She has a thriving business despite her surroundings. Both she and her husband are incredibly friendly and helpful. I really doubt this was the "highlight of their month" considering those things.
@Vinnie Provolone i mean he probably did/does. Most people do. One of the worst things that box stores/culture has done is concince people that off the rack fits anyone. Seriously pick out your favourite outfit, take it to a tailor/alterations store, and for literally pocket change you will get back properly fitted clothes that will have you standing out as the best dressed person in the room for any occasion. Like whenever i buy anything i take it to the alterations shop in my local shop, slap down $10 CAD(about 7USD), give them my number and measurements, and in a week i have nicely fitted clothes that don't look like they came from the discount bin at walmart(which they probably actually did). My yearly clothing budget is about $200(140USD) including socks every month, and yet people/friends/coworkers always comment and how i always dress so nicely. TL;DR get your clothes fitted, unless you want to look like one of those unisex display mannequins that nothing ever seems to fit right on.
Movie Theaters give a very underrated amount of life to a mall. The mall in my area once had businesses change in its theater and while it was shut down and being renovated the mall was a ghost town but then when the new theater opened traffic exploded.
My local mall was built in the 80s with a theater that then moved to a location right outside the mall till 2007 when it moved back into a dead Lazarus.
I worked at a cinema in slow/dying mall (before its being renovated) this is the truth. But, we were in a tourist heavy area so we naturally brought in a lot of business.
Mine was a Walmart there was a second entrance on the mall where it connected to the food court then they moved it make it bigger and the food court was demolished and the restaurants moved out it was replaced with a target old navy and rue 21 that don’t connect inside the mall you have to leave it with 3 restaurants left in the mid 10’s one pizza placed moved out and a pretzel place moved into there from the opposite and the rue 21 moved into the mall I personally think the Walmart moving out was a big mistake for the mall today it was dead when I visited it on a Saturday but it was summer when the college kids were out soooo but dying nonetheless
I'm mostly mourning the loss of RadioShack. I have a certificate in Radio/Television repair. RadioShack made that possible, and the staff were usually pretty cool about not narking to the FCC.
Makes me sad. I think it's a natural reaction. Thinking of all the joy and energy malls used to have.. and now we just say snarky things online in the solitude of our homes. Pretty creepy all around.
REALLY loved how you included some footage of you speaking with employees in the mall. This is deffinately one of the most dead and depressing malls you've ever filmed. Im SO happy the dead mall series is back though!
I never understood why American malls always put the anchor stores on the outside of a mall. Wouldn't it be more profitable for the smaller stores if they were in the middle? But and dying malls here just have a huge chunk of them turned into a TK Maxx.
+Larry Bundy Jr you're everywhere I seem to go today... There is a mall in downtown Milwaukee Wisconsin called the "Shops of Grand Avenue" It was the first mall to have what people now know as a food court, it's also the biggest one in Wisconsin. When it started to die in the mid 90's the management company tried to save by redoing the center court of the historic shopping arcade section of the mall into a TJ Maxx. (basically they ripped all the little stores out and made it a big space) To say the least the mall is dead except for office workers getting lunch. According to my cousin who lives close by.
Actually corporations and globalism to devalue wages and kill the middle class resulted in almost everyone unable to afford to shop at malls. People don't shop in malls because they cannot afford to, they would have died since everyone shops at discount stores now even without the internet. The sickness runs deep but because it doesn't effect boomers nothing will ever be done about it, especially with votes.
Just found your channel. After watching this I searched for Alterations by Soula on Facebook and was happy to see they moved the business and seem to be doing well!
It never occurred to me when watching through your earlier dead mall series videos but conducting interviews with whoever still operates in the mall is a great inclusion and definitely adds a certain perspective to the history of the place. Also, on the depressing scale, I'd say tri-state still takes the cake.
Dan, I think you should get with more people in you video's. They can tell you their story and how lo g they have been there. You speaking with the 2 people is the BEST part of this video. I LOVED it. I hope you can speak with others in future video's.
I just want to know why the uploader or whoever used a clip of the Manson girls in the intro. I get that that were happy and stuff there but omg that's such an odd choice
I feel sorry for the couple doing alterations. Even if business for them is good, that mall is closing in the near future. I hope they can afford to move.
The 80s were the worst decade of my life. Screw the 80s. They started and ended with recessions. People were divorcing like crazy. Feathered hair, acid wash denim, The Cosbys, etc.
+Tonya Gullino Lol once i walked into a radio-shack and the cashier was trying to recruit me to join a group that was going on a spiritual journey to Africa. I declined but the cashier was very persistent. He eventually gave up when he found out I was 14. He never did go into the details of what they were doing in Africa.
I love your openings. I always think I'm seeing a legit commercial and then along comes Charles Manson's family members singing in the LA Courthouse in 1969. I think you also showed Bob Crane's last picture in one of your Dead Motel Series. Your vids are great and so is your sense of humor.
Very interesting. People keep asking how the mall can remain open with just Radio Shack and poor Georg and Sula in there. Most malls these days are owned by large property corporations that own multiple properties. So, as long as they have enough successful properties, the failing ones can be left to sit. The losses are just a part of their balance sheet. Typically, if you see a place sit like this it's because it would cost more to demolish it than it does to let it sit. Also, they often hold out for the municipality to either offer to buy the bad property, or offer some kind of tax rebate to redevelop, or assistance with paying for demolition. Georg and Sula seem like great people and they seem to have plenty of business, hopefully they can stay or if the mall finally closes they can find a new place.
twogreatguitars i work for one of those property corporations and that’s absolutely true- even some of the worst malls with the lowest occupancy do well in terms of numbers. they key is attracting and keeping national tenants.
I miss when theaters where still inside malls. Mom would need something at the mall and you would try to drag her by the theater on your way out hoping you could talk her in to taking you to see something. You were only successful about 50% of the time but when you were.. BEST. FEELING. EVER. That was long before stadium seating but I ain't even mad about it.
@SPAZE PARANOIDS !!!! ! All your anti-internet comments are so cringe. If you were alive in the 20s I bet you would've been one of those old geezers complaining about how the radio and jazz music is "corrupting" the youth 🙄 Times change, whether you like it or not. You can choose to adapt and survive, or live in denial and get left behind in the past just like these dead malls. There are plenty of malls still alive and well in todays era because they decided to change with the times and adapt. All the booming internet business and ecommerce sites now will face the same fate as these dead malls in 40 years if they don't adapt too. Just the way the world works.
@SPAZE PARANOIDS !!!! ! Aww, did you get mad because I challenged your ignorant world view with facts? Cry moar your tears are my sustenance sweetie :)
thoes 2 were totally fine with being on camera and giving u a tour around the mall that is amazing cause most people would not want to be on camera which id love to meet thoes 2
im a lower delaware native - the rehoboth mall got shut down for a variety of reasons and probably the most important was a sexual molestation that happened in one of the mall bathrooms which if memory serves me right happened at least twice. that stopped most people from going to the mall and then with the absurd number of so called factory "outlets" that went up nearby, online shopping and add wealthy out of state owners that have no intention of doing anything with the mall, you have the empty mall. the so called "outlets" are a joke and only tourists spend money in those places but hey, if you need 2 left foot converse sneakers size 17 in bright orange only, you can get them at the outlets for $9.99 tax-free delaware is also a joke - all prices from milk to gasoline are jacked up to get more than you would have paid in your own state - so yeah, keep coming to tax free delaware for your shopping needs. stupid. people spend more on gas getting here and back home that any direct sales taxes they would have paid to stay home and shop - its pure marketing hype which seems to work in todays world. you dont think - you just do what you are told. welcome to delaware.
Voice in the Wilderness wow. you are a breath of fresh air! actual thought and expression from someone who didn't just ATTEND school.. but payed attention, a little bit. some of the posters haven't been, it seems. thanx.
I always throught it was appropriate they the state has the word "ware" in its name, since nobody knows "where" the hell the state is located 😂 easy to mistake it for CT or RI lol
This came up in my recommendations! A few updates George and Soula now have a nice place up the highway and the mall has been turned into a postal Annex!
I went on vacation at Rehoboth Beach in July 2017 and I'm actually surprised this mall isn't doing better. Rehoboth is a very busy area, the traffic is terrible! Lots of people and tourists. The mall might have been dying because there are Tanger Outlet Malls very close to Rehoboth Beach.
Jack Anderson Yepp that’s exactly what I commented above lol! The Tanger Outlets have Every name brand you would want to shop at & their discounted prices aha! Having Outlets in the Rehoboth/Dewey Beach area could never let a mall survive ya know :/ Unfortunately:/
@@meredithevans4627 I loathe Outlet Malls. Old clothing that has been stepped on from years long gone. The only place that I somewhat enjoyed in that genre was Century 21, directly across the street from the World Trade Center Complex in NYC.
Gary Gans well the outlets went from selling good quality items to stuff made just for the outlets, the TJ Max in my area doesn't have anything quality anymore , in my opinion I think they send the good stuff overseas now. I used to be able to get Wustof knifes for cheap all the time. Now I haven’t seen them in ages.
I’m from there and it’s bc they never updated the mall. I remember going all the time as a kid and it was amazing I loved going there but after a while it just wasn’t up to date with the times unfortunately sucks how you can’t have a simple little mall anymore. They even had a movie theater in there it was great and this cool gumball claw machine thing
Also with the tanger outlets and boardwalk down the road this wasn’t a very good choice of location. They had it tucked in the corner you couldn’t even see the mall entrances driving by they messed that up big time.
this may be one of your best videos, the introduction transition was so wonderfully eerie and talking to the people there was such an interesting touch
+This is Dan Bell. this one certainly, Tri-State still had some remnants of it's past intact, and some people and business here and there, but this one is certainly desolate. However, I think Frederick Towne Mall beats both of these, that night tour video was stunning.
+This is Dan Bell. So far, Rehoboth takes the crown for most depressing mall. I am struck by Rehoboth Mall's endless hall of covered-over storefronts juxtaposed with the food court's sea of "for lease" signs. I don't remember any other mall with such a horrible flood of those depressing, desperate signs. Tri-State mall is physically located somewhere where it might find some business somehow; it's right along the heavy traffic of I-95 and nestled among big residential areas in both PA and DE. There's at least some kind of potential. Rehoboth Mall, on the other hand, will forever be overshadowed and obsoleted by the huge expanses of outlet stores just nearby. It's helplessly gulping its final breaths of air before an unceremonious demise.
I know this video is at least 3 years old but still it surprised me to see how dead that mall was. Apparently George and Soula’s shop lasted longer than bankrupt RadioShack
Omg wow with your humor you deserve more subscribers, more VIEWS, more likes. I DIED LAUGHING in the beginning you put Charlie's Manson's girls while they were walking to their court date in the middle of radio shack and that music playing while girls walked.
I just LOVE the background track in this video. It's so nostalgic but at the same time sad and depressing. And what a wonderful couple. I hope they're still doing ok. Keep up the good work Dan!
The midi-sounding music is what really drives in that this mall is dead. Like, not just dead. This mall is dead, buried, and rotting away. Best of luck to Georg and Soula, they looked like nice people.
Rehoboth is my hometown, I remember when that place was a hustle and bustle back in the early 2000's. I remember a movie theatre with a boss arcade, and this really cool gumball machine and a really good chinese restaurant and pet store. It's so sad, I drive past this place every day on my way to work. I haven't been in there for years. It makes me wanna cry
One of his dead mall series popped up on my recommended and I came specifically to see if he would cover this mall as I'm a local from the area and loved going there as a kid. Going to the Chinese buffet and then looking at all the animals in the pet shop are some of the best family memories I have when I was younger. Sad to see what it's become now but Rehoboth is a huge tourist destination with newer and better outlets and restaurants all around it. It's really no surprise but still sad 😭
Same here. There used to be a video arcade ,an exotic pet store, Rose's a Chinese buffet was there for a little while. I remember seeing The first Matrix movie in that theater
I live by a mall in Racine, WI called Racine Mall. Place is huge, but empty, as only 6 stores remain. Both food courts are closed, there's an abandoned Chick Fella near the middle, and there's usually about 10 people there. They had a huge elevator called The Water Tower, which also sits abandoned. None of the stores are built over either....i haven't been able to walk in their without getting scared shitless. All the stores are so remote and damaged looking. Please visit, as it will take over Tri-State Mall no doubt
Hey Thanks a lot Alex9991. Do you know what version it is that dan bell is playing though? I like that instrumental sound on this track versus the original track with lyrics.
So nice to see some Delaware representation!! I’ve had a nice little trailer down at Rehoboth beach my entire life. Another reason this mall failed is because there are huge shopping outlets all along Rehoboth with TONS of stores, which pretty much acts as the “mall” around here. There’s also a ton of small boardwalk shops which always thrive!
There was one in Roanoke that was worse. It was called Crossroads Mall, built in the early 60s and by 1973, it was superseded by Tanglewood Mall which has been a dying mall since it was superseded by Valley View mall in 1985. Crossroads mall was "revamped" in the around 1972 with very trendy decor for that era and never touched again. It hung on at least until 2005 to provide access to the DMV, a Goody's clothing store, JoAnn Fabrics and a gaming store. Originally KMart was it's anchor store, but it sealed it's entrance to the mall in the 1990s. A split level mall, around the 90s they sealed off the partial lower level resulting in an escalator in use to access the remaining open second floor in the sections where the ground level was not sealed off...with plywood. This mall was gutted around 2008 and repurposed as an Advance Auto training center.
This makes me so sad, I don't live in the US I'm in Canada but I've seen so many places close down, places we hung out at and had our first jobs So heartbreaking to see all these places disappear
After watching the entire DMS several times, this video has my vote for the best in the series. The "Dead Mall Vista" shot accompanied by the mall-inspired arrangement of "Up Where We Belong" is priceless 80's nostalgia at its most depressing. Hearing George and Soula reminisce about the good old days adds the personal touch of people who witnessed the decline.
I worked at Radio Shack for half a year. I'm an electronics tech, I knew my stuff. I could sell... best in two counties. The paychecks were awful. As a business, they got away from what made them appealing in the first place. I own a computer business now, and I've contemplated adding a store akin to old school RS.
I worked in an electronics component chain years ago, it was exactly the same. The stories I could tell most people wouldn't believe. That chain went from 18 stores nation wide to dead in under 5 years.
I don't understand why sections of dead malls are not turned into senior housing. And at an opposite end, shelters for homeless. Malls are usually on bus routes. And often there is Urgent Care type offices a short distance away. And also, often, temporary employment agencies are not far from them, or at least on same bus routes. So why let Malls be millionaires write offs, and build completely new senior housing when already all the basics are right there. Why.
Wow, this was so sad to watch - Soula and her husband seemed so sweet and it's a testament to her good business that she's the last business still thriving there !!! Though, I do feel bad for them, as she said in your video - now she doesn't enjoy coming in to work as much because it's dead there. :( I think this is the runaway winner between the two.
Why do malls die? Is it merely location? Economy? Or both? Might it be that its online shopping that prevails? What are your thoughts? Even here in North County San Diego, Ca we've got a dead mall. I find it really interesting.
+Laura Tuller Allow me to give my thoughts on that. First of all, I love Malls, I grew up going to Malls with my Dad and my Brother, and it does make me sad to see Dead Malls or Dying, especially the ones that I use to go to, like the Cincinnati Mills Mall in Ohio. That particular Mall didn't have any Bus-Lines to go to that Mall so that could be part of the problem. Economy is certainly another, and also, online shopping websites like 'Amazon' could be a big reason, since people can get stuff for cheap and another thing that you haven't mention is a Big problem why. Back then, websites like 'Napster' is an online place where people can get free movies and CDs and I think that really hurt stores like FYE, Sam Ash, Camelot Music, and Suncoast. Those stores were part of the big reasons why I go to the Mall. Well, that's my thought. Have a great day and night and take care :-)
+Laura Tuller We had a "dead mall" in our area like this one. It got torn down, replaced with almost the EXACT same footprint of space, but just dedicated shop buildings, and it is thriving. So strange.
+Laura Tuller All of those. I'll add to that in my city there were too many malls. Every time they opened a new one everyone would flock to the new mall and the other malls would suffer. Population migration farther out away from the old suburbs. Most of the dead malls where I am are closer to the inner-city. Crime and incidents around those malls can scare people from going so they'll switch to malls in more affluent areas. I managed retail for years and I can say that the growth of on-line shopping was a big part in reducing the traffic in malls. This is the reason why I personally don't go to malls anymore. I would rather shop at home than fight for a parking space and walk around a mall.
I usually hate malls. I hated having to walk around them. But after watching these videos and putting up with the hassles of online shopping I miss physical stores and am nostalgic for malls. Every place my parents used to take me to as a kid is all different now. But hey that's life and stuff changes, not always for the best. Yes the malls are sad and depressing. It's shame to because the mall used to be the social gathering place for communities. You could shop, find food and even talk to people if you could find someone. Now all people do is sit at their computers and on their phones and order stuff. The malls were more than just temples of capitalist excess to a lot of people. How many working class families went through all these malls in their prime years? I bet a lot. Whatever the cause was that made the malls end up in this sad state it's really depressing and sad. The worst ones are signs of the bad economy and malls turned into ghost towns because of crime.
+WulfOne i know what you mean about being able to talk to people in a mall. I was waiting for a couple people at my local mall one time and while sitting on the bench I got into a conversation with a World War II veteran who told me about sailing on the ocean liner Monterey when she was being used as a troop transport. If I remember right I was able to tell the gentleman how the ship had been later sold to the Chandris Line and been renamed Britanis. I'm an ocean liner enthusiast so this was an extra-special conversation and one that wouldn't have happened if I was shopping online.
+WulfOne I still go to the mall lol it's way more fun to go into a store and shop than try to find everything on the internet. A lot of my friends in High School still go to malls, so I'd say malls are still going strong. Also, I go to the King of Prussia mall near Philly where lots of people go so maybe that's why.
Chanel Oberlin:King of Prussia my top choice too as best big mall outside N.Philly.Thankfully is located just far enough outside of Philly in nice area NOT plagued by crime & social behavior "issues" @ least not so far.👑👌
WulfOne It's not as bad as you think.Around where I live, there is the Berkshire Mall, and that is so busy I can't begin to explain it.I haven't shopped online once in my whole life.I always go to stores because there's a lot of stores for a lot of things in my area
@Waiting for ES6 There are a number of charities in the metro Houston area that have done just that - bought up a bankrupt/empty building at a rock-bottom bargain price and then converted the building into a facility to help the homeless/street people or for other charitable purposes. As a rule it works out great because they pay way below market value for the property and they can fix the building up to their needs.
Used to house a hair cuttery, arcade, full food court, a movie theater, then a discount movie theater, chinese buffet, a controversial exotic pet store, a bbq place, aaaand the rehoboth beach film society for a little bit. maybe a fabric and/or button store for a bit? also the tuesday morning/michaels used to be a LOVELY Roses. Where my father bought me one of my first Beatles CDs. My old man died about three months after you posted this... he got the alterations on his jacket done at Sula's; about two weeks before he passed (it was for my sister's wedding). Jeez man...
As a child of the 80's (which to me was the height of mall culture) it was a winsome, bittersweet moment hearing the faint Muzak-like strains of "Sara" by Foreigner as you surveyed the vacant storefronts and emptied halls... God I miss the 80's...
What I notice first and foremost is the bland ceiling with exposed beams and crossbars. Gives me the impression that this was originally an outdoor mall that was hastily covered, or, perhaps, the original roof collapsed and was repaired as quickly and cheaply as possible.
I grew up on the eastern seaboard, my family visited Rehoboth Beach and Ocean City MD every summer. My mom actually worked at a smaller Peebles in MD way back in the late 60's -- had no idea they were still out there. Have been out west now for 30 years. I love that your video hunting grounds cover all these areas I once knew so well, Dan! Keep up the great work!
Hahahaha, throwing in the Charles Manson girls in the Radio Shack advertisement... you are on another level my dude! I can’t believe how addictive your videos are to me, but your intros are legitimate works of pop-art! I would pay for an exhibit of just all your intros playing on loop.
When I was visiting my grandma, who lives near Rehoboth, we had to run into RadioShack and I remember it looking just like this a few years ago. It was a depressing sight. My dad and aunt used to go to the theatre and said the mall was a beautiful place but now that it's closed the mall is just sad.
I can't believe they are still trying to rent out store fronts there! No one in there right mind would put a store there. I'm curious as to want the rent would be???
I just talked to a friend who lives in the area, I guess this is still open as of 5/12/17. He said the Peebles, RadioShack, and the alterations place are the only places there still.

it's sprintshack
aww the couple seemed like nice people, I wish their business the best.
Soula seems like the kind of person who can be upbeat and friendly in any situation, any time.
hope they got business from this
I'm a Georg and Soula fan now too. They were so sweet, and it was great hearing a first hand account of the mall in better times.
Nature Boy 2 😆😆
I'm drinking a red bull.
Nice of Soula and her husband to talk to you. Probably the highlight of their month considering their surrounds.
Michael Sharp yeah, hopefully their business survived the mall closure
They'll be talking about that for years to come.

Update is that Mall closed on August 31 in 2017. Soula moved to Lewes - 17316 Coastal Highway #3 Lewes, Delaware 19958
Yay, her business lives on
Thanks for the update 👍
Did they tear it down?

Georg and Soula are so darling. I hope they can find a better location soon.

hope theres another mall near by for them. the mall has potential if some huge stores come back.

I don’t know what happened to them now, but I found this article which was published in Sep 2017

I think the Alteration store hanging on for dear life and remembering the good ol days is the most depressing thing I have seen in a while.
The LOLbertarian we have a shop like that at my local mall.
I know this comment is 3 years old, but I guess you could say their shop was _hanging on by a thread_
Aw, that couple was so nice. They're keeping a good attitude about the situation up there in, which is excellent.

But and dying malls here just have a huge chunk of them turned into a TK Maxx.
+Larry Bundy Jr Very good point. Too late now. They should of floated this thought back in the 1960s.
It's another Guru Larry sighting!
This is Dan Bell.
Man, get me a time machine and I could become a millionaire :D
There's initially 4 anchor stores per mall. One on each end & two in the middle, with both indoor & outdoor access.
Video may have killed the Radio star but the internet broke everything else.
The internet made me smart tho
Actually corporations and globalism to devalue wages and kill the middle class resulted in almost everyone unable to afford to shop at malls. People don't shop in malls because they cannot afford to, they would have died since everyone shops at discount stores now even without the internet. The sickness runs deep but because it doesn't effect boomers nothing will ever be done about it, especially with votes.
If anything, internet has seen a resurgence of radio via podcasts.
@steve l Only in America, shopping centres as we call them are still booming in Australia. Thankfully!
@GretschDog ok boomer
How and why is a mall still open with only 2 small stores. The electric bill alone should shut it down

I just want to know why the uploader or whoever used a clip of the Manson girls in the intro. I get that that were happy and stuff there but omg that's such an odd choice
Tri-Star mall looks bad, but this one is worse .. It looks like an industrial storage place
Good on that local couple for outlasting all the chains in that mall, hope things work out for them and their business.
Muzak love lifts us up where we belong!! Where the storefronts cry, and the malls go die!
That muzak version of Sara by Starship is making me cry.
Yeah. Hell of a combination with the video.
The song was "Up Where We Belong."
The radio shack music fad out at :43 was pretty intense too.
It's like the ghost of of the 1980s saying, "The joy and optimism from the 80s is leaving forever very soon."
I just wrote the same thing kinda did not see yours
I feel sorry for the couple doing alterations. Even if business for them is good, that mall is closing in the near future. I hope they can afford to move.
Finally found the song! It's actually Paul Mauriat's cover on "Up Where We Belong".
I'm so glad I grew up in the '80s. That was such a fun time, so much more upbeat and positive than things are now.
Fuck you why did i have to be born 1994 the time everything started going to shit.
The 80s were the worst decade of my life. Screw the 80s. They started and ended with recessions. People were divorcing like crazy. Feathered hair, acid wash denim, The Cosbys, etc.
And Sara in the 80s was a happy song... the millennial version of Sara makes me cry.
@@TheTengukami I'm sorry... If I could time travel, I would take you with me!

Aww I liked Georg & Soula! If I lived in Delaware I'd take my alterations to them.
I liked Alterations By Soula on Facebook because of this video just to support these sweet folks. 🙂
Soula and George have some serious market leverage over any rental hikes...
I love your openings. I always think I'm seeing a legit commercial and then along comes Charles Manson's family members singing in the LA Courthouse in 1969. I think you also showed Bob Crane's last picture in one of your Dead Motel Series. Your vids are great and so is your sense of humor.
No shit, I thought the same thing. Is it or just coincidence? Wow.
The big movie houses put all the private theaters out of business 😠
The internet really killed an era.
it’s evolution
You can't stop the world from changing, you just have to roll with it.
SPAZE PARANOIDS !!!! ! You said it perfectly

Voice in the Wilderness move?
Yeah, the only reason I see myself ever going to Delaware is a NASCAR race at the Monster Mile... I can't think of anything else. Such a boring state.
Voice in the Wilderness wow. you are a breath of fresh air! actual thought and expression from someone who didn't just ATTEND school.. but payed attention, a little bit. some of the posters haven't been, it seems. thanx.
There was some sort of prostitution going on, with the use of the restrooms. My husband worked on the mall, when it was going on.
I always throught it was appropriate they the state has the word "ware" in its name, since nobody knows "where" the hell the state is located 😂 easy to mistake it for CT or RI lol
This is becoming the highlight of my Friday night shift! Great work dan!
The Muzak version of Sara was killing me lol!!
Me 2 sorry for laughing tho
Rehoboth or Tri-State?
+This is Dan Bell. Rehoboth!
+This is Dan Bell. Rehoboth
+This is Dan Bell. this one certainly, Tri-State still had some remnants of it's past intact, and some people and business here and there, but this one is certainly desolate. However, I think Frederick Towne Mall beats both of these, that night tour video was stunning.
+This is Dan Bell. I'd say Tri-State because it's closed or even demolished... so yeah can't be more dead than that.
Can these dead malls not be turned into homeless accommodations? Shelters, low-cost childcare, something to help the community.
If someone wants to buy it from the owners, who surely aren't going to give a piece of property worth alot of money away for free.
There's no money in helping people sadly
Because it isn't profitable. Sad but true.
The homeless can help themselves if they want to. I owe them nothing.

Hey Thanks a lot Alex9991. Do you know what version it is that dan bell is playing though? I like that instrumental sound on this track versus the original track with lyrics.
The version he uses is from Paul Mauriat (I had to let a music ID finder tell me)
This is the track. Thank you very much. It reminds me of a lot of the old 80's movies from back in the day.
Keep rolling through Paul Mauriat's music, it's relaxing for me.
There used to be an exotic pet store at that mall. I pet a wallaby and a coati there
Loved this video, and the very sweet couple you met.
This makes me so sad, I don't live in the US I'm in Canada but I've seen so many places close down, places we hung out at and had our first jobs
So heartbreaking to see all these places disappear
After watching the entire DMS several times, this video has my vote for the best in the series. The "Dead Mall Vista" shot accompanied by the mall-inspired arrangement of "Up Where We Belong" is priceless 80's nostalgia at its most depressing. Hearing George and Soula reminisce about the good old days adds the personal touch of people who witnessed the decline.
That music at 5:20 is so great! 👊🏻🎵❤️

I worked at Radio Shack for half a year. I'm an electronics tech, I knew my stuff. I could sell... best in two counties. The paychecks were awful. As a business, they got away from what made them appealing in the first place. I own a computer business now, and I've contemplated adding a store akin to old school RS.
DeadKoby that would be really cool! There is a business in my state the wholesales electronic components.
Why.
Because people suck,if they ain't gonna get any money for it then it won't happen. They'd rather just let it rot.
You interviewing the couple is fantastic, you’re at your best with others surrounding you
I have no idea why I watch these. I don't like deliberately getting depressed, yet here I am.
Same here. I'm drawn to the dark side of it and it fascinates me, yet it really brings me down. I don't want to watch, but then I do. ????????
So strange.
+Laura Tuller
All of those.
+Danaxo That's just sad.
+Danaxo Amazon, Ebay, Choxi (Nomorerack)....yeah, I get all my stuff from them now.
+WulfOne I live in Colorado Springs, I miss when either of the two malls here were more than massive cloths stores split into different brands.....
It's not right that there's massive structures like this standing empty with homeless people on the streets.
Ms A you should gather your community and pool money together to buy up some space. Good idea.
Let them take over the place and see how long it lasts.
Roller skates are all that I ever think of when I see these floors Dan!

@KV-85 контрмера The song "Sara" was not released until after 1985...you are severely mistaken.
Jeez man...
I remember that mall. I havent been there since 2003. Wow!
As a child of the 80's (which to me was the height of mall culture) it was a winsome, bittersweet moment hearing the faint Muzak-like strains of "Sara" by Foreigner as you surveyed the vacant storefronts and emptied halls... God I miss the 80's...
Thanks for sharing. I spent a rainy afternoon watching your videos. Very good quality research and commentary too.
This seems like such a depressing thing to watch. Am I depressed? Should I talk to someone…
This makes me want to visit my local Mall
Actually, I don't find it depressing. It's more like he's coaxing us to be sad about this, when it's not sad at all.
What I notice first and foremost is the bland ceiling with exposed beams and crossbars. Gives me the impression that this was originally an outdoor mall that was hastily covered, or, perhaps, the original roof collapsed and was repaired as quickly and cheaply as possible.
I like the business owners!
You can thank Amazon as well for dead malls!
Amazon sucks.
Amazon killed the Mall Star...
Amazon does suck big time.. I rather pay 10 extra bucks for something that does not fall apart in a month.

great work , brilliant video
An austere environment, so little decoration. That ceiling over the concourse/food court give the place the look of a warehouse or airplane hangar.
"Love lift us up where we belong" is a fitting song for this one, love it
Dan Bell videos never get old. Thank you Dan!
I can't tell. Is a closed mall sadder than an "open" one with only two stores?
Dude, I kinda like these kind of places, they're so peaceful.
It looks like owning a shop during the apocalypse, sad living in Delaware my whole life but never going to this mall...
Yikes
Dan Bell I love this series so much and thank you so much for making it! I wish I could see pictures of what the mall looked like before
When I was visiting my grandma, who lives near Rehoboth, we had to run into RadioShack and I remember it looking just like this a few years ago. It was a depressing sight. My dad and aunt used to go to the theatre and said the mall was a beautiful place but now that it's closed the mall is just sad.
I didn't even know Rehoboth had a mall, and I've been living in and around Delaware my whole life.
Right? I live in Seaford and had no clue
Seaford is my hometown! There used to be a Roller Skating rink in Rehoboth and I would go to this mall back in the day.
I can't believe they are still trying to rent out store fronts there! No one in there right mind would put a store there. I'm curious as to want the rent would be???
you should also visit the Blue Hen Mall in Dover, Delaware.....now called the Blue Hen Corporate Center
Yes!! I miss that mall,so many childhood memories.
I'm addicted to your series. At age 42, I was a mall kid in the 80's. Even though I loathe the mall now, I still feel nostalgia for them.
Starting to appreciate my local mall more and more after watching these depressing videos.
I just talked to a friend who lives in the area, I guess this is still open as of 5/12/17. He said the Peebles, RadioShack, and the alterations place are the only places there still.
