Sinking of The Lady P

- This was the reefing of the Lady Philomena on June 23, 2018. This 120' ship was a confiscated drug-running ship that was donated to the county. The county installed 4 reef pyramids in the open cargo bay. It is one of the more popular shipwreck dive sites in the Volusia County area.

I'd like to know how sinking is initiated
Large cutouts are put in the haul just a foot or so above the waterline. Then the contractor pumps water into the haul to start the sinking process. As water is added the cutouts get closer and closer to the waterline. Once enough water has been pumped into the haul it will start filling on its own and sink.
A guy Poked a
wee hole in it it will sink later. Poke a big hole it will sink sooner
@@ScubaVizit’s called a hull not a ‘haul’ 😅
First of all, you get a sinking feeling. Then the boat actually sinks.
@@Never2PurpleWasTaken Typo.
She went down so even. Whether it's the way she sits in the water or if it was the proper calculations on hole numbers and locations ... well done. 👍🏻
Wow this was the most perfect sinking I have ever seen of a ship. She went down perfectly upright.
That is the most even-keeled sinking I have ever seen.
Can you imagine what it would be like to actually be going down with the ship? The under water shots were scary to me.
Great video. Well done. I filmed a reefing off Palm Beach, FL a few years back. Great fishing spot now.
Thank you so much for the clips of the bubbles they added so much to this story
TIDE : HOLD MY BEER.
i laughed so hard when the girl started yelling in the background then some guy just says "shut up" in 3:16
The end of a boat or ship is always sad to me. They did a ton of work, crossed many miles...then it's over. 😔🌹⚓
They did their civil service and thats their retirement on the ocean bed.
It's 4 am I really gotta get some sleep
RUclips: here watch this ship sink
Me: ok sure
RUclips: Oh hey I found several other nice videos to watch. Wanna see?
I looked at that rusty unloved looking hulk and thought, "Yes, it looks like its time has come." Then I realised that it was actually the nicely painted boat near it that was sinking!
Same here I was like wtf why sink the nice ship but keep the beat to shit ship
@@iPhone3GS_68 To put it mildly... It's lipstick on a pig. The Lady Philomena was not in good shape, and was built in 1956... Plus, you can only imagine how little work her last owners would have put into it if they were conducting illegal activities (as the description says).
Look at the hold, especially around the hatch: It's rusted out enough that I wouldn't trust it with my weight, let alone the seas or a load of cargo. And I'm not even a professional, I just have a passion for marine history and know how quickly a badly maintained ship will let you down. Oceanos, Arvin, Marine Electric, and the list goes on...
hey man i just wanna say i was the one that got you to 1k subs
"Totally ruined my shot!" CUT, CUT, CUT, CUT, totally ruined my viewing!!!

Does anyone know what the 'easel-like' structures (with what looks like shells ??) are ??
I think you're referring to the reef pyramids. Volusia County purchased four reef pyramids and mounted them to the hall of the ship's interior. Their hope was that it would increase the diversity of services that biologicals could attach to and also provide some additional weight to keep the shipwreck upright. Sometime shipwrecks will lean over because they're no longer balanced correctly when they're empty.
you can see how the water shifted from the stern to the bow, with nothing installed and the water weight! fascinating!
A Volusia County boat? 😔
This was a ship from south Florida delivered to Volusia County to become an artificial reef. It is now one of the best shipwreck dives in our area. It's located on Volusia County site 12. volusiacountyreefreport.com/index.php/volusia-s-reefs/22-site-12#v12-14sse3
@@ScubaVizShip was at the time Haitian-owned, Liberian-flagged: the DEA and USCG caught her trying to smuggle heroin into Florida
Wow. What would the risk level be of standing on that top platform as it went under : would you get dragged down with it or could you "just" swim away to the surface again ...(just checking in case I'm ever unlucky enough to be in that position ! :-) )
I think you'd likely be fine, as long as you weren't attached to the ship, and you were a strong swimmer.
Naah. There was a baker on the Titanic who just stepped off the poop deck as it plunged in. He reported no suction at all.

In my opinion the boiling bubbles from the sinking are COOL
Her life has not ended it’s just beginning she is now a nursery for young fish. And an educational tool for divers better to do this than scrap it and turn it into more polluting machines
The machines that keep the world going? You know, the machines that we need to not regress into nothing?
Lol yeah right, the new polluting machines can just be made out of new steel using iron mined from a polluting iron ore mine smelted by burning polluting coal from a polluting coal mine.
Nah she dead
Wish they would show a ship sinking from underneath the water line
I tried but the footage was crap. I had 4 GoPros mounted around the ship. All you can see is green water. Therewas a small amount of the footage include at the end of this video.
Wenn ein Kutter sinkt freuen sich die Krabben, doch am meisten freut sich die Frau des Kapitäns, die ihren Seebären immer bei sich hat.
When a cutter is sinking it's a joy for the shrimps, but especially for Captain's wife having her sea bear forever at her side.
Guck mal 👁👍
Lady p is small cargo ship which sinking due to old but no one there due to it's discomissioned before
I find that beautiful, but why horning when the boat sinking?
RIP to those who were lost.
That ship would have a lot of suction as it went down so it would be tough but maybe you could just return to the surface
1:33 That's some nasty looking water.
The water was pretty dirty that day but not that dirty. I think a lot of that brown is from rust and other crud that was left on the bottom of the boat. Supposedly it was cleaned but I guess that meant cleaned of oils and other non-natural contaminants.
That boat is a picture of America right now exactly!
2024... election cycle... Biden is winning.... the water is up to the bridge.
More dignified ending then having it grounded in a scrap yard and cut up into pieces
has anyone ever wondered how do they get the camera back?
My friend and I went in after it about an hour later. Viz was terrible but we were able to say we were the first to dive it.
I wonder

Thank you for the video.
How deep does this Ship sink please?
They made it to the bottom in one piece. Both are upright and still in great shape. ruclips.net/video/jKhpA4DaxRY/видео.html
I kinda wanna be on it while it’s sinking, that seems fun when u have a diving suit on
Be good to have a camera on the sea bed watching the vessel hit the bottom.
That would be awesome, never seen footage of that
YES! That's what I've always wanted to see, what it looks like when a ship hits the bottom. I hope to see footage of that one day.
Not to be rude or anything like that but why do you sink boats?
Common question actually, especially from those that are outside the USA. This ship was confiscated during a drug smuggling arrest. It was auctioned off to the highest bidder. In this case, it was sold to the County of Volusia in Florida to create an artificial reef. Think of it as an underwater park. This ship and the reef structures that were placed in the cargo area have created a fish habitat that is frequented by fishermen and scuba divers. This is a common practice in the United States.
"Totally ruined my shot"... No.. Your voice did.
I guess I should have dipped the audio for that clip... The boat that got in the way was too annoying for me to bite my tongue.

How do you mean, ruined your shot?
There was a circle of boats that were already positioned to watch the sinking of the ships and right when things started to happen this one big boat drove in front any of everyone, kind of getting in the way of our view for filming and taking pictures. Not that big a deal, just a spontaneous gripe, in the moment.
@@ChrisDembinsky I understand now, I would have reacted the same way. Thank you for clarifying that. Well, The S.S United States in going to be sunk as an artificial reef. You might want to see if you can get in on that.
@@mikeglenn3333 Do you know where yet?
@@ChrisDembinsky I think it's going to be somewhere off Florida, I'm not too sure yet, They are prepping it right now.

Why do these people sink ships instead of recycling all the materials?
This type of artificial reef is very effective at creating marine habitat. It's also one of the more popular and cost-effective types of reef construction targeted for fishermen and divers. This ship is 120' long so maybe 150 toms of steel. Steel at the moment is something like $200 a ton. So the scrap steel value is maybe $30,000. So someone in the need of raw materials would be better off buying it from another source.
The recycling of ships is often done In places with little to no environmental restrictions and as such is very damaging to the environment. Often the ships are just cut up on a beach with all the oils just drained into the ocean. Sinking of ships is normally done in a very professional way that minimizes environmental impact and so is often the better way to go. It also creates a nice artificial reef for sea life to live in.
Poor old ship. Seems like a waste of resources not to scrap it and recycle the metal.
R.I.P LADY. P. THE BUETIFUL SHIP
А зачем их топить, если можно переплавить металл и сделать ещё одно судно или ещё что-нибудь
The government wanted to make sure that this ship did not get sold back to smugglers. also, there are very few materials that make good artificial reefs that don't endanger the environment.
@@ChrisDembinsky write it in Russian

Excellent video. It would've been better if that boater hadn't been in the way.
Why couldn't we just chop it up as scrap metal?
Because they wanted a fish habitat and dive site.
@@ScubaViz
Ok thanks 😊
@@GotLove4All It is interesting that many people have commented about the value of the metal.
@@ScubaViz
Well.........no so much the value of the metal. It can be recycled. I was thinking more of our oceans being a dumping ground for man made junk. There's pollution everywhere. Water, land, air and there's even man made space junk in our atmosphere. I stead of working to clean up our planet, Martians are now ducking our space junk thinking "WTF". Hahaha
But seriously, humans looks to be a cancer in this section of the universe. Hopefully we don't encounter any celestial clean up crews to exterminate us all. Just my thoughts on this matter. Certainly not looking for a fight from who disagrees. "Seems to be the only solution nowadays".
@@GotLove4All If it makes you feel better about this reefed ship, they thoroughly clean it before it's sunk. This includes removing everything that is not made of approved materials, like plastics, and removing all oils and fuels.

Doe everything have to be done in the presence of two hundred Cops in the US?
Not sure where you got that number; most of those boats look like personal watercraft there for a show.
And, you'll need some sort of authority keeping people back, otherwise you're too likely to have at least one dumbass (probably flying a Trump flag) getting too close with their boat and possibly getting hooked on the sinking ship, or swamped, and then they'll sue because nobody stopped them.
It’s like from a cartoon
Why do we sink ships
Ships are a low-cost way to create a large artificial reef that will attract and provide habitat for larger fish. When partnered with concrete reef material it can provide the maximum amount of biodiversity in one location.
Doesn’t look like a good place to dive
It's not too bad most of the year. This video is what it looks like much of the time. It's no Grand Cayman. ruclips.net/video/jKhpA4DaxRY/видео.html

One of the funny things in these sinking videos is that, the illiterate environmentalists will come up and whine, "oh you are ruining the ocean". lol.
I don't know about these people's thoughts but I think sinking a huge cargo ship is littering. And it's damaging the ocean
You're not alone in this though and others have posted similar comments. I recommend watching one of the videos showing how wonderful the reef is. Do you consider a bird house littering? This ship is basically a gigantic bird house but for fish :)

Legal way to pollute the ocean.
It’s a metal ship.
Why sinking a old Ship or Boat like that, why not bringing it ashore and demolish it there,I don,t think this will be good for a sea or ocean
Watch some of my other videos and you'll see how much the fish and environment like it. I think there's some links in the comments. Think of it as a tourist attraction.
You are thinking based on your knoweldge, or the lack of it. There is no environmental hazard dumping steel into ocean. Everything bad for the ecosystem were already removed.
