James, I think it’s great you mentioned counting. It’s probably the one single practice element that has and continues to help me improve. Unfortunately, very few RUclips instructors even mention it. And, it’s understandable, counting (out loud at first) is unnatural and awkward. It’s absolutely miserable the first 100,000 bars then it just sucks for the next 100,000 bars 😅. But, if you continue, it will get to the point where you start to internalize it and you will just do it. Count everything; strumming rhythms, licks, riffs, whatever. An additional benefit of counting (especially out loud) is that it will slow your playing down so that you are practicing with less mistakes and that it helps you identify any mistakes more quickly. Unrelated, but I will plug James’s Barre Chords Made Easy course. I credit it with significantly improving my technique, strength and endurance with barre chords. Thanks James!
Great lesson i am struggling with strumming . The way you teaching is extremely helpful. When you and wife were doing the lesson , 5 love songs tutorial your wife strumming was helping alot. I strum to hard with pick and i am using my fingers more lately. Thank you for all you do for beginners. ❤😊
Thanks James. I’m an older beginner and want to get better. Simple and slow is exactly where I need to go. Strumming is so important and vital to making progress. Thank you for sharing your experience with me in my guitar room. The personal touch of talking right to the guitarist as a beginner gives me confidence I can do this with you.
Hi James Thank you for this lesson. After 2 years in still finding strumming hard to get rhythm, I even went to a guitar teacher but he doesn't use a pick so that didn't realy help me , but this lesson made more sense to me and made me sound a bit better . I think my problem is I was strumming all strings for say a G chord which made it sound to robotic . You make it make sense Thank You so much
