  • Robert O'Byrne ‪@irishaesthete4332‬ presents a tour of Townley Hall in County Louth, Ireland. Presented by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA), the new series ICAA Travel Revisited takes viewers back to some of the favorite destinations from past ICAA Travel Programs.
Townley Hall was built in the early 1790s by a fascinating trio: the heir of the estate, Blayney Townley Balfour III; his sister, Anna Maria Townley Balfour; and the great Irish architect, Francis Johnston. Taking design cues from contemporaries like James Wyatt, and of course from ancient sources such as the Pantheon, Johnston and his discerning clients created an enduring example of restrained elegance that remains one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Ireland. I remember, back in the late 60s attending an SCM conference in Townley Hall. Many thanks for reminding me of that most enjoyable weekend.

It’s elegant, spare and beautiful! It’s so wonderful, too, that there are records of the owner’s sister’s contribution to the design.
