Detailing scenery on a hillside and the scrapyard : Elvenhome EP 161

  • In this video of my N Gauge Model Railway layout Elvenhome, I continue the work of creating the the scenery on the hillside above the canal basin where the scrapyard is starting to be built on the layout. I look at some work I have been doing finally to paint some kits I bought eight years ago. The running session today sees a mix of an LNER O6 in charge of a coal train, with Tiverton Castle in charge of a rake of Collett coaches. Two to Watch makes a return in what will be an occasional series over the next few months the links to the two channels I mention are

    Thoroughly enjoyed this latest episode, and extremely humbled to get a mention. The show was super (a very substantial crowd from the outset), and such a delight to connect with yourself, Euan and Tony. Love the work around the scrap yard and the difference that the build-up of flora creates.

      Thanks very much Donald. It was a pleasure to meet up and let's hope we do so again. If you're ever in Edinburgh and fancy meeting up let me know. The show was I think the best I've been to, and that was not just because of Eastfield. It was very busy which is a good sign. I just love doing scenic work and seeing an area transform as you start effectively 3D painting with the material. Stephen

    Hi Stephen, great video as usual and food for thought about buying and making kits rather than ready to roll stock. I must also say a huge thank you for including Amberlea in your "two to watch" feature, a lovely surprise which has given me a much-needed morale boost. Chris

    Hi Stephen, the section around the canal etc has transformed from what i thought a year ago was going to be a problem into a wonderful area and the icing on the cake will be the water, it really has all come together, now a real feature. All the best.

It’s so good now to be able to concentrate on the scenic side of things. Stephen

    I can't believe it has been 7 years you have been entertaining us with your progress! And amazing are that. I love the relaxed way you explain what you are doing, without any pomposity; an everyday bloke sharing the wonders of model railways. The bank looks great and works very well with the blend of colours. Thank you for sharing your progress, as always.

I pleased if the is coming across. The bank really is looking good and it was so good to see it 'grow' in front of me as I was adding material Its one of the many things that makes this hobby such fun. Stephen

Liked the segment on the Peco truck kits, so pleased the Decal tip worked for you. It was a great pleasure to meet you, Euan and Donald Hopefully we will be able to do it again. Morning Stephen! Very much enjoyed this episode! The section of wagon kits was especially interesting as I have quite a few to build! I didn't know you could get Hunt couplings designed to fit the pockets! That was well worth knowing! I've got some RailMatch paint for when I eventually get around to painting my kits! I must admit that I had to think that by the time I'd purchased new couplings, and paint, and transfers, and had added new metal wheels, were the kits such a bargain though? Maybe not, but still fun to build! Glad you got a great bargain at MRS with those wagons! Looking forward to the next update already! All the best, Ian.

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Ian. You have to be carefull putting new wheels on PECO kits. The Farish ones are slightly wider point to point. I think PECO now sell replacement wheels. I haven’t changed the wheels on my kits. I really only do that to replace old pizza cutter wheels because they don’t run easily on code 55. If I was running on code 80 I wouldn’t need to swap them out. As for paint I am using acrylic paint from stock that I use for other things. I accept that is an added cost when starting. A set of decals is about £4 and will do I think four kits. As for the Hunt couplings I have a packet if you would like them. I am not a fan of Hunt couplings but I thought they might be worth a go on PECO wagons. This was before I discovered that PECO wagons and tankers don’t like being disassembled and that put me off fitting them. Just drop me an email with your address and I’ll happily send them to you ( I think I have few others that are for NEM pocket which you are welcome to also). Stephen

    Hi Stephen - You did better than me in holding onto the pennies at MRS😅. Good little haul of wagons for a very reasonable price. It was a pleasure to have met up with you, Donald and Tony at the show. As I said to you last week the layout is in a near finished state and I'm sure attention will turn to "improvements " as you mentioned towards the end of the video. Loved the running shot of the train going into the tunnel off the viaduct - a new angle on that one. Although I had visions of you spread eagled across the layout to get the shot 😂. The various bushes you've used with the various colours around the scrap yard are very effective indeed. 👌 Cheers Euan

    Hi Stephen, nice little buy those wagons, I do like a bargain every now and then! Also some good tips about the Peco wagon kits, I’ve made up 3 of the fish vans at the very outset of my layout and it’s something I shall certainly re-visit at some point as i will need a few to populate the harbour area.
    As for the hillside that’s looking really good, I’m looking forward to the water going in to, that area looks very good, I love all that timber in the yard. The scrap yard is coming together nicely. As for a refresh on the trees, probably about time, I’ll look forward to that happening, I really love trees on a layout, it’s another thing that bring layouts to life and I’m looking forward to having a go myself!
    I like the sound of the 2mm Society and a project forthcoming all things to look forward to.
    A really good update Stephen, cheers for now, John

      Thanks very much John. I wasn't sure how much I would have for this video and was surprised how much I had to say. It is nice to be just enjoy doing scenic work. The wagons were very much cheaper than anything else at the show, and reminded me of the price of things when I started. Even though some needed new wheels at £4 each they were so cheap I couldn't say no. Trees do make such a difference and when I first put the trees at St Eldar's churchyard they looked great. Stephen

    Stephen, Hi! Yes! Water slide transfers are a menace, but! I first spray the model with gloss varnish. I have a very shallow aluminium tray, maybe 3mm deep at the most. Water plus a drop of washing up liquid and a couple of cocktail sticks, magnifying glasses, a wing, and a prayer, and you can usually manipulate even the small transfers. Then matt varnish, weathering, etc. Regards, Stephen.

    • @Elvenhome
      @Elvenhome  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Stephen. Yes, I had forgotten to put gloss varnish on first. I only remembered as I was filming. I also had a problem that the Fox transfers were on a very light paper and I couldn't read what the small transfers were. I've just bought some new ones and they are on a much darker card. The tweezer method really made a difference so I think I will be bolder in future. Stephen

      @Elvenhome  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Steve. I saw the price of each of the wagons and it was as if I went back in time to when I first started building the layout. It's reasonably easy to replace the wheels you just have to be sufficiently bold to prize the wagon under frame from the point of the wheel. It was about time Two to Watch made a return I just hope it helps both channels. I like using the 'sausage method' to ry to get a bit of randomness as the underbrush separates as it settles in the glue. The danger otherwise is that everything is very placed. Stephen

    Hello Stephen, thanks for reminding us all about Robbies Rolling Stock. I bought a set of Industrial Weedkilling Services tanks from him many years ago and they're very good. I see that he does a couple of tatty ex-private-owner wagons, which I think an imperative for modellers of the early British Railways era, but you rarely see modelled. Out of interest, which wheelsets did you use to replace those on your old Farish wagons? Also, how are you getting on with your J50? I'm finding mine to be... hmm... less than smooth on DC; hopefully chipping them will bring some improvement. Best wishes, -Ed
