I have had my Lighting for a couple years now. Love to fly it. I have folding prop, 3s 800mah and my cg is at the LE. Mine rolls ok. Even buried LEDs in the wings and it is much heavier but still flies beautifully. In a high wind the wings flap like crazy but the EPP is so strong it doesn't break. I also laminated the tail. My goto plane.
Andrew, you sounded Soo amused and satisfied with this bird that you convinced me in getting one. I need another plane like I need another hole in my head . Thanks for the review*
That was great example of having to tweak the plane for proper flight. You tweaked it and the difference in the plane's behavior was readily evident. Always worth watching your videos.
Good explanation of the two ways to use UHU Por. Sir Matthew Ogborne noted this in an old build video of his and that's the way I have been using it since. Allows you to line up joints before it dries completely, and after a few minutes it won't come apart!
can hear it in your voice you really enjoyed flying this, and what a great wing/plank/fun flyer, but in your slope video thats where it really is at, the perfect powered slope wing that if you lose lift give a bit of throttle to get it back
It's a copy of the old epp Alula! That indeed brought back memories the videos I use to gock overall few years back. A stiffer spar ,a little goop, a little sanding and some laminate; you would have been definitely ready for a bit of wind. Very inspirational my friend.
Very nice. I love the way it flies like a huge hawk. All you need to do is glue some feathers on the wing tips ha ha . This build gives us lots of ideas how to make an aircraft out of spare wings left over from crashes in the past, or to make one out of spare foam just laying around. Good job. Waiting to see it on a slope. Happy Flying
Joe Lewandowski that’s what I’m going to do with my build, use stiffer spars, laminate it, and probably coat the nose with some flexible epoxy . I’m pretty sure you can sand down the fuselage corners and make it more round and aerodynamic as well.
What a neat little build !!! Nice stuff, I started a foam board free build i haven't gotten back to since i realized i built two right side wings LOL this makes me want to go at it again. Love your work. Thank you!!!
". . . as luck would have it, it is turning the right way!" I know that feeling hahaha. Great video. I've always wondered about this little planes. Well done.
@@AndrewNewton I finally picked one up to build during lockdown. Love these all EPP planes, they're so easy to mod. All you need is flat stock and FoamTac. Ended up enlarging the fuse and made it into a twin tractor. Your vid was really excellent because we can really get a good idea of the flight characteristics when you wring them out like you do! I'm hoping to add FPV to it soon. Maidened last week, flew a few packs through it today. It's a nice gentle/efficient flier.
Maybe for saving some weight 5g servos would work also. And off course small ESC, shorten all wires, using smaller motor and lighter battery. Not sure if this will match the needed weight distribution.
BG link working "check" DLG throw somewhat working.. "check" ordered one :) (few years ago i ordered the DW eagle, didn't look pretty, told myself never to buy a DW again but still works 2 year later.) So ordered the Lighting, and a eagle (the old eagle is teaching my dad to fly)
I added a 8mm spar to the wing, cut ailerons, switched them from the original side, then added the nano talon stabilizer and placed the servo so they would work with the stabilizer without reversing. Added a flitetest style powerpod with 2217 1050kv motor, 9x5 prop and a 2200 3s.
Looking forward to the slope maiden but would be a little concerned at the servo's positioned under the wing. Could do with some "credit card" skids to protect them
Cool little wing, and so nice and quiet compared to a pusher setup! The fin just needs a bit of flat CF strip letting into it - you could see it flexing from side to side in flight on the rearward facing video. That might even have been affecting the rolls (although more aileron throw and more speed would obviously help).
So Andrew, what reflex did you ultimately stay with? I have one of these but on maiden it flew so wildly I put it up and didn't get back to it. After seeing your success I want to get it sorted. Thanks, keep up with your great videos. Always practical and informative.
Great vid Andrew, their on special at Alibaba today for au$36 delivered! next on my list, I just ordered a chinese J10 prop epp board plane for au$25 delivered! (amongst other bits) The Plank looks like a must have for the wing people :-D Again great vid
Actually flying fixed wing give me more grin smile than flying drone. But cant find a field in my area except crowded football field, so sad cant flying fixed wing again
Did you set it up for slope and fly it? I saw this plane and thought it would be an inexpensive way to start slope soaring but someone else said don't bother... Lol! Looks fun!
Lighting or Lightning? 😁 It’s hard to get a wing like this under 250g with fpv too. Great edit! When you started laughing etc. That was my feeling when I first got my mini AR wing flying 😁
Great little flyer, and a great videoi as always! Andrew, at the beginning of the video you mentioned your 'slowest flyer' and pointed to it behind you at the wall, but unfortunately I didn't get the name of the plane - so could please write it down here for me?
I think this is the one you mean: ruclips.net/video/3zlXiIOzS7s/видео.html - All Andrew's videos seem to be named in a way that makes them easy to search, so you can go to the channel and use the search function to find pretty much anything. (Another useful and enjoyable video on the "Lighting" too, Andrew, thanks - got me tempted to use next month's pocket money to buy one!)
Mr. Andrew, can you provide a link to where you got your little motor? I know I can use any that is suggested on the Manual, but I really like how the one you use fits. Thanks *
A “powered wing glider” instead of a flying wing. A tractor wing is unusual, but the lack of noise that is normally associated with a flying wing is nice.
Love the honest realistic view on the reviews. Please keep it up.
Will do. Thanks for noticing.

Such fun, slow, light wing acrobat. Hope you like it as much as I do
An initial glide test is always imperative.
What a gorgeous fun little plane.
I always recommend a glide test. Pity I dont listen to my own advice.
Lol
That was great example of having to tweak the plane for proper flight. You tweaked it and the difference in the plane's behavior was readily evident. Always worth watching your videos.
Thanks Danny. It is so light my dumb mistake didn't cause any harm.
Nice little plank, looking forward to seeing the sloping video
Thanks for the tip about uhu por. It will be much easier to use when I have time to adjust
Yes you can get into trouble with the instant grip
Late too the party getting this wing but I've got too say, what a fun wing too fly. Thank for the video really helped.
Yes it's a great light weight design
I didn't think it would be that good. Remarkable. And those loopings, loved it!
Yes lots of fun. As a light weight guru I think you would enjoy it.
Very nice I always did like plank type wings.
Good explanation of the two ways to use UHU Por. Sir Matthew Ogborne noted this in an old build video of his and that's the way I have been using it since. Allows you to line up joints before it dries completely, and after a few minutes it won't come apart!
Saves mis aligned joins

I think I'd be tempted to reinforce the tail, install another servo and try the tail out as a rudder.

It's a sweetie. Lots of fun.

Yes, a great basic design that can be adapted
Bet that will slope soar lovely
As soon as conditions allow
Great review and great plane. Just the plane for a leisurely fly 👍
Awesome setup and maiden flight!
That's a crazy little bird😃👏👏👍👍
Nice, i just ordered mine.
Simply WOW! That's a great plane.😁🇬🇧👍
Looks like it would make a good slope soaring glider

Very nice informative video.
Wonderful acrobats near ground Andrew. Lighting DLG....) Loved this little bird.
Yes, so much fun for close in acrobatics
Always a pleasure to watch you work your magic :)
What a neat little build !!! Nice stuff, I started a foam board free build i haven't gotten back to since i realized i built two right side wings LOL this makes me want to go at it again.
Love your work. Thank you!!!
Ha, need to get on to those left wings.
Very nice model and an easy build too.
Looks like you got yourself a keeper.
So let us all see it at the slope when weather permits.
Cheers
ASAP
Cool littel plane👍
Congratulations on a successful Maiden! Wow! With such light wing loading you really can fly that in pretty tight area ;-) See you in the Air!
Yes, lots of close-in fun
". . . as luck would have it, it is turning the right way!" I know that feeling hahaha. Great video. I've always wondered about this little planes. Well done.
A memorable day when the ESC is connected correct first time.

Always need to keep the CG in the same spot

Certainly quirky designs. A few freinds have DW Eagles and it took a while to like them, but they are still flying, same as you.

Seagulls are going to love that one at the beach.
Will need a bit more weight though I guess.
Yes ballast will be needed
Looking forward to the slope maiden but would be a little concerned at the servo's positioned under the wing. Could do with some "credit card" skids to protect them
I have been a litle concerned about how exposed the arms are.
You should try the Alula trek then... pure fun but without motor , a pure bird . try it !
Yes it's a beautiful glider, but way too expensive by the time it gets to Australia.
Andrew Newton , yeah I agree , it was expensive to Italy too
I have an alula, sadly they've been out of stock for 6months. Considering one of these as a slope soarer. $40 on Amazon

I think you're right, and I have done exactly that.
very Alula like and should be fun to slope. ps love your clever low tech endings :)
Lot's of creative fun making them
It looks tailheavy.
With my Alula I had to turn the elevators down to 20 with the ailerons at 60 as they were very sensitive.
YES, I'll do that. Thanks for the tip.
Could you stiffen it up and put a bigger motor on it and see what speed you can get out of it.
but... why? you can put whatever you like but why not use a plane the way it was designed ? If you need speed better to get a funjet etc
So Andrew, what reflex did you ultimately stay with? I have one of these but on maiden it flew so wildly I put it up and didn't get back to it. After seeing your success I want to get it sorted. Thanks, keep up with your great videos. Always practical and informative.
I'll check next time I fly it
You are a master pilot and salesman! Maybe this one will be flexible enough to let me practice crashing?
Must keep practicing to perfect those crashes
Did you set reflex back to level or just a bit up . really looks like a hawk profile flying. really maneuverable little thing very cool Andrew. 👍
Still up a few mm. I'll check again next flight.

Sweet, must keep an eye on Ali

nice vid

Someone doesn't know what they are talking about. It's an ace light wind sloper. ruclips.net/video/icx8E5K4znk/видео.html
Lighting or Lightning? 😁
It’s hard to get a wing like this under 250g with fpv too.
Great edit!
When you started laughing etc. That was my feeling when I first got my mini AR wing flying 😁
Some models do that to you.
Andrew Newton yup agreed 😉
I've just got a mini ar wing hoping I don't smash it up on my first flight lol
That. Is. Awesome.
Can you recommend any other inexpensive models that fly similarly, ie slow and fun, from banggood or other chinese sites?
This is the slowest I have come across. Skysurfer X9 is a lovely slow flier
Great little flyer, and a great videoi as always! Andrew, at the beginning of the video you mentioned your 'slowest flyer' and pointed to it behind you at the wall, but unfortunately I didn't get the name of the plane - so could please write it down here for me?
Toro Wing, don't know if it's sold any more. This one was cut out for me by a friend.
Any recommendations for folding prop/motor setup? Want to keep it as light as possible and maybe thermal hunt.
Any small quad motor, but finding a folding prop to fit will be hard.
Perfect for slope soaring you have a seagull in your hands
Yes I wonder how they will react
Where is the link to the pushrod build video?
Gaahh, forgot sorry. I'll add it now. ruclips.net/video/3zlXiIOzS7s/видео.html

I think it came from another plane but don't recall which.
Just remembered. The motor is an 1806 1300kV from the Mirage VTOL wing ruclips.net/video/9_KWqU4Gc0E/видео.html
@@AndrewNewton
Brilliant! Thank you
I apologise, but FIRST
Edit, actually, I do have an intelligible question on behalf of a friend: does uhu por work on depron?
It does but much cheaper and equally as good is Gorilla white wood glue but of course you don't get an instant bond.
I usually ignore FIRST comments but yours is good. Yes it does work well.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll let friend-in-question know. Ill take a look for that gorrilla white glue stuff, cheap sounds good :P
A “powered wing glider” instead of a flying wing. A tractor wing is unusual, but the lack of noise that is normally associated with a flying wing is nice.
Haha low noise = low power, needs more power to the warp engines for the noise :-D
Haha, your inner hoon is showing Chris
Has some weird tendencies.
Goid deal, thanks for the video.
The tail does need some stiffing
I have stiffed it
Andrew Newton how? Tape?
I glassed mine and dsed it to 160 mph.
Wow, that would be a transformation
Carbon fibre arrow shaft would stop that wing flex they are stupid light
It would but being super light makes it what it is
Dont try to teach rc grandpa how to use Uhu.
Haha, I make this stuff up as I'm filming!
👍😛🤣
Now I feel like a jerk for pointing out it being a plank 😂😂😂
No need. I have learned something. Thanks
They fly like shit
Yours maybe
