- Last week Patreon sent a heads up to creators that we’ll be required by law to start charging sales tax on some patron pledges starting July 1st, 2020.

We understand that any change can be daunting and this one is about tax - no one’s favorite subject. Patreon has built tools to help you fill out your taxes and in this video I'm going to show you how to complete your taxes with a live example. I'm going to complete my own taxes on Patreon for my funk band scary pockets live.

jack, please work on your patreon app instead of this stuff. You have a very poorly designed product lacking the most basic communication options. it really needs to be worked on
I lost 40% of my patreon earnings because of this update. And it still hasn't recovered. Thanks a lot Jack Conte.
Suggestion: When you're going from one tier to the next tier up.. have it auto-populate your benefits, the tax mapping and weightings from the previous tier. So you only have to add in the new benefit(s) and, well, re-adjust things a bit.
Really great it shows ur dedication to the creators on ur sight and it’s genuinely inspiring, I hope to soon be on patreon and it makes me trust them even more
Jack, you say "we're here for you" and "creators first" but I asked on twitter if I could get an idea of the logic behind the automated script and got a big fat nope. I've been with Patreon for over SIX YEARS and I'd really like some congruency behind hearing that they care and seeing that they actually do. Please!
Thank you very much for the video! I've had already added the sales tax settings, but was unsure if I did it completely right. Your video proves me that I did, so less worries about it.
Great you took the time explaining it, I might even ask my patrons which of them just support me because they like my stuff and who do it more for the sneak peeks I share. That might make the percentages more favorable for them too instead of the 50-50 percentages I have now.
Out of all the notifications I've seen about updating for tax, this is the one which inspired me to finally sit down and manually update my settings, cos my patrons' reasons for supporting me are as close to 100% cos they love me as someone can be without actually being there 😅. That is very, very useful. I hadn't touched the whole sales tax thing yet because my current patrons already get hit with sales tax I don't think they should be hit with, but with any luck, maybe I can start saving taxes for them too. Thank you for the video, and for the tools!

This new tax tool sounds quite nice. Just a small suggestion to improve the UX of the "Adjust benefit value for sales tax" section: non-edited fields should be automatically computed so the total would match 100%.
I’d love to hear what patreon is having to do on the backend for reporting. It had to be a huge hurdle to overcome. Great job dealing with this hurdle that was thrown your way

Hi and thanks a lot for your great "Patreon" tool and for being totally open about everything that happens. All my support I receive without any benefits, my patrons just support my work generally. So I have just ONE tier (with the title "No Paywalls" by the way). So can I just add ONE benefit "General Support" to that tier and will that benefit be valued 100% automatically? An added tip (until they get it fixed): use percentages for items in your tiers that are divisible so you can use whole numbers only. In other words, an item in my $1 tier of 50% will not work for my $4 tier because the percentage would have to be 12.5%, which is not "legal" in Patreon's system. Whole percentages ONLY! I was able to fix this by making the book value (I'm creating a book) in the $1 Tier 48%, which means 24% in the $2 Tier and 12% in the $4 Tier. I hope this helps. Also, if you get into this and cannot see numbers in the little data-entry boxes, widen your browser window until the boxes widen enough to see the numbers. Until you do this, all you will see in the edge of a percent or paren symbol, even if you click on "make percentages equal" recommended option. Good luck!

Didn't realize you're the Scary Pockets guy! :-D I've been having a terrible time focusing since quarantine started and I keep adjusting my Patreon settings and thinking I did it right and then I get an email that I didn't finish it. Have all sorts of personal stuff going on in our family and I'm trying to give this my full attention today.

Yes, sure. Something similar happened a few years ago. the recommendation that we notified the patrons, I do not think good idea.
@Citizen 1482608 : What's even worse is that most people are donating their money to people like you and donations can NOT be taxed in America or Australia. Patreon has no idea what they're doing and are NOT sticking up for the creators or the supporters.

If they're donating to you, they shouldn't have to pay tax. I mean, that's how it is Supposed to work in America and now they're trying to tax our pledges which is literally donations to the creator.

I offer news, and in my state news papers are not supposed to be taxed but there is no option for that on Patreon benefits. I've struggled for 3 years to keep a steady 20 patrons. They are my loyal fans. I fear they will leave soon too. Question will patreon send give us reporting on tax that has been collected? How do we integrate into our taxes?
How much money should I put aside for paying back taxes or does patreon automatically take out taxes? Also how much does patreon take out of my money? Please explain in very very simple forms! Also can I do tax write offs ?

Very curious to see how someone may be handling things that you give out as a result of supporting at a higher tier. For example - $5 tier -all benefits from first tier with the exception of a handmade thank you card. Does this warrant "exclusive content" or does this fall still within general support? I guess this is the beauty of this whole thing is we get to decide as creators, but I'm stumped on if i should be adding an additional benefit, as it's "other stuff". Thanks Jack for this video!!
I don't understand. I'm not selling ANYTHING. I just want folks to support me. They get nothing of monetary value from my page. I just offer them the opportunity to send me money. There are no benefits, so I don't understand what to do. WHAT DO I DO?
This is what I'm talking about too. These are DONATIONS. You can't tax donations in much of the world. USA and Australia certainly don't tax donations so why are our supporters going to be charged tax on a donation?

You might want to re-consider charging GTS to Australian Patreons and Pledgers. GTS is for Goods and Services, NOT Donations, Gifts, and Pledges. Australians are protected by law and you might find yourself with a few backlashes and a few red faces at Patreon HQ. Up to you... forewarned is forearmed... but if you try to get GTS on Donations from Australia... good luck with the charge backs.
the laws on what is taxes and how it is taxed will vary state to state and country to country. They are aware of that, I'm sure.
America doesn't charge taxes on Donations either. Patreon is NOT giving us an option for donations which is what most pledges are.

If you "listen to your creators", remove the requirement of using Vimeo or RUclips to post videos. I love Patreon. It's SO much better to use as a creator over OnlyFans....but this third-party video service requirement is bogus. I hate owing another company money for posting directly to my fans. ALSO..... Give us the ability to CHANGE tier prices WITHOUT having to create a new one and delete the old one. It's SO confusing both to us creators and the patrons.

Pamela ! It’s sooo unnecessary. On onlyfans, not only can you change the prices at will, but you can even offer “campaigns” and discount users for a specified period of time.

Heya, I'm very new to Patreon and new into freelance and I'm still struggling to understand what are the benefits for a creator (like me) when a patron pays the additional tax ? What does it do ?
I think I understand well how to set it up now thanks to your video, but I don't understand what that does for me to have my patrons pay taxes ? Does it affect my taxes in the end ?
For me, I mostly think my patrons would chose Tiers to support me. Sure they'd get extra content by picking a higher tier, but they'd still chose to do so to support me, does that mean I should only indicate "general support" if I believe 100% goes towards supporting me or should I also list the exclusives they get regardless of their desire to simply support me ?

Not blaming Patreon here, but setting up tax percentages and values for such small support items like early access and ad free content feels incredibly petty and ludicrous. What a total waste of everyone's time. Tax authorities are pathetic. Unless someone is earning mega bucks from Patreon, what is the point. Thanks for the video anyway, it was actually helpful.
I imagine more options to automatically calculate the percentage would be useful. Even you had trouble adding up everything. So if it automatically adjusted the other tiers based on the new weight you gave one, that would save creators some headache.
Also, if there was a way to add an exact dollar amount that a benefit is worth. Such as "Trading Cards are worth $5 of the pledge", and then it can automatically calculate that and let you know what percentage is remaining to distribute.

Wait... You'll "collect sales tax on your behalf..." I do not make enough money as a business to be required to collect sales tax, and I am *not* registered to collect sales tax, so if it's on my behalf... That would mean I can *easily* just click a, "you don't collect sales tax for me as I don't collect sales tax", or... "I am collecting sales tax myself, and it is included in what I collect..."

Sale tax on what is basically a donation is ridiculous and this makes me want to use Patreon even less regardless of if it's the companies fault. You all roll over too quickly and support crooks who just want their hands in your pocket.
