I'm glad someone finally decided to cover this game. It's crazy to think there are next to no review/critique videos on SRB2, being near enough one of the best Sonic games in existence. Incredible work; I'm certain this'll turn many heads towards this projects direction.
And this game has been around since around the same time as Sonic Adventure so when this project was conceived there was no real frame of reference for 3D Sonic gameplay.
It's worth noting that, despite 20 years of development and a huge amount of content, SRB2 isn't even considered complete yet. There's supposed to be 3 acts of Red Volcano, plus 2 additional zones after it: Dark City and Grand Eggship. The current final boss is actually the Dark City boss, and it's being used as a placeholder since both Dark City and the true final boss of the game don't exist yet. I think one interesting thing to look at is how the game has changed over the past updates. Castle Eggman is almost unrecognizable compared to what it started as. Other zones, like Deep Sea Zone 2, for example, were partially overhauled in 2.2, but some older sections remain in the level since their replacements were not finished in time. Notably, Egg Rock has hardly changed since 2.0... in fact, all that's changed is that they've *removed* sections of the level to make it easier. You might notice that there are almost no slopes in Egg Rock. That's because Egg Rock's initially released level design predates slopes, and unlike the other levels, it has not yet received an overhaul. (One was planned for 2.2, but was delayed due to growing scope.) The next update is certainly going to be a big one. Improved slope physics + momentum and an overhaul to Sonic's special air ability are both being worked on right now. Depending on how this goes, it may necessitate tweaking all the existing levels. wiki.srb2.org/wiki/In_development This video (except for 0:46 to 1:35, which is just mods) collects some dev footage of things being worked on in 2.3: ruclips.net/video/m5TJ6m65wzs/видео.html There's also a Greenflower Zone 2 revamp that's been making the rounds on the internet, but I have no clue where it came from nor whether it's an official preview made by the SRB2 dev team. ruclips.net/video/LQ-dlgVcZdw/видео.html

Nice review, I would like to add on since, I played srb2 since v2.1. I feel that Egg Slimer can vary in difficulty depending on what character you are, such as Fang or Amy. I wish there was an option for newcomers playing the tutorial to have one for Tails and Knuckles to better understand how they play. Some levels can lag if your computer isn't that buff, the biggest example being Castle Eggman Zone 2. Though I agree that Red Volcano Zone should more acts, I feel that Egg Rock zone is the most under developed in the game, since almost nothing has changed in the level design compared to the version seen in v2.1. On top of that Egg Rock Zone was originally going to have a gravity boss fight, which can be download on the srb2 mods. The worst part about of all to me is how tokens behave after collecting all the emeralds, in v2.1 you get 50 rings but in v2.2 you just continues which is a huge downgrade to me. I still give the game an 8/10 regardless though
I feel that I could have given this review a better treatment if I played 2.1 previously after reading your comment, so I am really thankful that you pointed out the changes and criticism from 2.1 to 2.2, will remember this and will do a better review next time. I would love if we could chat about this game indepth just for a future revision of this review, because I know that you can give a lot of info on the table that will be useful for me in a future re-make of this review. Thank you again Sonickid!
If I remember correctly, one of the minor updates changes that behavior with the tokens; Instead of giving you a continue, they now give you an Extra Life (which, in multiplayer games with infinite live pools, means they give you 100 Rings). Personally I think it's *miles* better to see them give you Lives instead of Continues, although I still would personally prefer 50 Rings out of... I suppose tradition and convenience, but getting lives out of them is still convenient, I'd say.
Im glad you did this game because i wouldn't have found your channel if you didn't but this game is amazing and its crazy how long they've been working on it and great video by the way
Wow, somebody actually talking about SRB2. As I'm sure you've noticed by now this game is criminally underrated and every single time somebody mentions it all the SRB2 fans come out of the woodwork to say how good it is, which is ALL deserved. The multiplayer content is also quite fun, featuring race modes, various PVP modes like CTF + Deathmatch modes that play like FPS shooters (if you switch to first person) and other things like hide and seek. I've had a lot of fun with it. Something to note about the Egg Slimer is that the purple goop in THZ used to be dangerous and act exactly like lava, which is why the "purple goop" in that boss hurts you. It is the easiest boss though. Another cool piece of trivia is that the second challenge stage, Aerial Garden, was actually originally a mod, and was added to the base game in 2.2. Similarly, the 3D models included in 2.2.7 (i think) onwards are also fanmade and added later. There's also SRB2Kart, a fully fledged mod of the game (that you mentioned briefly) that turns it into a full on kart racer that is comparable to Mariokart imo (its very fun). I could gush about both these games for so long bc they are just really cool, well done, long standing projects. EDIT: Editing to also add how much I like the FPS controls used here using keyboard and mouse. I started playing this game with controller but after switching to keyboard+ mouse I can never go back and even wish I could use it on other 3D platformers on console just due to how much control you get.
Red volcano zone act 1 is still not finished and act 2 is in the works, this zone will be comepleted in the next 2.3 update. And in 2.3 they are going to add 2 more zones, slopes that works like the classic sonic games and a true final boss
1. Uh, try using the Simple gamestyle if you are using a controller. 2. WeLl AkTuAlLy, the purple water is goop. 3. RVZ is unfinished. Acts 2 and 3 still are yet to be added. 4. Brak Eggman's "force field" is an electric barrier.
You can also get the time & rings emblem (or score when up against a boss) in the save file, which for time is more usefull because th3n you can somewhat calculate in roughly how much 5ime you need to reach a certain in order to have enough time to make it to the end Not to mention, when you die or retry (which also costs a life) & go back to a checkpoint The timer goes back to what it was when ya touched it, meaning that, for example, if from the last checkpoint to the end will take you about 1 minute & 30 second & you need to beat the level in 3 minutes & 30 second, you need to get to the last checkpoint in about 2 minutes & if you do, you can just lose 1 of your lives redo only that section, instead of the whole level
the best 3D Sonic fan game I'm my opinion. The stages are very cool makes me want to explore everything looking for secrets has a good replay factor being able to play with 6 characters each with an exclusive path , Levels with a good level design are everything very beautiful even though the game doesn't have an alternate final boss, it still has a lot of content, secret levels, new special stages secret characters and More. The game is so good that the guys had the courage to port the game to the switch. My favorite zone is Arid Canyon beautiful gráfics and a lot Of paths. Best song is Toxic plateau.
The super form limitations make sense Tails can only go super in the classic games if he gets the super emeralds not chaos emeralds Fang and Amy probably wouldn't even know how to use the emeralds power like that metal has shown a understanding of the emeralds before knuckles being a guardian of a even bigger emerald so makes enough sense if you ask me
@@coolkidtheultimategamer4270 for ps4 controllers I recommend using ds4 windows but for xbox it's just as simple as hooking up the controller with usb or bluetooth, mapping your buttons and changing the gameplay mode to simple same with ps4 after you download ds4 windows drivers
the worst part about the bosses in my opinion is that they just give you 10 rings instead of having rings scattered throughout the level to begin with.
Yeah, I can see why you wouldn't like that. Being able to obtain rings when you actually need them vs having all of them already within you compeltely changes your approach to the bosses, instead of being "Gonna get 1 ring only so if I get hit it's easier to grab it and if I loose it I can go to get another one" it's more like "If I get hit I better get all or I will be fucked", should have mentioned this in my review.
Lol try the Sea Egg in 2.1, that boss is hell Edit: And both DSZ and CEZ are the epitome of lag in multiplayer. In fact, now that I think about it, DSZ 1-ERZ 1 is bound to cause resynch and lag in online multiplayer.
Honestly I dont mind the limitations of super forms. Actually i think it makes sense. Because tails never turned super in 2. Only in 3 because the super emeralds hold more power than the normal emeralds. Fang doesn't know that the emeralds have magic abilities, he only thinks they're gems to collect and sell for money. Amy... ...I'm not so sure about amy-

Really liked this fan game up until the 5th location. The difficulty and speed vs. platforming balance were both pretty much perfect in zone 4 and then it feels like they didn't really know what to do from there. Also the 4 classic games had a green hill themed start so it seems pretty in place as a classic game
