Fascinating. Kevin, do you find that researching the roots of language inspires ideas for other videos? Slightly unrelated but I was looking up the French equivalent of 'The Morrigan' which, at least according to the source I found, 'Morrigan'. Which naturally leads to the Celtic diaspora and the divide in French mythology between the country's Northern regions and those of Southern France. It's not something I've delved that deeply into as I only needed some basic information for a novel that I'm working on but I thought I'd share just to see if you have any thoughts on this 'quirk'. After all the Gauls are regarded as Celtic yet only the North seems to retain its Celtic heritage. Of course I could be way off beam here as sources on French folk tales, myths and legends appear rather thin on the ground compared to British, Irish, Native American, Egyptian, and Greco-Roman equivalents.

The original Scots are not Germanic. They're Celtic

    • @kaloarepo288
      @kaloarepo288 Год назад

Actually the original "Scots" were from Ireland - so many migrated and invaded into the kingdom of Strathclyde across the Irish sea that eventually the other side came to be called "Scotland" whereas before it was "Alba". This connection can be seem with the name of the Dark Ages Irish philosopher Scotus Eriugina who was Irish not Scottish. The "Schottenkirche in Vienna is not named after Scottish missionaries but of the numerous Irish ones who converted many of the Germanic peoples to Christianity.

In Dutch there also exists the word "zwerk" for sky, cognate of the Sanskrit word "svarg". By the end of the 20th century, this word had all but disappeared from our everyday language, but then it made an unexpected come-back thanks to the Dutch translation of the Harry Potter novels, in which they translated Quidditch as "Zwerkbal", i.e. Sky Ball.

Great video! I’ve noticed similarities with the PIE Dyeus Pater (heavenly father), of course Deus, Zeus, Jupiter, with the Baltic skygod Deivas, the rune Teiwaz, and the Finnish word for sky today ”taivas”. Then there is also the thing with the Sampo of Kalevala as the mill / pole of the sky, and the Indian Sambho, a cosmic pillar (?), plus the hammer of the skygod Ukko (meaning ”father”) is ”vasara” or ”vaaja” connecting maybe with the Indian Vajra. And as Ukko used to be called most likely Perkele, Perkunas, thundergod and ”lord of the oaks”, the word for ”oak” in some Indo-language seems to be ”perk”..? -Antti, Helsinki

I've found as of late that finding a quiet place among nature and looking into the sky while thinking on my passed family and the unfathomable nature of divinity fills me with far more comfort and confidence than sharing a bench and hearing a lot of noise about the word of a dead foreign god. This video has helped me a little bit in returning to my roots.

Were it not for your considerable talents, this would have been tedious to research de novo. Fortunately, your presentation is so well done, that it’s more akin to poetry than an etiology lesson.
Just something I noticed a few years ago.. btw.. one of the Greek words for cloud is Nepheli.. which accounts for the biblical term Nephilim.. I think, as the fathers of the Nephilim were from the sky too, apparently. Greek and Hebrew are incredibly close to each other in many ways, too.
    Thanks for sharing. 🤗 Blessings!

Is it possible to trace European Himmel (2:25) to Indian Himalaya. In India, we associate Himalayas with heaven, and our ancient books also mention that the way to the heaven goes through the Himalayas,
If true, can it also hint towards out of India theory, which states that IndoEuropean Homeland was in Northern areas of Indian Subcontinent (possibly near Kashmir)?

    • @grandmarshallkingwolfman420

Himalayas derives from Sanskrit "hima" (snow, frost) and "ālaya" (house, dwelling).

All these myths regarding the depiction of the cosmos as a cave remind me of an location in a videogame I just played, Elden Ring. In the game an underground area called "Siofra River" has a celestial vault made of glittering stones, which recall the stars in the sky. Really a sight to behold, especially the first time you set foot in it. Probably not by chance, the ruins in this area clearly reference the ruins of ancient Greece.
This authors of this game (From Software) have taken a lot from medieval and ancient Western mythos, also for their previous works.

Thank you so much for this! The connection of heaven and stone makes great yet mysterious sense to me….. for this ball of rock we live upon came from the ethers! And maybe that some form of solid building (hammer) had to meet the vastness of the aboves for our middle to form here on earth. Much like rocks falling from the sky, we are miraculously and un accidentally on a floating rock too…. Hard to find words for the mystical beauties that behold us. However I strongly believe reclaiming the ancient ways, languages and beliefs can help us create a truly just, loving and harmonious world : )

Never connected the heavens with something as solid as stone but I suppose people observed that meteorites were made of stone so the heavens were of stone (actually silica) and the name "Peter" - Pietro,Pierre, Pedro, Petrus etc means "rock" or "stone" but I doubt if there is a connection?

The word “Heaven”, you say, derives from a proto indo-germanic word meaning stone. Funnily enough, the Hebrew word for stone is “evènn” - which is intriguing, as semitic languages aren’t supposedly related to indo-germanic ones 🤔 As regards “Ouranos”, or Heaven, meaning both “wide” and “rain” - again, the Hebrew word for the heavens, “Shamayim” incorporates the word “mayim”, meaning waters. Maybe the relationships are conceptual rather than linguistic, indicating that certain concepts were common to many societies over a broad geographical and linguistic range.

I'm surprised you didn't touch on the concept that Thor's stone hammer had lightning powers or that Zeus's thunderbolts were forged by Hephaestus on a stone anvil........lso in all the old hebrew heavens literally translates to sky, and the hebrew god lived on a mountain, not in the sky, that concept would come much later,a nd then eventually the Christians would interpret heaven to mean an ethereal realm.

Heaven is a place on Earth. Heaven could be achieved if people were able to create it by following Truth. This after reaching enlightenment along having become a moral person. The root from the Aryan mythology is a solar religion. The oldest most complete written down adaptation from the Lady can be found in the poems of Inanna and the Huluppu Tree, Inanna her Descent to the Great Below. It shows the path of the sun, the enlightenment, and becoming a moral person of age. More fragemented and with missing parts can be found in the Vedics or the lost Mycenaean mythology. One that is complete is the Celtic and Nordic myhtology however they were adapted and modifed over time.
In the narrative Inanna becomes divine after acquiring all the knowledge of chthonic realm and is able to judge in a moral sence when she returns to the Below. From there she can create heaven in her temple.

Slavic nebo is also closely related to the -hebus, since it’s coming from Greek нєбєсє. As you can notice, spelling both words and upper case produces the same image but slightly different sound: HEBO. Slavic n looks like this in upper case H, and Slavic b (Б) is usually really close to v (В) in sound. So, another aspect of word relations can be it’s graphical representation.

Sanskrit is the language, responsible for All these word & all language on earth , so dont flatter yourself as you neglecting the source because , there is no doubt that The heaven etc came from Home ( होम ) or Havan ( हवन ) which is responsible for the creation & sky etc came from Aakaash ( आकाश ) or Ether . Also fermanent is possible derived from Brahmanda ( ब्रह्मांड ), which means universe .
