    Dan Bell's 2016 tour of the Rehoboth Mall:
    • DEAD MALL SERIES : Reh...
    In the 26th episode of the Expedition Log Series, we visit what is left of the Rehoboth Mall, in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The mall was under construction when I arrived, and luckily, I was able to get one last look at some of the vintage elements.
    Come take a walk with me through this amazing mall!

    Hey Guys! Here's a special ExLog for you all...I was able to gain access to the remains of the Rehoboth Mall late in 2017, and this is what I saw. The Post Office Annex now occupies this space, and I'm not exactly sure if the small corridor with the Radio Shack is still there, but I'll make efforts to go back to visit and get you all an update. Thanks for watching! Be sure to follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and to join the Discord channel for live Expedition Log updates! Links in the description!

      Hey Sal. I know I must sound like a broken record by now lol, but your vlogs are truly something special. I honestly look forward to every release. This episode included of course. It's been years since I strolled the Rohobeth Mall. For the most part, the mall aesthetics appear the same as I remember it. Which besides the vacancies, doesn't surprise me lol. Thx for the mall status update. I enjoyed the visual tour today 👏🏻 Have a nice week.

    I'm unable to understand just what it is that evokes such strange emotion watching videos of old malls like this for me. It's beyond strange but I could watch them for hours. Probably has to do with a bygone era that is still dying in front of our eyes.

      @Climate_Hoax 5 лет назад +6

      @@sal well you're doing your share and as you know you aren't doing it alone there are dozens and dozens of people doing it some better than others. But don't you think it's sort of weird how it's so compelling for a lot of us to watch this stuff? Probably because some of us are old enough to remember when an indoor mall was a really big deal.

      Well said@@Climate_Hoax . Sal does such an outstanding job. Right down to the background music. It was a novelty when we were younger. I grew up at a time when malls were just beginning. I'm 52 now. That shows you they have not been around that long. Now with social media and online shopping the days of meeting friends at the mall are sadly leaving us. For me at least it reminds me of better times.

      I feel like you. Could it be because we felt that the malls would be eternal just like us? When we were young we felt invincible, and we didn't worry about the economy and pollution too much. Life was a bit simpler, there was less competition with other countries, the middle class was better off. Malls were wonderfull, full of excitement.

    I've been going to that beach every other year for basically my entire life. We went in the mall once, probably about 1998 and it was totally surreal. We parked and went in some weird back exit that was nearly pitch black and then went to a small movie theater. But wait, there's no mention of a theater in this video. Either it was very short lived or I'm misremembering. The only other movie theater within dozens of miles is movies at midway, which is massive. I've been there recently, it wasn't that. If I think of anything I will reply again. Anyway, the music and commercial were very fitting, not just because it's October, but it was fitting for the state that building is in.

    • @sal
      @sal  5 лет назад +9

      You know what, I think the gym may have replaced the movie theatre. I couldn’t find any primary sources on the theatre and couldn’t substantiate it, which is why I didn’t mention it. I’m 100% accepting of a correction, though, so let me know if you have something concrete and I’ll add it to my pin!

      I’m from Dover, Delaware and still live in Delaware. Used to go to that mall all the time growing up and into adulthood, with my family and friends, going to the beach for the summer. The movie theater there was awesome and so cheap. $5 features. It was much less crowded than the big Midway movie theatre that was close by to it. It was much more intimate and cozy. The last movie I saw there was “No Country for Old Men”. I also used to get fish there at the pet store they had. And the Chinese buffet was awesome. It was a small little mall, that locals really appreciated. It was never busy and crowded when I was there. Really made me sad watching this video; Its all gone now. Ive been to the Wendy's across from this place a few times, i always wondered if it was a mall, but it seems so out of place, with Tanger outlets not too far away from this location its no wonder why this place never gained popularity. Another good mall to check out is the Blue Hen Mall in Dover De. It is completely dead as a mall and now is full of other businesses and even the department of labor has their offices their as well, the building still looks like a mall but run down, the parking lot looks like it hasnt been paved in decades. Its not too far away from the dover mall which never seems to be very busy neither. It has both name brand stores and other stores you dont expect to see in a mall. I live near the border of Delaware and Maryland and enjoy watching the dead mall series of the malls in Maryland like Annapolis and Glen Burnie cuz ive been to those places a few times. Keep up the good work Sal, i enjoy the vids. I remember when malls were the places to go to hang out and have fun, sad to see so many fall to the way side.

    I really enjoy all the history you provide and work you put into these. Your opening graphics and music are well done, too. I got an almost Stranger Things vibe with this one, which is perfect for Halloween.
    Seems like there’s a theme with Rehoboth Beach, and it’s that the residents do not enjoy traffic. lol. Having seen Route 1 in the summer, and living in South Jersey, I get it, but I feel like maybe there’s a bit of cutting off their nose to spite their face going on (?). Building stores does bring in traffic but it can also make your life more convenient as a resident. More places to shop = revenue and lower taxes (ideally). But it’s sad to see that a once busy mall is now what you’ve shown us. Reminds me of the once-great Echelon Mall, now Voorhees Town Center, which is basically just a business park with some overpriced apartments. It was *the* hangout for kids in the late 80s/early 90s, and now it’s just Boscov’s and a few restaurants clinging to life. Change can be good, but it can also suck. For us nostalgic people, anyway. But the retro commercial, loved it! I love old adverts, and that clown looked one bowl of Krispies away from turning into Pennywise.

    I live in the same county as the mall is in - Sussex County. In fact, I was just there today, in Peebles however. The post office was built around what used to be the core of the food court and the outside of the post office forms a dimly-lit hallway around the old perimeter of the food court. The place is honestly depressing. A lot of people also forget to mention that the Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth is also a very likely large reason for this mall’s death.

    This mall should be thriving. Delaware Route 1 carries lots of traffic to and from the beach each summer. In recent years Sussex County has grown as a prosperous retirement community particularly attracting well off retirees from the Washington DC area. It appears that bureaucracy on the part of local and state officials and poor decision making led to the demise.

    I live pretty close to that mall and always wanted to go in but never did. There was actually another micro mall in ocean city that was anchored by a grocery store and a roses that was torn town very recently. The roses grocery store still stand, and the roses has a strange atrium sort of thing on the end. I have no idea what the inside of the mall looked like cause it has been closed as long as I can remember but I would assume it was very 70s like most things in ocean city MD

      Richard Crane funny part is you should see the traffic now in summer bumper to bumper a normal 25 min drive to where ever in Rehoboth takes you about 1 an 25 mins

    The entire Rehoboth Beach area, along Route 1, has become a miles long parade of tawdry, trashy 'outlets' and sundry other vile offences on the landscape.. The last 20 years have seen an appalling level of blight decent on this, once respectable area of Delaware.

    What happened to the theater that used to be in there? I remember going there to see movies a lot. The entrance to the theater was in the food court.

    Krinkles was one creepy ass clown. What a freaky commercial that must have been for the kids at that time in history. Just plain scary and weird.

    That clown...Ugh!
    Sal, great back story on the mall; don’t usually get that with other dead mall vids. Kinda hypocritical to tear down part of the mall due to too much traffic and then proceed to build a Wally World in its place. I worked at the Roses store when it opened. It was something of a prototype for the chain. The store manager was an intense little man who’s toupee kept sliding sideways. The store did well, but soon after opening in ‘86 there was a stockroom fire; we spent days culling through good versus bad merch and put a lot of it out in the fire lane for a big yard sale. I remember the Superfresh grocery store had an awesome fresh seafood dept. I guess Pebbles is the sole survivor.

    does not make sense they demolished part of the mall to relieve traffic problems but wanted to build a Walmart which would bring more traffic

      Spud 153 that’s Delaware for you (I can say that cause I’m a resident and native of Delaware 😂). Aubrey Plaza is a perfect example of how Delawareans are. Some call us wierd, we just call each other by our names (or not at all) 🤣😂(please note-if you don’t know who Aubrey Plaza is, look up some of her interviews on here; classic example 👍)

    That's funny how they were worried about traffic all those years ago and now fast forward to today, they just keep building to attract more tourists. How times change

    Weren't the people complaining about the traffic the same people who were shopping there? What happened to the Walmart? Did it relocate? I can see not wanting a Walmart located close to where one lives. Their customers are definitely sketchy.

  • @billl1127
    @billl1127 5 лет назад

    So maybe I misunderstood. The city wanted the mall to reduce its size by 10,000 sq ft to help ease traffic but the space was going to be part of a Walmart?

    • @sal
      @sal  5 лет назад

      They detached the Walmart, and it had no mall access. I’m guessing it was some legal way to force less traffic

    • @billl1127
      @billl1127 5 лет назад

      @@sal just seems counterintuitive. Adding a Walmart will only increase traffic in an area. usually they create major congestion.
