Not a direct parallel, but this reminds me of my Dad's story about how his career got started. He was an officer in US Army Intelligence, stationed near Stuttgart, Germany, at the end of WWII. He quite liked it there (surprising for a Jewish man at the end of that war), and was considering a long-term army career. His fiancée (Mom) was already making plans to join him there.
Then my uncle changed Dad's mind, arguing that in an army career, no matter how high he rose, he would always have people up the chain of command, second-guessing him and making big decisions for him. Ultimately, Dad returned home, married Mom, and they moved to Canada to start a successful business with some seed capital from his two brothers.
That worked out well for me, although had they remained in Stuttgart I'd probably be taller and blond.
Do genetics change based on environment?
