    Brilliant! It never occurred to me to directly connect a a stepper to an encoder without a micro-controller in the middle.

    This is exactly what I'm trying to find. I agree completely. Either the other vids are arduino and go on and on about what you don't want to know or they just show that it works in 23 seconds and that's the end. I've got a question. Did you try to take the 5 volt out from the driver and use it to power the pulse encoder instead of the wall wart? I'm trying to figure out a way to move a mill table quickly with a joystick, and then use the encoder wheel for tiny adjustments. Also, have you tried to control step size with the dip switches on the driver instead of the pulse generator board? I was messing around with one of those last year and I was having the same problem that you are and I think I either used full steps on the driver and controlled fast, med, slow on the pin connections of the generator, or I set the driver to like 1/60, and pulled the pin connector off the generator. I think when the driver is already set to a fraction and then do the same thing on the generator you end up with both trying to fractionalize (not sure that's a word) the steps and it won't work. My memory isn't that great though. Thanks for the video!

      Hi Bill. There was no 5 volts out on the controller i have, the power input is just 9 to 40 volts. Which i assume is governed by the voltage of whatever stepper motor you use. I would use some alternative psu for the hand wheel if i were to install this setup for anything. Possibly just the guts from a 12 to 5 volt converter like you get in a cigar lighter usb charger in a car.
      The pulse generator board would move the stepper motor faster, and i did consider this when i was messing about with it. But it is pretty fast and my requirement was just to move my router 2 or 3 inches.
      I'm not sure what you get out of a joystick. If it's a basic one with simple direction microswitches, you could possibly use two controllers to run the same stepper motor in parallel with diodes to block feedback from one to the other, with the controllers set at different pulse rates. If it's a linear pot one like you get on a cctv ptz controller, you could use this in replacement of the speed pot on the pulse generator. You would require four pulse generators to get the four axis though i would think.
      Not sure if that would work, but it would be at the top of my try list if i was looking for that result.
      For someone with a bit more interest in arduino than me, that would probably be the way to go for something more complicated that what i needed. I was more interested in simplicity and i knew there must be a way. I simply couldn't find anyone else who had posted a simply video.
      I have yet to do anything more with this. After i made the video i left all the kit connected together and put it in a box and stored it away in that place you put projects to do later.

      Not on the 6600 i had. I think the closest i could get was about 3:1, But i wasn't looking to read the scale on the dial because i was driving a screw thread via a bevel gear anyway, so nothing would correlate.

    You can pull 5v off a tb6600 and don’t need a USB power supply.
