- Check out these step-by-step instructions on how to build a mini ramp with pro skater Billy Rohan.
If you've got a bunch of pro-skateboarder friends and you're splurging on a giant birthday party for yourself, it goes without saying that you're going to need a half-pipe. That's why Billy Rohan, a NYC skateboarder, came by VICE's 15th anniversary party two days early bearing lumber, power tools, and an entourage of eager skater guys and girls. From there it was a hurried flurry of plywood shavings and bandsaw screechings as Billy walked us step-by-step through the building of a mini ramp that can service a couple thousand partygoers. Think of this little how-to number as the This Old Ramp edition of Epicly Later'd.

Building a mini ramp is on my 'To Do' list in life.
Did you build one yet
Ughh so expensive tho... some day tho, some day
I built mine in 1983. It wasn't nearly as nice.
Im building one in 2 months, ganna be during the summer. I have almost half the wood and am only 16, If you are building one, then just build it!
I built mine in 1989 when I was 15. Ramp was 3 meters wide 1.5-1.8 meters high. I still miss that ramp, it was pretty good one:)
Guy knows his stuff and is a really good teacher. He explained the important concepts way better than I could.
Man this is sick!
Any backyard plans? Nah he prob gonna make a skateboard out of redstone and then make a miniramp
OMG... What was you doing here Mumbo!?!?!
Bluebed (8 years ago)
What the hell. out of everyone I expected to see in this comment section, you were at the bottom of the list
Mumbo???
I swear...Am I the only one who needs a skate intervention. I seem to be going farther down the rabbit whole daily!! Skating is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!
I've just turned 36 and just got back into skating after quitting about 12 years ago. I'm way too addicted now and I have money to fund it this time around :D. Going to build a ramp in my basement for "my kids"
You don’t need an intervention, you need some enablers
@@fonosayno yes bud. That's more or less me. 36 now, haven't skated since my late teens and only got back into it recently. I'm currently strongly considering building one of these for "my 2 kids" even tho everyone knows its for me. Good to hear someone else like me feeling the passion again.
Fono me too haha 40 and building one in my attic, when we get the house l'm using the yard, doubling the size and building a fun box and rails, and hopefully kids will be on the way 😂
can't get past "screw them in the corner" ....So they are in the industry
I just built my ramp following the specs shown in this video. It is, overall, an excellent way to build a ramp. There are a few key things things that get left out or too quickly glossed over in the video: 1. A full materials list. 2 instructions for setting the coping so that it sticks up/out the right amount (1/4" up, 3/8" out). 3. How to lay each layer of plywood down so that the seams aren't railroaded. 4. The posts supporting the deck need to be braced at the bottom and sit on something dry like a cinder block so they don't rot. 5. If you aren't building on a level surface inside, ground leveling has to be done. It is, even on slightly sloped ground, a pain in the ass.
If you can find someone who is at least somewhat experienced in carpentry, you can save yourself time, money and stress by avoiding common mistakes. (Cutting the transitions curves cleanly and consistently is not that easy)
The transitions are very mellow. If you want a faster ramp, consider a tighter radius.
Also, the decks need more support than is depicted in the video. I added another support post near the front of the platform where it meets the transition in the middle of the deck.
I live in Northern California and got a pretty sweet deal on lumber and this ramp still cost me around $1400 in lumber and screws.
thanks!
did you do 7 foot transitions with 8 feet of flat? do you have enough speed to continue up the opposing side without having to pump like crazy (i.e. you do get tired a lot on your ramp?) also how do you like your coping with 3/8 inch out? i was thinking 1/4 inch for both but than was thinking 3/8 for both as 1/4 may seem a bit small. thanks in advanced!
Matt Fisher do you still have the ramp?
@Matt Fisher yes I agree The coping instructions was way to brief. shouldn't you use lock washers on the inside of the pipe and thicker screws like #10 instead of #8 wood screws? Or you have to drill two different size wholes in the pipe a larger on the outside and smaller on the inside. Does the back of the pipe get another 2X4 or something smaller to add support?
Can you share your specs? I'd love to make this ramp!
This tutorial of building a mini ramp is so sweet. Thank you for the various details and quality of instructions, you outrageous people did a great job.
I wish I saw this 15 years ago. The last mini we made was about this size and the slogan "cut to fit" was used a lot towards the end of the build. Everyone should build at least one epic ramp in their lifetime. Skate and Destroy ⚡🔥⚡
instructions unclear, where do I get Billy Rohan
rots dog dog kitty easy - date his step daughter
Took the time to blur out the Dewalt name but everyone who has ever touched a tool knows what it is. Lol.
I agree, they could have blurred out the whole tool. If you work in this business you would still know this was a dewalt tool. lol
I mean its not really about not letting people know what tool it is its more about just getting the actual logo blurred so they don’t get in any legal trouble.
Pretty sure it's a matter of getting sued I don't see why they would care if you know what brand saw he's using.
The Greenman yeah but the company would probably take advantage of someone monetizing a video using their tools and would claim the video, meaning that they would earn all the money made off this video
Just like how everyone on Jersey shore puts electrical or duct tape over the Bud Light logos lol
Q. "How To Build A Mini Ramp with Billy Rohan"
A: Be friends with Billy and ask him nicely!
It's not that hard...you can get a lot of wood for free at a lumber yard or junkyard, there are large containers outside of wood factories, you can find all kinds of shit. And just practice. Make a small ramp for starters, something for a toddler, then your mind is like formatted, youknow exactly what you need and how to do it.
ferise1 ok but where tf do you find a lumberyard
@@moneysoles5185 Google one in your area
ridiculous... seriously, why so many dislikes? I love this.. If you don't skate, have nothing to do with it, I suppose I can understand and possibly get angry that Vice is making a video about something I don't know piss about. Maybe that's what's going through their heads? Seriously though, why would you dislike the video? Doesn't make any sense.
he said hi to me once years back while skating the banks....made my day
what a guy
this video helped a lot. i wish you would go in more detail on the placement/measurement of how the coping sits - i get that its 2", just curious about the cut depth into the wood.
we added alot of extras (8 foot deep deck, on one end and a 4 foot deck on the opposite side, stone foundation, crush and run, sod, river rocks, railings, skate paint), wood, screws, felt paper, black steel coping, little over $2,500.00, plus about 100 hours of labor 2 guys sometimes 3. Epic ramp, just hung the American flag on it yesterday. Long Live Skating & God Bless America
What did you use river rocks for? And is the 8 foot deep deck to put a few chairs on?
This is an awesome video. Just wanted to point one thing out to new carpenters. This video shows them using drywall screws which are not strong enough for structural work (especially in shear, see 9:32). Great for securing the decking, but not for building the stick frame. For that you'd want to use actual structural screws or back them up with framing nails. Also, construction adhesive under the coping is a wonderful trick to make it durable! Loved the video!
I use to skate with Billy back in the day killing it in gville
Still rolling with him at the 1-5 ramp, in gville..old man Wednesdays
This is the second video I watch from "Vice". Nice work, really like what I've seen so far. Keep it up.
Thank you! Now my town is gonna have a skating ramp.
Does your town have a ramp?
Damn l wanna know too.
Party gets more and more hotboxed as the footy continues 😂😂😂
Look at how hazy it got at 12:12 you know what was going on it there lol
+U.S.Skyline BNR32GTR 420 blaze it brah
Hahaha
fog machine to celebrate the new ramp. These fine young men would not partake in the illegal activity of smoking of the devils lettuce. They are above that
@@TheHeadlessHorseman They're vaping, brah. Making those massive clouds, brah.
It's just a bunch of sweaty man meat foggin up the joint
They make it look easy but I know if I tried to build it, everything would be misaligned and non-flush lol
Not what I expected to see from Vice. Then again, what do you ever expect from them? Gotta love the variety of videos!
1 word of advice from a carpenter. Do NOT have your plywood seams match up. Stagger your seams and it will be MUCH stronger.
Interesting. Can you explain why?
Yosef Estill Linear stress on the long axis of the sheet of ply focuses at the end of the sheet.
When you put 2 layers of ply wood on the whole stagger the seam doesn't matter as long a you stagger the two layers. stagger the seams and then stagger the the next layer different and seams staggered would just lead to a ton of waste of ply wood, and more time dicking around. Just make sure u stagger the each layer and its good. I am a carpenter, and I've built ramps before.
Raymond Flower still better if you stagger the seams on each layer individually and from one another. It does NOT waste plywood if any if you do it right. If you were a carpenter and not a carpenters helper you would know this. I'm not trying to be a dick but it is not cool to give out wrong information.
SweetMooch Interesting. Thanks for the info.
Why so many dislikes? This is a cool vid on some basic carpentry with the usual vice production towards it. No reason to thumbs down.
I so gotta build one when i finally settle down and have my own house!
Same way we did it 30 years ago.Cept no impact drills then. And couldn't afford masonite.(Actually, got everything from construction sites.)Nice mini.
I remember when this dude krooked grinded the 12 stair at Point Loma High back around 98.
No one asked
MR OrangeMan No one asked you either, dickhead.
Seeing all these people disliking the video I kinda wanted to check out the video myself. Even though I am NOT at all into skating I have respect for the folks who are into skating.
And watching this video, now I appreciate these folks even more.
I dont know why people would click dislike button. I mean come on its only gonna hurt vice.
The only reason i can think is when the music sounds like a dying cow
Finally some real skaters that just tell you how to do it instead of trying to pimp their kits 😂
as much as i love this video, the biggest issue i have is the neglect for landscape architecture in that warehouse space... that loading dock has much more potential than to cover up with a miniramp. that said, awesome instructional video, i love that they break it all down thoroughly, n the ramp looks amazing.
Come build one in Corpus Christi please
ive been wanting to build one for a while now
thank you for the upload
Is anyone able to make a full material list for this? Seriously thinking of trying to make this come spring.
I built this ramp using the following list. I had 2 sheets of 1/2 plywood leftover
and was shy a few 2x4s
(35) 2x4x12
(4) 2x4x10
(8) 2x4x8
(6) ¾ inch ply
(20) ½ inch ply
(9) 1/4 inch Masonite
how much does that all cost
this guy can teach a bear how to ride a bike I swear he's so calm and collective lmao
Billy is the best!
Why all the hate? Anybody who knows anything about VICE knows that they have a deep history with skate culture.
That ramp is sick!
My birthday is dec 13 1990& ive always wanted to build one of these. ill start saving now lol looks expensive but amazing. would be amazing to get it done before the 13th but i doubt it
\
would u guys give out the design plans and material lists ?
Nicholas Loughnan found a website you might be interested in, for plans and materials, although i haven't used it personally to construct a ramp myself( i really want to build a mini, but might start with a 1/4 not sure yet), it tells you what the lumber sizes, grades of ply, costing etc... as well as build plans for all sorts from mini's, ledges, 1/4's, grind rails, to pressing your'e own board. It looks like a lot of time and effort has gone into the site, so it seems legit to me. From Nz here, good luck!
www.diyskate.com/
You can buy those online all day long. I think CCS still carries them.
Love this guy explaining how to I got a.d.d and I understood very well
Does that ramp armor stuff protect the ramp if its outdoors? Approximately how much would it cost to build a ramp this size?
300$
Chuck Springfield this size of ramp would probably run you about 1300, I’m working on one that’s 8 ft wide and it price tag is lookin like it will be around 600-700, personal I would use ramp armor, just use plane old Masonite and cover it with a tarp or something when you’re done
way more just in skatelite its over 900$
thats sick how vice is down with skating! o yah and you guys should do a epickly latered on aron jaws
How long is the ramp??
Love using the impact !
Really entretaining, I dont skate , but I enjoyed this. Good Job Vice!
Does he sound like Steve-O to any one else.
He does XD
thats the first thing i noticed lololololol
Where does it say that in the description that this is what the channel is about?
These guys sure work hard to get their ramp made well!
How Long did it Took to Build the Wohle ramp?
3 years.
When I made my comment, there were as many dislikes as likes.
Glad to see people with a little more common sense balancing things out now.
Man this looks so fun going to do this
great and professional advice thanks
How much did this end up costing excluding tools?
+Mitchel Fife you can just steal with wood from a construction site and rent the tools.
+Tony Roberts Don't do that because someone paid for that wood. You'll never get enough lumber doing that. You won't find enough of the plywood sheathing, and who's to say the wood you steal is gonna be the correct dimensions? And how are you gonna steal and haul a couple hundred linear feat of lumber?
Just buy the lumber yourself don't steal and perpetuate the bad qualities of skateboarders
+Skuareqnot too late
+Anthony Rosado get mad bro
Yo I’m building this tmrw
i built it
😂 congrats, did you use 1/2”plywood?
@@jasperjennings2478 shii i forgot theres a vid on my channel tho
@@jasperjennings2478 i doubt it that seems pretty thick, i think used two layers of 1/4 so it was easier to bend
Can you upload a video of how to freeload a mini ramp to cut down on cost
How much does all this stuff cost in total
Well it depends on where you live. In Tennessee for a 3 1/4 inch thick plywood is about $22, without tax. they used 2 for the side cover, 15 for the base, then an extra 15 for the second layer, then four for the top standing part, and who knows how many 2x4's they used. 2x4"s here are $3.14 for a 6 ft. long one. And the price of the plywood depends on whether it's AB, BC, or CD (expensive to least expensive) and it's basically how smooth it is on each side and they probably used BC so there's that.
This video is so helpful!!!!!! Thank you
I think it would be ILL if they built it to be broken into sections so they can just take it wherever.
"Portable half pipes at your service. We bring em, you shred em!"
Derek Basey Totally. Somebodey order a porta-park?
Hey VICE, no one that watches your channel has the wherewithal to actually build anything other than a cake.
how much would this all cost?
Around 400 for materials. Maybe a little more. Probably closer to 500 if you were making it permanent and using quality fasteners and screws.
+SweetMooch thanks man now I know how much money to earn
same
Thanks! Time to start saving.
tbh treated is always a better choice for outside, the cost is very little difference and is very worth it in the long run.
i plan to build one for my boyfriend as a christmas gift, hope he doesn't die one the first go!
In construction most measurements are in feet and inches. One of the only times that builders use centimetres and metres is on architectural drawings.
I’ve never built anything and I’m building a halfpipe this week lol I don’t even know how to skate one
Rylan Hurley lol ok I guess
can you use Rollerblades on this kind of ramp?
Lol
Only scooters. Haha
+mhks68 no rollerblades suck ride a skateboard
+mhks68 yes you can, this kind of miniramps are great to practice some stylish grinds on Rollerblades
You should sole grind your way into on coming traffic
I constructed some wooden quarter pipes and I don't understand why don't they do the deck and the ramp in one piece
Alvaro Imizcoz Garcia they did a 4’ deck. One sheet of plywood is only 8’. It wouldn’t have gone the full length of the curve and deck.
Great team 👍😊👍
how much does the whole thing cost?
Assuming it's outside, how do you make it waterproof so it doesn't swell and whatnot after too much rain?
Using treated lumber, although more expensive and sizing is slightly different. Masonite sheets to cover and protect the plywood. Maybe throw a few tarps over it when youre not using it?
@@lucknowseven can you like spray it down with a sealant or something? If that's even the right term
RIDERS OF ROHAN!
This Really Helped Me Make Mine
Thx
You guys really used your brains by putting cross members every foot instead of eight inches and doubling every second one so you used the same amount of screws and 2x4 s really smart , can tell you were off skating instead of going to school !!!
I need these skills ASAP
Can you send written instructions with the materials list and the sizes of everything
Why not weld supports whereas you would no longer need holes in the bars? I cant tell you how many times Ive hungup on those holes.
You need to show in more detail coping installation. A little tricky
good ramp but to make it a bit cheaper on the standing area just put a few pallets on insted of every thing else and you dont need to buy as much ply wood.
have you ever try a different section profile for your half pipe than the circular?? like a cycloid for example??
I built a quarter pipe with an oval transition once. kinda sucked.
🙌Very detailed thank you🤙
Why does this guy look like Ned Schneebly from School of Rock?! Hahahah
4:02 dam didnt know that 🤯
How far from the edge of plywood did you start your transition, a foot in from the edge, then start your transition radius? I’ve some start 16”-20” in from the edge of flat bottom. Didn’t know if it really mattered or not?
Thx for helping me dude
Tip on cutting coping. 5:10 I’m almost certian he meant diamond coated blade. Not metal bit. Awesome tutorial though!
Remember me and my 2 friends built the shittiest 10$ quarter pipe. We hit it up 3-4 times and my friends wheels pushed through he fell forward into the coping and toppled the whole thing over haha
Remember no one asked
I got wood watching this!!
Are you kidding me? That floor sloped down HARD.
I'm betting at least 3,000. I havent seen the whole video though. If there is skatelite on it it would be an extra couple grand.
Very cool
i just got a 16ft wide 4ft tall with a 6ft tall by 8ft wide extension. its amazing.
how much
The width of your extension sounds odd... usually they aren't much bigger than 4ft I'd imagine. Either way, sounds sick. I'm curious if you built it... I'd love to build something similar, or more basic, but I have no carpentry experience. Likely would not go well; lots of errors, potentially effecting the end product. (That's right! Correctly used a semicolon there -- I bet most people have never done that before in their life, i.e., on youtube. Suck it, my big gay IT. Then I can suck your it.)
Damn I want a mini-ramp so bad now!
do you guys have the plans for the amount of wood size of wood that sort of stuff
Hi all, very amazing this ramp. I wonder if you share the design, size and thickness of the materials, I and my friends are willing to venture into the building one like it.
Thank you.
what would you guys recommend for a ramp that will be used by bikes, skateboards, and scooters will be using?
the bike would literally destroy the ramp and scooters are all metal so I wouldnt suggest using it on the mini ramp but skateboards are fine/
nope bikes would work just fine, just do some decent stress testing before hand to make sure the supports are properly working, if you arent sure see if you have anyone that is an experienced carpenter and ask them to help you do the supports.
so what about the holes in the coping? how do you cover them up?
Approximately How many 10' lengths 2x4's will I need? Everything else is kinda straight forward!
I built this in my garage using stuff from the dump. It's dope
Clorox BIeach that's so cool
yup
How long did it take
Thank you!
Nice! Wish Vice wouldve just stayed in this general lane.
