Thanks for posting this. I don't have a rack on my camper shell, either. I thought a rack would solve my problem, but this is even better, since you can drive out from under it. Awesome!
It's not the quickest set up but once it is set up it works great. It is like adding a room on the back of the truck when I add tarps on the side. Thanks!
Most of them I purchased from Amazon. They come with paracord but I swapped it out for a longer length high viz paracord. www.amazon.com/Pairs-inch-Adjustable-Heavy-Hanger/dp/B07XKLLVL7/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=1%2F8+rope+ratchet&qid=1599277232&sr=8-3
I have a small camp trailer I built from scratch on a Harbor Freight Trailer base. I think this will definitely come in handy. I may substitute the conduit and Angle for 1.5" PVC. Awesome set up!
Keith, have you considered attaching the tops of the upright poles to the ends of the cross piece? If you fabricated a simple pivoting joint, then when you pick up the frame, the legs would just fall into place ready to be raised. When packing up, just fold the legs back along the horizontal piece and secure, perhaps with velcro cable ties, and roll everything up. Seems like it would be a lot less juggling during set-up. Cheers.
That's a good idea. With all the scrap machines I have laying around in the "bone yard" where I work, I should be able to come up with something. Thanks for the idea. Cheers!.
Do you own a home ? I love these videos, they make me want to get rid of my Mortgage. and what is this stuff you call rain ? said ,the man from southern california.
Keith, First of all I'm sorry to hear Your broke Your toes. I hope You're recovering good and not in pain. It looks like You've got Your canopy figured out--nice job. If that piece of aluminum angle worry's You about scratching the top of Your camper, just split a piece of rubber hose and put some 8001 3M trim cement in the hose or on the bottom edge of the angle and it's a done deal. "Cut Way Back On Your Drinkin" if that's what caused Your broken toes. Just kidding Keith.
LOL ! Toes healing up fast - if anything I think this would have caused me to start some heavy drinking! Good thing about having an old shell is I don't mind too much if it gets scratched up but that is a great idea. Thanks and great to hear from you as always!
Great vid Keith, how often do you move your truck after setting up the awning? Im trying to decide if I prefer something attached to a roof rack or free standing like yours. Any thoughts?
A roof rack awning is a great option. I would buy and add a side awning if i had a roof rack on my truck. I really like the back awning for shade and protection from the rain and elements. It's like having an extra room or tent on the back that I can leave set up even when driving my truck somewhere. I leave the back of my awning tied down against the shell for stability unless I want to drive the truck somewhere while camping. If it's really windy I try to keep the truck parked. I've had those instant up dome canopies blow away like a parachute if not tied down good but my flat truck awning has done great so far using all the tie downs. Thank you!
The information tag is missing or covered up with Reflectix. The shell is so old that the company is no longer in business. I think was "Tri" something. The writing on the outside is just the dealership in GA. I've seen similar shells that are newer models. Thanks!

It's CLEVERLY DESIGN, & AFFORDABLE & DURABLE & VERSATILE !!! MASSIVE THANKS for SHARING !!!!👍
Big thank you! Cheers!
Great job and idea! I will be copying this. Thanks!
Yes! Sounds great. Thank you!
Love the ratchet rope idea instead of dealing with knots. Instant adjustments.
Those are so handy, easy, and cheap. They work great even after many dirty and raining trips. Thanks.
@@geenote where did you get yours from? And are you using it with paracord?

Fantastic video! I've been trying to work out a good way to make my tarp free standing. This is perfect! Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! I often add tarps on the sides for better protection and privacy.
That is an incredible design!
Thanks! I love this canopy and use it often. It's easy to build, inexpensive, sturdy, adjustable, versatile, and folds up nice. Thanks for commenting!
Very Cool thanks for the video very informative and a pleasure to watch
Thanks again for watching and dropping in!
Nicely done!
Thanks for the visit!

As long as the PVC doesn't flex too much that may work great. Thank you!👍
@@geenote I recently bought some sch 40 in 1.5" its almost a 1/4" thick. I think it should hold up fine, the key is to have sturdy legs. 😁
@@incogbeanro Yes the sch 40 is a must. Sounds like you have a good plan. You will love it!
I’ve built something similar to what you build but I used a canvas tarp instead I think it gives a fancier look
Canvas is probably a tougher material too. Nothin fancy about my set up - LOL! This one is is very lightweight and packs small.
Yes. Got some ideas 💡
Great!

Great build, I am making a similar one for my dad's truck. Do you remember what size washers and pop rivets you used? Thanks!
1/8" X 1/4" long pop rivets, 1" fender washers, 1 1/4" conduit pipe. Hope this helps. Thanks!
Who is the canopy manufacture?
I bought the tarp from Harbor Freight. Tent poles from Cabela's.
No! The manufacture’s name of the fiberglass pickup canopy please.
Thanks
