According to the Ghostbusters 2009 video game, which is effectively the 3rd movie, the actors said it was, Egon used to be a coroner. Now, it's "just a hobby." Wow.
Also wanna add how funny it is when Egon loses his cool and yells "YOUR MOTHER!" like that. It seems totally out of character for Egon because he comes across as kind of stoic, but at the same time, that's what makes it all the more hilarious!
Another great quote is from Egon in Extreme Ghostbusters: "Just because my hair is turning grey and I'm getting flabby, my eyesight and hearing have diminished, my metabolic rate has slown down and I'm no longer producing brain cells, doesn't mean I'm getting old" ;)
Egon is, hands down, my favorite of the ghostbusters! Hats off to the late & great Mr. Harold Ramis for portraying the brains behind the busting. Rest In Peace, Harold.
I always loved when the prisoners gathered around Egon telling the Ivo Shandor story like the disciples and he was kind of caught off guard by their interest. That's what made this movie and Egon Spengler great, the understated irreverence.

I love how, in the commercial, Egon looks for his mark on the ground before and after he says his line. Such a funny little detail.

I kinda like how in the jail cell fellow prisoners are causally walking in to listen to Egon's explanation about the goings-on with Gozer.
