Very helpful! As others have asked, ensure the cross bar of the spring is positioned under the lip of the rubber silicone stopper. It's harder to get the spring into the holes, but it allows the lid to fully swing back when opening it.
I know this is kind of old now, but the bar of spring is supposed to sit under the silicone stopper. I did the same thing and it didn't work so I looked at where it is on my other lid and that's where it was. It's even harder to put it back together this way because there's more pressure.
