Taking a Look at Monster Drop X-Treme

  • One video? Nah let's do two for the 10k milestone! I was originally going to do a large video looking at several " ball droppin' " games. I couldn't locate everything I wanted to talk about, but I was able to find several scuffed copies of the games I wanted to cover, and a few "acceptable" ones.
The original Monster Drop is still on the table, I'm going to continue looking for one but every copy I've ran into drops the balls at such arbitrary times, it becomes a guessing game of a drop timing + offset. Which is funny, but not a fair representation of the game. I'll continue taking a look for other ball droppers such as Slam-A-Winner and The Prize Aquarium.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, understands that the green one adds balls to the total and the blue one drops the total bonus balls. I have taken SO MANY tech calls to this game for that. We even have a sticker at about eye level explaining this.

One of my favorite arcade memories: I was chatting with my friends near a monster drop and the game just started spitting out a shitload of tickets! I had accidentally hit the button, and the game happened to have an unspent credit, and the ball went cleanly through the Jackpot hole.

I can't believe I am just noticing how the drop bonus ball hole is slightly smaller than the other ones. Like, it doesn't have an elevated rim, but it is noticeably harder to shwoop the ball directly in with timing or for it to just randomly roll in.

When I was younger I played a bunch of small monster drop. That machine broke a LOT and I had to keep bugging the attendant to fix it...
Though it wasn't like, 1.50 a play. It was one coin per ball and it was like 100 coins for $20 or something

A mall near where I lived as a young adult had slam a winner in their arcade. I frequented that arcade just to play it because it was the only game I could consistently jackpot. I've been watching this series waiting for you to get to it. I'm pretty sure the mall still has it today.

8:06 can you cover those "roulette wheel" type of games some time in the future? There was an arcade I frequented that had a game where you had to line up with a spot on the wheel to get the jackpot, and it seemed fair but was just REALLY difficult to get right. The thing was the token had to land completely in the space or else it was a loser 1 ticket. There was one where the size of the regions corresponded to the value (jackpot was like exactly token size, 3 tickets was huge, 10 tickets was decent) and another where it was basically all jackpots (either 50 tickets or jackpot, all essentially of equal token size). I also played the coin dozer variant you showed there, but that was when I was traveling.

This was my favourite game throughout my childhood. I had the minor jackpot down to a science where I could land it up to every other play. I landed the mega jackpot once in my life, through an entire fluke. The regular monster drop was the more common one over here in the UK with the odd X-Treme one in the larger arcades in Brighton's pier for example.

I was very happy that I got 1,000 tickets, and I’ve spent most of my tickets on an 12” Sonic Sticker Bomb plush (it was for 1,000 tickets).
That was the most amazing thing I’ve done on my birthday.

6:03 yeah happens when not enough balls are loaded in the cab (these can break down so often that sometimes the techs don't take the time to put the back on when they are done working, and balls can literally fly out that hole), or when some are stuck on the board so there't not enough balls circulating to fill the conveyor.
only time I've seen a monster jackpot is when someone pried the game open, and reached with their hand, sliding their card and triggering the monster jackpot before the ball being dropped could trigger anything. Also, the mystery value is illegal in certain states and there is version that covers that hole. I don't know where you are in the world, but I would HIGHLY recommend seeking out a Round1.

Alright, I played Slam a winner extreme and classic Slam a winner
TL:DR: Slam a winner Extreme is just a bigger version original Slam a winner.
So, slam a winner is a Monster extreme drop, but it don't has mystery value(maybe other variations have it, but mine don't), and drop X balls(so no drop balls, or add balls). Just a JP, or two credits(+1 ball that you can time). Also, there is a ring on 100 and JP. I believe a roof for original slam a winner JP 250, and extreme JP is 1000. Also, exterior of extreme is purple, white, and green

We used to have a machine like this in the arcade I worked at. Every single play paid out, but the gains were pretty awful and they didn't have a jackpot. I didn't play it because I didn't feel like it paid out enough tickets. Little kids seemed to like it though. Ours was $0.50 and you got three balls for that.

... You probably won't find one of these around, because I haven't seen one in almost thirty years, but my local place used to have this bowling game that had metal bowling pins suspended over a wooden board and you slid a metal puck across the board to try and hit as many as you could. The game rules were exactly like bowling without a gutter, but played like shuffle board. The one I played gave tickets based on your score, but I also saw a lot that were just 'play for fun'.
I keep kicking myself in the ass, someone an hour away was giving a broken one for free years ago and I just didn't have the time to try and get it. After I looked it up online and I guess they're not only rare, but out of production and very expensive. Sorry, I can't remember the name.

Thus game is fun but the xtreme version is definitely worse than the small version. I notice the dropper has more issues with consistent on all Monster Drop machines compared to Slam A Winner which has a decent amount of consistency ESPECIALLY Slam Xtreme, the consistency on that game is far and away the best of the ball droppers. One that kinda failed that people dont talk about is Monster Drop Chaos which turns the jackpot into a drop bonus ball hole and the only jackpot is the Monster Mega in the middle but that game is very hard to find!

It's a shame you never got to experience Slam-A-Winner Extreme. That was the truly fair, unscuffed, no BS version of this game. No "mega jackpot" on a central platform, no progressive bonus balls, just a jackpot starting at 250 + 10 per swipe, and a 150 hole where the "drop bonus balls" hole would be - WITH NO GUARD ON THE RIM. It was harder to hit, yes, but you could consistently hit it EVERY PLAY if you were good enough. On top of that, there were far less if any "duds" and the dropper was much more consistent than either version of Monster Drop. It used to be 9.9 chips (5.0 on Wednesday) for THREE balls, which since got nerfed to 4.8/2.4 for ONE after many years. This was THE easy infinite grind game back in the day.
I 100% agree with you on Monster Drop being a B tier - but man...Slam A Winner Extreme was straight up SS. Above anything you currently have in S and I don't think I'm out of line saying that - someone dialed in on the timing could EASILY get 100,000 tickets in under 1,400 chips on a Wednesday back in the golden age of advantage play.
Thanks for the nostalgia, even if it was on a variant game.

I gotta correct you on one thing. The add bonus balls during the bonus ball drop. It will add 1 to the total bonus balls left while in drop bonus balls mode. It cannot be infinite, as it takes one used ball to add one ball, if you hit that hole. It can absolutely prolong the "drop bonus balls" bonus time, for sure. But with so many other holes to hit on the board, chances are, it will never be "infinite".
