To the final point: It's so, so, so fucking hard to find written resources to get quick answers to simple questions. I play nago: where on the screen do I stand against Johnny or Slayer? What do I do if Elphelt spams superjump back fireball? How do I play neutral against A.B.A? I don't own any of these characters so I can't lab them, so I go to the Dustloop matchups page for Nago: as of writing, all of these matchups have at best a few sentences on roundstarts. Going into discords is miserable because people are condescending with statements like "You're playing nago lol, just clone fukyo beyblade whenever you get bored". That shit makes me want to quit, man.
If you're playing nago, i recommend joining the Nago server and asking around there for matchup advice, you're not gonna get those kinds of statements from a community that actually plays the character. That aside, while I understand your frustration, the unfortunate reality is that writing good matchups in dustloop is hard work, and no one is paid to do it. My advice is that if you struggle with a certain move, look at that move's description for that character's dustloop page. It often lists the move's strengths and weaknesses, and you should be able to draw your own conclusions from that and figure out how your character can deal with it. For instance, Elphelt's air fireball is very minus on block, to the point that even if you do get hit by it, you can fukyo forward to close the gap.
Forgive me if I'm wrong but are there RUclipsrs that make match-up guides on RUclips? That's how I found out about Sol's strike throw mix and the Slayer safe zone. I agree that I want more
At some point you have to boot up the lab and find the answer on your own. You can’t rely on being spoonfed by NagoProfessional847 to teach you everything
Because the questions you're asking aren't simple. As Nago against Johnny or Slayer, it depends on your blood gauge and what your opponent's tendencies are, or where you are on the screen. Against Elphelt, with most characters I would dash block into a range and wait. The range would be where I can dash 9 jump and air to air them if they jump back, but I know I'm not guaranteed to get a punish in every circumstance, such as if they up back and just block, or if they up back into an immediate rising aerial to defend the space in front of them. Some characters can *just* hit a button if they jump in that spacing (al la Axl 6k or something similar), some characters can do some loony toons callouts outs (think Chipp run up 2H), but *most* have access to the first thing I said. However, Nago does not. Again, depends on your blood level and screen positioning. If you're at high blood, you can try to 2H, if you're at low blood, you can try to preemptively fukyo DP *if* you don't mind the risk associated with spending that much blood, and you won't die if you're incorrect on the option they pick. Alternatively, you could also try to clone on their landing if you have enough space that the clone comes out and clashes the fireball, I think. I don't know, I haven't labbed that option, and I try to avoid just hanging out in that spacing. How do you play neutral against ABA? Again, depends on your blood gauge, their blood gauge, your resources (burst and meter), and their resources (burst and meter). Additionally, are they aggressive? Are they passive? What do they do on roundstart? Do you know your roundstart options? Do they know their own? Like these don't have quick answers because the answers literally depend. Even stuff like fishing for IBFD on wakeup has counterplay (delay meaty, BRC on the opponent's wakeup to alter timing, raw throw on read if you're a lunatic, etc), because that's fighting games in a nutshell. It's REALLY hard to play GTO (game theory optimal), and most people default to exploitative play with little to no thought, so they don't actually know a matchup. I cannot emphasize enough that these questions don't have simple, correct answers at all levels. There are simple answers at layer 1, but as you get higher and higher up the chain, you have to learn how to do science. The reason why the advice of "lab that shit" gets thrown around so much is because that's about as close as we have to an absolute truth in the FGC. TL;DR: the whole point is that there IS no TL;DR for your questions, AND the community is really dumb.
Honestly same - I'm fine with joining servers for more in-depth info, but I'd love for video guides to give me the broader stuff A counterplay series would be awesome

I heard this from a Mario Kart player but I think it still applies "If you make mistakes you should not expect to win the race" in the same way, if you play a round where you drop you're combos and miss your punishes you can't turn around and complain when you lose the round.
That involves being accountable, having realistic expectations, understanding that mistakes happen but you can’t fixate on them; which to be blunt, A LOT people don’t have a good enough mental yet to understand that.
There's a difference between losing because you made a SINGLE mistake vs making two. Mario Kart course doesn't end on a single lap. Slayer is three redshell on first and blue shell on second.

I dont have johnny, ur server doesnt really have johnny players so how is one supposed to practice against a character when u cant even lab against it
I 100% agree, the only dlc character I have is Bridget and I understand her counterplay because I play her but every other dlc character is just so hard to understand. I don’t even understand some of the dlc characters moves because I haven’t ever played them. If it was a normal character I would just go into training to mess around and lab against it
I very much agree with the opinion that DLC characters should still be playable against in dojo and versus. It is asinine to stop people being able to learn characters because they can't shell out for MORE than double the original price of the game. Absolute greed.
@@Dhampire1976not to be the easiest high damage character for one that completely disabled zoning with 50 meter. High damage isn't the problem, it's that he unlocks high damage anywhere and everywhere. He doesn't care whether it's corner or not, he doesn't care if you are full screen or not.
A quick recap for people who started playing Strive yesterday: Strive is a high damage game, many characters deal more damage than they should. Being broken was never about high damage. Being broken is always about uninteractive characters. I'll gladly take Slayer doing above average damage over HC, Jack-O, Zato, Bridget and Leo running overly safe, loopable, uninteractive pressure over and over.
Bridget pressure kinda easy for me to deal w bc I have more chances to gamble. With slayer I need to focus a little more when he gets his 1 chance, which is ok!

Even though Slayer's 50% tension super may suck as a reversal, reminder it beats EVERY super in the game, yes even HMC(he goes directly through it snd takes 0 damage.) only one that technically beats it is HPB,only because Pot literally jumps out of the way lmao. So I use it to challenge when an opponent whiffs or tries to meaty super
I've returned to the game after like an 8 month hiatus and am motivated to stop being a scrub on autopilot ahaha. It's amazing how much more clarity I have about the game now that I am not in the pit of depression and anxiety. Listen I have 1000 hours in this game and 900 of those are brainless autopilot and 100 are actual effective learning. But now I can see it -- my offense sucks, my neutral sucks, my defense SUCKS. Coming back to the game and realizing that Celestial is not free anymore was a much needed wakeup call. I appreciate the commitment to sharing knowledge.
I mean he has the most dmg in the game, a ton of ways to start and keep his turn where he's overwhelmingly favored to win the interaction, and a mountain of health to get through. Either fix his damage, scaling, conversionability, or massively nerf his 5k/2h/2d. It makes no sense for him to keep everything he has. And yes, there are a lot of one-off examples of insane and unjustifiable aspects of certain characters (Sol 5K), and I denounce those as well. But Slayer wreaks havoc across all floors, and will need to be correct way less than their non-Slayer playing opponents. I don't buy that he's having THAT difficult a time in neutral for one second.
The thing that always gets me aviut slayer is that I never find one with a good connection. Totally anecdotal but fr the number of 250 ping slayers I lose to is crazy bc that character performs so well when youre on 7+ rollback frames
I personally think Slayer was the dev check for the temperature of the room for the big patch to see how far they should or should not push some of the character buffs/nerfs
The wprst part of strive is that some characters are slayers forever, never allowed to leave top tier And some are Faust or Testament (As in ASW refuse to bring some characters to their level to make the game more interactive and fun)
I still remember beating one S1 HC just by looking at this bar and his reload/focus and he RQ'd when I hit him next round. It's like playing a different game, at least Slayer still plays guilty gear.
I don’t play Strive (yet) but the title got me to watch and your presentation kept me to the end. Your attitude of wanting to help has made me a fan. I wish you the best in all your endeavors!
A bit ago, I provided counterplay for slayer that everyone could use and to see a lot of people just dunk on me for trying to help them, it just feels extremely irritating. If people still don't figure out how to fight Slayer months after if he gets nerfed, I'm just going to assume people prefer to complain.
As a slayer player, even without the damage, 2h is a problem. CH 2h is basically his win condition IMO, you get an auto timed backshot combo, you do 80 million damage no risc, BUILD A FULL METER, then either get wallbroken, or have to block an 8 way against Slayer with meter. It's way too much reward for basically a 6 frame reverse 6p. I've taken games off champs as a sol who barely made celestial, that's how good it is.
You could say same stuff about half of the cast. Moroha is a win con. Johnny 2K > 2D, 236K is a win con, GL hitting your block with a Behemoth in the corner is a win con, etc.
The problem is the fact that when I do slight mistake against a good Sol player I die When I do a slight mistake against bad Sol I won't die When I do a slight mistake against any Slayer I die
@@the0therethan I'm against Slayer(or any character for that matter) getting piece easy punish for 80% of my HP bar. It's alright when my opponent needs to do something harder than c.S > 6H > PB > RRC > c.S > 6H > PB > WS > 6H
Slayer does too much damage on some starters, but if you’re losing to Slayers that are vastly “worse” skill wise than you, you simply struggle with consistency. It can be it’s a bad matchup or you aren’t good at counter play yet. Either way it’s on you, not the Slayer players.
@@Hotashi I wrote the comment while being 25% through the video because of not quite understanding what the hell are you gonna talk about for the next 15 more minutes. From a perspective of a pretty average player there's like nothing to talk about except for him being stupid (not broken) After watching the entire video I kinda get what your point is. It's not like I will stop hating Slayer in the current state he is, but instead I see more fundamental problems in the game, instead of focusing on an individual character
I really liked this tweet you made when it came out. thank you for saying what I was thinking that there are bigger issues than Slayer. Anyway make Sato not bottom one please
I'm glad to be (kinda) done with the shitty tower system now that I can conistently get into Celestial every month, but the problem still remains that finding equally skilled players is stupidly inconsistent, some matches I decimate, a lot of matches I get decimated, and a very very small amount of matches are back and forths between me and someone who can hold their own. It feels like its a lot harder to experiment and learn when matches are overwhelming since Strive is so high damage. I'm just praying for an actual ranked system.
vod review from evo champion for free?! is very tempting... But you ain't gonna catch me with that cause I know I'm gonna get clowned on for playing anji like a crackhead 🎉 /j
I don't think it's that bad, his turn without meter is very short so you aren't losing all your mana just for blocking him once, you really just gotta space yourself well and never go too far out since you'll be in danger of super mappa
I almost want to send you footage with a big " How do I beat Slayer ?!" but surprise, it's about beating +R Slayer because I swear, they're the one beating my ass. Would be a funny one.
the annoying thing as a may player is that almost every match just boils down to a single 50/50 guess on dandy step. either i hit my 2h and take 80% of his health or he ch me and takes 80% of my health. Its a guess you have to make at some point in the matchup and everything before doesnt really matter due to the high dmg.
You should not be pressing 2H against dandy step, you're gonna get blown up by everything that isn't MH. If you see them dandy step in a blockstring press 5P, that beats the high and the low. If they MH you recover in time to throw it before it hits you. The only thing this loses to is pilebunker, but if they don't have meter to RC it's a huge risk.
Slayer haters not realizing that they have been playing the same sht from Strive season. My brother you are just justifying toxicity because the sun was in your eyes.
because the one 80% combo opens up more advantage. Now the 80% winner either simply doesn't even need to engage and just make the opponent waste their time playing catchup, or win by finding very simple stray 20 or 10% hits.
People bitched about Zato as well. Its not that he's easy to play, it's because hes popular AND a scrubkiller. I was never a strong player with Zato in S1 but god I could get away with robbery...
I’ve always thought slayer players were little bitches since I fought them in plus R lmaoo My hate for slayer ain’t new, so I’m glad I just play street fighter 6 and watch all of this from the side. It’s very entertaining
Boogeyman? Where John Wick at? Do you hate Slayer, or do you hate how it seems easy for him to beat you? I didn't realize how hard it is to win with characters I once despised until I actually tried to understand and play them.
I just picked up the game the other day after not playing a guilty gear for like 15 years and I was like "Oh! Slayer! I remember this guy, he was really fun!" Besides feeling like I don't have any air options, he feels like I remembered. Then I get online and see the hate, and now I feel bad for picking the guy I like.
Thank you Hotashi for being there for us. I'm grateful that you're able to tolerate our faults and still provide guidance for those who want to seek it and improve. We may stumble and fall at times, some even giving up. But when we get up to try again, it helps when you're there. So thanks.
I just think people complain too much in general. Like yea losing a match where it felt bullshit can be frustrating but that frustration should go away after like, 5 minutes tops.
Nerf his damage, nerf his health, and he becomes what he used be, and ends most of the hate he carries with him. I like Slayer so much but I keep getting trashtalked even when im just playing with fundamentals.
If you take away the Slayer's life and damage, he won't become what he was before. The Slayer's mistake in Strive was the shitload of gatlings they gave him, thinking it would be a good idea. I'm a Slayer player, I've only played with it since it was released and yesterday I did 2 -1 on Umisho because it fell in a 2H at the wrong time. If it was Slayer from the old testament, I wouldn't even have the option to do dandy step after the counterhit

Like, I want you to just keep jumping against slayer and see how much harder it is for him. 6p, or even close slash can't even do as much
You could say same stuff about half of the cast. Moroha is a win con. Johnny 2K > 2D, 236K is a win con, GL hitting your block with a Behemoth in the corner is a win con, etc.
@@zhenyaloginov I guess so, it's just from what I've played, the moment that I get the 2h combo, the game is over.
@@zhenyaloginov Their point, I think, was that 2H was a significantly easier and more powerful win con than these.
The problem is the fact that when I do slight mistake against a good Sol player I die
When I do a slight mistake against bad Sol I won't die
When I do a slight mistake against any Slayer I die
I think you missed the point of the video…
@@the0therethan I'm against Slayer(or any character for that matter) getting piece easy punish for 80% of my HP bar. It's alright when my opponent needs to do something harder than c.S > 6H > PB > RRC > c.S > 6H > PB > WS > 6H
i dont think you watched the video
Slayer does too much damage on some starters, but if you’re losing to Slayers that are vastly “worse” skill wise than you, you simply struggle with consistency. It can be it’s a bad matchup or you aren’t good at counter play yet. Either way it’s on you, not the Slayer players.
@@Hotashi I wrote the comment while being 25% through the video because of not quite understanding what the hell are you gonna talk about for the next 15 more minutes. From a perspective of a pretty average player there's like nothing to talk about except for him being stupid (not broken)
After watching the entire video I kinda get what your point is. It's not like I will stop hating Slayer in the current state he is, but instead I see more fundamental problems in the game, instead of focusing on an individual character
I really liked this tweet you made when it came out. thank you for saying what I was thinking that there are bigger issues than Slayer. Anyway make Sato not bottom one please
i dunk on slayers every day, hes not broken, its been months, people should know how to take advantage of his weaknesses by now.
I'm just praying for an actual ranked system.
i play both sol and slayer and slayer still feels like im legit cheating rn
maybe all the chaos players I play are dog, but I find test - HC to be pretty even with the new bite
match review pog
Na, he'd broke
Waiting for the next overlord to take over in season 4 and for everyone complains about them
Unika is gonna be bonkers trust
vod review from evo champion for free?! is very tempting...
But you ain't gonna catch me with that cause I know I'm gonna get clowned on for playing anji like a crackhead 🎉 /j
Slayer-Asuka MU…. We don’t talk about that
I don't think it's that bad, his turn without meter is very short so you aren't losing all your mana just for blocking him once, you really just gotta space yourself well and never go too far out since you'll be in danger of super mappa
I want to complain but I've mained happy chaos since his release so if I do imma get roasted
about the match review stuff, like when is it on stream
Hotashi you can't just use Omega Strikers music like that, it hurts my heart...
Why tf was ur finger in the water bottle like that at 17:35 😭😭😭
fidget fidgeter fidgeting
love the video i have trouble watching twitch streams because attention span
when beyblade grab his ass
Noted 🪐
Zato main since week -1 🖤
I started playing strive recently and i don't own slayer so i have no way to really practice counterplay without going online
I feel like if Jack-O' was more popular and didn't have such dogshit defense there'd be way more complaints about her.
lmao im at the start of the video
Hey, will you coach even older games, like XRD? it would be great
Slayer haters not realizing that they have been playing the same sht from Strive season. My brother you are just justifying toxicity because the sun was in your eyes.
How do I reach out for replay reviews?
HOW DO WE SEND THE CLIPS YOUR WAY!!!!!!!! ID LOVE TO HAVE YOU REVIEW SOME OF MY GAMES
can you cover the pot vs elph matchup.
Ultimately what's the difference between two combos that are 80% and two that are 55% when both kill you?
because the one 80% combo opens up more advantage. Now the 80% winner either simply doesn't even need to engage and just make the opponent waste their time playing catchup, or win by finding very simple stray 20 or 10% hits.
how do we submit replays? is there a form we can fill?
I think slayer is broken but everyone else is broken because they can run pressure and axl cant :)
People bitched about Zato as well. Its not that he's easy to play, it's because hes popular AND a scrubkiller. I was never a strong player with Zato in S1 but god I could get away with robbery...
In what universe was a character with a sub 4% pick rate considered popular? This is objective cap. Even in S1 he sat at like 3.2%
"Slayer kills me in 2 combos"
Right, because NO other character in Guity Gear Strive does that
What other character does round start 2h counterhit into the corner with 0 burst or tension required.
I’ve always thought slayer players were little bitches since I fought them in plus R lmaoo
My hate for slayer ain’t new, so I’m glad I just play street fighter 6 and watch all of this from the side. It’s very entertaining
Boogeyman? Where John Wick at?
Do you hate Slayer, or do you hate how it seems easy for him to beat you?
I didn't realize how hard it is to win with characters I once despised until I actually tried to understand and play them.
Damn Hotashi really went from killing guilty gear to saving it
I just picked up the game the other day after not playing a guilty gear for like 15 years and I was like "Oh! Slayer! I remember this guy, he was really fun!" Besides feeling like I don't have any air options, he feels like I remembered. Then I get online and see the hate, and now I feel bad for picking the guy I like.
Same. I used to play Faust, Pot, Slayer back in XX days, but Slayer feels dumb in a bad way currently.
play who you love and dont back down unless its s1 happy chaos
These soll players in the chat man 😂😂😂
i hope if they nerf slayer they buff his backdash
Fundeez
If you take away the Slayer's life and damage, he won't become what he was before. The Slayer's mistake in Strive was the shitload of gatlings they gave him, thinking it would be a good idea.
I'm a Slayer player, I've only played with it since it was released and yesterday I did 2 -1 on Umisho because it fell in a 2H at the wrong time. If it was Slayer from the old testament, I wouldn't even have the option to do dandy step after the counterhit
