As someone who was following the whole drama closely, I legit think Zane was having a psychotic episode because of his leaps in logic especially (something that you forgot to put in the video that I thought was important) was him saying how Wendigoon following him on Twitter was a scare/intimidation tactic when, in fact, Wendi followed Zane on Twitter because he watched a video of Zane's.

It's late-stage political brainrot from the "everything is political" school of thought. Wendigoon isn't explicitly leftist, interacts with non-leftists/not-leftist-enough people like Shoe and by extension so does his large audience. Therefore in this context, they are Zane's political enemies that need their influence quashed and isolated - hence far-right accusations, guilt-by-assocation and calls to "push out" conservatives - to impose and control a leftist homogeneity over social spaces. And why Wendigoon following him is considered an attack rather than an interest in his own content.
I mean it’s pretty rough up here but it all comes from fear and desperation. This area has been ignored by politicians since it became part of the US. We need more gainful employment here. There is no generational wealth and people out of high school have to work immediately instead of going to college. The lucky ones find a trade program that pays but otherwise people can’t even go to trade school while working 70 hours a week. If jobs paid more up here, especially factory jobs that used to support whole families, it would help. There are government programs to help pay for school but not living expenses. Now how does this tie into bigoted or racist ideas? When people are hurting and can’t meet their needs no matter how hard they try, never seeing their families, they look for the cause. They know it’s not supposed to be this hard and wasn’t in the past. My papaw and great grandfather were blue collar and didn’t make much but made enough to live and the barrier to gain skills wasn’t as high. If you wanted to be a brick layer so,eons would teach you to have more help and pay you a small wage until you were good enough to make more. Now everything is corporate, all the small businesses have been bought up and there aren’t that many more mom and Pop shops incorporations don’t want to pay to train people. Corporations, but more for the short term, whereas family businesses make decisions based on long-term. So anyway, people know there’s something wrong it’s not supposed to be like this. Their aggression just tends to be aimed at the wrong people. Sam has to do with old attitudes, passed down from the Civil War era, but that’s small portion. I know where I’m at the state was split and we had a lot of union supporters in the area, but there are still issues here. There is a ton of propaganda infiltrating the homes of my neighbors and people around me. Bad actors are taking the desperation and anger of people who have been ignoring trampled on and and using it the further their own cause. The people here are being used. they’re being told that the issue is immigrants who are often just as poor not worse off, companies hiring minorities to meet some kind of quota, or planning social programs same there’s a lot of fraud. While there is some, it’s not like what most people around here have been told. And even then that wouldn’t cause the issues. People in power like to stay that way and if they get blamed for the way things are, they’ll lose power. And it’s everyone in government I don’t care if the Republican or Democrat all of them except for maybe a handful or bought out by large corporation and act any interest of those large corporations and not the interest of the average citizen let alone the low income families up here in the mountains. And I hate it because the people here are honestly kind hospitable. This anger is not who they are. So many live in squalor. In falling apart trailers, leaking roofs, rats, and ants all over the place. Rigged up electrical work that would give an electrician a heart attack. Then they see people who live like Kings compared to them telling them how they should live and think. even if they have a point it doesn’t matter because it’s somebody that’s living far better than them that doesn’t know the struggles they go through. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong and they shoulders and responsibility too without easy information is to get these days, but it’s a larger reason why it seems like to the rest of the world. Our neighbors are hateful when we see a completely different side of them. I’ve seen it happen. They’ll complain, yelling at the TV about immigrants or minority, but as soon as they meet someone from one of those groups, and they need help? They give them the shirt off their back. It’s actually weird to watch. It’s like in in practice they don’t act the same way they talk. Now local corruption is totally separate issue and it’s something that the locals Get hurt by as well, but are redirected in the same way as with national politics. I deal with it here where I’m at, but the local politicians use the same fear and desperation to stay in office. I’m fairly active and act activism in general, there’s a lot of causes I care about But I don’t forget where I come from and I hope to start helping the people around here. People here are super smart and capable, but fear the best of us. If their anger was directed at the correct parties responsible for their suffering they could start a massive change for the better in this country. And a lot of people know this and that’s why it’s in their best interest to keep them poor and afraid. Sorry that was long. It’s a completely complex issue and of course not everybody fits this. There are so many people here who are accepting of everybody and love everybody. But I would be dishonest if I didn’t admit that we do have a problem with prejudice. It’s mostly systemic and mostly not individual people. I would say now that most individual people, well, at least the average person, is accepting most everyone. But those involved with the legal system local politics have a major problem with it. I just wanted to explain why the politicians get away with it even if the people don’t align with the same values. Gerrymandering doesn’t help either.

In his video about a witch he grew up in a racist town himself he admits in the video but then lowkey excuses it by adding nuance (no im not saying racism is ok but he explained the history and economics blah blah blah) and all around was more sympathetic but then to say that about where wendigoon is from with no nuance is hypocritical
@@Marynicole830 I don't disagree, but you're overlooking a lot of the reality. Illegal immigrants are direct competition for the mundane jobs these people also see as a way out for themselves and their families. They don't need to be convinced of that, that's the life they live. The same is true of the quotas, which do exist, especially in corporate America where they are given social credit scores which effect investment groups like the people who handle everyones 401k's. It was affirmative action, then it was DEI, now they're transitioning to BRIDGE. These practices have been found unconstitutional, so they just keep rebranding what they're doing. The same government that finds them unconstitutional is also pushing them behind the scenes. And since these programs are designed to impact people who are historically overlooked and thus lack means, these people are once again in direct competition and their competition is being given undue advantages. This isn't even remotely as simple as even you've made it out to be. Which is a far more complex look at a situation than most people are willing to give it. These people are ACTIVELY being oppressed and any bigotry that may exist is being reinforced by the unfair advantages their direct competition are being systemically given. And then you have people like IPOS and the entertainment and media industries all calling them oppressors despite being the most oppressed group within our society.
As someone from the American south, I picked up the bad vibes as soon as the video started- if you’re using redneck as an insult and call everyone in impoverished states (like the Appalachian states and a lot of the south states) racists, then you clearly don’t care about anyone living there and would rather just use buzzwords instead of critically thinking.
Exactly! People have a horrible misconception of the south and somehow boil us all down to 'racists'. Is there racists here? Sure, just like anywhere else in the damn world but we sure as hell don't condone it. It is funny to see people so up their own ass trying to act as some moral superior while they generalize an entire group of people based on their own lack of knowledge. You know, almost like a racist.
@@kiet10as someone also from the South, you can't deny that the people in the South have much more of a reputation of being overtly racist than the West/North. Not all of us are racist, but Southern racism is a different kind of racism and it's more normalized in the rural South than other places. Again, it is NOT justified to assume that everyone/anyone from these areas is racist, but it's also not right to downplay the presence of racism in these areas
@@11darkraven11 I don't really think I'm downplaying it, if anything I'm just annoyed that it is overblown. I'd argue that it isn't normalized either, more prevalent? Probably. That's probably due to there being so many old fucks throughout the area, the younger generation is a lot better even if there's vocal outliers. I'll have to admit I haven't been anywhere North/West for enough time to see any real difference though so I can't speak on that.
@@11darkraven11 While I understand where you're coming from in that it can be obnoxious to hear people buck responsibility, I believe your frustration here is misguided. Were this individual racist, themselves, you may have a point; however, implying that they should take responsibility for the poor behavior of others within their demographic is like going to a random black person and saying that they should take responsibility for gang violence. There are more than enough places to talk about problematic biases that tend to find their way into a given culture. No culture is free of negative stereotypes which "formed for a reason", but to point them out here when the user is making a claim that individuals should not be judged by their culture betrays your own argument, since in this context, it's essentially passing judgement on a culture yourself because they passed judgement on another culture, even if you too are a member of the southern culture you're criticizing.

Wendigoon is one of my favourite creators. He's smart, funny, talks about interesting things, and incredibly kind. This is the guy who turned off his Patreon because he didn't need the money. He turns off donations on his livestreams because people give him too much money and offers to refund them. If there's ever been a guy who deserves the success he's gotten, it's Wendigoon.
I mean, you are probably used to seeing those kinds of people in the liberal circles, if the right leaners never fought, America might still be using slavery they bought from the trans-atlantic slave trade like the countries still using slaves to this day.
hatred holds no flag. A lot of homophobia comes from queer people, most slut shaming comes from women and racism is far more present in non-caucasian ethnicities.
The fact that Wendigoon was willing to accept Zane hates him. And see if he was ever rude to him that could warrant that hate, truly shows Wendigoon's kindness and maturity. And basically 100% disproving Zane's allegations into oblivion

He has said it himself, that Wendigoon's weakness is stories about mercy and forgiveness. Lotta moments in his videos where he cried when he got to such parts. Thus, it's not surprising that the guy is very forgiving and quick to apologize.
I think the graciousness of Wendi's response compared to the callous "I made an oopsie, but not really" tone of IPOS's followup really drives it home. One is a guy who loves telling stories and tries to respect everyone he comes across, regardless of their stance or belief. The other is petty and mad about the success of others, and wanted to tear them down to build himself up. Ain't hard to see who's who

My favorite part of that hitpiece is how IPOS was so paranoid that he immediately assumed Wendigoon following him on Twitter was intended as a threat, or that him leaving a prequel meme quote in the comments section of a transwoman's video meant that he was transphobic. A comment that the creator of said video even responded positively to
Yeah, that's kinda the impression I got; Wendigoon was interested in seeing where a particular content creator's career goes and hopes for the best.. and I get the feeling Wendigoon probably liked some of IPOS's videos and that's why he followed him... after all, they're in the same genre (horror media analysis).
@@SeanStrife Wendigoon in fact did like some of Zane's video, he even said in his long comment on Zane's slander video that his Slenderman video was great and (iirc) in Brandon's video he also explained that's what made him to follow IPOS's channel and twitter. Zane was completely manic connecting the dots like a conspiracist nutjob.
One time Wendigoon ran over me with his car and drove off, he just went to buy me a burger for me to wait until the ambulance he called came, pretty good guy.
For clarification: Zane made the statement that you could compare the hill folk to different groups and his examples where Native Americans, and black people.
i always kind of saw the hill folk as a commentary on lower class white families in the south and the stereotypes a lot of people in this country put upon them. to compare them to native or black people is just crazy
I think you can say they represent oppressed or marginalized groups, but they definitely are the good guys. If anything the lesson of the movie is don't take shortcuts through the middle of nowhere, especially when a gas station guy tells you not to.
@AliceBowie I don't think it's that deep, just a modern version (for the 70s) of the infamous Swanny family. Also, the cannibal, rapist, murdering, and torturing hill folk aren't the good guys.

Thank you! I'm a queer leftist myself, and I can't stand the foaming-at-the-mouth, uninformed assholes like IPOS who constantly go on the offensive, looking for anybody and everybody to tear down. Sadly, it's people like him that get the most attention, and so many people think all leftists are like that. Just like we're often given the impression that all conservatives are hate-filled sociopaths just because the ones who are get the most attention. It's sad that the loudest, most vocal assholes color society's perception and lead to further division. While we as humans may have many vast ideological differences from many other people, we are overall more alike than we are different. Politics do not define us. And I wish more people would remember that more often.
Nope, they speak for you. You are the exception not the rule. Go to any left wing website/subreddit/comment section and observe how they talk about the other side - then compare it to the comment section here or an PJW video. That is the reason most liberals like me turned conservative.
As a native East Tennessean its hurtful to hear someone broadstroke and paint everyone i know and love as willfully ignorant bigots. It speaks to a very classist mindsent. He can't even pronounce Appalachia right. Its like "I'll throw an Apple-at-ch'ya".
And its funny, because those stereotypes are usually enforced by white liberals who have virtually no social experience with people that aren't other white liberals.
I lived my entire childhood in Appalachia, same ratio of bigots as anywhere else really. 100% doesn't deserve to be picked on. I think this happens because idiots love to pick the economically disadvantaged. If you're poor you must be stupid, right?
Shoe on Head nailed it: This guy is a far leftist caricature as imagined by the Daily Wire. Indeed, if I worked for the Daily Wire or Babylon Bee and I'd seen the script for this video I'd have thrown it back in the writer's face as too unrealistic and one dimensional.
As an anarchist most “normal” folks would probably consider me a left wing extremist. And even I think Zane is a twatwaffle. Wendigoon is an internet treasure.
Yeah IPOS is a bad right-wing psy-op. This cartoonish depiction is an affront to reason and logic, so much so that everyone regardless of political position sides against him. It backfired badly.

I dunno about you, but Oompa likes to poke a lot of fun at the fact that he's a gun toting nut in a lot of his videos. He's even done a few skits where he'd just have all of his guns in a pile in the background shot. That being said, it's obviously a joke that Oompa likes to do. I don't agree with him apologizing for shit he didn't do. That only legitimizes IPOS' actual lies against him, and I don't think that should be tolerated. I actually lived in Asheville, where Zane lives [or used to live, no one can find him, I have asked because I am worried he'll harm himself in confused despair.] I met Zane once, for about 90 minutes he was at a monthly meeting of "Alternative practitioners" such as massage therapists, psychics, farmers etc. Zane was curious if any Horror fans were to be found there, but he was also immediately seeking to sniff out the political leaning of every atendee. We mainly refused to speak to/about politics, seeing that as a wedge, not a uniting energy, so we all encouraged him to speak about himself. At the time he had a dayjob that he hated, but wanted to become a critic of horror movies and find a way to make a living at it. He left quickly, since h's socially awkward, tho we all tried to sooth him into relaxing and enjoying himself. No dice. He was not nearly as delusional then as now, but this was literally 5+ years ago. I suspect his audience blowing smoke up his ass ahs inflated his ego massively, so this huge L has to have hurt that swollen Ego badly. I am eager for your coverage, so I'm watching now!
Wendigoon is the exact opposite of what Zane claims. He's one of the most insightful creators on the platform, delving into deep topics and the hidden meanings inside the media he likes. Just because he's more conservative does not mean he only sees horror as entertainment. Quite the opposite actually. His videos are well done and thought provoking and what makes him in my opinion the best creator in his genre and one of the best on RUclips today. He's also incredibly levelheaded and stays away from discussing his own political views in his videos and left a comment telling his fans not to harass Zane after he posted this video. Wendigoon is a great role model for anyone, right or left and I look forward to watching his videos for many more years to come.
Is Wendigoon actually conservative? Being religious doesn't automatically mean you are a conservative. Also he follows people like Bernie Sanders on Twitter which i don't think a person who had conservative beliefs would do
I couldn't care less about someone's political views... Well okay that's not true, I'd obviously love if they agreed with me. But I don't mind when they don't agree with me as long as they havent gone so far that they're crazy.

And I didn't like it because he has nothing to apologize for and I don't think it's a good thing to apologize just to make other people feel better. I feel like envy was a driving force for this whole thing. Like he opens with this huge pity party about how hard it is for him to make a career off discussing horror media. @@SeanStrife people who call mutahar a far-right person are funny, muta has never shown signs of having a far-right ideology other than concerns over privacy and believing in the right to bear arms which by themselves arent even conservative political statments.

I don't agree with some of Wendigoons personal beliefs, but luckily, that is not what I watch his content for. Of his content I have seen he rarely brings it up and doesn't push it on his viewers. We can watch content creators with differing beliefs without it being some conspiracy theory to manipulate the audience. I'd like to think it wouldn't take one comment from a content creator for someone to change their entire political/moral beliefs.
I'm someone who have no particular beliefs and I fully understand and agree with everything Wendigoon said and despite not having a particular faith, I think it's just common sense. I'm not from the US, but I'm conservative and have a huge amount of respect for people like Wenigoon.
Exactly. Wendigoon does a great job with the style content he does; that's why I watch him. His beliefs are his own and it's not like he's shoving them down everyone's throats.
The name “In praise of shadows” is in reference to a Japanese writer, Junichiro Tanizaki’s essay on traditional Japanese aesthetics. Although tanizaki’s writing sometimes had horror elements, his essay is not a horror piece. Also, none of IPOS critiques have anything to do with japaneses aesthetics and I’m pretty sure he’s never read the essay
In Praise of Shadows seems to have fallen into the trap of content-creator-turned-messiah. When you cultivate a following based on your personal worldviews and interpretations, you think you can wield your audience like a moral sword of justice. Except is perception of Wendigoon is so skewed from reality, he ended up backswinging and stabbing himself.
He's not even hot shit to justify that messiah complex. He's just in too deep in his own brain mulching social media circles that bro forgot how the real world worked and it backfired tremendously
The unsubscribe podcast perfectly summed up what happened. Wendigoon is a golden retriever while all of his friends and fans are wolves who will do anything to protect the golden retriever.
The ironic thing about what he stated about the conservative side is you can have both that and make an impactful story with themes and complexity at the same time. By separating the two aspects to make an artificial side to hate, not only do you weaken your argument but also proved that you’re willing to bend the truth to make your argument artificially appealing.
I feel like politcal sphere has gotten so divided that eveyrone heavily involved in it can only see in black and white, us vs them, and if you're in anyway in the middle or hold opinions that are mixed you're just viewed as being an enemy who isn't honest about themselves. IMO, I think it's worse when leftists do this as so many of them will preach about looking at things from different perspectives and being accepting of others but as soon you fall slightly put of the party line you're immediately labeled a hate-monger. Horror is about pushing the boundaries, fear at its most basic is going outside your comfort zone, it’s easy to assume conservatives can’t do it because of that (conserve is literally in the name, it’s the opposite of leaving your comfort zone), but you kinda cut down horror’s potential if you assume that, horror can represent conservative fears just as well as the fears of the left, horror at the end of the day is an art form, and anyone can make art, you can’t say “that’s not art because I don’t agree with the piece’s meaning” (funny enough that happens more than you think)

It ends up being a bit irksome to have basically a whole set of cool things Wendigoon discusses trapped in the "to be sorted" pile because I don't know when he's talking very generally about consensus and when it's his denomination and/or local pop influences that inform him.

The other people I follow that he lashed out at did not mention it, because if Donut, Garrand T, Brandon H or Kent Ballistic said much, the guy would get so much hate it would just make it worse...
But his video really feels like someone ran out of his meds, and just lost track of what he was doing.

@TheHikeChoseMe - I thought he was mostly white, with a grandfather who was a Native American.
I might be misunderstanding but... is he not wearing a Hawaiian shirt himself in that slide, while making this claim?
IPOS making his claim about the Appalachian region as 'white racist country' really displays his own ignorance and biases.
@@Marynicole830This was a long but insightful and worthwhile read, thank you
Also calling him racist is pretty while since he constantly was making content with MistaGG..... who is Hispanic soooo. Pretty sure he wouldn't do that if he was truly racist.
