    There's no medieval cities in Finland because we barely had any cities back then. Helsinki was established in 14th century but it was just a small village until 19th century (hence the 19th century architecture). Turku was biggest city but it was mostly made out of wooden buildings and suffered many fires through history. But compared to Turku Tallinn was major economical centre in Northern Europe and that's why it hosts pretty spectacular medieval architecture.

    • @PC_Simo

      And Estonians think *THEY’RE* isolated :-P?

  • @avalen767
    @avalen767 8 лет назад +19

    Those are not soviet blocky living units. Those are neoclassical administration and university buildings built in the time that Finland was part of the Russian Empire. Also, the reason Helsinki isn't medieval is the fact that when Tallinn(or Reval originally) was a prosperous Hansa trading city, Helsinki was a wooden fishing village that burned down all the time.

    I'm not from Estonia, but I've spent a year living there, and let me tell you, I can't wait to go back. Such an awesome country, with good food, friendly people, beautiful architecture and landscapes. If they only had more than one mountain, it'd be perfect.

    • @hankdasilva3817
      @hankdasilva3817 8 лет назад +4

      Estonia doesn't have a single mountain. Suur Munamägi is a hill. A pretty small hill on most countries' standards. If there were no trees on top of it the top would barely be above the surrounding forest.

    • @themumblingdumpling2838
      @themumblingdumpling2838 8 лет назад +1

      Rauta Arska
      Well, I always thought it looked more like a hill, too, but everyone always insisted it was, in fact, a mountain, so I went with it.

    • @hankdasilva3817
      @hankdasilva3817 8 лет назад

      TheMumblingDumpling Yeah, if I'm not wrong the word mägi means both hill and mountain in Estonian, so I can see someone could be confused, but in all honesty it can't really be called a mountain. Even the fells of Finland aren't usually called mountains.

And do remember that the Baltics also accept refugees, but they don't have as many as the Nordics because none of the refugees want to go to the Baltics when the Nordics are right next door.

      I'm 100% sure that most Baltic people don't want their countries to be overrun by these so called ''refugees''. Sure, there are many leftist traitors who hate their own people but luckily they are a minority.

    Hello Estonians commenting here! :) I am really excited to see the Estonia video. I dream of visiting Tallinn, and gazing at the Baltic coast. Would like to see Riga as well! Latvia is incredibly beautiful. I want to visit Finland too of course!
    I am very interested in the Finnish & Estonian languages, but I also really like the Latvian language. I wrote a paper about the grammar of Latvian (very complicated!) for one of my Linguistics classes in university. It was a lot of fun. I wrote another paper about the history of the Finnish language. That was for Historical Linguistics. I have not written anything about Estonian, but I know lots about it! (I don't speak Estonian, but I can pronounce the words :D).
    P.S. I also like Lithuanian, and I'd love to visit Vilnius. Yes, I am aware that Lithuanian and Latvian aren't related to Estonian and Finnish. ;) I'm learning Russian in university atm, since they don't offer any of these 4 languages, sadly. Greetings from Canada! (but I'm actually from the Caribbean, lol)

      Yes, the tune is very similar.

    • @hankdasilva3817
      @hankdasilva3817 8 лет назад +7

      It's the exact same tune. The only difference is the lyrics, and that in the Finnish anthem the chorus is sung twice, and in the Estonian one it's only sung once. It was originally composed by Fredrik Pacius, a German born composer who lived most of his life in Finland, and is considered the father of Finnish classical music. The song was first performed to the public 13.5.1848 at the Flora Day celebration in Helsinki, then about 10-20 years later it was first presented in Estonia and they loved it so much that they kind of started to use it as their unofficial national anthem, which was a little odd since the song had nothing to do with Estonia.

      There's this thing that singing and music festivals were a big thing in

      independent state when the soviet union fell.

      Italy was never very interested in the Eurovision, it could be cause it was perceived as a less prestigious Sanremo festival (Italy's most important song contest from where eurovision took inspiration). However i hate how almost every country sings in english at the Eurovision :\

    Very enertaining video 😄 i laughed about the sun comment 😆 in general we sure have a sun that shines but since we are located in the north we sure hava many days when the sky is cloudy. Bog walk is cool, this place has the most clean water and air. But not everybody takes a bog walk with these "shoes" 😋 You can also walk on the bulit road. Not all estonians are modest and quiet. Since we live together with russians, many of us have also russian roots. Like myself. Even Ukrainian roots :) so it adds to our culture many temperamental and emotional characters :) Great video though, i liked it! 👏🏼😊

    Yeah, we adopted *A LOT* of Soviet architecture, here in Finland, under U. K. Kekkonen. We call it ”Funktionalismi”, or ”Functionalism” in English, because it was about fulfilling its function. We’ve mainly preserved individual buildings, like the various castles and fortresses. Also, some of our older towns might have been completely destroyed in our wars and rebellions against Sweden; as Turku is our oldest *SURVIVING* city/town; not necessarily oldest, overall. 🇫🇮

    0:17 You're assuming that Helsinki once had a medieval old city like Tallinn, but the thing is that Helsinki became Finland's capital not before than 1812 after Russian Czar Alexander I basically wanted to have this newborn autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland's capital closer to Russia after taking over Finland in war with Sweden 1809.
    City of Turku in Southwest Finland which served as a capital before Helsinki has some medieval buildings but town has suffered several fires in history so many medieval parts of the city has been lost.
    For Helsinki's distinctive neoclassical (or Empire) features we own thanks to German architect Carl Ludvig Engel who Czar Alexander I hired to create the monumental center (0:24) for Finland's new capital. Before that Helsinki had remained small village even though already king Gustav I of Sweden (who founded city 1550) had plans to create a rival for Hanseatic city of Tallinn on the other side of the gulf.
    It's said that Helsinki's monumental centre, from one architect's pen, is one of the most significant examples of neoclassical architecture.
