- Hi guys!
This one took a while but I finally brought you another MHA medley about the Dark Deku arc (I think that’s how Horikoshi refers to him in the manga), “Hired Gun”. It was a fun one. I started doing it as the chapters were coming out, so the first half it's mostly made in Garageband with some small tweaks here and there. Again, I really don't think I should be calling these “medleys”, since for this one I only used two elements from Hayashi’s original score while the other 80% of the song is just me having fun with it and coming up with stuff. This song doesn’t follow the fight Deku and Nagant had to a T, more so it's in disorder until the last part. It really was a fun structure and I’ll break the main points down for you (if anyone really reads this).
- The intro is to represent their encounter, we hear small bits of “You say run”’s main melody and a weird synth progression that introduces Nagant.
- Then I sort of tried to make a theme for Nagant. At the moment I wanted it to sound a bit western, as if she was this lone ranger for some reason and it stuck with me.
- It is here where the song doesn’t quite follow the exact order of events and instead I wanted to explore Nagant’s character a bit. I tried to represent how her deeds would eventually swell up until she loses it with a staccato melody I improvised.
- After that we hear her fan-made theme again but extended, this time as in full villain mode.
- Then we go back to Deku and this new section of the song focuses on him, the vestiges and him using all of their quirks (except the 2nd user’s of course). We cut briefly to Nagant and hear part of her theme again, and we go back with Deku once more. I used the vestiges theme one more time but changed it a bit at the end for a fragment of “You say run” (specifically the version in “Katsuki and Izuku”).
- Then this is where we start following events as they happen in the manga. Deku catches her and the first half of this small section is Nagant’s theme but ends with a fragment of “You say run”, sort of symbolizing them reaching common ground for the first time
- From there I just improvised a cute melody with hints of “You say run” again.
- I put the flashback she had of herself as a kid with a cuter variation of her theme.
- And then… All For One makes a move! Since I used the “The Power of All For One” melody already in “Deku’s Rage”, I wanted to use that ominous choir of the song “All for one” when Nagant explodes.
- We hear for one last time Nagants theme while AFO’s keeps playing and then…that's it….
So yeah. I didn’t expect it to turn out this long but I like it, let me know what you think. Also I tried to pan this song, and I really liked the result compared to my previous ones, hopefully I’m doing it right.
Sorry for the long wait, for this one I had to edit 60 screens in total (that's how i call each still image that appears on the video, since sometimes I would put panels of different pages together for one screen) which meant erasing speech bubbles and having to redraw most of them, and out of those 60 I had to color 18 myself and lets say that I might not be the best nor fastest at it. There were times where I wanted to quit but I really wanted to show you guys what I was taking into account when making this song, especially with how disorganized it is. I shot myself in the foot with this one, but I have come to a decision, probably for the next videos I will only use 2 or 3 screens max, since it really takes a lot of time, hopefully that way I’ll be able to upload songs more frequently.
Anyway, this might be one of my favorite fights. I love seeing Deku using his brains, and how he shows off all the new quirks is just so cool. I really liked Nagant and found her very interesting, she might have made some stupid decisions in her life, but she was still cool. We were robbed from that Nagant Deku team up!

I just saw the episode on this, and as great as it is I still like these so much better, the art style really shows the situation better(like the all for one scene just seemed lame in the episode but this way was truly insidious feeling) and the perfect music for it, like ufotable work

It's almost as if you can sense the tensions from Lady Nagant vs Deku in this theme, fighting at ludicrously fast speeds. It's crazy.
The Dark Deku Arc is my absolute favorite part of the entire series. It is here that we can see Deku truly shine. He displays not only strength, but also incredible intelligence and growth. With no one to turn to, the only person he could rely on was himself. A real shame he returned so soon.

Dark deku would've last longer if the Japanese public supported it. Of course that didn't happen, which is a shame a lot of wasted potential here imo.

I’m already working on another medley (war arc again), I have many unfinished ones for this Dark Deku arc that need adjustments, and I started to make a song for a special someone from movie 3, so stay tuned if you don’t wanna miss any. I will try to simplify the videos so that I can upload more frequently so don't you worry, I’ll…..try. 😁

I personally found the Dark Deku arc to be the most compelling in the series. Its a moment of solitude but also growth in which Deku is being exposed to a hard reality he is trying to fix, but first having to understand and while in this period he isn't acting like his usual cry baby self, but more like a man who has finally crossed that threshold of maturity in which he is deciding to take action.
I always thought smoke screen was white but according to the anime it’s light purple
It's just the passion that I see goes into these videos that amazes me, I'll be honest you've brought more life and immersion into moving, colored manga panels with music than the anime has (at times) with full on animation
The slow-down at 3:54 is masterful, my favorite part has to be between 4:32 to 4:48 with her younger self staring out the window, the tone and the way the panel is edited and moves is extremely immersive and had me so invested emotionally

I love the inclusion of the “you say run” melody! It’s so awesome to here it applied in a way that sounds darker. It’s been a motif in the series’ music for a long time but hearing it here like this feels so different but fits wonderfully
This Fight Scene is gonna be Nuts when it's adapted into the Anime.
Nah man, Studio Bones ruined Deku vs shiggy and this has a higher Chance of being Lackluster too. Maybe if Mha a had a better Studio then this would've looked Crazy in the anime.

Out of all awesome charecters that only lasted a couple of chapters in the manga, Nagant is my favorite of all. She is smart, badass, gorgeous and has one of the most sympathethic backstories of MHA. And since that explosion didn't actually killed her, I truly hope she comes back for ending. Incredible work! Your editing and music choice are *chef's kiss.* 😁

The first half of the song was moslty made with Garageband for iPad, the rest was made with Studio One
I like the concept of a former hero getting disillusioned by the immoral actions of the Hero Commission, but Nagant's motivations make no sense here. She is against the Hero Commission, so she decides to help out a mass murderer by trying to kill a teen hero she knows nothing about. Why!? She didn't like assassinating for the heroes, so she's fine with assassinating for the villains? Everyone keeps talking about how great her character is, but I don't understand her motives at all.
