  • Don't believe the hype "If you build it they will come." Trust me, they won't. What I want to offer instead is a framework for building your own audience before you launch. Watch the video and ready the summary below! This is my freestyle, without notes or prompter.

In the beginning, our team focused on proactively getting feedback from potential customers (in our case freelancers). We had several meetings with freelancers and some of them panned out and some of them didn't but for the ones that did we made sure we added them to our Customer Advisory Board from the beginning and kept them engaged throughout the development process asking key questions about features. We reached out to these initial customers using mail merges via Yesware as a means of outbound communication. When we went into development we flipped the script so to speak by pushing out fb ads and creating a blog and social media channels. We treated the customers we got through inbound the same way as outbound development. It turns out they really like what we're planning on building and have been a solid source of referrals. I guess my piece of advice on this is that in the beginning, it's good to keep it human, you don't need to pretend to be a huge company before you've even launched. Treat your initial customers like new friends/advocates more than customers.

      Joshua, you nailed it!
      H2H, Human to Human.
People think we need to act like a big company, and what I've seen in the world (and this is a global trend) that we care more about small artisanal "just for me" type solutions.
Just look at the growth of Etsy and direct to consumer brands (and Kickstarter!)
We want to co-create things... and that's what you enabled for your customers.
      Awesome story! Thx for sharing.

This was very insightful. Sometimes I think we tend to overthink things. I love this process and I have actually been doing it, without realising it was a system. Thank you

This is exactly what I've been doing with my eCommerceTrainingAcademy.com. I launched the website, blog and creating content before even creating the courses.
I was able to generate lots of new leads as they wanted to get notified when I launch.
    Great advice!

Hi! This sounds like an amazing idea. I'm planning on doing the same thing, what resources did you use to get started? And how did you bring traffic to your website?

Thanks! I’m great at events but I tend to build an audience that is more connected to me as a person. Now I’m trying to figure out how to convert that into a personal brand for my new coaching offer.

Hi Dan, huge fan of yours. I always find it hard to know exactly what to talk about or create content about especially if you are a young entrepreneur. Any tips.

I’m always pre-selling in everything I’m working on!! I’ve always done that without meaning to do so!!

Thanks for your short introduction for basic growth hacking. I'm interested how to build a great audience before. I had several blogs, some where okay with a traffic of 3000 per month, but not really good. What makes the difference?
