Paul Keating hops into the Opposition front bench and the Fairfax press (1995)

- Classic Keating: lacing his answers with derision and invective like a boss. From memory this was John Howard's fourth Question Time as "recycled" Liberal leader, and his second time facing the PM.
In his second term, Keating introduced "Ministerial" Question Times - whereby he, as PM, was rostered to attend only two days a week. He shrugged off Howard's cries of "part time Prime Minister" and - citing the roster - didn't show up for Howard's first day.
Proceedings in the House of Representatives broadcast on ABC TV, Australia, 1995.
Note Howard’s smirk, raised eyebrows and head nod of agreement with Keating.
Two warriors and the talking knee
Because deep down Howard and Keating have a respect for one another, even though they were political adversaries. Plus Howard knew Keating knew his shit he earned his right to be both Treasurer and Prime Minister.
@@clevelandwilliams5922 mmmm, I can't see how Keating would or could have any substantial reverence for Howard , at least not beyond a civil measure. Howard was always the ultimate 'low altitude flyer'. He wasn't remotely in Keating's league.
@@user-cg7uv3mh9f I agree but I’m saying as political adversaries
@@clevelandwilliams5922 point taken though I still don't think he was in the same league.
The best treasurer and PM Australia ever had you only get one PJK a generation and the Australian voter squandered the opportunity.
Keating was a viper that could absolutely dismantle the opposition.
Dismantle them, eat them for breakfast and turn them to shit before lunch.
We need Paul back.
I like it when they show the opposition when PK is talking. Its like they got front row seats to some good entertainment. Often they are laughing along even when he is chastising them!
Kim Beazley always looked like he was enjoying himself when Keating was speaking.
We need more Paul Keatings!
Too right, mate.
The look on Howard's face whenever Keating is having a go at Costello. 🤣
Bloke in the gallery made more sense than the Opposition front bench
Costello was gutless. He wanted everything handed to him on a plate. If he had to work for something he’d hide in dark corner and sob.
Hahaaa, poor old yellow Costello, @Peter Trezise. I try to not sling off at the mob on the other side too much... (it ends up going around it circles) ...but there's no doubt about Peter Costello, is there? All tip and no iceberg.
@@JemClarke I agree about the slinging off but sometimes they deserve it. Howard’s government was weak and divisive. I don’t think Australia has fully recovered. The gun laws are the only positive to come out of it.
Costello lead the surplus that enabled all of Australia to coast through the 2008 financial crisis, unfortunately subsequent finance ministers have thought it better to decimate that budget surplus so we’re back not only to square one but square 4! Generational theft he has called it - never a truer word said. Where our kids and grandkids will be saddled with debt making it even harder for them to have that now elusive ‘fair go’! The middle class being decimated under the strain of ever increasing taxes. Our governments enable and support (it seems) the ever increasing gap between the so called 1%’s and the middle class through ever increasing bad policy with no accountability. When will this rubbish end?!!
Expects witty Keating retorts.
Gets exactly what I wanted.
Keating was right about that wet blanket albo. I wish we had this caliber of leader in ALP. World class
Ahh god help em, he's PRICELESS ! The original Coolhand Luke, never misses a beat or flinches, I love it!
Low Altitude Flyer. Classic comment from a champion
Keating just spews nasty bile. Not sure he would be lauded for his bile today. And nor should he be lauded
@@madonnawaugh3471 Nasty bile? LoL It's down right polite compared to the likes of Abbott, Bullet Slowmo, Despot Dutton and the likes! Get a grip.
Masterful work, none better, with a spirit of mutual respect - at least in public it seems!
Paul is a legend.
Gold!!! How good was Keating.....
“It’s a real mixed grill” lol
Sometimes I wish the Speaker would just allow interjections if they can see the Prime Minister or the Member speaking is interested in interacting with it.
Proceedings were as relaxed as they've ever been with Stephen Martin as Speaker, at Keating's behest. Interjections made it into Hansard and at times Paul invited them and responded. Many formalities such as "addressing all comments through the Speaker" were swept under the carpet. Unfortunately the Opposition used it as a tactic to call Parliament under Keating a "rabble"... and we've never seen the likes of it again.
@@JemClarke I met Stephen Martin once when I was studying at Wollongong. You can tell that he didn't stay up late at night studying the Standing Orders, but I think he had a real John Bercow style commitment to fair and open debate, albeit very much without the Oxbridge vocabulary.
“Those on my left might not give lines for the Prime Minister to respond to”.
Oh no good Sirs, do go on.
Please.
(Yes I’m back, but I’ve just started the Keating book by O’Brien....so good).
( Just in case you haven't seen this, Delique Scence: ruclips.net/video/uh-4KIQlOqM/видео.html )
Brilliant mate. More of the same please!
Have you noticed an increase in views of your compilation (ruclips.net/video/0JcNlese0ig/видео.html) over the last couple of weeks, J A ?
I reckon the 25th anniversary of Keating's defeat might've generated some interest in looking back.
Also I'll add a link to your compilation in my "end screens" playlist... if that's OK?
25 years of mediocrity...do they even argue policy like this in Parliament these days??
@@brookt3497 Nope. They play safe and bland and... mediocre, as you say.
Julia Gillard as Acting PM had my hopes high. Unscripted and unindoctrinated, she was real, spontaneous, spirited and good value... until the image makers got to her as PM, smothered her guile and veiled her personality from the public.
Turnbull was his own man, too, 'til the "cautiously bland" brigade got to him.
The tall poppy syndrome has no place in deciding who should be our nation's advocate.
Caution and "modesty" are enemies of coming out ahead of the pack. In a world of competition between nations, why wouldn't we want the most accomplished, determined, confident, bold and clever to captain our team?
It's a crying shame. Maybe we really do get the pollies we deserve, if we eschew conviction and guts in the people we choose to represent us, or prefer them to mute their personalities and self-belief?
:(
@@JemClarke Good point, I hadn’t thought of that. Views went from 25k to 110k in under a couple of weeks. Thanks for that, much appreciated. I will do same with yours when I manage to navigate RUclips!
Events of 2007 and Costello’s gutlessness to challenge proved Keating right… he was a low altitude flyer
He was on the money about the low altitude flyer comment. After the 2007 loss, Costello squibbed the leadership and didn't want to do the hard yards as opposition leader.
Gee wiz we love it when PK hops into em.
Wow. How much has the Labor Party changed? All politicians for that matter....
Quick on his feet
Paul is an incarnation of God.
If the member in the gallery was yelling at Costello, kudos to them
We need this/PK 2P0 today,
It's good when a member of the gallery erupts
Keating was absolutely brilliant in parliament. The liberals were rabble!
What was the deal with the guy in the gallery!?
ORDAH!!
Only one PJK,"mixed grill" classic
Those hydraulic leavers😂🎉
How funny that Costello would go on to run Fairfax, and PK is still right - "nobody's running Fairfax"
What was that guy yelling about?
What was that guy on about at the start?
Perhaps a protestor opposed to the new limits on logging old growth forests in Tasmania...? No idea, but I think Parliament was blockaded by logging trucks around that time.
What was the bloke in the public gallery yelling about?
I love how alot of this mob can joke about a man who is at his wits ends about a topic that has probably been mishandled... Cold.
To put this into perspective, morrosons anti democratic government would use the "I move that the member be no longer heard". So this question would never have been answered.
Anyone catch what the heckler said?
"RABBLERABBLERABBLERABBLERABBLE"
OARHDAIGH
Basket weaving lefties and reganomics right wingers …. A classic Keating put down!!
Time to bring back Peter Costello.
0:53 I’m guessing that’s a separated Father shouting from the gallery. Shouting at those responsible for his distress.
Smug smirks all around, especially on Keatings’ side.
For those who like Paul Keating and his wit, did you enjoy the 'recession we had to have' and the high interest rates he allowed, or his banana republic statement? What P M or treasurer advocates those things?
"Banana Republic" was a warning. Keating gave the central bank independence and had no ability to dictate interest rates in 1990. The recession did, as Keating suggested by his comment, burn the endemic problems out of the economy and usher in three decades of resilience and low inflation growth.
You mean how bad it was for like a few months, Did you enjoy the fuckup that is known as the Fraser years which were far worse then the few months under keating?
Or did your murdoch programming forget that and your old age too?
