Agree on the PPP quality this year was terrible. I did want one but had to be very patient to find the “right” one. Ultimate got a TC teenager with 4 growth points and tons of pink for $40 when I have been seeing stores sell 3 leaf cuttings for $99 with just flecks of pink. As someone just enjoying my plants not trying to make money in plants but just enjoy them in my home, everything in this video fits with the lesson I have learned: wait for the right plant at the right price.
Same. Found one in San Antonio with 5 largish leaves for $175, it’s exploded and haven’t lost a single leaf. My opinion? Bc it’s not a TC but a mother plant cutting
I’m so over the PPP. I’m part of a purge page on Facebook and it’s the only thing everyone sells and I’m so bored with it!!
@@plantheavenasmr1079 haha yeah I think a lot of people who got it for the hype are dumping it or even if they liked it are trying to get their money back on cuttings bc they overpaid. Fortunately my local group is good in terms of plant diversity but I can understand the frustration to just keep seeing the same thing.
I remember when PPP first came out in the 70's. It was just expected to be a simple variegated plant and not the one everyone wants today. The one with half or quarter pink leaves on most of the plant. Where I live we found it in the nurseries sold as an annual to add to planted containers! LOL You bought it knowing you could it bring in inside as a houseplant. :) What a shock it was to see what happened recently! I bought one in the past for $15 for a large 6" pot.

Syngonium was supposed to be “ best plant” the past year. I didn’t get the hype from the beginning because they just aren’t all that. I predict anything variegated , aurea , albo, pink , red, black is going to be the hottest shit.
@@danibecker3911 Basically the same from 2020 and 2021?? I guess people are going for more Extra Rare Plants now since almost everyone already filled their collections a lot.
I agree and make it positive and happy 😊 as we all know plants made us happy and survive the uncertainty of global Covid-19 to 2022 .
I got a PPP for $30 at a local greenhouse, it’s beautiful, has fantastic variegation and had a full moon leaf, it unfortunately died off but continues to put out great colors and has at least 4 babies growing.
For Thai's two things... 1) a friend who shops for plants down in southern Florida noted that many growers have them outside in full sun. So I moved mine outside my greenhouse and it was happy as a clam and upsized very quickly. 2) When I went to do my first propogation I decided to air layer. It was awkward because nodes were tight so I simply attached half a air layer ball filled with damp moss over a large air root and It rooted up SO quickly. Within a few weeks I had a giant root and cut it. In the future I'm going to use this every time because of how successful it was. And once the chilly temps are done here my Thai is going back outside.

Airlayering is a must imo. I do not understand why ppl wouldn't do it. I always do it when I play to propagate some cuttings from one of my mother plants and so far had 100% success.

ALL the shade on the spider mites!! I loved the alocasia stingray and tried to over winter in Ohio multiple times, bust dang they were a 🧲 for me
I bought a huge basket of philodendron Brasil about a year ago and honestly, the majority of it looks like cream splash. I’ve heard multiple people have this same complaint with them, and tbh, I have no interest in buying the “cream splash” because I’ve just decided it’s they’re the same plant, one just has prettier variegation 🤷🏼♀️😂💜
I have the Rio and Brazil. The Rio shouldn't touch sunlight, cuz the white parts burn....even when pulled feet away from the western windows.
My lupinum is still alive and growing… it just can’t breathe the same air as me and it’s fine.
I hateeeee the lupinium that plant pulled spider mites like there is no tomorrow anddd the leaves it made were soooo tiny and crunched 40€ wasted i binned it
After a couple months as it was just not working with me and i deeply regret getting it xD

For the true plant-lover at heart, we don't buy plants necessarily based on their prices, popularity, because they are "trending", or the failure we will inevitably have with some of them. We buy them because of the joy they bring to us as a hobby of care, and asthetically. If you're buying a plant because it's "trending", you are not a true Gardner's soul. But I will say, many plants"trend" because they are genuinely beautiful and good news spreads. The fact that they go up in price is simply because of demand. In my opinion, no plant's over rated, just over priced.
Well said. I also tire of people who constantly bandy the word 'rare' about when relatively speaking, the plants in this video are freely available where both I and many other people live and with one exception, all of them can be picked up for less than $15 each. For example, several months ago I picked up an absolutely gorgeous Philodendron 'Pink Princess' for the equivalent of $8 and it's an absolutely wonderful plant, especially being as I can provide the perfect growing conditions for it. However, sadly there are far too many unscrupulous growers/sellers who take plants out of their natural environment and then sell them on to unwitting individuals who can provide neither the necessary heat and/or humidity to keep them looking their best which then results in such plants unfairly gaining a poor reputation.

You were spot on about Philodendron Pink Princess. My friend has one and it never had any leaves with pink. Zero. No matter how she did, the pink never showed up. Demands for Philodendrons, Colocasias, Anthuriums, Caladiums exploded since 2020 until recently when price has dropped in Malaysia.

I definitely agree on the chaotic-ness of the variegation in the Philodendron hederaceum sports (Brasil/Silver Stripe/Cream Splash/Gabby/Rio), though I tend to feel like that fact makes the prices of the Gabby the most wild to me, and kinda makes me love the Cream Splash & Silver Stripe. The Rio makes sense to me as being a bit distinct with it's darker silvery green middle stripe, but I just feel like with the Silver Stripe, Cream Splash, and Gabby, the variegation can vary so much from leaf to leaf that it just doesn't make sense to me to try to separate those out as three distinct things with such drastically different price points. And I feel like there's a ton of misinformation constantly circling about them too, i.e. that the determining factor of whether or not a high variegation one of these can be considered a "true Gabby" is whether or not it came from Gabriella's or that Gabriella's has a patent for Gabby (which I've seen the owner of Gabriella's disagree with multiple times). It just doesn't seem like there is shared, common understanding of how these plants are related, categorized, and named, and how much the variegation can vary. I kinda love the chaotic-ness of the variegation, because my "Silver Stripe" has semi-regularly put out leaves that if I just went off of one of those ID charts have a "Gabby" like variegation pattern, and I love propagating these because the variegation of new leaves can be so wildly varied depending on where on the stem the auxiliary bud happens to be (I've gotten a half moon green & silver leaf that I absolutely love), but yeah, from the perspective of selling them to people who then expect their variegation to be consistent and stable and for every leaf to have variegation that falls within the range of what's typically associated with the cultivar name it was sold as, that definitely seems tricky!
I just drafted a comment that's almost identical to this one. I agree completely, I got given a plant four-ish years ago that has 5' long vines on it now, and it's got leaves to match almost every striped variegation diagram I've seen. It'll be better when people can find 4" pots of cream-variegated Brasil easily, with more realistic expectations, and growing the plant out won't be such an ordeal. I think it looks great the way it is.
I have an adansonii that used to have holes. And then one day it just stopped. Like, I just get large unfenestrated leaves. At first I was disappointed, but it grew on me and now I love it. Lol

Philodendron El Choco Red is absolutely one of my favorite plants. I rooted the big cutting (2 leaves that were like like 20 cm each, no aerial roots at all) I got in water, and I had absolutely no issues what so ever, and I've done the same with a few cuttings from it. Super easy, absolutely no issues what so ever.
Maybe some specimens are trickier than others! I definitely really, really want one eventually. If NSE Tropicals lists some in a few months and i save up some money, i may splurge because usually they have very high-quality plants. They seem like plants that, once you have an established specimen that has rooted well, they seem to grow decently

Hi Kaylee, nice to see you again! It's funny about El Choco, I bought unrooted cutting that was cheaper than Paraiso Verde, showed it in PON and forgot about it and now it's growing like a weed. I guess the "forgot about it" part was my good luck. Sometimes it seems I am better off not knowing if the plant is hard or easy, I would be hovering over it and dying off anxiety (and killing it, checking the roots constantly) if I knew. I had no plans whatsoever to get a PPP, ever! I find the growth habit unappealing and in the absence of very good variegation, I find the color quite muddy & not cute. But I was gifted one for Christmas and now I’m quite invested in it’s progress. It has adequate variegation on the leaves & quite a lot of pink in the stem. I’ll probably end up taking a few cuttings to add to the pot, so it’s more of a bush. Then I’m never going to cut it & pray for pink 💖 🪴
I got mine at a nursery last summer and it's been wonderful. Give it good light and that's helped my variagation so much. I have it near grow light and it's giving me beautiful half moon leaves. I live in new England and misting my PPP has also helped it greatly.
Agreed 100%. Every one that I have seen is brownish and is just not cute. Pass for me.

I got my PPP one day before new year for only $12, and some leafs are bigger than my head!! She's huge and she's biggest plant in my collection. 💁♀️ They didn't know what they were selling.

The pink princess only remains any more expensive than an unvariegated philo erubescens because people are still willing to pay a lot for them. I have a friend who grows out and sells rare aroids and she says that she believes there are now substantially less unvariegated erubescens in cultivation than the ppp and that at this point it’s price and status as “rare” are entirely manufactured.

I remember when PP first came out years ago. It was sold in nurseries near me in the houseplant/annuals section! LOL You could get a large 6" potted plant for around $15 I laughed when this whole thing began

I’ve had a Cream Splash for about 6 months and it has been fantastic. I keep it in a east facing veranda and the cream has been very consistent on the leaves. Only one of the vines has reverted (completely, leaves lost both the cream and the light green parts). I cut that particular vine off and had no other problem since. I love it, even more than my P Brazil - I think the variegation is prettier and it grows faster.
Happy to hear you are feeling better. I still like the PPP, but totally get your points. I lucked out with a decent one. I like how variegation varies. Took two cuttings from mine and top is all pink leaves and other cutting is 25 percent pink.
Thanks for talking about the verrucosum. There are a lot of marvelous forms that I'd love to add to my collection but I can't afford to bring such a pest magnet into my small flat, it's too much of a risk for my aroids and orchids collection. Maybe later, when I'll have a humid greenhouse. Great content, helpfull, as usually ! ^^

Agree! Yeah it was almost insulting on a lot of those posts for sale (looked on Etsy) My local nursery starting carrying them w good variegation but it’s pricey at $480 for an 8 inch. Still impressed that they have it tho.
Costa Farms is supposed to be releasing them sometime soon.

Sooner or later, the price should come down.
Costa farms isn’t releasing them, they announced on their fb they sold off the larger plants they had to raise money for charity. Unfortunately they could not successfully grow them in numbers high enough to supply the demand. Plants kept getting rot. It wouldn’t work. Costa tried but it’s not physically possibly to mass produce these at the price people want.
Nice insights as ever, thanks Kaylee! Surprisingly my verrucosum has been pretty resilient to pests (thrips were my main issue in 2021). Maybe just that Ive not (yet) had spider mite pressure 🤞
Can we talk about PPP and leaf degradation?
You’re spot on with the PPP. I bought one two years ago from a garden store and it produced deformed leaves and often a lot of degradation markings on them (as though they had been bleached, a pale orange colour and those degradation areas feeling thinner than the rest of the leaf).
I do believe that this is not talked about enough in relation to this plant. It’s as if the PPP is the plant version of a photocopier copying one image and then taking a photocopy of the same copy then repeating until the image starts to get blurry and loses quality.
Am I wrong to assume this may be due to low quality tissue culture?
Totally agree on the pink princess !! I got mine with 3 leaves and after half a year growing… no pink at all….

I'm a bit in shock, people actually struggle with their Verrucosums? To me it feels like it's the only plants in my collection that DOESN'T end up with pests on them, and I've got quite a few now i intend to give away to friends. I mean I actively do pest prevention on it, but I think it's the only plants in my care that hasn't been attacked by pests since I got it, I bought it knowing it had spidermites tho' because it was so cheap.
Yes i have one , had spider mites once , struggled a bit to acclimate from the store to my home ( it was in bad condition ) but now it's thriving, not growing very fast but it's pretty resilient to me ! I often forget to water it and didn't repot it for 2 years ! Very beautiful plant !
I would have agreed with you a few weeks ago, but mine just recently got spider mites & I had to cut my favorite leaf that had tiny spots of sport variegation & that hurt... lol
This is the issue - many rare plants (not just PPP) have not been in great shape when I see them for sale. I do believe it's a combo of the actual plants themselves, and the sellers who may not have as much experience with plants/gardening in general? I see a lot of fast turn arounds, a lot of slap dash potting of plants, and when you combine this with cooler temps, shipping delays, etc.. it's not ideal for most plants. Can't blame sellers; they're trying to make money and live, but I as a consumer have been a lot more vigilant with who I buy from and what I buy from them.
It’s interesting regarding the release of Thai Constellation within New Zealand. Over the last 2 years there has been a large supply available through one of our more popular online plant shops. Initially they were being sold for $500 NZD ($340 USD) but have since dropped drastically in price. The cheapest I’ve seen one go for in recent weeks is $80 NZD ($50 USD). These were all imported into the country from Thailand I believe and most people haven’t had issues with propagating although root rot was definitely an issue when they were first released… It’s kind of amazing that they were able to import them in the first place as NZ has some of the toughest regulations regarding any food/plant material being brought into the country!! It seems odd that other countries are struggling with suppliers 🤔
Where have you seen those prices that is incredibly cheap. I’ve been looking for that exact plant for the last few weeks but the cheapest one I’ve found was $250 NZD however everywhere I look is out of stock 🙃🤔

The local nursery near me was selling PPPs with no variegation whatsoever for $80-$99 depending on how many leaves they had. Literally none of them had a speck of pink (fully reverted) and they were still going for that much. Hard pass!
I got lucky last summer. Found a post on Facebook from a local nursery that sold a 3" pot for $45. I was able to grab 2!

I completely agree with everything here, especially the cream splash (and silver stripe). Whenever I give a cutting of mine I always tell people how unstable they are and to except a huge variety of variegation from one leaf to the next (including all green, rio looking, brasil, def a cream splash leaf).
My little PPP cut its damn self. The new leaf went all cinderella trying to put on a shoe style but kept growing i guess and snapped the stem. I just noticed it today.

Can confirm on the ppp. I have grown mine, and not cut. It's about a foot and a half now and is producing large pink spots, whereas was just flecking when purchased. (For $20 a number of years ago)
I was gifted a rooted el choco red node and sadly it rotted and I'm so mad at myself about it. The person who gifted it to me warned me about it but glad it doesn't seem like I'm the only one who struggled
Paraiso verde is wild!! One of the prettiest mottled Philodendron when indeed provided good condition. Sorry for those who haven’t experienced that new leaf being better than the previous. That’s really Mottle mania.

I've captured a Monstera Thai Constellation for 30 euros this Autumn. I do not know why the seller made this cheap price, but I was there at the right time (2:00 a.m.) at the right place (online ad freshly offered) and made this little plant mine. Of course it only was a one-leaf-cutting, but rooted well and the eye was already sprouting. So I cut the leaf off to let the sprout grow faster and these days the second new leaf is already unfolding.
So my experience with Thai Constellation was pretty good in 2021.
My sh*t plant 2021 clearly was Rhaphidphora tetrasperma variegata. Ugly little cuttings with no roots or variegation at all. But prices like they were gold dust. So as a private buyer I will wait patiently and hope on cheaper offers for better quality plants, tissue culture or not, that is not my point.

I duly did the nail biting as it shipped - but no all good, it arrived in teeny tiny perfect health and is now putting out its first new cute wee leaf. The seller also said that she has no issues shipping them. I wonder if its a country thing, I'm in Australia.and now of course I just bought a paraiso verde cutting last night hahahahaha!!!

I also faced the same problem with Pink Princess, which also happened with White Knight as well, the variegation of them are not stable at all.
Also for the Cream splash, while it’s getting older, the cream part gets smaller. I’m thinking about chopping it, but not sure it will help or not 😓
Is it shade on the spider mites or do they just have good taste?

I've had a couple of pest issues (including spider mites) on other plants but my Majestic (sodiroi x verrucosum) has never had a pest on it and is growing really well thankfully.
I’d love to see a video where you explain WHY sellers might sell different plants and different sizes. The PPP explanation was so interesting. Wish I didn’t cut my very sad one now!
I had the opposite luck with the PPP, Pammy sent me a cutting of a reverted one and it went OFF with variegation ever since.
I couldn't agree more with you on the Cream Splash! The variegation is chaotic. Not to mention, if they dont get enough light they get gangly!

Thanks for the PPP info. Finally got a 2 leaf rooted cutting with good variegation for $35 in Dec. I'll just let her grow as and see what happens.
I didn't expect my all time favorite to be on here! We purchased an el choco red in July 2021 in California for $195 with 4 leaves, about the size of my hand. Idk if that's a good deal or not, but watching the leaves come in on this plant is priceless to me 😍 I haven't propagated it yet, but now I'm terrified to 😭 I will say though, it instantly started rooting into it's new moss pole with the first new leaf. Do you think that would increase chances of success, or is it just that difficult?

For someone like me who draws line at 15 bucks, I find it hard to understand the intensity of how much money could people loose on plants.. even with the 'rare' plants, I just wait for years until they become affordable or I just don't find those plants worth it.. 😂
Thank you I thought I was the only thrifty person in this chat !I waited many years to get a 10 foot long ()not leggy Golden Porthos it didn’t make any difference to me what’s it’s name was .it was absolutely stunning .a lady had it for almost 15 years I’ve had it for almost 10 can’t tell you how many cuttings I take off of it.gave teachers 4H kids friends people I hardly knew it’s nice to share in return I’ve had so many people leave me perennials for my yard without leaving their name .many different kinds of Peonies to daylilies Firecracker bush smoke plant I must have 25 different plant many 10 years old now .nice shared of course free .I can tell you I don’t pay very much for the original less then $ 15 she just wanted a good home was going into a nursing home. I surprised her with her own plant back to her in a beautiful pot from cuttings from he Beloved plant just on a smaller scale she has shared that with numerous friends that reside in the same nursing home kind of a spiritual plant

paraiso verde is such a pain i lost the variegation and so far its not come back, PPP i like but as you said theres not a lot of quality plants about. Welcome back great video looking forward to your next one.😊
Paraiso Verde needs so much light, the more the light and heat they get, the more the variegation appears. Its a kind of defense mechanism of the plant.
As with Variegated plants, i think they prefer a bit of direct sunlight to actually bring out the variegation even more alongside the warmer temps
My verrucosum got thrips, then got long and leggy, then started dropping yellowing leaves. So I chopped him to propagate him just in case I was going to lose the original. So far the original and the cutting are hanging on.
I had a complete difference with el choco red. I have two el Choco red seedlings and sold one. Kept one and it’s growing super beautifully to the point it’s my favorite. I was able to sell bottom cutting of it. It grows relatively fast now it’s like a medium size from a seedling in less than a year.

I got myself a PPP for my birthday in 2020 and it did okay for like a year, got some sectoral variegation on it, then in the last few months it’s just tanked. Literally leaves just falling constantly. I’m over it and it’s definitely not worth the $100 I spent on it lmaooo also my anthurium regale is a big bitch 🤦🏻♀️ definitely susceptible to fungus!

I'm not a fan of unstable variegation. I'm also a surprised that there's folks out there who will pay triple digits for plants because it "excites" them.

No clue why but my verrucosum never had any pests and I have enormous leaves.
I once had a thrip infestation that plagued my melanochrysum but my verrucosum, which was in the same tank, had none.
I also do not have spidermites.

I also found the varigated Burle Marx to drop considerably in the last few weeks. (here in Australia anyway). I paid about $230aud a month ago for 3 leaves and now they're being sold for under $100 with many more leaves... The market has been flooded with them
I was able to find beautiful PPP and El Choco Red specimens here in the US, but I did wait for the right ones to come along. My biggest struggle has been getting a new leaf to unfurl without breaking first, on my El Choco. I finally got it right for my third new leaf. It's so beautiful!! 😍
I bought my very first Thai Constellation, it rotted very fast, I have not replaced it, because the price. I have some cheaper reverted pink princess and they are just growing out, and they are putting out variegation. I love them, and I'm learning new things, and I love them.

Still cant grab the aestethic value of obliqua since plants with hole on leaf are everywhere.
Malaysian growers who plant Paraiso Verde had noticed something very unusual of their variegation. They can tolerate more sun than other philo and actually gets greener the more they're exposed.
It could be the heat.
The mottled look only came back in the shade.

I paid 100 euros for a one leaf propagation of a Thai, I felt the pain but I’ve been wanting this plants for years by now and the last two years have been such a shit show I said fuck it. It currently has a second, unfolded and beautiful leaf. I’m so glad I splurged and every morning I see it, it makes me happy. It’s dormant now but I can’t wait to see the next leaf coming. Thanks for all you do Kaylee, you taught me so much.

I agree with the Paraiso Verde! I wanted to cry whenever I remember the $300 i spent on a 2 leaf 😢🥺 it kept giving me uglier and uglier leaf every time. Now I know why people are selling 6x cheaper ($50) nowadays 😭 unlike my monstera Thai constellation, which is the best in rooting and kept growing!
I like the Thai Constellation a lot, but it's in a really awkward spot right now for me where I really want the plant and am somewhat willing to buy one at the price point it is in right now, but also not willing to splurge that much on a BEAUTIFUL plant that I know will go down in value at some point; could be two weeks from now, could be a year from now.
I dropped my verrucosum out of my collection and right into my compost pile because it brought spider mites to my other plants. Shame because they are so beautiful.
