds, chocolate watchband, standells and many other garage bands.
The music you are posting is awesome!)
hear The Electric Prunes emotion cryin
johnnysnotty I read garbage
Wow just wow people sometimes
Yeah, I'm not a music expert, but I dig these guys and they did remind me of The Animals before I saw the video. Is it because I know nothing about actual musical arrangement? Yeah Probably.
anyone else appreciate that one of the guitarists had a blue oyster cult on his jacket?
Adin Rollins Glad I wasn't the only one that caught that!
I been looking in the coments if anyone realized that the begining of this song is kind of similar to The reaper.
I’m 36 and absolutely LOVE the retro feel of this song! I feel this way with a lot of songs that are retro. They feel nostalgic for me and I don’t know why. I can feel the lyrics on this one. I saw them as an opener once and their performance was better than the actual group I came to see.
Hi I recommend a song and accompanying video called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
I'd suggest "Take It Or Leave It" by Cage the Elephant for the retro vibe, and not because I'm a bot like Mr Skies here.
Who were they opening for?
just started listening to Cage the Elephant and i didn’t realize how many of their songs i’ve heard before
My Dad heard this and says it sounds like a 60's garage band song...He loves it...But then he is old enough to remember 60's garage bands...
I was born in 1960, and when I first heard it, I thought it was some band from the sixties and I wondered how I'd never heard it before. It is a great song! Cage the Elephant is a great band.
They sounds like Rolling Stones
Sounds like The Kinks, I love it.
I got Rolling Stones, the animals, and a Donovan vibe
Schultz is a lyrical genius. The things that this band does with music continues to amaze me. They are definitely one if my greatest musical influences.
I’ve seen them play in there hometown close to mine and went to their own festival called starry nights. I’ve ran into members at the mall and I can’t help but root for them! They are original yet familiar and one of the best rock bands of the past 30 years
I'm a metalhead but I love this band.
Same here
This has a cool early 60s vibe to it. My dad said it reminds him so much of the Animals, the Standells, or some garage band.
BassPlayerSusan as well as the seeds and chocolate watchband. your dad got good taste.
johnnysnotty. definitely the Seeds "Pushing Too Hard.

the videoclip is like a tribute to kubrick.
Once, when I was in an army hospital because of an illness, I listened to cage the elephant songs. And this music, melody, text and words, all this cured me on equal terms with medicines! And I want to say thank you for your music! She helped me a lot then! helped me break out of the army depression! helped to recover! thanks! sorry for my English! I'm from Russia!

I gotta say that this band is the best band in a long time. Their is actually a story behind every lyric. It's been so long that I can say that I am excited to watch the video. True to their art the rythem lyrics & melody aren't complete without the video. And almost every video blows me away. Good Job fellas. Keep doing you. And thanks for a great sound track.

giraffe first two? Perfect confusion and Cage The Elephant or CTE and Thank You Happy Birthday? And there's reason for name shit the 3rd album, it's called Melophobia. This album is good, but it isn't the same CTE, they changed direction
