    On the spare mag I do because of Clint from Thunder Ranch's story about getting out of the car, catching the mag and the baseplate broke leaving him a single shot gun. I don't expect to reload or clear a malfunction in a fight with it, but something dumb like catching the baseplate just right and making your pistol all but worthless until you manage to get home.

      I get what you're saying, and obviously I'm not going to judge you for carrying a spare mag(especially since up until a year or two ago when I switched to a sig p365xl I carried a spare mag every day), but my thoughts on that are, how likely is that to happen to you at all(especially if you carry IWB or appendix), and perhaps more importantly, what are the odds that that one day it happens will be the day you need your gun to save your life, especially considering how rare it is to get into such a scenario in the first place? Also, couldn't you just put the base plate back on/reassemble the mag?
      I love Clint Smith, but I think he goes a bit overboard sometimes. For example when he says things like you shouldn't ride horses or motorcycles because you could get seriously hurt(which I can certainly understand for motorcycles, but horses?), or not to go to the beach because most shark attacks happen in 2-3 ft of water. Granted, I don't know how serious he is when he says these things, but he doesn't seem like he's joking. He's still #1 on my bucket list of people to train with though. Unfortunately I get very little vacation time, and I live about as far away from Oregon as its possible to be and still be in the lower 48.

      I carry spare for similar reasons, but also for comfort. My cushioning in front precludes comfortable AIB carry so I use strong side IWB. My tiny shield (7+1) is light, but still makes me lopsided. Carrying spare (8) on other side makes for better balance and comfort. Guess a second spare would make for better balance, but this is good enough.

    Also, I think there's a very good reason to carry a spare magazine: not because it'll help you win your gunfight, but because if you were in a situation serious enough that you had to discharge your firearm, you don't want to be walking around with diminished capacity.

    Great video!
    Regarding spare mags, it’s a personal decision.
    To me, it depends on 3 things:
    1) Confidence level in the installed magazine
    2) Ability to clear common malfunctions without loss of installed magazine
    3) Comfort level on how many available rounds the person feels that they need.
    For example:
    If I’m carrying a ppk with its 7 round capacity then yeah, I’m gonna need extra mags. If my p365 has follower issues that sometimes cause rounds to hang up, then I might need an extra mag that has proven to be problem free. If my HK had zero feed issues, and I can clear all malfunctions while hanging onto that one mag, and I’m comfortable with the 12 round capacity, then I might be ok with not carrying extra mags.

    "Every person has a picture of how their gunfight goes." This includes the armed robber. When this picture goes off-script, there is a momentary disconnect until the internal image and reality merge. That's how armed robbers have the tables turned on them--the victim doesn't follow the robber's script. I don't know how well I'll adapt if I'm ever in a gunfight and it doesn't go my way--the force-on-force gunfight training I did in the military isn't real, there was low chance of being injured and almost no chance of dying on the training ranges and I was aware of the active threat and I had committed to shooting during the training scenario. When wearing a concealed firearm, I'm committed to NOT shooting. Firing is the exception.

    On reloads - after using a firearm in self defense, I would want to then reload to return my gun to full capacity and thus capability. I've heard you say roughly a third of Self defense encounters involve multiple attackers (if I'm not misquoting), so I'd want to be ready in case there is a second threat that I'm not aware of. I'm sure the police would then take my firearm at some point of the investigation, but I could still defend myself until they arrived. But this is just me speculating.

    Lot's of times in stressed evolutions I've cleared a malfunction without thinking about it, on the move... strip, rack, reload continue, without stopping. It's how we train.
    So... should it happen that I have a serious malfunction I don't want to be picking a mag off the deck because I processed the stoppage the way we've trained for 20years.

    I still question the reliability of having never seen a mag reload used. The data needs to at least be based on encounters where people actually even had a spare mag. I would guess the overwhelming majority of carriers, don't carry an extra mag on their person. And that definitely biases the observation that they never get used.

    • @ASPextra
      @ASPextra  2 года назад

      No they don’t. The analysis is based off of the timing in the fight and what happens. It is rare to see someone empty the gun entirely, and we can time from there when that rarity DOES happen if a reload would make a difference.

    I stopped carrying a spare mag a year or two ago when I switched from over a decade of carrying a g19/g23 to a p365xl(which I love BTW.) Actually, even with the g19 I only sometimes carried a spare mag, which is probably worse than always not carrying one, as at least I wouldn't think I have a spare mag when I really don't.)
    Being a fan of your channel I've watched a lot of videos/shootings/self defense scenarios, and I agree they often happen so quickly that theres no time to reload, whether because you're out of ammo, are doing a tac reload, or experience a doublefeed or something.
    My question is, what percentage of the people in the videos you watch/analyze even carry a spare mag to begin with? What I mean is, if barely any of the people in the videos who get into a self defense shooting even have a spare mag on them, then obviously they can't do a reload. Not only that, but if they don't have training, and haven't made reloading their gun an essentially sub-conscious action, then they still might not have the wherewithall(or even skill) to perform a reload in the middle of a shooting.
    I guess the real/more important question would be, "what percentage of the people in your benefits would have benefited from having a spare mag on them? Granted, I imagine its still probably going to be a very, small number/percentage, just curious what you would put that number at.
    Regardless, at times I feel like it's kind of overkill to carry a gun, a knife(sometimes two), a flashlight, sometimes even a trauma kit(though thats pretty rare, but I do keep a pretty serious trauma kit(among other things) in each car and in a couple places in the home), etc. just to navigate the streets of suburban Connecticut. Lol. It's actually funny. Some of my friends and family carry, or at least own guns, but by far most don't. So I often feel very weird when someone finds out I carry(especially if I'm carrying at that moment.) Nobody's ever made fun of me, or criticized me for it, but it does make me question why I carry, or how rational it truly is. But then I'll watch some of the RUclips channels I follow, or talk with guys at the range or gun stores, and feel the opposite. It makes me wonder if we've all gotten wrapped around the axle about carrying guns/self defense(especially how much time and money people put into, particularly as compared to other things that are more likely to save their lives like stopping smoking, excersizing, medical training, or even things like martial arts, or just wearing a god damn seat belt. Lol.
    Okay, I'm rambling. Too much red bull this morning. Lol. Thanks as always for the educational videos, and I can't wait for the rest of the videos from this talk!

      Interesting. The p365xl and p365 are the only pistols that I own that I do carry a spare mag for. This is because of the feed issues the model had in the beginning and the American made mags (vs Italian)/followers. I had too many feed issues initially… I haven’t had too many recently but what I experienced was enough to convince me that a backup mag (of different make/model to loaded one) was a good idea for me.
      Reloads are definitely a personal decision.

    I got into it hard with a fb fudd offering to train teachers. He made a post saying to buy a hammerless taurus 856 and ammo and he will teach you to stop an active shooter. Hes certainly a qualified and vetted instructor, going back to '82. I just wanna bang my head aginst the wall when he tells me its so much harder to teach a woman to shoot a mag fed autoloader.

    Second mags are more about being prepared for things beyond the scope of self defense from criminal attackers. That's much further down the curve.

    What about that one guy you covered that did a battle field pick up? Does that count as a reload? Or no cause I think it was Brazil so it may have been an off duty (disqualify cause it was a cop)

    • @ASPextra
      @ASPextra  2 года назад

      Off duty incidents do qualify; we separate on-duty incidents only. He never actually used the gun he picked up, just picked it up. So its presence didn’t affect the fight.

    Not sure when you recorded this and of course I'd have to go back and look but I'm pretty sure you've done a video recently that showed a civilian or a off-duty cop acting in a civilian capacity using a reload. And if not that I'm sure there's plenty of examples of people expending their magazine and then wishing they had a reload when there's more than one attacker.

    I carry a spare mag because you never know. The chance that having a spare magazine on hand can make a difference may be extremely small, but it’s not 0%. I live in a restricted state, so we’re limited to 10 beans in the blaster.
    Having the extra 10 could make all the difference in the world if I’m on one side of a building with my wife and child on the other side and a shooter between us. There are times when a private citizen may have to press into the encounter.

    I submit that every 6-shot gunfight is a data point that J-frame users need a reload. And every 7-shot gunfight points to that need for the traditional revolver carrier. Now, where you stop this investigation into how much is enough is beyond the scope of a RUclips comment, but just because you haven't *seen* it happen doesn't mean that it didn't *need* to happen.

    I would like to think if people received more proper firearms training you would see individuals reloading in a self-defense situation. But when a gun locks up on your average gun toting citizen, they manage to go into vapor lock themselves as opposed to smoothly and rapidly correcting the problem and getting back into action.

    • @ASPextra
      @ASPextra  2 года назад

    • @theprepperrevelator
      @theprepperrevelator 2 года назад +3

      The police have zero obligation to protect you, the Supreme Court has made that determination multiple times. Second what if the police are the target and maybe you could save lives! Lastly unless you are leaving in a locked secured safe in your car you are potentially arming criminals. I’m not judging you just giving food for thought. Stay safe and stay frosty,

    How do you know if a person in a gun fight even had the option to reload? How do you know if a person owns an extra mag? Is the magazine capacity of the self defender taken into consideration? Also, if your mag is malfunctioning and you don’t have an extra one, you essentially have a one shot pistol. Worth it? Um, no. IDK seems like a lot of variables to make that assumption.

    Slow your role in the beginning of your presentation. Draw people in with some thought provoking questions and a couple real world and hypothetical break downs. Death by PowerPoint is the worst form of torture. If you must use PowerPoint, blank it out when you've hit that point. You did do decent with recognizing people by name and great with the humor.

      Yes practice as much as time and money allows as gun skills are perishable. Also take some tactical pistol training. Standing at the gun range shooting at static targets isn’t how a gun fight takes place. Everyone is moving in a gun fight.
      Without the training you don’t even know what it is you don’t know
