- Created and posted in memory of Chris Squire who passed away June 27, 2015. Progressive music lost a great treasure, but his musical legacy will live forever.
From Wikipedia:
"On the Silent Wings of Freedom" is a song by Yes. It appears on the 1978 Tormato album. The song
was never released as a single.
The song is the final and longest song on the album. On this particular track, as with most of
the album, Squire sends his bass through his foot pedal controls to give it a more harmonized
sound. Thus, the bass line had a different tonality to it from previous albums, yet was still
able to retain his signature "growl". Though the album itself is considered to be one of Yes's
weakest, most Yes fans, whether they like the album or not, favour this one song, as it is the
closest track to other fan favourites like "Close to the Edge", "Heart of the Sunrise" and
"Awaken".
Lyrics:
On the silent wings of Freedom
Where I offer myself midst the balancing of the Sun
On the winds of Celestial Seasons
That would carry me on, midst the balance of being one
On the dream of our love Eternal
That will eventually bring our living once more with you
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we come with sound
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we go around and round
On the back of your forty-second screamdown
Do you choose to be lost midst the challenge of being one
On the flight of regardless feelings
As you hurtle to fear midst the challenge of everyone
...
On the darkest night so painful
Do you hunger for love midst the torture of being one
On the passing light of Easing
Have you seen you inside midst the being of Everyone
To the common goal of Freedom
Where we offer ourselves midst the balancing of the Sun
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we come with sound
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we go around and round
Chris Squire is, in my estimation, the greatest rock bass guitarist that ever lived or who is ever likely to live ----Rest in Peace my Brother--
Thank god for Chris Squire Alan White , Jon Anderson , Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman for outstanding music.
You used capital letters for the band members’ names, but a small ‘g’ for God. Why can’t people get this right? Use the capital ‘G’ for THE ONE GOD who created you, and the small “g” for all false “gods.”
Another benefit of this track is the understated but outstanding work of Alan White.
Bruford was amazing...but Yes didn't hire a schlub !! Alan White was a fantastic drummer !!
Good call
amazing amazing amazing drumming YES
yes alan was brilliant and i have always loved his drumming best for yes,
Regarding the eX Yes Led Zeppelin (XYZ) band (Plant in vocals, Chris Squire in the bass and vocals, Alan White on the drums and Jimmy Page on the electric guitar..., you'll find the fistful of songs they did without Robert Plant. Just Squire singing. Perhaps my 2 combos (Led Zeppelin plus Robert Plant solo) & Yes mix will help to imagine how it would've been. Behold in awe:

For pure music quality and originality Yes is the greatest rock band.
Progressive rock ever
Ladies and gentlemen Chris Squire and Yes the greatest show on earth.
Such a ground breaking musician. Chris took the Bass Guitar to unheard of levels.
I am blown away every time I hear this song as well as many, many, many others he played on.
RIP Fish...

It truly amazed me how during the late 60's through the 70's could produced so many very talented musicians in various supergroups...I grew up listening to all these fantastic bands that coloured my life..Jon Lord, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks, Ken Hensley on the keyboards..Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, Toni Iommi, Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, Rory Gallagher, Pete Townshend, Steve Hackett, Martin Birch, Mark Farner and many more on guitars..bassists- John Paul Jones, Geezer Butler, Chris Squire, Roger Waters, Greg Lake, John Enwhistle, Jack Bruce, Gary Thain...drums- John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ian Paice, Carl Parlmer, Simon Kirke, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Carmine Appice, Michael Shrieve...vocals- Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, David Byron, Ian Gillan, David Coverdale, Jon Anderson, Terry Reid, Steve Winwood, Mick Jagger, John Mayall, Freddie Mercury, Ozzy Osbourne, Roger Daltrey and many more..and of course the four members of The Beatles...these are/were the people that made music irresistable..they mastered their instruments in their own style and the chemistry within the bands that made their musics so intriguing...
Yes and probably like me you took it for granted and thought it would go on forever , how wrong I was but now in my 60s I more than ever appreciate how great our musical awakening was 👍
Beautiful tribute! This was one of Chris Squire's favorite Yes songs and one of mine too. Great choice. Thank you!

When I heard that Chris had died, I put this on the turntable and turned up the volume.
Great song...YES the Best Progresive Rock band..Nice performance...Alan great drums play for a complicated song...outstanding musicians and great arrangement...
This music has inspired me my whole life,I’m 61 years old ,and this master piece always reminds me when I was a young lad
Mr. Christopher Squire on lead bass guitar.
what the fuck is LEAD bass guitar? that means there is a rythym bass player in the band we never knew of? what a stunned comment
On the album sleeve, Squire is credited with playing "Harmonised Rickenbacker bass" on this track, which I think meant he was running the signal through an Eventide Harmoniser, which wasn't part of his pedalboard but was rather a studio unit. It also sounds to me like he's using a bass wah-wah. I know I bought a Thunderbolt bass wah pedal back then to try and get that sound on my instrument.
I was checking out his set-up at a show one time and was amazed to see 3 cry baby pedals daisy chained together.
I always loved this track I remember buying this at the KMart in Fairhaven, Ma first record I bought with my own money
Bruce Ifer That was Good money spent!
That's great! I randomly came across this cassette in a bargain bin at Penny's or Sears! I was like - wow!
Alan has never been less than brilliant. Sense of humor also; he enjoys teasing people.
yes yes lol he is.
A Masterpiece
I HAVE NOT HEARD/LISTEN TO THIS TRACK IN EON'S...
THIS BRINGS BACK ALOT OF MEMORIE'S...
Beautiful tribute, thank you. RIP Chris Squire, we shall not see the like of you again.
Very nice tribute. CBS nightly news remembered Chris Squire last June.
Stunning work absolutely love this thank you so very much for e
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
RIP Fish. The only bassist the band ever needed. That's why he appears on every album.
It was also his Band :) he taught himself to play music which is the part I like, because I did it myself! Ended up playing a 4001 too..
But I hadn't any English friends, alas.
Squire could play the music he heard inside, which is the greatest thing in any art form, in my opinion, to put a part of yourself, your perceptions, into something, and it takes a lot out of oneself, just learning the craft by yourself. Take care from Minnesota, USA 🌲❄️
As always, vzqk50HD, your video with Roger Dean visuals is fantastic and highly complimentary to Yes' music! Thanks for providing.
Great job...again, V. Squire is such a beast on this one.
pop gun that riff by squire is so good, one of my favorite riffs of all time, the very back bone of one of yes' trippiest ethereal songs. i've always loved most of this album, very strange and very different from anything else at the time. yes really were masters of writing a song in multiple parts like a symphony.
My Favorite Yes song and the "Fish" makes that Bass Growl !
The Fish, That is one bad ass Song. One of my all time favorites!
Alan White phenomenonal. RIP

Thank You, V. This means a lot to all of us.
On Silent Wings to the Great Silence...where everything sings.
Wonderful!!
Very nice David. Chris Squire, RIP.
I miss bumping into NuNu and Richard all the time!!!.........
What? A Uriah Heep album cover for YES? Of course! I bought my first Yes album about 1972 because Roger Dean had done the excellent album covers for Heep. They are STILL my 2 favorite bands.
Muchas gracias por escuchar tan bellas melodías de su bajo, el cual estará en su viaje eterno respondiendo sus preguntas celestiales, que vivas por siempre Chris .....
Great song GREAT video, classic group !!! Thank you for sharing !!!
Thank you so much, VZ... Your homage to Chris with another great Yes song set to detailed graphics. I'm glad to have subscribed.

This song is inspired!
Glad you're still around vzqk50Hd, love your video's when I see them.
Ok.so Angels made music. Incredible.
LOVE IT
Amazing,,,, thank you for your insight
YES, they did.
You make the best videos! Thanks!
Nice!
Though the album itself is considered to be one of YES's weekest gimme abreak IT IS SACREGLIOUS to use the word week and YES in the same sentance shame on you Wikipedia
I don't care what wiki says I love this album
same here and have all albums
I don't know why fans consider this to be a weak album. There's the shorter song format.. OK. But every one of those tracks is brilliant in my opinion. The arrangements, performances & song writing continue to be next level. I love this album.
Thanks so much for doing this
Tormato is The best "Yes" album
Definitely top 3...
Tales...
Relayer
Tormato
siete pazzi non dite cose per forza per piacere
I wonder, have you ever or could you make one of these BRILLIANT videos for Uriah Heep's Magician's Birthday? I don't think I've ever seen a video for the song and I would LOVE it if you did it in the style of these Yes videos that I absolutely Love! Thanks again!
Does anyone know what string synth Rick is using on this and the rest of Tormato? It's really quite nice.
It was probably a Birotron. It was intended as the successor to the Mellotron but was railroaded by the introduction of polyphonic synthesis. It was invented by David Biro & championed by Rick Wakeman, who was known to have used it on Going for the One, Tormato & his solo album Criminal record.
Tormato has some absolute Gems...Would have loved to hear them record it without all the individual producers and their egos clashing like volcanic continents...would have been SUPER amazing rather than just another STUNNING Yes album..I will take this 10 times over Magnification, Union or that shit they made with the "other" wannbee Yes singers.
Drama is great tbh
tremendoo!
Excelente homenaje ,póstumo a Chris Squire. thank you David ¡
There is nothing weak about Tormato.
Ummm well, in this case I agree with Steve (Howe)...who felt it was unpolished, unrehearsed and pieced together because it was recorded separately in different places. Remember? I personally love the album. He just felt it couldve been much better.
@@jeffturner6698 Lol Unpolished, unrehearsed and pieced together. Not that we'd notice.
Yay to that!
Mozart of the bass.
Картинка- то от URIAH HEEP... Roger Dean тоже работал с YES... То,кто выкладывает -начинай думать...Хотя ,это глас одинокого в пустыне...
I know it's Roger Dean's art work but why a Uriah Heep album cover for Yes?
that's a Uriah Heep-cover comin' in at 04:57 :-)
martin nitsch the wizard?
i ve noted it myself ahhaahah :-)
Also the great artwork of Roger Dean
Budgie at 2:10 or so.
First time listen Yes, but the drum at the beginning makes me confuse and exicite at the same time. any u tell me what kind of beat at the beginning, 5/6?
Thảo Trang Lưu It’s plain 4/4 like the following. Alan just has some special accents and omissions. Before the vocals enter the rhythm changes to 3/4.
Excellent. I love your work. Do you ever do ELP videos?
Rachel Payne Good question. I love ELP and yes, I have. Just search "ELP vzqk50" on youtube and you will easily find them.
Thanks and I did. BTW, love your videos
Nice guy, I should add.
Alan did a great job on this amazing bass line.....bass and drums are amazing, the rest is so poor.....
I respect your opinion. But just for the record I disagree I have to disagree.
Yes music BUT the cover picture is from Demons & wizards by Uriah Heep
"Y la Virgen pasó haciendo ala delta"
Any Argentinean folk that read this know what I mean. 😉
Roger Dean's Budgie "Squawk" album work 1:49
Is there an image from the "Drama" album in there? (07:10)
I see some album art from some other bands here like budgie’s squawk at 1:47 and demons and wizards by Uriah heep ant 4:50
What's up with the Demons and Wizards cover?
That’s Uriah Heep’s Demons and Wizards cover.
That is Rodger Dean's artwork.
Sacreligious, is a good word to use!!!!!!!.........
That’s weird…..a Yes tune with the cover of Uriah heaps demons and wizards album lol
サムネ悪魔と魔法使い?
Dramaturgy!!!!!
