Tip for not wasting good models for these tests: buy packs of medieval or modern army men. They are waaaaaaay cheaper and aside from the faces, they are detailed enough to assess the coverage and efficacy of washes or speed paints.
very excited to see this, i recently bought a ton of old gw washes of a friend who didnt want them so im set for a few more years, but as you said it's awesome to know that there is a propper alternative now. if they only added a version of casandora yellow and coelia green shade then it would be perfect cause those are my two most used colors. but knowing Duncan they will probably be soon to follow with how fast this range has been growing.
I love use the yellow and green as glazes to enhance my shadows and highlights, the green is great for a spooky night time feel and the yellow just is sunlight in a bottle.
I have a lot of trouble justifying duncan rhodes paints, the price per ml is huge, but ive been really looking at the scale 75 drop and paint line, its just not availablel yet
Good washes, dodgy dropper bottles, expensive for the quantity. To stop the ball bearing from clogging the pour hole, after shaking the bottle, place a neodymium magnet on the base of the bottle, and magnet attraction will save the day.
They are the best washes I’ve ever tried, I agree the TTC droppers are kind of terrible. The other problem I have is the price and amount. Army Painter has great washes too, and they’re in 18ml bottles too
I've recently been travelling between two different states and none of the shops in either have anything but wave 1. Supposedly it's because the US distributor just isn't distributing it for some reason. Or so I heard from a TTC rep at a GW open a few months back. They are supposed to be ending their contract with them, asmodee(?, I don't remember) and getting a new one. I'm less sure on this because the time frame that guy gave, supposedly he got that from Duncan himself, was for October-ish and thay doesn't seem to have happened.
I love these washes 2, seems like they changed the recipe for the Battlemud wash? Mine has a more green tint to it. I completely agree about the mess in the lids, to the point where some of my more heavily used ones almost have the lids stuck on from dried paint
I really personally like AP Fanatic washes. They don't tint the surface too much, darken the recesses and dry matte. These ones are too tinting, they look almost like a normal layer paint 1:20 with a glaze medium. 😮
Oh I love these washes! I never vibed well with the new washes. They certainly work, but they're not for me. TTC's stuff behaves pretty excellently in my book. They're a bit more satin than old GW washes were in my experience, but I varnish my models when I'm done painting so it hardly matters. The TTC paints also rock. Very consistent in behaviour from paint to paint. And the triad system is a very nice guide for selecting colours.
I'd love to swap my citadel range for these but unfortunately they're not sold in North America, might as well Europe exclusive unless you got into the Kickstarter (where the shipping & duty fees were insane).
I second your thoughts on Coelia Greenshade. I loved that wash. The good news is, just like Agrax Earthsade and Athonian Camo, Coelia is a mix of several of the other base washes. I dont remember the exact formula but I have made it and the others on a few occasions when I couldn't get ahold of it. The same may be true for the TTCs range as well. As always, Juan, I love your product reviews - thanks for this one. I will probably pick up a set on your recommendation.
I love the new GW washes because I want the least amount of tinting as possible. I would rather just paint a certain color then have to worry about color matching a tinted color. I'm more interested in actual shading and can correct the finish with some varnish anyways.
Same, the new ones feel more like an actual shading tool. The old ones felt more like a really rough, coffee stain-prone prototype of what became Contrast paints. I know some people liked the surface tinting and found ways to make it work, but the new ones do what I always wanted the old ones to do, without having to manually paint into every recess and clean up tide marks later. Also, even as someone who leans more towards advanced painting, techniques that create nigh-unreproducible colours annoy me to death, and I use them as little as I can get away with, haha
Que yo sepa Goblin eran los únicos y si dejaron de traer pq la gente no las compraba. Es una pena pq son una alternativa mejor a Citadel pero aquí por la importación estaban más caras que incluso citadel y eso evidentemente las mató.
The citadel ones are betterto shade metallics because these will dry too mat and dull down the metallic paint too much, whilst citadel are more satin. BTW the TTC purple wash doesn't look as consistent as the rest
Funny enough the purple is because of the model, metal models are awful sadly and because primer adheres worse to them that also means the paint ok top behaves worse
Haven't used Citadel washes in over a decade. Been using the Army Painter tones and washes, when used correctly, with a drop of matt medium and some water, they are the best washes on the market
This isn't quite the "complete" set. There were four more washes in Wave 3 Two Thin Coats that close some of the gap: smoke grey, yellow, turquoise and bone. I also feel the lack of a Coelia Green equivalent. It was my favorite.
Hmm, I have an FLGS that has Duncan's paints, but they're pretty slow on restocking them. I still have some of those old big pot Citadel washes, but they're dwindling fast. Tried Army Painter's, and while the black is fine, there's something about the color of the strong tone (brown wash) that's not to my liking. It's cooler than Agrax, so it's kind of counterproductive when I'm trying to keep the overall tone more warm by not using straight black!
yo he usado los metálicos de este rango y mucho mejor que los de citadel, ojala les copiaran la formula, pero me parecen mucha mejor alternativa si lo que quieres es tener equivalentes de citadel

Glad you have come around to my view on the GW wash change ! I remember arguing on the sheen and tint on the video you did on them on release in the comments. Looks like a good alternative to the old washes
Man, these really don't look like washes, they feel a heck of a lot more like a modern speed paint compared to what I would think of as a wash. The tinting is so heavy and opaque!
No, there's no jumping ship. As I've always done I use and showcase products from all companies and in fact I will be featuring Vallejo products in the next video alongside Citadel and TTC
You should check what the union is looking for in terms of boycotts. It's never a given that a union wants people to abandon a product when they're taking industrial action - those workers want those jobs to exist, at the end of the day. Last I checked, they weren't calling for a boycott.
"I think they are way better than they, now deceased, counterparts" 😂 All of my shades are the old ones and is what I'm used to. I purchased a reikland fleshshade when I heard they changed the formulas(supposedly to better) and it was horrendous for what I was painting, gold. I need that warm tint on the base color, not only the shading on the recesses. It is good to know that there is an alternative available and if they work better, that's a bonus.
I will try them for sure at some point. I've been using contrasts diluted with lahmian medium to shade and glaze too. This last year I've been trying the renewed Vallejo Game Color range and I loved it. And I'm happy to have some of the old Citadel colors equivalents again. I just purchased some Ak interactive paints now to try them. Let's see how it goes.

The ball bearing makes perfect sense for super thick, creamy things, but in a wash?!
It can definitely help but it's a problem in all paints from TTC and their dropper design
I wish the Two Thin Coats paint range was more accessible in North America :(
Several people have suggested different retailers for the US
I'm in a medium-sized US city and at least one of our local hobby and comic book stores carries Two Thin Coats.
I've recently been travelling between two different states and none of the shops in either have anything but wave 1.
Supposedly it's because the US distributor just isn't distributing it for some reason. Or so I heard from a TTC rep at a GW open a few months back. I really personally like AP Fanatic washes. They don't tint the surface too much, darken the recesses and dry matte.
These ones are too tinting, they look almost like a normal layer paint 1:20 with a glaze medium. 😮
I totally get that, I prefer this ones but actually use the AP washes for metallics instead.

That is a shame indeed
? Two Thin Coats are DEFINITELY sold in North America. Every game store I've been to sells TTC paints
That's just false. Miniature Market carries them, as do a number of online sellers.
@spencerarmstrong258 good to know as another viewer was asking just that!

Love the color choice in the QR code for Tacticus :D
Necrosis Green is really nice. It looks a bit more brown than Athonian Camoshade, which is great.
Some of the hues change a bit but IMO, all for the best

That's a perfectly good take! Each person has different needs and it's great that nowadays we can basically have all options covered.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Yea, not to dog on these washes, I own the whole set too.

La tienda El Quinto Elemento de Zaragoza tiene esta gama de pinturas y va reponiendo existencias.
some of these washes are stronger than xpress contrasts, same sort of application i suppose too. I do like that matte finish
The finish is indeed excellent and they can for sure be used as a thin contrast
thank you for the great reviews! also cool to see some old 'Brotherhood" minis

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures good to know. Do you prefer casted resin over metal minis for pure painting technical reasons?
@hav6301 for painting technical reasons and for everything else. If I can't get plastic, resin is the next best alternative
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures curious, as so many people prefer metal over resin and some old school people even over plastic
@hav6301 it's just nostalgia, pure and simple. Metal is objectively the worst material for miniatures
Would love to see you compare them to the Vallejo & Army Painter washes
No need to, these are better. I like the AP washes for metallics but that's it.
How do you use Magi Purple to shade red?
Do they have a thinning medium like the old lahmian?
That's a great question!! And sadly one I don't have an answer for, but hopefully a kind viewer will let us know
Yes, Spirit Medium. I haven't used it much (nor did I use Lahmian much, just not how I work)
Thanks for the answer!

I'm sure they are the same. I need to get them too.
Is there a good online retailer for Two Thing Coats paints in the US?
Apparently a couple people commented there are indeed several retailers. I suggest you check the comment section.
I'm dumb, and still not sure whether the Two Thin Coats is regular paint, wash or Contrast-like
