I just watched a video where they said that 45° is too much of an angle. The stakes should by at about a 15° angle. Reason: to much angle means the stake which the guy lines are attached to are too near the surface. There is less dirt holding the stake down. Less angle = more dirt preventing the stake pulling through the dirt. My stakes had been pulling up in15-20 miles wind. Changed to 15° angle, problem solved. No wind to deal with either way, does not matter
Thanks for your sharing! The 15° angle does make sense in certain situations, especially for low or moderate-height anchor points where the force on the stake is more downward than lateral. However, the best angle can depend on how high the anchor point (like a tarp) is. If the tarp is set up very high, the lateral force on the stake increases significantly, especially in strong winds. In such cases, a steeper angle (closer to 30°-45°) may provide better holding power because it resists the pull more effectively. The soil type and stake design also play a big role-soft or loose soil might need a different approach compared to hard-packed dirt. Your suggestion about 15° is definitely worth experimenting with, especially for lower setups, but for taller tarps, I’d be curious to know if you think 15° still works effectively. Thanks again for sparking this discussion! 😊
@@ethanhorizon I hope my first comment did not seem as if I was being that know-it-all guy LOL! I have a 10x12 tarp setup in my backyard testing some telescoping poles. Green Elephant and Avoforest brands. My ridge line is two poles at about 7 ft in height. I run about 15 feet of paracord out from the two poles and do use 15°. Seems to hold in wind and rain. I am in Tennessee, Knoxville area. I wish I had saved the link to the YT page with the video. It explained the logic/physics behind it. 90° angle to the angle of the pull seems to be the wisdom. I used 15°-ish because my 12" stakes were pulling through the dirt, 15° seemed to fix that. I also use some DIY stakes made from cut t-poles. I use them on rainy days and moist soil. Even those pulled out until I changed the angle. Conditions were raining, wet dirt covered in grass, 15mph winds, gusting to 25mph...OR it could be I drove them further into the ground after the initial staking. Hmm..
Thank you so much! It's crazy how hard it is to find a tutorial setting up a tarp solo with poles. What's even better is that you did a fabulous job explaining this. I really like how you showed the 4-pole configuration at the end. For some reason, my brain could only envision poles at the four corners and it would sag in the middle. What you did is ideal for many of my camping situations. I'll be watching this again to make sure I feel confident.
This is so clear and ease to understand. Thank you for not cluttering up the video with unnecessary story and music. I applaud you and appreciate your video. It is exactly what I was looking for!

Thank you Ethan. At last a tarp set up without trees! Living in the UK we do a lot of camping in fields and meadows unlike North America and other parts the world where there are extensive forests. I always want to use a tarp but all the videos are about putting up tarp by strapping to trees. Your system is great for the kind of camping I do. Thanks

Awesome job man. Really enjoyed how you created this instruction professionally yet keeping it simple for everyone to follow. I’ll be using this as a guideline to setup the rain fly next week while out camping. Off to Amazon to get what i need which also you let me know perfectly haha. Cheers
Nice video. To make it faster to set up, you could leave the guylines tied to the tarp permanently and then just bundle them up and fold the setup with them attached.

@@ethanhorizon thanks so much Ethan I am on my way to watch it... yuss 3 days ago I did actually attempt to put a tarp over my van 🥴 we had a break from bad weather, I started off well but ended up with guy lines everywhere coz the wind picked up it looked pretty messy but I thoroughly enjoyed the process, I can only do better and watch more videos and practise, your video is perfect timing, I got the house to myself. It depends on how strong is the wind. I live in Malaysia, this setup can hold against relatively strong wind. The facing direction is also important. Don’t setup against the wind direction.
Very helpful and to the point 😊. If you don’t mind me asking a stupid question, why not keep the lines attached to the tarp to save a step in the even of rainy weather?
Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, when you put away the tarp, you can keep the guy line tied to the tarp, so you can quickly setup the tarp next time. I should have mentioned it in the video 😊
it's better i just show you the link. I didn't buy from them, but just look for similar pole like this www.amazon.com/Telescoping-Adjustable-Motorcycle-Lightweight-Replacement/dp/B08LNRTQCG/ref=sr_1_6?crid=2RED7QPU8YZQO&keywords=extended%2Bpole%2Btent&qid=1695950182&sprefix=extended%2Bpole%2Bten%2Caps%2C447&sr=8-6&th=1
Thank you for your comment! The sagging at the top of your tarp could be due to insufficient tension in the poles. Here’s what you can try to fix it: 1. Make sure your guylines are securely attached to the poles and staked at a wide angle (further from the base of the poles). 2. I'm assume you're using guyline tensioner? Try adding a second guyline to each pole for stronger support. Attach them at different angles to keep the poles more stable. (If you're not using tensioner, please use Trucker Hitch Knot for stronger support) 3. Ensure the tarp’s edges are evenly tensioned, as this will also help reduce sagging at the top. Let me know if this works for you! 😊

super nice technique... I can now pitch my canopy by myself... thank you Ethan...!!
Wonderful, thank you for sharing ... have you set up using a ridge-line pole before, does it make the tarp more resilient?
You mean horizontal ridge-line between 2 poles? It might not suitable in this case. Ridge line is better for between 2 trees.
How well does this hold up in the wind?
It depends on how strong is the wind. I live in Malaysia, this setup can hold against relatively strong wind. The facing direction is also important. Don’t setup against the wind direction.
Lower overall height is better for windy days.
Also set the edge that faces the wind much lower.
Either way don’t hang on if the wind takes it! 😊
