There's one relatively modern theory, based on a newly found manuscript from 1792 in Tating (Frisian region that, at the time, belonged to Denmark).

@@Akropolis89, this march is originally Finnish, but at the time when it was composed Finland was an autonomic part of Russia. So it is not wrong to call it a Russian march. However, the main theme of this march is probably Prussian, and the Finnish composer only added the side theme to it. So you could also call it a Prussian march.

This march is actually composed by a Finnish music conductor Erik Wilhelm Eriksson 1837. It’s original title is ”Suomi-marssi” (The Finland-march).
