Southampton was really a late player in the ocean liner market, to the best of my knowledge it only really kicked off when White Star inagurated their Southampton service in 1907, providing a weekly service with two of their largest liners Adriatic and Oceanic, and two smaller liners from the previous decade, Teutonic and Majestic. Cunard began servicing Southampton with the Aquitania in 1914, though Lusitania and Mauretania stated at Liverpool until 1919. Following the war, the world's biggest liners all used Southampton docks. There's a glorious poster from the 1930's showcasing SS Normandie and RMS Queen Mary, then the world's grandest liners. An era that has since been lost, but replaced be booming cruise industry.
