We started our chow chow on going to the groomers when he was very young. He ended up bonding to this one groomer and allowed her to wash and care for him. He wouldn't let any other groomer touch him. He would growl and scare them. He built a reputation at the groomers. It really helped that she was an experienced groomer and loved him.

It was tough to get it from them & toss over fence to field where it hopefully survived, I'm unsure they forgave me. Kept staring at area of fence we took their toy and tossed it in for a long time
When we had our chows, when guests was were invited into the house, we told our guests do not make any quick movements or noises, our chows stood ready to react.

They can be around strangers. And my babies train easily. My top pack member sleeps with me. I take 4 of mine to a groomer. They do great. Two no, they don’t want to be touched.

Agree in general ❤❤❤ and then... I would add this. Not for cats. Yeah, you need to socialize or train for cats and I think that you need that for all dogs. But to add, I have a chow I rescued when he was estimated 5 years old, untrained history (didn't even know collars or leashes) and rated "aggressive" at the shelter. But he was instantly attached to me (just me) and when I introduced my cats, gradually, the rule was being set that he should leave them be. He respected me so I was able to do this. It IS possible with the right situation to even train an adult Chow to respect your cats. 4 years after his rescue and he's still completely trustworthy about my cats. Can't read them? well, you can, but to do this you need to make it your task to learn to read them. I think that reading your Chow is key because they are giving you information all the time and if you don't pay attention, you will be surprised when they have to escalate to more obvious cues. People get mad when a dog growls at them, but 99% they will have given you a clue first that they didn't like what was happening. And even then, the growl is just a vocal cue because you missed the body language. Take it for what it is. I think one of the things I love the most about Chows is that they are always challenging me to be the best dog mom. Dogs speak another language and have different cultural rules. Make the effort to learn their culture and their language if you want to share your life with them. Affection? Yeah, they're pretty independent but also, my Chows are instantly excited that I came home, and they follow me around the house most of the time. Sometimes they just laze instead, but that's the exception. Mine are socialized with people and dogs, and they enjoy the dog park and every sort of situation, as long as they're with me. They just want to be with their human leader. But you are COMPLETELY ACCURATE about this - they do not tolerate any crap from a human. It's a trust based relationship. You are the leader, but you must be a good leader and a fair leader. If you break trust with a Chow you will not have the same relationship. Mine allow me to make a few small mistakes and are willing to forgive, but I would never want to truly break that trust. This is not a Golden Retriever. They don't just put up with stupid humans. 😂 But both my dogs are SUPER affectionate. If you are not up to the job, the commitment, for a lifetime. If you are not ready for a "level 10 dog" then don't get a Chow. It's not fair to them if you just get them because they're cute - not if you can't be what they need in a leader.
How gorgeous your Gust is! He looks like a bear cub. I like Chows because they look like teddy bears. Although I prefer a smooth female, I can’t keep a real one. But thanks for your advice. June of London, UK
@@lovelyperez1687 I don't mean to intrude on your discussion - I hope my comment adds value to what Gust The Chow Chow might say: if you want to know about the lineage and history of the sire and dam, the breeder you are interacting with should be able to provide this information. If the breeder does not have this information, or they refuse to provide this information - they are not a breeder, but rather a puppy-mill only seeking profit - no dog from a puppy-mill will exhibit breed-standards that you are seeking. A breeder of good reputation will be registered with the regional kennel-association (for example, the Canadian Kennel Club), and all of their dogs will be registered and will have probably completed at least conformation-showing, and will have their lineage-documents registered by the kennel-association. With animals such as the Chow Chow, it certainly is foolish to encourage puppy-milling, and even more foolhardy to acquire a dog from a puppy-mill - it is irresponsible since the puppy-mills produce unreliable and unpredictable animals, and with larger dogs like Chows, this could have very tragic results.

Thank you so much for the information. I noticed that your chow chow has a lot of tears, have you take him to the vet is that or is it natural? My chow chow has a lot of tears and I’m very concerned.
We had to have surgery for our one chow for entropion, where eyelashes are turned in and irritate or scratch cornea of eye(s). Our other chow never had that issue but did have deep tear tracks more like a crusting vs watery, and detested or should I say would not allow warm water compress/washing of area. With my two as well, it seemed seasonal and at the worst in Spring

Mine always greets me with plenty of kisses and wants to be picked up for even more kisses, I watch plenty of videos and this behavior is unlike the normal chow, I love my loki 🥰
Yes. They tend to get hip dysplasia. We had to get our chow puppy hip surgery as a pup to prevent hip dysplasia. Our vet said it was better to get the surgery dont while they're young before they get older and have hip problems. Plus, surgery cost will be more expensive once the actual dysplasia takes place.
I agree but bringing ur chow to a groomer from when its a pup is crucial! Especially when ur not being able to care for it anymore u will be sure it can get the care it needs pretty quickly. Mine is used to it, I can do it myself, but I bring him to the groomer too. He doesnt care actually because he know he can choose the most tasty bone afterwards.
I just got a chow chow myself, he’s about 10 weeks old, as soon as I brought him home, he went into hiding. What does this mean? Any help? Advice? Insight?
Technically, we had 4 choose. I was away in the service. He is right. They do not forget. We lost one, tragically, long sad story. Tore KY mother up. Mother named the last chow. CHANG. got a Christmas card pic of Chang. He was still a puppy. Most beautiful thing I ever saw! Dogs went to live a friend. Chang went on to be the top stud dog in North America! Saw him when out of service. He just returned from Canada, doing his thing. He weighed about 110 lbs
Thank you for this well articulated and very insightful video! Your care to point out just how unique a dog the Chow Chow is, and how supremely dedicated to their "special human" they can be is very on point - and very important. I hope you and your special friend enjoy many heart-overflowing memories together!
😢 I'm sorry. I know some Chows could have bad breeding or neurological problems but usually a bite still won't happen unless you are not understanding the dog's messages. I tell people who see mine and say they want one... this is a level 10 dog (I used to say level 8, but my vet said nah, they're 10) - If you are not super experienced in how to handle difficult breeds, it's not a good idea to have one of these. But they can be really rewarding if you are the right match. I'm sorry about what happened with your mom.

I know what you saying there big dogs in fact mine was one of the biggest ones you would ever see but there a awesome family dog I’m just putting it out there samoyeds are really good to i love the way they sing
Chow is probably not a good dog to start with if it's going to be your first dog. Their temperament isn't the same as others.
I had 3.all together…what this chap says is accurate….mine were my true lifelong friends ❤️
How old is he on this video & what color is he black or blue? Thanks! God bless you brother.
He is About 7months And his colour is blue
@@gustthechowchow885 I am from US can you recommend someone where I can have a family chowchow
So sorry i live in belgium
Where can I get one? From texas
My chow looks EXACTLY like this one! So beautiful 💕
Where did you get your. Chow from I'm looking to buy one
I had two chows(pure),,,my first one was brown i named him little bear, my second one was black I named her midnight
Mine always greets me with plenty of kisses and wants to be picked up for even more kisses, I watch plenty of videos and this behavior is unlike the normal chow, I love my loki 🥰
Video ended abruptly chow chow was done sitting **chomp chomp on his hand***
Super informative video! Love your accent!
Well I love cats so they sound perfect
Any bone development issues or eye problems so far, I heard they get hip issues easily ?
No gust have had no issues.
My chow chow is 35( one is 12, one is 15, 2 are 3 and our puppy is 1) so adding all of them is 35
Hey what Happens to the dog ? Why no More Videos ?
I agree but bringing ur chow to a groomer from when its a pup is crucial!
Especially when ur not being able to care for it anymore u will be sure it can get the care it needs pretty quickly.
Mine is used to it, I can do it myself, but I bring him to the groomer too.
He doesnt care actually because he know he can choose the most tasty bone afterwards.
After owning a female pup i agree with all he says, they are unique 👍
Can you please tell me where to get a chow chow
I just got a chow chow myself, he’s about 10 weeks old, as soon as I brought him home, he went into hiding. What does this mean? Any help? Advice? Insight?
Give him some time to adjust to his new home
I have a chow chow there so cute
My Samson love everybody strangers kids and all dogs no bad dogs just bad owners give them love that what we all want right ❤😊🎉
Lâchez le, il a chaud , il veut descendre et dormir un peu , nous avons compris . Merci 👍

Love your vids gust, lovely blue chow what’s his name?
The dogs name is Gust
Very accurate description.
how old is this chow in the video? :P
4 months
@@gustthechowchow885 , he's absolutely gorgeous!
😂😂😂😂chow is not the type to sit on ur lap. 😂😂😂but chow sat there throughout
Thank you!
How is the shedding is there consistent hair on you? Do they shed consistently/daily ?
No gust almost doesnt shed. We brush him twive a week
Yes. They shed. My chow chow shed and didn't like to be brushed.
It's seasonal
Technically, we had 4 choose. I was away in the service. He is right. They do not forget. We lost one, tragically, long sad story. Tore KY mother up. Mother named the last chow. CHANG. got a Christmas card pic of Chang. He was still a puppy. Most beautiful thing I ever saw! Dogs went to live a friend. Chang went on to be the top stud dog in North America! Saw him when out of service. He just returned from Canada, doing his thing. He weighed about 110 lbs
what do I do if my fiancé is allergic to dogs and cats ?!
Go meet the dog or cat upfrond and see your fiance reaction
Hebben chow chows veel haar uitval?
Dit valt goed mee. Maar je moet ze wel tijdig borstelen
He says if your looking for a dog that cudles dont get this one well hes cudling with one
the dog sits on my lap for a few minutes. cudling with a dog means that the dog stays on your lap for a long time, and chows don't do that
Half way through the video the dog wants to get down from the mans lap.....let the dog down...he is panting and may want a drink.
Thank you for this well articulated and very insightful video!
Your care to point out just how unique a dog the Chow Chow is, and how supremely dedicated to their "special human" they can be is very on point - and very important.
I hope you and your special friend enjoy many heart-overflowing memories together!
I had a coworker who had one her chowchow was so sweet until one day it just bit her out of nowhere she had to have stitches lol
The dog wants down!
He looks alot like my chow.very intelligent animal.seethat face the laws were at my house after dar,k my teddy came walking out of the dark scared theshit out of them
Thanks for sharing
CHOWS know WHO THEY ARE !! MORE BEAR THAN CAT ...... OR DOG !!
I have a red smooth chow, third chow in a row. Love the breed. ❤🦁🐻
Also, did/does your chow have eye problems? Ours gets teary-eyed and his lashes had to be operated because they were growing inwards.
Also he was reading online just check on that website
the reading is from a autocue
I love my Chow. He's very nice to my son and I. I have to watch, muzzle or crate him because he has mauled my Staffordshire bull terrier on several occasions or when I am not watching him. He also is sometimes violent to my teacup Pomeranian or teacup Morkie. My daughter and wife are also afraid of Teddy 🧸 because of how he mauled or Staffy.
Cute chow.
Free Gust! Lol
Good boy!
Definitely doesn't want to be on his lap because a chow is not a lap dog😀
ive never had a chow, but it would definately be in my dream pack if i could have a bunch of dogs haha.. a great looking and amusing dog
or maybe i shouldv said dream household, rather than pack
You are wrong.. I raised 9.. mine obeyed and trained easy
Have a chow doesn’t let me feel I have a dog but have a son
My chow is the exact opposite 😭
