I'd say Finland and Estonia are more like brothers than cousins. There are cultural differences but by language and ethnicity we are brothers. Not quite Austrians and Germans but maybe like Danes and Norwegians.
There's no medieval cities in Finland because we barely had any cities back then. Helsinki was established in 14th century but it was just a small village until 19th century (hence the 19th century architecture). Turku was biggest city but it was mostly made out of wooden buildings and suffered many fires through history. But compared to Turku Tallinn was major economical centre in Northern Europe and that's why it hosts pretty spectacular medieval architecture.
Those are not soviet blocky living units. Those are neoclassical administration and university buildings built in the time that Finland was part of the Russian Empire. Also, the reason Helsinki isn't medieval is the fact that when Tallinn(or Reval originally) was a prosperous Hansa trading city, Helsinki was a wooden fishing village that burned down all the time.
I'm not from Estonia, but I've spent a year living there, and let me tell you, I can't wait to go back. Such an awesome country, with good food, friendly people, beautiful architecture and landscapes. If they only had more than one mountain, it'd be perfect.
Estonia doesn't have a single mountain. Suur Munamägi is a hill. A pretty small hill on most countries' standards. If there were no trees on top of it the top would barely be above the surrounding forest.
TheMumblingDumpling Yeah, if I'm not wrong the word mägi means both hill and mountain in Estonian, so I can see someone could be confused, but in all honesty it can't really be called a mountain. Even the fells of Finland aren't usually called mountains.
Kama is not trash, or at least I have never heard someone use it to speak about trash. Kama means "stuff" or in slang use "drugs". I'm Finnish and have lived in Estonia and speak the both languages. Probably you have enough information Paul, but if you need more info about something I could help.
+ShroomWalrus, yes but, how do you get to know anyone if you don't talk to them? Online dating? Pardon my ignorance since I no very little about the Baltic States, hence the questions.
An Estonia newspaper recently held a contest to submit the best stereotype jokes about Estonia, because the rest of the world has literally no ethnic jokes for Estonians: www.rferl.org/content/estonia-newspaper-contest-making-fun-of-estonians/27012309.html
Why would he even do that? =.=" Russia has no reason to invade anyone. Yes, there's Crimea, but Crimea decided to go back to Russia, not the other way round. It's like being afraid that China is gonna invade Bhutan…
One fact about Estonia is that they want to be a Nordic country but no one in the Nordic countries want them, but they will accept Scotland if they became independent
1MuchButteR1 Don't lie to yourself, every one of the Baltics would give an arm and a leg to be like the Nordics. And do remember that the Baltics also accept refugees, but they don't have as many as the Nordics because none of the refugees want to go to the Baltics when the Nordics are right next door.
I'm Estonian and I wanted us to be a part of the Nordic countries but now that most of them are full of dirty Muslims being a part of them isn't something to be proud about. I'm 100% sure that most Baltic people don't want their countries to be overrun by these so called ''refugees''. Sure, there are many leftist traitors who hate their own people but luckily they are a minority.
Hello Estonians commenting here! :) I am really excited to see the Estonia video. I dream of visiting Tallinn, and gazing at the Baltic coast. Would like to see Riga as well! Latvia is incredibly beautiful. I want to visit Finland too of course! I am very interested in the Finnish & Estonian languages, but I also really like the Latvian language. I wrote a paper about the grammar of Latvian (very complicated!) for one of my Linguistics classes in university. It was a lot of fun. I wrote another paper about the history of the Finnish language. That was for Historical Linguistics. I have not written anything about Estonian, but I know lots about it! (I don't speak Estonian, but I can pronounce the words :D). P.S. I also like Lithuanian, and I'd love to visit Vilnius. Yes, I am aware that Lithuanian and Latvian aren't related to Estonian and Finnish. ;) I'm learning Russian in university atm, since they don't offer any of these 4 languages, sadly. Greetings from Canada! (but I'm actually from the Caribbean, lol)
We visited Estonia last year, but we took a ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki. Its a great city to explore apart from its historical heritage Tallin has some really amazing public parks and malls to hang out in.
It's the exact same tune. The only difference is the lyrics, and that in the Finnish anthem the chorus is sung twice, and in the Estonian one it's only sung once. It was originally composed by Fredrik Pacius, a German born composer who lived most of his life in Finland, and is considered the father of Finnish classical music. The song was first performed to the public 13.5.1848 at the Flora Day celebration in Helsinki, then about 10-20 years later it was first presented in Estonia and they loved it so much that they kind of started to use it as their unofficial national anthem, which was a little odd since the song had nothing to do with Estonia.
Estonia has the coolest flag of all! I'm really interested in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania but I've only been to Lithuania =) The "Baltic Way" was really impressive.
I loved Tallinn. I visited Estonia briefly after renewing my Russian work visa this summer in Finland. Maybe I'll go back soon and visit Latvia and Lithuania as well. Luckily bus tickets from St. Petersburg are around 15 euros one way. It's cheap for me to travel there and the Baltics are interesting.
There's this thing that singing and music festivals were a big thing in the nationalist movement that eventually led them to become an independent state when the soviet union fell.
Loved seeing the BTS of Geography Now. Really funny. Especially the commentary on the Estonian Song Contest. I wanted to say pretty much the same things. LOL
+Matas Vasiliauskas He's correcting the commenters grammar. It's supposed to be 'were' and not 'was' in this case, because he's referring to multiple subjects
"we don`t have a sun, even if we did it won`t shine" part is true af because there were like 10 sunny days this summer and even right now, as i am writing this it is cloudy outside
I love your commentary on the videos. I'd totally watch a video of you commenting on videos... which... I guess I just did. Because thats what this video was....... good job.
Technically speaking New Zealand uses UTC+13 in summer. Of course it isn't DST right now in the south hemisphere so the only way you'd be watching in that time zone unless you live in Samoa or something near, where it'd be unlikely you'll be watching this video. Also, just saying, but UTC+14 exists too.
Well thank you for correcting me. I am a kiwi but i just go with whatever time it is and haven't really studied time zones at all. You're like the first person who hasn't either yelled at me or been sarcastic when correcting me. XD
Estonia har done a fantastic job.👏.In 20-25 years from ruins to a modern beautiful country. This would be a perfect example for developing countries. They did it right.👍
Kama means stuff/belongings/gear etc. (A collection of objects) in finnish not trash. I dunno where he got that, or then Ive just missed that weird usage of the word.

Italy was never very interested in the Eurovision, it could be cause it was perceived as a less prestigious Sanremo festival (Italy's most important song contest from where eurovision took inspiration). However i hate how almost every country sings in english at the Eurovision :\
Very enertaining video 😄 i laughed about the sun comment 😆 in general we sure have a sun that shines but since we are located in the north we sure hava many days when the sky is cloudy. Bog walk is cool, this place has the most clean water and air. But not everybody takes a bog walk with these "shoes" 😋 You can also walk on the bulit road. Not all estonians are modest and quiet. Since we live together with russians, many of us have also russian roots. Like myself. Even Ukrainian roots :) so it adds to our culture many temperamental and emotional characters :) Great video though, i liked it! 👏🏼😊
Yeah, we adopted *A LOT* of Soviet architecture, here in Finland, under U. K. Kekkonen. We call it ”Funktionalismi”, or ”Functionalism” in English, because it was about fulfilling its function. We’ve mainly preserved individual buildings, like the various castles and fortresses. Also, some of our older towns might have been completely destroyed in our wars and rebellions against Sweden; as Turku is our oldest *SURVIVING* city/town; not necessarily oldest, overall. 🇫🇮
we love the song and dance festival because its almost the only time of year that we dont fight each other and its a big part of singing revolution and becoming independent
If you don't wear the snow shoe-like things in the bog, you'll sink around knee deep into the bog. It has a larger area, so your weight is spread along it all to support you on the watery surface
For my ancestral lands, I need to wait for France, Ireland, Lithuania, and Poland. So I'll be watching this channel for a LONG time. I wish I could support, but I am sadly poor.
Those bogs are like a dense carpet of vegetation floating on top of standing water, and that water can be very deep. I'm light enough to walk across them most most of the time, but I sank up to my waist in one once.
What I find weird is the wife-carrying and bog thing we also do in Scotland. I wonder if it's the Norse connection. But cannot wait to see the Estonia show. But I do remember that was a massive ferry accident during my childhood. It was the first time I had heard of Estonia and because of that is the reason I fell in love with Geography. So thank you Estonia.
Is there anyone from Estonia familiar with Vello Vaher who was on America's Got Talent this year? How famous is he in his home country out of curiosity?
I've moved to Tallinn, there are flower shops everywhere, it doesn't make sense economically, who's buying all the flowers. there's a whole street of flower shops. and there are amazing cafes everywhere, everywhere, walk behind an apartment block and there is a cafe. And they won't admit it but the people are pretty nice.
Dont forget that we kicked the Landerwehr out of Riga and the Bolsheviks out of Latvia. We basically liberated your country and gave it back to you! :D
Well, we always have liked you guys, probably our favorite neighbor. Sorry Lithuania. :D But yeah, my grand grand father was fighting together with some Estonians in Northern Latvian army around 1920. :)
My great grand gather whose in the SS and my second great grand father whose in the Wehrmacht, (Both were Estonians) The one in the SS whose basically a officer too. :D
0:17 You're assuming that Helsinki once had a medieval old city like Tallinn, but the thing is that Helsinki became Finland's capital not before than 1812 after Russian Czar Alexander I basically wanted to have this newborn autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland's capital closer to Russia after taking over Finland in war with Sweden 1809. City of Turku in Southwest Finland which served as a capital before Helsinki has some medieval buildings but town has suffered several fires in history so many medieval parts of the city has been lost. For Helsinki's distinctive neoclassical (or Empire) features we own thanks to German architect Carl Ludvig Engel who Czar Alexander I hired to create the monumental center (0:24) for Finland's new capital. Before that Helsinki had remained small village even though already king Gustav I of Sweden (who founded city 1550) had plans to create a rival for Hanseatic city of Tallinn on the other side of the gulf. It's said that Helsinki's monumental centre, from one architect's pen, is one of the most significant examples of neoclassical architecture.

Helsinki didn't really have a medieval city to retain, plus it mostly burned down in 1808.
