This is where it pays to complain to the store manager about “gouging”. Me and some ladies did it here in our rural town and you better believe those prices came down fast. This was two years ago and we took receipts from other stores from 30-200 miles away on the items we were complaining about. So first he claimed “supply chain issues”, when that didn’t work he tried “inflation” but that didn’t work either and we had our receipts to prove him wrong and promised to spread the word in this small town. He lowered the prices on our items within the week. We were all retired so we had time to do this. Everyone used to do this when I was a kid back in the 60s and 70s.
The average price of food in the United States increased 2.2% in the 12 months ended June, after an annual increase of 2.1% in May, according to the latest inflation data published July 11, 2024, by the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). As recently as August 2022, the rate of inflation for food at 11.4% was the highest since May 1979.
As far as quality of kitchen appliances go a MUCH better source than Consumer Reports is ACTUAL appliance service/techs that work on them that have youtube channels. They are unbiased AND have professional expertise AND their info is FREE.
💯% this. Appliance delivery, tech and sales at a small dealer for almost 20 years. Consumer reports lost credibility with me when they rated one brand drastically different than another that were the same appliance other than cosmetic. I just shook my head and laughed.
@@bw3506 I hope some small dealers are going out of their way to pick up and repair non-smart appliances. I'd do without before I'll let appliances that transmit wirelessly into my house. The only benefit to "smart" appliances is that someone else controls your appliances and could choose to turn them off any time they wish. Besides, old appliances are far better. My 2003 glass-topped electric stove and 2003 refrigerator are still working fine.
I think that having a generator of any kind in this day and age is a necessity 💯 Weather now is too unpredictable and power grids are in need of updating.

@@solartime8983where can I get a good solar inverter? Size ? Price? Yes 2 days at least. We had power outages more. Lastnight. Yet we have had a lot of storms THOR fighting for us and record amounts of rains in a Minneapolis Minnesota ! It’s wild! The sounds in the sky’s were on the news lastnight, people were actually scared 😱 including me from the sonic thunder and lightning ⚡️ wake up people. Theres really something going on. ⚡️
Agree with staying away from LG! We are currently in the process of replacing an LG french door/freezer on bottom fridge that we’ve had problems with for 8 yrs!!!! Its been serviced once when the compressor went out after just a yr. Im not paying someone to do that again. Its trash!!!
I have a whole house generator, it’s propane with a 500 gallon tank. It runs my 2800 sq ft home, plus garage fridge & stand up freezer. Some of the best money we ever spent. Here in the Deep South we have so many storms it just made sense for us. I did Not buy it from a big box store, I used a very reputable company locally. I’m not sure what kind of generator you had that it needed servicing twice a year, mine is once a year & it’s not expensive. Do not let them install it right next to your home if you can help it, unless you get a Kolher. Generacs are loud! I had mine installed about a 1/4 acre from the house & just run the gas line underground. So glad I did! We have had it about 10 years & have only had to refill the tank once & even then it wasn’t a full refill. Fortunately, we’ve never been without power from a storm more than 3 days. I also had a whole house surge protector installed after our pool got hit & we had to rewire it. It’s just living and learning about this crazy weather that hits us now days. I have a neighbor who, every time we have a bad enough storm to kick my generator on says they need one too. Yet they build a pool house instead. I don’t understand that. I don’t have a pool house, but I have a tornado shelter & a generator, they have their pool house🤷♀️.
Never buy a whole house generator from a big box home improvement store AND hire them to install it. You will be overcharged double or more on the installation. Find a trustworthy local installer ( ask around ) and you will get a much better price! Take it from someone who made that mistake in a previous home. Never again.
I think the Home Depot or Lowes box stores sell generac generators cheaply. Our bro in law told us that… he’s a hvac contractor. However, we had to upgrade our house, so we worked with our city to legally upgrade our house infrastructure (new outdoor circuit breaker, new gas lines all overseen and permitted by the city). Put us back a bit financially . But done right. The plumber for gas, the electrician, and the city inspector all collaborated to get the right plan. Now, we will save money by buying a 24 generac (capacity) at Home Depot. Now our plumber will hook up the generac. Other model brands are available that may work better with solar? So, I agree, find your own trusted contractors. Warranties matter, length of, etc. our local Costco highlighted the generac. The contractor that came out to bid was not as knowledgeable as our local Contracter. Service contracts factor in maybe?
Oh also, the Costco contractor was expensive for the generac comparing apples to apples as well. May not be true in every area, but local trusted contractor.
I recommend the smallest generator, 4000W is more than enough to keep a refrigerator and a few other things running, this will use half the fuel which is the limiting factor, also I recommend dual fuel so it can run on propane tanks (gas goes bad and deteriorates in the generator if left unused for long periods. Small=less fuel needed, propane=long term storage and reliability. You can find these for 1/3 to 1/2 the cost and use the money saved to buy extra propane tanks.
I have a 3000 watt and am satisfied. Runs 16 -18 hours per tank and runs the refrigerator, microwave, a light and phone charger and fan simultaneously no issues. However it does not run the a/c because there is no 220v outlet. Power never out for more than three days so no problem. However, if more than a week the a/c would be more of a concern during hot weather.
I would love to see statistics regarding the statement of "Groceries are cheaper than one year ago" because I just don't believe that. The inflation rate may have slowed but I don't see a decrease. I shop for my family and I coupon and look for sales. Here is what I see: Meat is significantly up, Health & Beauty is significantly up, Beverages are up, Dairy has flattened out (eggs came off of a spike last year). I would love to hear what other viewers' opinions are on this subject because I don't trust government numbers.
Inflation is down, prices are not. In other words, price increases have slowed (less inflation) but the increased prices aren’t going anywhere. There mostly here to stay 🤷🏻

Adding a 240V outlet in your garage?? I paid about $750 to have an electrician add a 40 amp circuit to accommodate the 240V outlet for EV charging. I received estimates as high as $1100 (including parts). It is important to specify an industrial gauge outlet, not a cheaper off the shelf, lower grade item. The electrician we hired had initially priced for the lower grade outlet. After viewing many videos that showed the lower grade outlets failing (and nearly causing catastrophic fires), we decided to pay a little more for the higher grade outlet. If you do not have access for an additional circuit in your breaker box, or where you want to charge your EV is located a distance away from the breaker box will result in additional cost. UNLESS you are a trained electrician, don't even think about DIY(ing) this project!!
Great points EXCEPT the certified electrician part. It's not at all complicated if you're generally familiar with electrical work. The cost can easily triple + if your electrical panel is not near your outlet location.
I like heavy whipping cream in ice coffee most days. It's gone up two dollars a quart since two years ago. I recently sent an email to the Food Lion in my neighborhood that I was starting to go an extra 20 miles out of my way to shop at Aldi where it's $1.30 cheaper...🙂 And of course stock up on other bargains while I'm there!
I bought a $1200 generator that can run on propane or gas. It’s powerful enough to power my small office which has a window AC and a small fridge and of course lights and my computer. That’s all I need in a power outage.
I have a basic Sam's Club membership. What I do before I visit is put the things I want to pick up in my online shopping cart as a shopping list. The problem is, they won't have half the things at my warehouse. So, it's like they're making me pay a delivery fee to get them.
Regarding appliances. I had a repairman tell me to stay away from LG, Samsung and other offshore brands. He said that they are built cheaply and have a lot of tech “bells and whistles” where replacement parts are hard to get. He recommended buying American, Whirlpool, Maytag.
🌞Yes, and Kenmore (Sears) we have 30+ year old Appliances still working good! Be willing to pay more for Quality Products...'Cheap' is too expensive...long term🌻!🗽
Techs love Whirlpool made products because parts are ubiquitous and they can complete the repairs quickly. Why are the parts so easy to get? The answer is because they break all the time. That’s why techs love them. Easy to fix, and they fix them frequently.
I built a 48v 100ah battery bank with inverter and a charger for under $800. I’ve got 10 solar panels attached to them and the panels were around $600. I can run what I need to run, with solar indefinitely, as long as I’ve got sun. I also put in a 4k watt generator for $400, that I can run to charge the batteries if no sun is shining. This will conserve fuel, because I will only need to run the generator as needed. I won’t have to burn fuel just to burn a 60 watt light bulb.
What solar battery system would you recommend for smaller usage? If I only want to power a full size frig. Patriot seems overpriced, I know there are others. Thanks!
In the U.S., when it comes to AC voltage specifications, a single voltage can specified 3 separate ways depending on the mathematical formulal used to measure the AC's flucating sine wave voltage. In short - 110V, 115V, and 120V are all the same. (It's almost like referring to a person by his or her First, Middle, or Last names.) Likewise, 220V, 230V, and 240V all refer to the same thing. In the U.S. 110/115/120 voltage is used for "normal" consumer electrical devices, while 220/230/240 voltage is used for consumer devices which have "heavy duty" (higher horsepower) needs. Industrial electrical devices can reguire even voltages.
I bought a refurbished 700.00 furman generator off eBay for 200.00 including shipping. It had a small fuse issue when I received it. They sent me a new one without me knowing and I reset a fuse on the original one. I now I have 2 2000i generators 100.00 each.
I've heard appliances sold at the big box stores are lower quality than the appliances sold at upper end appliance stores. So the next time I need an appliance, I'm going to buy the lower end product at a higher end store. Hopefully, this works out for me!
They do not make appliances like they use to. I will never ever buy an LG Appliance again. Bought a washer machine and 8 months later hose had a pin hole from rubbing duration vibration of spin cycle. I called them as it was still under warranty. They said technician would need to inspect hose to see if it was customer neglect. I fixed it myself. 6 months later (2 months out of warranty) the start button quit working. I went on You Tube and found a video using aluminum foil to get the start button to work. This worked for about a year then it quit working again. So I bought a GE PROFILE WASHER and one year later still going strong, knock on wood.
That ice storm with no electricity for 2 weeks or more was in 1975. I lived in Atlanta and I was 12 years old. we went to live with my mother's friend who had a gas stove and gravity heat. Our apartment was all electric except for a gas hot water heater, so we had to relocate.
I have used consumer reports for years free from the library and mostly a paid subscription and am completely satisfied with the results. I think my current subscription is under $50 a year. I have gotten great purchases at reasonable prices and have rarely been disappointed. Awesome non profit institution.
Ihave been frustrated with Consumer Reports. They choose products sold on the West and East costs but ignore products (many good ones) sold in the Mid West. Countless times I have found myself unable to compare product choices in many categories because of their preferences for large population area products. I can get a better sense of the value of a product reading online reviews.
Stanby generators sound like a great idea. Unfortunately they are started/used so infrequently that they rarely start and run properly when needed. We went 12 years before we needed it. We might as well have bought a brick!
Many buyers are liars. They will lie that the home is for them to raise a family but after the home is sold to them, it's on Zillow for rent. Sellers should always try to get the highest price possible
I don't care, but I find it funny that buyers complain about investors buying up homes driving up the RE market, but they are shady as hell too. You sound bitter, I see you're one of those doom and gloom hoping the RE market crash so you can finally afford to buy? Keep wishing, not everyone is broke like you
I would go with the batteries...but you really need a lot of them to store enough power to run everything for an extended time. it's all about the Amp Hour rating of each cell and how many cells you have. you would need thousands of them to be truly grid independent.
Another way to avoid spending money on ensuring access to electricity is to move to a state where the leaders are actually public servants, there to serve the public. I know that's a novel concept to some, but in states with sound leadership there is no concern about reasonably priced access to reliable power. Oh, and as to how long the spikes in weather will last: at least through the life times of our great grandchildren, depending on our behavior. So any state not shoring up their infrastructure is neglecting their residents, and quality of life will be continuously degrading as the years pass.
Do any such States exist? If so, they won't for long if ex-Californians discover them and import their garbage politics and inflated housing prices. Just ask folks in Arizona, Montana, Colorado, parts of Texas
I wish that inform shouldn't about solar portable generators could be brought down to common terms...like which one charges while using it...what can it support..a fan? a 15 cubic ft fridge..how to set up the panels..can it charge thru windows..SO many generators were stolen in New Orleans.. People even started up a lawn mower so that you wouldn't miss the sound that the generator normally makes when they stole the generator.
😮 @ starting lawn mowers. It differs per person/household, depending on what you want to power. Figure out what you would need to power during a power outage, determine the amount of watts & voltage needed to power them, and purchase a generator with that amount. Some people only want to charge their cell phones, while others want to power their entire house. Clark Deals found these great deals on generators right now: clarkdeals.com/tag/generator/ Hope this helps! 💚
Portable gen tech has jumped a lot. I think the term ‘battery back up’.. these cooler sized batteries can recharged from the grid, solar , or a gas type generator. These batteries, like ‘eco flow ‘ makes rather large( 59, 75, 100 pounds) systems that be linked together .just need a refrigerator? , buy one. Need the ac/ whole home, get 5. The real secret is they ‘charge ‘ from a from gas/ generator in 1 hour. (3.5 hours from solar)So you use a tiny little bit of gas & get 12 hours home power use on a single hour charge.( instead of running a generator 16 hours a day)
@@Clark When you cover this again you need to make sure people realize that most generators will not run a heater very long at all. My solar will run my refrigerator about 12 hours, but one 1500W space heater only about 1.2 hours. So besides a way to keep a few things running on power, they need ways to keep warm!
I love my portable solar generators. I am going to buy another one to power my fridge and then I’ll be set for a severe outage. I had a former friend who use to get her hvac system checked yearly and she has a newer home then me. I always felt like she was throwing money down the drain.

Clark, electricity was not “invented,” it was discovered. But you are correct about generators. Our power was out for 133 hours this month and the Generac saved our buttocks. Mrs. Chuck was after me for years to get a generator and we did in 2022. Tax, title, and license - about $15K, but worth it over the last two years. It runs off natural gas.

@@kaohsiung99 Yes. And 130 is supposedly 'the same' as 120 or 110 when you buy incandescent light bulbs in that they're interchangeable. But if you live where there are storms or in a rural area, choose the 130v as they're less likely to blow due to power glitches.

The other thing is the car manufacturers usually have a recommended list of electricians in your area. Good luck to all.
Solar, at least here in, you can’t use if the grid is offline! Doesn’t make any sense. We got a standby propane generator for only about 12k. IMO, worth every penny!
Just to be on the safe side, If the world does really crumble from communication failures and we need something like a generator propane is going to be so expensive if you can find it I would have a backup plan to my own.
That is only true if you have a grid-tied system. There are systems that can switch between grid-tied and standalone. No doubt they'd be a lot more expensive because they'd require batteries. The options for portable solar generators have really expanded. The larger ones have wheels for easier moving them. So you can roll them outside to hook to solar panels for recharging and back inside to power whatever you need. Look at Jackery and some of the other brands that specialize in solar.
What do you think is the best solar generator to buy Im disabled and rely on myself and Im looking for a good generator but cant find anyone who knows.
Living rural, we lose electricity occasionally because country boys like to move large objects around that don't clear power lines or poles. We have used our generator several times. Weather related power outages are repaired pretty quickly. Stupid takes considerably longer.
Re: appliances - there are a ton of appliance repair people on YT that review appliances (see Ben's Appliances & Junk, Boulevard Appliances and Living On A Dime To Grow Rich) . And some retailers, like Yale Appliance, put out repair statistics. Also, the more gadgets & features, esp. "smart" features, the more expensive it will be to fix. Finally, buy from a retailer that has in-house repairs, they have more at stake in selling you a quality unit. We didn't do this as there were none near us. The other thing is wait for major sales, which happen on major holidays. We just went through this and saved around 50% on our appliances and we mixed & matched to get the best price performance.

Don't buy the whole home fuel generator. Very expensive to own and maintain. It's 2024, get yourself a large power station and a few solar panels. Buy yourself a small (2000w) propane generator only to charge back up the power station. This method will prolong fuel for your propane generator by 10x. Don't buy gasoline powered generator. They don't store very well unless you plan on maintaining it twice a year. Relying on a fuel generator alone is a very short term power source. Most places will not sell gas or propane during power outages.
Our whole house generator has saved our butts many a time... In the mountains we lose electricity all the time - this way we still have wifi, the oven, AC, etc. It's not expensive to maintain at all. A $250 a year contract provides oil changes and basic upkeep.
@@erik5983 My DIY solar doesn't require maintenance. Just clean the panels once in a while. I live along the coast of Washington State. The power outages are normal here. My DIY solar ($5,000) gives me 36 hours of electricity without the Sun. With the Sun shining, I have limitless power. My power bill is about 1 dollar a day or lower.
@@Clark That depends on what you attach to them. Mine will run my refrigerator about 12 hours, but a space heater only 1.2 hours. So using them for heat or a full-sized oven isn't practical.
That's why you have solar, too. And if you have portable backup batteries and the sun isn't shining, you could take them somewhere that has power and charge them back up. How long they last depends on what you're trying to run. You could run a couple of LED lights for days on end even off a small battery pack. But you can't run space heaters, a full-sized oven, or an electric drier unless you have a whole lot of solar.

Good tip, Clarkie! 🙌 It doesn't have to be either/or; both sources together can be really strong. 💚

22:...Clarke TEAM🌅Thanks for including solar PV🌻 re: Petrol Genset🤑...why get a noisy, smelly, high maintenance, External fuel u must buy generator!?! If you have to operate a gas genset for more than a day, it's going to need a storage fuel tank (or pay for gas line service) , and if a crisis extends to weeks, you are going to get SICK or noise, smoke, and buying fuel (hopefully petroleum fuel will still be available?)

In regards to purchasing a new refrigerator, stay away from LG brand or any other with an LG compressor.
We had issues with all our LG appliances except the microwave! Dishwasher, range and fridge were garbage.
However their laundry machines are going on 13 years at my house.
Agree with staying away from LG! We are currently in the process of replacing an LG french door/freezer on bottom fridge that we’ve had problems with for 8 yrs!!!! Its been serviced once when the compressor went out after just a yr. Im not paying someone to do that again. Its trash!!!
Certain model LGs are not affected, but definitely do your research on any appliance purchase such as a fridge
You tube. Bob Appliances gave great review information.
LOL! Great tips! 🙌
That's because they are probably the kind of people who assume you will be there to save them.

Never buy a whole house generator from a big box home improvement store AND hire them to install it. You will be overcharged double or more on the installation. Find a trustworthy local installer ( ask around ) and you will get a much better price! Take it from someone who made that mistake in a previous home. Never again.
Good tip, Clarkie! 🙌
They are vastly under qualified to properly install!
Thank you for sharing this.
Non-Costco members can shop at Costco. They charge a 5% fee but may be cheaper than a membership if not used often.
Prices are still high!
Groceries are cheaper than a year ago, Joe Biden hit a lead off grand slam in the World Series, and I’m a board certified rocket surgeon.
Inflation data does not include energy, food or housing. If it did they would have to tell us everything is up 70 - 145 percent.
Just as you've demonstrated, it depends on the grocery category. Some categories are up, while others are down. 💚

Regarding appliances. I had a repairman tell me to stay away from LG, Samsung and other offshore brands. He said that they are built cheaply and have a lot of tech “bells and whistles” where replacement parts are hard to get. He recommended buying American, Whirlpool, Maytag.
Speed queen washers and dryers, US made and built like tanks. 20 years is not unrealistic for this brand.

In short -
110V, 115V, and 120V
are all the same. (It's almost like referring to a person by his or her
First, Middle, or Last names.)
Likewise,
220V, 230V, and 240V
all refer to the same thing.
In the U.S.
110/115/120 voltage is used for "normal" consumer electrical devices, while
220/230/240 voltage is used for consumer devices which have "heavy duty" (higher horsepower) needs.
Industrial electrical devices can reguire even voltages.

Stanby generators sound like a great idea. Unfortunately they are started/used so infrequently that they rarely start and run properly when needed. We went 12 years before we needed it. We might as well have bought a brick!
In Phoenix, people go to hotels when their power goes out or their air conditioning breaks.
Only the better off people. There couldn't possibly be enough hotel rooms for everyone in a city that size.
Clark Deals found these great deals on generators right now: clarkdeals.com/tag/generator/
Hope this helps!

With regard to EV charging at home, the electric company in my state has a rebate program for EV charging . In our case, the electric company will rebate up to $1140 of the cost to install the hardware to charge from home. We are essentially out of pocket zero dollars due to this program.
What a great answer I got 🙄

How long they last depends on what you're trying to run. You could run a couple of LED lights for days on end even off a small battery pack. But you can't run space heaters, a full-sized oven, or an electric drier unless you have a whole lot of solar.
Clark, why so many recalls , on everyythings, from food, to home goods, and etc. Are governments getting gritted for money from consumers??😂😂😂😂😂. So sad. Thanks.
Sam’s is more targeted to small shop keepers.
Good by Sam's Club. It was hard to justify at the old rate.
You have to wait 18 months before you are not a member. Get your gift cards if you need anything there. Costco
BLESSED are we for receiving the info you share - the science interpreted with your lived experience is amazing. And the joyous sharing of faith and discernment. Thank you thank you thank you.
Can you leave that bs at your church, thanks.
Costco= china offshore trading company, nost food there is from China and they support DEI, boycott them!
Hi Clark , you have great show with excellent content. Do you think a home warranty is good idea to have .
Thanks! No, home warranties are generally not a good idea. There are so many loopholes in the contract, that it's often difficult to get the warranty to pay for anything. Don't waste your money. Instead, we recommend saving that home warranty premium on your own in a high-yield savings account so that when something breaks in your home, you'll have the money to repair it. Be your own warranty!
There are a few exceptions to this rule. Read them here: clark.com/homes-real-estate/home-warranty/
Hope this helps! 💚
Friend of mine bought a house 2 years ago, and bought a rider from her home insurance company, covering any major repairs during the first year. It paid off! The rider was around $250, but it paid for a $2000 repair on a ruptured main water supply line, between the sidewalk and the house.
If you’re trying to teach a young child to save money… do not use a bank and do not listen to Clark about Fidelity. Teach the child to use fake phony Fiat currency to buy God‘s money - silver coins! Real tangible wealth that you can hold!
GE is the best value. They were bought out by a Chinese company but still have major investments in the U.S. and the appliances are made globally. GE has their own dedicated repair techs. Be sure to buy it everything with a credit card that provides the extended warranty benefits. The Assurance extended warranties are very valuable if you're considering dropping $3,000 for a touch screen induction range. When you 1st register the appliances you'll get the best offer typically 40-50% off as long as a 5 year warranty. 1 of the 3 control boards in an induction range can cost up to $800 to replace. The warranty was $280 for 5 years.
A lot of Credit Cards dropped the benefit of extended warranty.
China is a no go.
@@talisikid1618 well Good Luck with that the guts from nearly every appliance made comes from China
@@talisikid1618 GE was purchased by Haier Group, a Chinese owned company, in 2016. Since then the American manufacturing of GE products has actually increased. There around 12,000 employees working at GE manufacturing facilities across the USA. They produce a range of appliances, including washers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, and cooking appliances. GE Appliances is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, and has manufacturing facilities in Kentucky, Alabama, and Tennessee.
A GE appliance designated 'Made in America' has 70% to 90% US- based content. This includes parts, factory operations and wages, according to the GE Appliance website.
Good information but we differ on the extended warranty advice. 💚
