    I recently started watching your videos, starting with the 2023 Henley and jumping about from there. Thank you for your refreshing approach to competition and fitting it into life. I have decades of competitive sports experience (running and rowing and sculling) and recently felt discouraged about the whole experience of going to a regatta - your videos have made me want to get to the starting line again.
    I am an American but went to university and learned to row and scull in England so I am interested to hear why you and your parents decided that high school and university in the States was the place for you. I just wanted to travel!
    I'd love to see you race your single at Head of the Charles...

      Thanks for watching! I ended up in the states to explore my opportunities with basketball after I finished high school in Scotland. From there discovered rowing and received a scholarship to university. My parents didn't "send" me anywhere.

    Really enjoyed your story, Cam. Saw this after seeing your 2nd place singles trials video, so it has clearly been a journey. Coincidence that I also spent time at Kent School as a math teacher and rowing coach (mostly coaching the girls) from 2000-2005. I'm certain you still enjoy hoops quite a bit.

    It was interesting regarding your comments about transitioning from Leander to Team GB. I live in Australia and one of my trainers at the gym where I was working out tried out the transition from playing Australian rules football at his local football club to playing at one of the clubs in the state football league (one step up). He said the jump was quite substantial in terms of the intensity of training and the level of football they expect out of you in the state league. One can only wonder what its like in the national league. I think he transitioned back to his local football club because he wasn't enjoying it. I'm pretty sure it wasn't due to his fitness levels because he was super fit when I knew him. With this in mind, I was surprised that the move from Leander to Team GB wasn't bigger than what you described.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 года назад

      Definitely can be big surprises when switching to different levels. Even just switching clubs! We were essentially doing the program at Leander that they do at Caversham before I moved across so the fitness and knowing what to expect was definitely there just other factors that just meant, like your friend, the enjoyment started to fade

    Really good video Cameron. I am wondering if you could offer some advice as it seems you were in a similar situation with basketball and transitioning to rowing. I am 14 and have been playing rugby since I was young, it was my passion and I now play for club and academy, however at school I have been rowing for the last few years but only really taking it very seriously that last 10 months. I have been enjoying it so much and want to fully commit to rowing as it is what I love. Any advice on how to stop rugby or just do less?

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  3 года назад +3

      Ultimately the decision is yours. If you wantg to stop rugby, then the only way to stop is to stop. I would say you are still young so have plenty of time to choose!

    i assume you are not yet finished as an elite athlete but have you ever considered coaching at a club/school. It is a sustainable job and you can train with good equipment on a relatively free schedule, as well as keep doing videos.

    You aiming to do all the Munros? I was up Ben More and Stob Binnein in July although a slightly different route than yours to avoid that slog up the front of Ben More. I don’t think it was much easier. Big hills.

    you come from uni and then straight to leander ? can you even do that ? impressive...serious question though - can you still make the international squad given your current location / setup ? or have you chosen to address that goal in the future ?

    What were your times like the first time you started rowing? (first time doing a 2k/1k etc) .... i just tried a 2k for the first time on a concept2 rowing machine i got 6:28 and 2:57 for 1k with no training... just wondering if theres potential to improve to a decent level... im not a tall athlete only 180cm. Just be curious to what times you got the first time using the concept2

      @@judicus5138 wow impressive. I see henrik stephansen has some good times being a smaller athlete under 6min for 2k at his size is very impressive. No reason why it cant be done then. I managed 6:18.9 on 2nd ever attempt for 2k. No where near as good as henrik but i am 238lb 5'11 so heavyweight rower.
