- (kampala)History of trade and fashion is not complete in the South-Western part of Nigeria without mentioning the art of Adire. This is a tie and dye process of making cloth using the Indigo plant extract and the now usage of caustic soda and dye to make what is called Kampala.
The Yoruba people were known for their trade and thus travels. Story has it that the tie and dye process is synonymous to cloth pattern worn in Mali.
Yorubas in the diaspora and in Nigeria need to start wearing this because it is Yoruba fabric and culture we need to start speaking our language more than English I wish Yorubas in this generation were more involved in our culture even me myself I want to get more involved in my culture 💖💯
Hello, you are right on the whole diaspora thing. The foreigners want to wear our fabrics, we want to wear theirs, it's such an irony. There is nothing wrong with adire and ankara flooding the New York and Milan Fashion week. I believe we will get there gradually. Thanks for the comment.
Well done Funmi!!!🙌🙌🙌
Adewunmi Adebowale-Alassan please we need to know more on how they tie it.
Good evening Ma’am, I would like to have your contact. I am a fashion designer who is interested in doing some designs. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Nice
Funniest part this place hasn’t changed this is the place that we still use to dye cloth
Yes it has not changed. They only need not so much capital to help them scale up to a level and make it an educational tourism hub. Really very sad to see history dying off little by little.
The drums were distracting the hearing but well done 😍
I to explanation in English
Good👏
Weldone ma, pls I want to learn adire, I stayed at ibadan . Waiting for your reply, thanks.
Good day Erije, I do not make adire i only wrote about them. If you stay in Ibadan, you can go to Nike Arts school where they make adire in Osogbo. There is one there instead of going all thw way to Abeokuta.
Pls ma, why do they hit the fabric with stick
Hello Damilola,
They hit the fabric with the rock to smoothen and compress it it. That is why you have it very flat when you buy it. Once you open it, it comes all out with crease lines. They don't use Iron like we do with the modern fabrics, they use the stick.
I love this. How I can become your student
Hello, I do not make the adire. You can contact Elsat the number in the blog post. Check www.funmiajala.com for the blogpost. The number is there.
